4Since Shivi is a Maharashtrian, Ayushmann got the language and diction right by interacting with his staff in Marathi.

5The term Hawai Jahaz was coined by Shivkar Talpade, on whom the character is inspired from.

6The soundtrack is a collaboration of talents like Wadani Brothers, Rekha Bhardwaj, Sukhwinder and also Ayushmann.

PLOT SUMMARY

The story of Hawaizaada begins in the 1890s India under the British Rule. After repeating the same class eight times, Shivi (Ayushmann Khurrana) is expelled from school. He's enjoying his newly attained freedom when he bumps into the sensuality personified Sitara (Pallavi Sharda), the local diva, and Cupid strikes.

Meanwhile, fed up of his rebellious and carefree ways, Shivi's father shows him the door. The reality of his ouster also hits Sitara hard. Afraid of the thought that she'll be accused of bringing shame and disgrace to Shivi, she decides to leave the city. Distraught and dejected, Shivi slips into a life of sin and debauchery, till Shastry enters his life. An eccentric yet genius scientist and Vedic scholar, Shastry inspires Shivi to take control of himself and shares with him his dream of doing the impossible -- of making the world's first aircraft, an interpretation of freedom.

Will Shivi ever be able to live up to his guru's dream forms the crux of this story about a failed lover, a diva, an old man's dream and an impossible machine.

Spoiler ahead: Do not read this until you have seen the film

Shastry dies mid-way and his unfinished dream of making the airplane stays. The British try their best to thwart Shivi plans too. However, Shivi who is truly repentant that he was in a way responsible for killing Shastry by stealing a book that had his `secret recipe' to make an object fly; completes his mentor's dream. He makes the airplane and takes his true love Sitara on the first ride. So in a sense it is an Indian who actually flew the first ever plane. Yes though history has it that in 1903, the Wright Brothers flew a plane in North Carolina, eight years prior to this, in the pre-Independence period, an Indian had actually made history.

Jayanthi Natarajan sat on 350 files that had clearances

NEW DELHI: Issue of green clearance was indeed a major irritant during Jayanthi Natarajan's tenure (2011-13) as environment minister, not only for private industries but also for public projects and defence infrastructure.

No one would have probably complained had it been for adhering to green laws and procedures. If one looks at the 350-odd files Natarajan and her office sat over at the time of her resignation in December, 2013, it may be clear that the files mainly related to those projects which had approval of expert appraisal committees.

And by the time the Congress leadership realized implications of keeping projects pending, it was too late. Still, her successor M Veerappa Moily could manage to clear projects worth over Rs 1.5 lakh crore before the model code of conduct for 2014 general elections came into force in early March.

The key approvals given by him included one on the South Korean steel giant Posco's Rs 52,000 crore steel plant in Odisha. It ended eight years of wait for a project that would involve the largest ever foreign direct investment in India.

The government had then got it done by putting a condition for clearance on Posco where the company would have to spend on "social commitments" and delink the plant from its port project. It raised the project cost but the company readily agreed for it.

Govt to review projects flagged by Jayanthi Natarajan

Jayanthi Natarajan was sacked because of corruption charges: Congress

"If the government had got it done in January, 2014 by making certain rooms for it through conditions, it could have easily done it before. It shows the project got stuck because the government of the day might have opted for it," said an official who was involved in the process.

Posco was not the lone example. Moily quickly approved many projects within the first 30 days of taking additional charge of the ministry in December, 2013.

Many big-ticket projects worth over Rs 10 lakh crore had got stuck due to non-clearance on one pretext or the other during Natarajan's tenure. She had, in fact, inherited many of the pending files from her predecessor Jairam Ramesh.

The pendency during the period showed how the 'environmental clearance' issue (green tape) during the UPA regime had become a tool to stall projects by virtually replacing the 'Licence Permit Raj' (red tape regime) of the pre-1990s era.

Vedanta project of bauxite mining in Niyamgiri hills in Odisha also showed how it was stalled under Jairam Ramesh's tenure to fulfill the promise of Rahul Gandhi to the local tribals. The permission was, however, formally denied during Natarajan's tenure under the Supreme Court's order which was later flagged by Gandhi as a trophy in political rallies in the state.

Moily tried to undone many things which were done during Natarajan's and Ramesh's tenures. Obviously, he had a mandate for it from the top, signaling a major shift in the Congress Party's stand from pro-environment to pro-industries barely three months before the 2014 parliamentary election.

Surprisingly, the list of stalled projects also included defence projects that were crucial from the security point of view. The ministry under the NDA government cleared all those projects that had already got nod from the expert committees under the UPA regime but remained stuck.

The new government has also taken a number of measures to streamline the green clearance process. Launch of online system for both environment and forest clearances under the NDA government not only brings transparency but also speeds up clearance process within the existing law.

Delhi elections 2015: If I lose election, will go back to speaking engagements at Oxford and Harvard, Kiran Bedi tells TOI

Amid hectic campaigning for the Delhi assembly elections, BJP's chief ministerial candidate, Kiran Bedi, tells Sagarika Ghose that she is a team builder who takes responsibility and that her good work will make news now. And, if she loses the election, she will go back to speaking engagements at Oxford and Harvard.

Q: How does it feel to be on your first campaign trail?

A: It's a whole new life but for a very high cause. Its my dream my vision now to connect Delhi with the government of India so it doesn't get left behind. It will be disastrous if Delhi goes back to dharnas and agitations.

Q: Has it been a challenge to make the transition from activist to politician?

It was tough choice. I was a manager and master of my time. Now am not. Its others time which I have to work with. Now I make plans according to what my constituency needs or for road shows. Sometimes its planned by the office. Am not a master of my time at the moment. But I will be a master of my time once the campaign is over.

Delhi assembly elections 2015: Complete coverage

Q: You've been critical of politicians, now you are a politician?

A: Am still not a politician. Am still learning to be a politician, am not a full politician. Am in political administration through political route. Earlier I was in public administration through the route of the IPS, now am in politics through the national political party called BJP.

Q: So you're not a full time politician?

A: I didn't say that.

Q: The AAP says this is a battle between Imaandar (them) vs afsarvaad (you)

A: That's the charge they make against all. They don't leave out anybody. What is larger meaning of honesty? Honesty is in word and deed, honesty is not just financial.

BJP's chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi with her supporters during an election campaign in east Delhi.

Q: Your ex colleague former top cop Julio Rebeiro has written an article saying you like to be the sole boss. You are not a team player?

A: Nothing in my life has been achieved by being a sole boss. Police reform was achieved by me only? It was on 3 C model: collective corrective community based. I have not done anything in isolation. Am a team builder. I empower people and align people but I take responsibility.

Q: Rebeiro says you like being the centre of attention?

A: Am in the centre of accountability if accountability brings attention so be it. When am a leader leader should give the vision, knows the way shows the way and goes the way.

Q: Your vision for Delhi?

A: Delhi has to be clean. We've never focused on swachta. If we could bring a Shramdaan concept, everyone in it together we could start the process of reversal as it has already

Q: Tell us a bit about your 6 Ps concept...

A: Women's security has to have a holistic approach. Begin with families: parents. How is a women respected at home, how to the Principles teach, how do the pradhans lead. So parents, principles and pradhans that's one P, for People. Then Politicians what does he say or do, then comes Police are they doing community policing. I am a master of community policing. At the time I was doing there was no TV coverage, so next generation doesn't know. Next, fast track Prosecution, fifth Prison reform, last media, or Press. I've said if I win a monthly dil ki baat will be done by the CM with citizens of the city with me saying what has been done on various issues, here's the lekha jokha on womens security, here's the new policy.

Q: If you had to give one message on how to deal with gender discrimination?

A: By being equal, competent, self reliant. Self reliance is our thing. My sports background plays a vital role here.

READ ALSO: Kejriwal says he will mark one year of resignation with swearing-in

Q: Aren't you only popular among the middle class? What's your vision for Delhi's slum colonies?

A: My work in slums for 26 years is unparalled by a public servant. I've worked in the slums of Bawana, Yamuna pushta jhuggis, in unauthorised colonies in Kalaram Majri, in 70 villages in Haryana, we empowered women, educated 1000s of children, but it does not make news. But now it will make news. Now it will! Now my good work will make news

Q: But how will you counter AAP's offer of free water and electricity?

A: You give everything free, you will have empty coffers. Anything given free has no value. Given at reasonable affordable price lends value to everything you give. For instance, in my school for the poorest, we don't keep it free. We charge five rupees fee and so parents send their children. When its free they don't come. Never make a precious product which is for larger consumption free, keep it at an reasonably affordable price but to have it at an affordable price you have to have it in abundance, so demand matches supply whether its water or electricity. That's why Delhi must connect with the central government because the central government will give money, power water. Kejriwal's promises of borrow and spend will run Delhi into bankruptcy.

BJP president Amit Shah and party's Delhi chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi.

Q: And your vision for infrastructure?

A: Last mile connectivity is what I want. I have already met Nitin Gadkari and Venkaiah Naidu. Last mile connectivity was my dream in Asian Games 1982. I told the government at that time, give me ring railway buses and give me one pass.

Q: Is statehood the answer for Delhi?

A: I would like to look at that. Its part of the BJP manifesto. But its not an obstacle. CM and LG should work together. CM has a large civil defence force. Its scattered, frittered, not utilised. So while I have to work with the police, I also have to recover my own force, the civil defence and the home guards. They are for disaster management, they are also for social defence.

Q: As a woman are you facing problems in politics and are you encountering resistance in the Delhi BJP?

A: No. For me it's a progression from my activism. I don't see resistance. I see great support. I read things in newspaper for which there's no basis, is amazing how stories are created. They said I and another person have a difference of opinion, but we have not met for 7 days.

Q: So you have no issues with the party?

A: The party is solidly behind me. All want Delhi to connect with the government of India. Otherwise Delhi will suffer dharnas agitations negative headlines again.

Q: How did you react to US President Barack Obama's views that India divided on religious lines can't progress? Many have seen it as a criticism of the BJP.

A: I'm a total humanist. I went to a convent school and college. One side of my family is from a mixed Sikh background, the other half is Hindu. In my neighbourhood I had many Muslim friends. When I wrote the IPS, for me my religion was humanity. I practise humanity.

Q: But what about those in BJP who support love jihad ghar wapsi?

A: Those are hopeless useless words. Nothing is banned. You can go wapas a hundred times. Today I can decide to be a Christian, tomorrow a Muslim, third day I can be a Hindu or a Sikh or a Buddhist or an atheist. Its my choice. Freedom of religion is my choice.

Q: But some people in your party believe strongly in ghar wapsi.

A: What you say is hopelessly wrong. Ghar wapsi or not wapsi or dubaraa wapsi is your freedom of religion as long as it is not compelled and there is no complaint. If I want to change my religion, its my right, and if somebody is facilitating it, that's within the law.

Q: How is your relationship with Anna? He doesn't speak to you or Arvind.

A: Anna Hazare doesn't believe in the political party system or in political parties. I disagree with him. I don't think you can elect only independents. My relationship with him remains inspite of our disagreement.

Q: What if you lose the election?

A: I've a lot of speaking engagements on hold from Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge or Columbia. All are on hold. So while remaining a member of the BJP I will go back to my speaking engagements and go back with my trust to Nav Jyoti and India Vision Foundation which are my children which I had to resign from.

Tearful but proud daughter salutes braveheart Col MN Rai

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 30 Januari 2015 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: Emotions ran high as Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, killed by militants on Tuesday in Kashmir, was laid to rest at the Brar Square cemetery in Delhi Cantonment on Thursday.

Rai's 11-year-old daughter choked up as she shouted her father's regiment's old battle cry, then raised her right hand to salute him for the last time as she burst out in tears. Colonel Rai's wife was inconsolable, while his six-year-old son couldn't probably comprehend the loss.

Pay tribute to Colonel M N Rai, martyred in J&K

Alka, Rai's eldest daughter whose war cry led to the Gorkha officers and soldiers repeating it several times over, said she was a proud daughter. "My father was a brave father," Alka said.

The 39-year-old colonel of the 2/9 Gurkha Rifles was killed by militants on Tuesday in Tral, a day after he was honoured for his bravery with a Yudh Seva Medal on Republic Day. He was commanding 42 Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Kashmir Valley.

Col Rai is survived by his wife Priyanka, and three children.

Col Rai's funeral pyre was lit by his elder brother, Col D N Rai, who too is an officer of the Gurkha Rifles. A second brother, Y N Rai, is with the CRPF, and was among those who sustained injuries when they fought militants during the terrorist attack on Raghunath Temple in 2002.

Army chief General Dalbir Singh, a fellow Gurkha officer, was among those who paid tributes to Col Rai at Brar Square.

Many eyebrows were raised by the absence of any senior member of the Modi government.

A brigadier posted in the Kashmir Valley told TOI that Col Rai was known for leading his men from the front. "After the militants were surrounded by Rai's troops, family of one of them came out of the house to tell Rai that they would surrender. But that was not to be," he said, about what led to the colonel's killing. A Jammu and Kashmir police head constable, Sanjeev Singh, too lost his life in the gun battle.

Y N Rai said probably only a man in uniform would understand how proud he was of his martyred brother. "I am very proud of my brother," he said, talking about the phone calls pouring in from all over the world mourning his brother's death.

Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi wrote to Priyanka Rai, saying, "I know what it is to lose a beloved husband to a terrorist attack, and for children to be robbed of the love and guidance of their father at a young age. You must draw strength from the fact that your husband died fighting terrorism and defending his country till his last breath, and that his supreme sacrifice and martyrdom will always be honoured."

Full text of Jayanthi Natarajan's explosive letter to Sonia Gandhi

Find below the complete text of the explosive letter written by former UPA minister Jayanthi Natarajan. We have spoken to her and she has verified that the letter we are carrying below is authentic. Although the letter is dated November 5, 2014, it has come out in the public domain only now.

Hon'ble Smt. Sonia Gandhi, President, Indian National Congress

November 5, 2014

Madam, I write to you with a very heavy heart. Over the last 11 months, I have suffered the most excruciating mental agony, and have been continuously attacked, wrongly vilified and defamed in the media, and exposed to every possible humiliation in public life. As I write today, more than 30 years of my loyal, faithful, and dedicated service to our party stand destroyed and in shambles around me. My entire career is ruined, and above all, the sacred and venerable legacy of my family, which served our nation and party with immense distinction, and patriotism stands in danger of being tarnished. As you are aware, I am a fourth generation Congress worker.

Three generations before me, fought for the independence of our country from the British, and spent many long years in jail, along with other stalwarts of the freedom movement. After independence, my family served the country and the Congress party with great dedication, and my grandfather who was the last Congress Chief Minister of the State, my aunt who was a selfless social worker, have etched the name of my family in the annals of our history as patriots and nationalists.

I myself have served the Congress party from 1984, have been a four time MP, and a former Minister of State, without a single blemish on my reputation, in terms of integrity in public life, and my loyalty to my party and my country. Thirty years later, for no fault of mine, I find that my own small work, and the glorious legacy of my family stand ruined. I am still unable to understand what I have done wrong, or what crime I have committed to have been treated like this in the party I have faithfully served so long. I want to categorically state that I have always been a loyal, sincere dedicated party worker, implicitly obeying the orders of my leaders. I have always carried out any task assigned to me with sincerity and dedication, and have never been guilty of any wrongdoing of any kind, in my public and personal life.

In these circumstances, the disaster which happened to me on the December 20, 2013, was a thunderbolt, which hit me from the blue and destroyed my life. Until now, I have been unable to understand what was wrongdoing was committed by me to suddenly receive what was virtually a sentence of death.

I want to place on record, that from December 20, 2013, until now, I have still not been told by you, why I was asked to resign from the Council of Ministers, nor have I ever been asked or given an opportunity to explain, if indeed I had committed any wrongdoing. On the other hand, the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh wrote a letter to me, accepting my resignation, in which he praised the excellent work I had done as Minister, and what he termed my valuable contribution as Minister.

In these circumstances, it was clearly not the Prime Minister nor my work in Government, which led to my ouster as Minister. Thus it still baffles me, why I was humiliated so brutally.

To recall the sequence of events, I would like to record, that I was carrying out my duties as Minister of State (I/C) Environment and Forests in the routine course, when suddenly that day on December 20, 2013, the then PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh summoned me to his office. When I entered he stood up from his chair, looking tense and grim, and uttered these exact words. He said "Jayanthi, I have been told by Congress President, that your services are required for party work." I was puzzled, and I said, "Yes Sir. So what should I do?" He replied, "She wants you to resign." I was shocked and said, "Resign Sir? But when?" He replied "Today." I once again asked him if this was what the Congress president wished. He answered in the affirmative. Unsuspecting, and trusting you totally, I did not utter a single word, but smiled at him and said I would comply with the wishes of the Congress President.

I was so guile free, that I honestly believed that you wanted me to work for the party, and that it was an honour to be so chosen. I did not for a second at that time, imagine the consequences of resigning just 100 days before the elections were due, and what would lie in store for me in the future. I trusted you with my life, and even more importantly, with my reputation, my career and the legacy of my family.

Thereafter, I asked for time to meet you. However, I was told that I could talk to you on the telephone. During our conversation I repeated what the Prime Minister told me, and you reiterated that I should resign and do Party work. Within half an hour of meeting the then Prime Minister, I sent in my letter of resignation, stating that I would like to resign from the office of Minister, due to my desire to devote myself to party work, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. As mentioned earlier, Dr. Singh immediately accepted my resignation, and in that letter profusely lauded my contribution to the government.

The next day my resignation was headlines in the media, and all the initial reports correctly reported that I had stepped down for party work. By the afternoon, to my shock, I received information that persons from the office of Shri Rahul Gandhi were calling the media and planting stories that my resignation was NOT for party work.

My sources were impeccable, and I felt unease. Thereafter, the media was flooded with negative stories about me. The same day, namely, the day after I resigned, Shri Rahul Gandhi addressed a FICCI meeting of industrialists, where he made uncomplimentary references to delays in environmental clearances, and the adverse effects upon the economy, and assured the corporate world, that the party and government would henceforth ensure that there would be no delays, and bottlenecks for industry. After being alerted by the media, I saw the entire speech on YouTube. It was then that some in the media questioned me if I had been asked to resign immediately, to enable Shri Rahul Gandhi to address FICCI and the corporate world with the news of my resignation in the background.

An assurance was sought to be given to the corporate world that they need no longer worry about environmental clearance delays and that bottlenecks would be removed, although throughout my very brief tenure, I strictly followed the laws and rules and tried to protect the environment, in keeping with the legacy of Smt. Indira Gandhi and Shri Rajiv Gandhi, who first brought in the Environment Protection Act. Since I had only followed this line of our party, I could not understand why I had been asked to resign within half an hour on the previous day, especially since I had never been told of any issues prior to December 20, 2013. Some analysts speculated that I might be projected as the focal point for the perceived failure of the economy at that time.

What followed was a hysterical vicious false and motivated campaign against me, in the media, orchestrated entirely by particular chosen individuals in the party. There was not a single word of truth in what was said, nor was there a single concrete fact.

I was never a bottleneck, nor was I ever responsible for unwarranted delays in major projects, and I can prove this at any time. I was shattered by the attack upon me, and bewildered. I wrote a passionate message to Shri Rahul Gandhi, about my removal as Minister, and his speech, at FICCI, and asked him what wrongdoing I had committed to warrant this treatment. I said, that I should have been asked for an explanation, IF I had done anything wrong, as even a murderer has his say in court, and here I don't even know what, if any wrong doing was committed by me. I told him that my family legacy and my name would be forever ruined, and all I had done was my duty. I asked him to tell me, what wrong I had committed. I asked for time to meet him. He replied that he was "running a little busy" at that time, but that he would meet me a little later.

Despite several requests, that day never came. Not till this minute. I took a break of 10 days, and went to my sister's home to recover.

When I returned, in the first week of January 2014, I was given an appointment to meet you. During our meeting, I explained my agony to you, over the attack which had been unleashed upon me and asked what I had done wrong. You replied that the elections were coming up and I was required for party work. I told you that the media was keen I should speak to them in view of the huge speculation over my resignation, but you specifically told me not to meet the media. From that day until now, I have honoured that word. But from that day until now, I have neither been given party work, nor have I been given an opportunity to meet you, despite several requests.

In fact, later in January, I was again shocked and distressed to receive a telephone call from Ajay Maken, Head of Congress Media cell. He informed me, that my name was being removed from the list of party spokespersons, that the decision was taken "at the highest level" and other work would be assigned to me. I have served as party spokesperson for over 10 long years during very difficult times. I have defended the party day and night, 24 hours a day despite huge domestic problems, including my mother suffering from a brain tumour, and ultimately dying after suffering for 3 long years, during which I not only served as her principal caregiver, but also constantly travelled to Delhi to serve as party spokesperson, without even being a MP.

My sacrifices, more importantly the sacrifices made by my family, my parents, and husband, were all for the cause of the Congress party. I was given an opportunity to serve as Minister for just over two years, but served the party day and night, for the last 30 odd years. Throughout, there has never been a blemish upon my reputation.

In fact apart from hundreds of others, Dr. Manmohan Singh and you have several times praised me for my work as spokesperson for the party. I only mentioned this to point out my track record was perfect, and in ten long years I have not made even one mistake as spokesperson. It was therefore clearly a deliberate decision to remove me from the list of spokespersons, and for reasons which are still unknown to me.

I also feel that I have been pressurised and used to lead issues which I considered wrong. An instance: While I was still a Minister, an important matter which has caused me great agitation is the fact that I was called upon to attack the present Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on what is referred to in the media as 'Snoopgate.'

Despite the fact that I initially refused, because I thought that the party should attack Shri Modi on policy and governance and not drag an unknown woman into a controversy, Shri Ajay Maken telephoned me on November 16, 2013, while I was on tour and asked me to come to Delhi immediately to address a press conference on the issue. I expressed my disinclination to do this, and refused the assignment, mentioning that I was a Minister at that time, and this should not be taken as the point of view of Government. I suggested perhaps an Official Spokesperson should do the Press Conference, if so desired. Shri Maken told me once again, that this was a decision taken at "the highest level" and that I had no choice in the matter. After the press conference throughout the controversy which followed I was told by Shri Maken to fiercely attack Shri Modi, on TV channels and during debates, although I was otherwise never fielded in the media after appointment as Minister.

During my tenure as Minister, it was the clear and specific policy of the party, to take all steps to protect the environment, and carry forward the legacy of Smt. Indira Gandhi and Shri Rajiv Gandhi, to preserve the environment, and keep a balance between environment and industry. As Chairperson NAC, you have written several letters to me regarding projects in the Environment Ministry, and protection of tribal rights, and I have always kept you briefed that due care was being taken by me to protect the environment. I received specific requests [which used to be directives for us] from Shri Rahul Gandhi and his office forwarding environmental concerns in some important areas and I took care to honour those "requests." Shri Rahul Gandhi went in person to Niyamgiri Hills in Odisha, and publicly declared to the Dongria Kondh tribals that he would be their "sipahi" and would not allow their interests to suffer at the hands of mining giant Vedanta. His views in the matter were conveyed to me by his office, and I took great care to ensure that the interests of the tribals were protected and rejected environmental clearance to Vendanta despite tremendous pressure from my colleagues in cabinet, and huge criticism from industry for what was described as "stalling" a Rs. 30,000 crore investment from Vedanta.

Fortunately, my decision was upheld by the Supreme Court. The same happened in the case of the Adani projects, where I faced tremendous criticism from within the cabinet and outside, for stalling investment at a time when the country was going through a difficult time in terms of the economy. The complaints of the local fisherfolk and NGOs of environmental violations in the Adani case were forwarded to me by Shri Rahul Gandhi's office, and I was told to liaise with Shri Dipak Babaria in the matter. Occasionally, I apprised Shri Rahul Gandhi of steps I had taken, and he responded positively. In fact you have yourself conveyed your concern in this regard in letters written to me. In several cases including the stalled GVK power project regarding the Dhari Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh, the Lavasa project in Maharashtra, the Nirma cement plant in Gujarat and in several other cases I was given specific input, to make my decision. Apart from this Shri Pulok Chatterji, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister was in constant touch with me, and officers of the Ministry in guiding the decisions to be taken by the Ministry at that time.

So in my decision making I have factored in the party line despite all criticisms against me and therefore several decisions of mine were expressly overruled by the Prime Minister.

My object in pointing out the above to you is to bring to your notice that, in several cases the party high command had very strong views regarding environmental violations. This was the reason that I repeatedly challenged my colleagues in cabinet, thus bringing down upon my own head the anger and wrath of the entire cabinet, and also the entire corporate world. Still, I soldiered on doing my duty. This is the reason why I am so stunned and shocked that in the end, I was removed as Minister just 100 days before elections although I had committed no wrong doing, and none was pointed out to me, in fact the then Prime Minister praised my work, while accepting my resignation. Thereafter, although I repeatedly sought clarification, as to what wrong doing I was guilty of to have been so brutally humiliated, and further humiliated by being removed as Spokesperson, no answer was given to me. Despite my repeated attempts to meet Shri Rahul Gandhi and you, no appointment was given to me. Dr. Manmohan Singh, and you, both assured me at the time of making me resign that my services were required for party work. No other explanation has been given to me till date.

After my removal as Minister, there was widespread news coverage in the Kerala media that my removal was because I had notified the order on protection of the Western Ghats, the Kasturirangan Committee report, on December 19, 2013, (just one day before my removal) which had been bitterly opposed some sections of society in Kerala, who felt that this order would adversely affect their economic interests, and had expressed their opposition to the Prime Minister and to you. Nevertheless, in the interest of protecting the environment, and pursuant to orders of court, I took that important decision.

My successor Shri Moily, put my orders on hold. A few days before I was removed as Minister, I needed to review the Adani file for some legal issues. When I sent for the file, I was told that it was "missing." After considerable search, my officials "found" it, apparently in the washroom of the computer section, the very day on which I had been asking to resign. Clearly some officials in my then Ministry did not want to send that file back to me, for unknown reasons.

Surely you were aware that removing a Minister just one hundred days before Lok Sabha elections without any wrongdoing being even alleged against her, and on the contrary, the Prime Minister lauding my work in writing, would have devastating effects upon me, my career, everything I have worked for over 30 years, and above all the patriotic legacy of my family?

Yet this was done to me. I am a mere cog in the wheel, a helpless loyal Congress worker. Just as could be predicted, my reputation, my career and my life now lie in shreds around me. And I have committed no wrong.

Significantly, if indeed I had been guilty of wrongdoing, I would have been happy to have been given a chance to defend myself, and I would have emerged pure and transparent and victorious.

This opportunity was not given to me, I was simply told I was required for party work, but not used for it also making me feel that that was a euphemism to get me to resign.

Over the last 11 months I have undergone untold mental and physical agony, as a result of this incident. I have major health issues due to my tension and humiliation over the treatment meted out to me, and my future looks bleak. More importantly, I need to save the legacy of my family or children and my future generations will not forgive me.

You may wonder why I write to you now, which I have decided to do after 4 months of prayer and contemplation. I wish to record that I tried several times to meet Shri Rahul Gandhi and you, but was not given an appointment. During our last meeting, and only meeting after my resignation, you instructed me to avoid the media. Until today I have followed your instructions. Just two days ago, Shri Vasan left the Congress and formed his own party. It was only on the day before Shri Vasan left, that I received my first ever communication from AICC in the form of a telephone call from Shri Motilal Vora, who wanted to know what my stand was regarding Shri Vasan, and what my future course of action would be.

Until Shri Vasan left, nobody even spoke to me. This was the reason that people began to speculate that I had become a scapegoat for the economic problems of the UPA government. However, whatever is said now, the damage to my reputation has been complete and devastating. And future generations of my family will not forgive me if I do not set the record straight. I have therefore chosen this time to write to you. I am doing it after four months of prayers and contemplation and coming to the conclusion that I need to write to you the truth which you know as much as I do.

While there is considerable churning going on in the party now, my own problems however are far deeper, and are both in relation to the party in general, and how I have been treated.

Madam, most respectfully, I request you to kindly let me know at least now, what wrongdoing I am alleged to have committed to be subject to such repeated humiliation. If indeed I am alleged to have done anything wrong, I do not understand the reason why this was not placed before me, and why I was not given an opportunity to defend myself for 11 long months. I am sure you will understand how important it is for me to protect my reputation and that of my family. Without a single word being said I have been humiliated for 11 months. I would be grateful if you would be so gracious as to at least understand my anguish.

Congress will be stronger if two more people quit Congress along with Jayanthi, TNCC chief says

CHENNAI: Unfazed by the resignation of former Union minister Jayanthi Natarajan from the party, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief E V K S Elangovan on Friday said the Congress would be stronger if another person and his family also quit the party (referring to P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram) so that it will get cleansed.

In a strong statement, Elangovan said, "Since you have resigned, the party will be cleansed and along with you if another person and his family (referring to P Chidambaram and son Karti Chidambaram) quit the party, it will help the party get stronger."

He said after being a minister for 10 years in the UPA government, the person (Chidambaram) ducked from contesting the Lok Sabha elections in 2014. Cadres were so upset and this could not be explained in words, said Elangovan.

Reacting to Jayanthi's remarks about her family's contribution to the Congress, Elangovan recalled her grandfather M Bhaktavatsalam's rule in the state.

"As chief minister Bhaktavatsalam was responsible for the killing of several anti-Hindi agitators and also for not distributing rice in the PDS at the right time, the golden rule of Kamaraj came to an end in 1967 three years after Bakstavatsalam assumed charge," said Elangovan.

In a sarcastic comment, Elangovan said for 27 years, Jayanthi had continued as Rajya Sabha member and it is a Guinness record.

ISIS threatens to behead Obama and 'transform America into Muslim province'

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 Januari 2015 | 22.14

An ISIS fighter has threatened to behead Barack Obama "in the White House and transform America into a Muslim province" before murdering a Kurdish soldier in a gruesome propaganda video.

The footage, entitled "Bombardment of Peaceful Muslims in the City of Mosul" showed damage from shelling allegedly carried out by Peshmerga forces in the Iraqi city earlier this month before killing the captive in retaliation.

The masked ISIS fighter threatened attacks on the US, France, Belgium and the Kurds, claiming that the group's followers will kill the American and Kurdish presidents as well as detonating car bombs and explosives in European countries that are part of the international coalition fighting against it.

He claims Peshmerga forces "shells the peaceful Muslims of Mosul with American Crusader bombs, and has poisoned dozens of them with asphyxiating gases" as images are shown of damaged buildings, bodies and injured children.

Then the jihadist issues "a message to the entire world" in Kurdish, translated by the Memri Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor.

"This is the fate of anyone who opposes Islam. Know, oh Obama, that we will reach America. Know also that we will cut off your head in the White House and transform America into a Muslim province," he says.

US President Barack Obama

"And this is my message to France and its sister, Belgium. We advise you that we will come to you with car bombs and explosive charges and we will cut off your heads."

The fighter then beheads the captive with a knife to cheers from the gathered crowd, threatening to send Kurdish president Masoud Barzani a soldier's head for every missile the Peshmerga launch.

ISIS, which has overrun swathes of Iraq and Syria, has made a number of similar statements since a US-led coalition mounted air strikes against its fighters last year and frequently uses beheading videos as a platform for its propaganda.

As well as the filmed murders of foreign hostages James Foley, David Haines, Alan Henning and most recently, Japanese aid worker Haruna Yukawa, public beheadings have become commonplace in its territories where death is the penalty for numerous unproved "crimes".

According to the Middle East Media Research Institute (Memri), the video threatening Obama was released by ISIS on Monday, two days after heavy Peshmerga shelling and coalition air strikes were reported in its stronghold of Mosul.

It is the largest city controlled by Isis and one of its longest-standing strongholds in Iraq.

On Saturday, news agencies reported an increase in US air strikes around Mosul aiming to disrupt Isis supply routes ahead of an expected operation later this year to re-take it from militants.

Coalition airstrikes hit at least two dozen locations around Mosul, destroying dozens of vehicles, buildings, fighting positions and insurgent units, military officials said.

The US has claimed that the coalition has "halted the momentum" of ISIS, which made most of its gains largely unchallenged last year.

No foreign armies have yet sent group troops to fight Islamists in the region as fears increase of more Isis-inspired terror attacks following the Charlie Hebdo massacre, Ottawa shootings, Sydney siege and numerous failed plots in the UK, Belgium and across Europe.

India asks Japan if it’s interested in Rs 50,000 crore submarine project

NEW DELHI: Russia, France, Germany and Spain, all better watch out. They may have to contend with Japan in the race to supply submarines to India. In keeping with their expanding strategic partnership, the Modi government has asked the Shinzo Abe administration whether it would be interested in the over Rs 50,000 crore project to build six stealth submarines in India.

With Japan recently ending its decades old self-imposed arms export embargo, New Delhi has forwarded "a proposal" to Tokyo to "consider the possibility" of making its latest diesel-electric Soryu-class submarines in India, say sources.

This "feeler" dovetails into PM Narendra Modi's strategic outreach to Japan, as well as Australia and the US, since he took over last year. The possible sale of Japanese US-2i ShinMayva amphibious aircraft to the Indian Navy is already being discussed. Australia, too, is considering the Soryu submarines to replace its ageing Collins-class vessels.

READ ALSO: Rattled by Chinese submarines, India starts rebuilding fleet

The US, on its part, has been pushing for greater defence cooperation among India, Japan and Australia to counter China's assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region. The recent Obama-Modi summit led to the "joint strategic vision for Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region" with a direct reference to South China Sea, where China is locked in territorial disputes with its neighbours. Both Japan and Australia are also keen to participate in the annual Indo-US Malabar naval exercise on a regular basis, which has riled China in the past.

But the 4,200-tonne Soryu submarines, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, may not meet Indian requirements. Japan will also be just one of the contenders for the mega programme, called Project-75-India, if it agrees to throw its hat into the ring.

Countries like France (ship-builder DCNS), Germany (HDW), Russia (Rosoboronexport) and Spain (Navantia) are already girding up, with the first three having the experience of building submarines for India.

The six new submarines, with both land-attack missile capabilities and air-independent propulsion for greater underwater endurance, are to be built at an Indian shipyard with foreign collaboration. "If Japan is really interested, it will have to form a joint venture with an Indian public/private shipyard," said the source.

The Modi government wants to kick-start Project-75-I, which has not taken off due to politico-bureaucratic apathy since being accorded "acceptance of necessity" in November 2007, in the backdrop of India's rapidly depleting conventional submarine fleet.

A high-level committee, led by Vice Admiral AV Subhedar, is slated to submit a report to the defence ministry next month on the domestic shipyards which are capable of submarine-manufacturing. "The tender or RFP (request for proposal) to the shipyards should be issued this year," he said.

The Soryu submarines, incidentally, were inducted into the Japanese maritime self-defence force from 2009 onwards. Already equipped with AIP, Japan is now working to install lithium-ion battery propulsion systems in its next-generation of the Soryu submarines.

Modi tightens grip over foreign policy; BJP, Cong lock horns over Sujatha sacking

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday fired India's highest-ranking diplomat and replaced her with India's ambassador to the United States, a day after a successful visit by US President Barack Obama.

Modi's appointment of Subrahmanyam Jaishankar as foreign secretary, the top bureaucrat at the foreign ministry, underscores the Prime Minister's control over foreign affairs.

But his abrupt sacking of Sujatha Singh, the foreign secretary appointed by the previous Congress administration, was criticized by the Congress party.

READ ALSO: Manmohan wanted Jaishankar as foreign secretary, but Sonia chose Sujatha

Congress questioned the timing of government's decision to remove Sujatha Singh and wondered whether it was "retribution" for her stand on IFS officer Devyani Khobragade.

"Is sacking of foreign secretary late retribution for her stand on Devyani Khobragade affair? Removal after a presidential visit "coincidental"? former information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari wrote on Twitter.

Government late on Wednesday night decided to replace Sujatha Singh, curtailing her tenure by eight months.

Singh was the foreign secretary when the arrest of Khobragade in the US had led to a diplomatic dust-up.

The 1999 batch IFS officer was arrested in 2013 in New York on visa fraud charges. The incident had triggered a row between the two countries with India reacting with steps including downgrading privileges of certain categories of US diplomats. Singh as foreign secretary had taken a tough stand on the matter.

'No political motive' behind FS' removal: BJP

Defending the move to replace Sujatha Singh, BJP ruled out any political motive and said the government had acted well within its right to decide on appointment of officers.

"I don't see any reason for hue and cry. A government is within its rights to decide how it would like to appoint what officers and with what responsibilities. And this is not the first time..... Preceding governments have taken (such) decisions," BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said.

"I do not see any reason that anyone can attribute any political motives. This is the right of the government," Kohli said.

Taking on the Congress for raising questions on the decision, the BJP leader said, "The Congress party spokesperson can try to do politics or anything. In any case it does not appear that they are inspired by their leadership. That's why their constant method seems to be trying to raise a hue and cry on issues also where there is no scope to do so."

Kohli said there can't be a political motive to everything.

"How can you mix it with the appointment of the foreign secretary? A government is within its rights to appoint any officer and this has been done by preceding governments too. There can't be a political motive to everything," he said.

Since he swept to power last year, Modi has virtually taken over the reins of foreign policy, beginning with an unprecedented invitation to regional leaders to attend his inauguration and followed by high profile meetings with the leaders of United States, China, Japan and Australia.

During Sujatha Singh's tenure under the previous administration, India and the United States were embroiled in a diplomatic row over the arrest of a junior Indian diplomat in New York for an alleged visa fraud. Ties hit their lowest level in a decade.

Since then, Modi has moved rapidly to rebuild ties with Washington, putting behind his own embarrassment at being denied a visa for a decade for religious violence in the state he governed earlier.

He went on a state visit last September, building a relationship with Obama and then hosting him as the guest of honour at this week's Republic Day Parade, the first US president to do so.

READ ALSO: Jaishankar worked on PM's idea of inviting Obama for R-Day

Jaishankar, credited with helping Modi turn around the relationship, said his job was to carry out the government's priorities.

"A big responsibility. I am honoured that I have been assigned this responsibility," he told reporters as he took charge.

Jaishankar has previously been ambassador to China and Singapore.

India wants to keep US chicken legs out

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 28 Januari 2015 | 22.14

TNN | Jan 28, 2015, 05.19AM IST

India had banned poultry imports several years ago, citing avian influenza, but the WTO accepted the US challenge and termed the restrictions imposed as "unscientific". India is not the only country to have imposed such checks.

NEW DELHI: India has challenged a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling, asking it to lift a ban on the import of poultry from the US, a move aimed at helping check shipment of low-cost chicken legs, which are discarded in America as they are perceived as having higher cholesterol levels.

Although a decision on filing an appeal had been taken by the commerce department earlier, the actual plea was delayed due to legal vetting and news about it trickled out only after US president Barack Obama left for Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

India had banned poultry imports several years ago, citing avian influenza, but the WTO accepted the US challenge and termed the restrictions imposed as "unscientific". India is not the only country to have imposed such checks. Even China had levied duties, and was asked to remove them by WTO as they were seen to be unfair.

Unlike India, where "tangri kebabs" are a hot favourite, in US, consumers prefer "white meat" and opt for chicken breast. As a result, there are surplus chicken legs and thighs for American companies to export to countries such as China, Mexico and Russia, where buyers are less fussy. In India, of course, everyone at the dinner table searches for leg piece in curry, which is often elusive.

As a result, not only there is a higher demand for leg pieces in India but even costs are lower if they are imported from the US. Government estimates suggest that despite 100% import duty, leg pieces from US will cost around Rs 100 a kg in the retail market. However, in cities such as Delhi, chicken produced at domestic market sells for at least Rs 160-170 a kg, while drumsticks and leg pieces cost close to Rs 250 a kg.

As demand for protein rises with increasing income levels, meat prices are expected to rise further and the domestic poultry industry is citing livelihood concerns to press the government for action. Although the government sees merit in challenging the WTO ruling, it is not averse to other steps to check import of chicken legs.

IBM likely to lay off 5,000 employees in India

BENGALURU: IBM is expected to lay off a few thousand people in India in the coming months as the company moves towards newer technologies such as cloud computing and mobile and as it seeks to deal with dropping revenues and growing margin pressures.

Multiple sources put the likely figure in India at about 5,000 employees, though they also said many of these could be replaced by contract staff. This will help margins, and facilitate just-in-time hiring in the current volatile market.

IBM did not respond to questions about this from TOI till late Tuesday evening.

On Monday, Forbes carried an article by Silicon Valley technology columnist Robert Cringely who said that IBM was planning a transformation project - code named Project Chrome -- that would reduce its global workforce by 26% or 1.12 lakh employees. IBM responded in an email to news agency Reuters that the company had "just taken a $600 million charge for workforce rebalancing" and this equated to job cuts of "several thousand employees, a small fraction of what's been reported (by Forbes)." Most analysts have also dismissed the possibility of a layoff on the scale reported by Cringely.

READ ALSO: After announcing layoffs affecting "several thousand people", IBM denies report

India accounts for about 1.3 lakh employees out of IBM's total workforce of over 4 lakh, and for that reason will likely to have to bear a significant burden of the layoffs. IBM spends over $150 million annually to hire contract IT staff. Contract hiring provides quick access to skilled technical resources and is a cost-effective alternative to supplement existing IT staff without incurring recruitment or training costs.

"There is a strong movement towards contract staffing based on future business dynamics. Companies want to hire project-based staff rather than have permanent employees on their rolls," said Ajit Isaac, chairman and MD of Ikya Global. Four big HR staffing firms -- Web Development Company (part of Manpower Group), Magna Infotech, Artech Infosystems and Collabera -- supply close to 7,000-8,000 people to IBM annually, said sources.

Over the past decade, IBM has hired frenetically in India, making it the company's largest operation, even as it has reduced its US headcount from 1. 33 lakh in 2005 to 83,000 last year. India is the company's core services delivery engine.

IBM's global revenues have dropped for eleven successive quarters. The $93-billion company is focusing on newer digital imperatives like cloud, mobility and analytics. "Previously there was higher tolerance towards mediocre skillsets. That's not something companies want to live with. They want employees to be flexible and take on lateral roles. Many companies hired aggressively in the past and now they are sitting on huge manpower that's not scalable or flexible," said Rituparna Chakraborty, co-founder of TeamLease.

Delhi elections 2015: Kiran Bedi sends legal notice to AAP chief Kejriwal

NEW DELHI: BJP's chief ministerial nominee Kiran Bedi on Tuesday sent a legal notice to AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for using her photograph in the party's poster campaign without her permission.

"Yes, she has sent a notice to Kejriwal. He has been asked to ensure that the posters are removed," Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) media convener Praveen Shankar Kapoor said.

The AAP has recently put up posters on numerous auto-rickshaws plying in the national capital, asking the people of Delhi to choose between Kejriwal and Bedi for the post of chief minister.

In the posters, the picture of Kejriwal has the word "imandar" (honest) printed below it while that of Bedi has "avsarvadi" (opportunist).

Earlier, fellow party leader Jagdish Mukhi, too, had sent a notice to Kejriwal for using his photograph in similar posters, before the BJP declared Bedi as their chief ministerial candidate.

The AAP pitted Kejriwal against Mukhi, even though the BJP had said that they would contest the Delhi election under Prime Minister Narendra Modi without naming a CM candidate -- the BJP, however, later named Bedi for the post after she joined the party earlier this month.

Republic Day parade: 10 key developments

Written By Unknown on Senin, 26 Januari 2015 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: President Barack Obama made history on Monday by becoming the first US president to be the chief guest at the Republic Day. Here are 10 latest developments as India celebrates its 66th Republic Day:

1. Modi, Obama cheered at Rajpath

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama were greeted with loud cheers as they arrived at Rajpath for the Republic Day parade on Monday.

Modi arrived at the saluting dais after paying homage to immortal soldiers at the India Gate and was received by defence minister Manohar Parrikar.

Modi then waved at the crowd and was greeted with loud cheers.

Obama arrived after him, with wife Michelle Obama, in his official car The Beast and was received by Modi.

As the two moved towards the glass enclosure erected for the VVIPs, Obama also waved at the crowd.

Special coverage: Republic Day parade

2. Barack Obama chews gum as parade marches on

In an ungainly sight, cameras caught US President Brack Obama chewing gum during the Republic Day parade on Monday.

In the picture captured by cameras and posted on Twitter by some users, Obama was spotted removing his chewing gum while PM Modi was seen trying to explain something to the US president.

3. BSF motorcycle stuntmen get thumbs up from Obama

US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama looked impressed with what they saw during the Republic Day parade. Obama gave a thumbs up to BSF daredevils.

4. Obama arrives in own vehicle for R-Day parade

In a departure from tradition, the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, US President Barack Obama, on Monday arrived in his own highly-secured bomb-proof vehicle, 'The Beast,' at Rajpath.

The Republic Day chief guest normally travels with the President of India in his car from Rashtrapati Bhawan.

President Pranab Mukherjee arrived soon after. Since 2012, the President of India travels in a heavily armoured black Mercedes Benz S600 (W221) Pullman Guard. The armour is designed to protect against military rifle shots, bomb shrapnels and other explosives.

However, this is not the first time that Obama has been spotted chewing gum during an important function. Though there was a lot of commentary on social media on his chewing gum at a formal ceremony.

Comments on Twitter included remarks by author Shobhaa De, who said, "Barack bhai working his jaws overtime and chewing gum! At least it isn't gutka. But seriously - gum during a formal parade?".

"Glad to see @BarackObama is so human. Like most Americans, he chews gum. Anyone know what brand?," was how noted film-maker Shekhar Kapur reacted.

Obama was slammed on social media for chewing gum at the APEC summit held in Beijing. Obama was also caught chewing gum at a World War II ceremony in France.

Earlier, in a departure from tradition, the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, US President Barack Obama, on Monday arrived in his own highly-secured bomb-proof vehicle, 'The Beast,' at Rajpath.

The Republic Day chief guest normally travels with the President of India in his car from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

American media in past has commented about Obama's habit of chewing gum while referring to his medical report, according to which the US president was in excellent health except for a minor problem of "history of smoking".

But Obama was now "tobacco free" buoyed by the "occasional use" of "nicotine gum", said a report in Washington Post.

Republic Day parade: Obama watches India's military might, cultural heritage

NEW DELHI: Multi-hued images of India's rich cultural diversity and military might as well as achievements in diverse fields unfolded on Monday at the 66th Republic Day parade which had a US President — Barack Obama — as the chief guest for the first time.

Obama's attendance at the Republic Day celebrations was unlike any other event he has participated in during his overseas travel as president. He spent more than two hours on an outdoor viewing platform, an unusual amount of time given Secret Service security concerns. Obama nodded in approval as tanks and rocket launchers, some of them Russian-made, rolled down the parade route and helicopters ferrying Indian flags flew overhead.

Obama was seated next to Modi, donning a multicoloured 'bandhej safa'(turban), as the two leaders chatted and enjoyed the annual spectacle. A smiling US President was seen nodding in appreciation on several occasions.

As the nearly two-hour-long parade, showcasing the country's 'unity in diversity' marched down the Rajpath in drizzle and overcast skies, thousands of spectators gathered along the route and cheered in joy.

The national capital was wrapped in unprecedented security blanket as thousands of security personnel kept a hawk's vigil in and around the Rajpath area.

In a departure from tradition for the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, Obama arrived in his own highly-secured bomb-proof vehicle, 'the Beast,' at Rajpath.

A highlight of this year's parade was the display for the first time of the recently acquired long-range maritime surveillance and anti-submarine P-8I aircraft and the long-range advanced MiG-29K fighter plane.

The synchronised military and police contingents led by General Officer Commanding (Delhi), Lt General Subroto Mitra marched proudly to the lilting tunes of bands through Rajpath where President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Pranab Mukherjee took the salute from a specially erected dais.

Alongside Obama, the first US President to attend the celebrations, the ceremonial parade was watched by his wife Michelle, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the country's top political and military brass, besides the diplomatic community.

A massive ground-to-air security apparatus was put in place in the national capital turning the city into virtually an impregnable fortress. Snipers of National Security Guard were deployed at all high-rises along the parade route.

The arrangements were made to ensure an incident-free Republic Day celebrations and foolproof security to the American President, who arrived here on Sunday.

As part of the seven-layered security, around 45,000 security personnel were deployed across the city while the commandos of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Delhi Police kept a hawk-eye vigil at important locations.

The unfurling of the tricolour by the President and playing of the national anthem were followed by a customary 21-gun salute.

The parade began shortly after Mukherjee and Obama arrived at the saluting base separately at the ceremonial boulevard—Rajpath. Traditionally, the President accompanies the chief guest in his limousine.

Before the commencement of the parade, Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh and Major Mukund Varadarajan were posthumously conferred the highest peacetime gallantry award Ashok Chakra by the President.

Major Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Kumar laid down their lives while battling groups of militants in separate operations in Shopian and Kupwara districts of Kashmir respectively.

Among the main attractions of the ceremonial parade were 25 colourful tableaux representing India's cultural and linguistic diversity as also signifying the vision of the future India as envisaged by the current dispensation.

So, a massive mechanised lion made out of gear-tooth wheels, symbolic of the government's 'Make in India' policy or a mock-up of a high-speed bullet train drew cheers from the crowd as they rolled down the majestic avenue.

Besides, the tableaux for 'Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana' helmed by the department of financial services, the ministry of women and Child Development-led exhibit featuring live performances by women themed on 'Beti Bachaho, Beti Padhao' campaign also won many hearts.

And, with "women's empowerment" being the theme of this year's Republic Day parade, another attraction at the annual extravaganza was the contingents of all-women officers of the three Services marching for the first time on the Rajpath.

First-ever women's contingent at R-Day parade

While 16 of the tableaux belonging to the states and the union territories represented the cultural and architectural wealth of the country, the remaining nine were from various central ministries and departments themed on 'Ma Ganga' to 'Yoga' among others.

Colurful performances by schoolchildren delighted President Obama as much as the crowd in general.

Another military attraction was the display of Army version of indigenously developed surface-to-air Akash medium range missile and Weapon Locating Radar, both by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Indian Army's laser-guided missile capable T-90 Bheeshma tank, infantry combat vehicle BMP-II (Sarath) followed by T-72 with Trawl too proved to be a major draw in the mechanised columns.

These were followed by 'Pinaka' multiple barrel launcher system. The Mobile Autonomous Launcher of BRAHMOS missile system, three dimensional tactical control radar, satellite on the move communication platform and rapidly deployable satellite terminal (RADSAT) followed next.

An Indian Air Force tableau with the theme "50 years of 1965 War" was next in line at the majestic Rajpath, dazzling VIPs, VVIPs and spectators alike.

In keeping with the Indian Navy's theme "Ensuring Safe Seas for a Resurgent Nation" - the Naval Tableau displayed a few of its frontline assets in all four dimensions of maritime warfare.

Navy's march to self-reliance and indigenisation was showcased by the models of indigenously constructed destroyer INS Kolkata launching a BrahMos missile with the Advanced Light Helicopter "Dhruv" in the background.

The second Naval tableau, titled "Bharatiya Nau Sena aur Nari Shakti", represented the four Indian Navy women officers who braved vagaries of the seas and participated in an ocean voyage from Goa to Rio-de-Janeiro in Brazil on board Indian Naval Sailing Vessel 'Mhadei'.

The marching contingents of paramilitary and other forces included those from BSF, Assam Rifles, Coast Guard, CRPF, Indo -Tibetan Border Police, CISF, Sashastra Seema Bal, Railway Protection Force, Delhi Police, National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme.

The camel-mounted band of BSF and the ex-servicemen marching contingent too added to the attraction.

Among the state's tableau, Gujarat and Karnakaka had particular appeal.

While the home state of Prime Minister Modi showcased the ambitious project of building the 'Statue of Unity' symbolically represented by that of Sardar Vallabhahi Patel and the Sardar Sarovar Yojana, the southern state charmed everyone especially the kids with its tableau, huge scale-model, fashioned on the famed wooden toys of Channapatna, located in the outskirts of Bengaluru.

New-born state Telangana, making its Republic Day debut showcased its illustrious festival 'Bonalu', celebrated to worship Mahakali goddess in the month of Ashada.

For Jammu and Kashmir, the dazzling beauty of the region was displayed through Rouff dance of Kashmir, flower dance of Ladakh and Kud dance of Jammu regions.

Haryana made its presence through its Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, famous for hosting migratory birds coming from Europe, Siberia and central Asia.

Besides, CPWD which made a special floral tableau last year showcasing the Rajpath from India Gate to Raisina Hill this year chose the theme of 'Maa Ganga', depicting her origin from Gaumukh.

Ministry of law and justice brought out a huge replica of the Indian Constitution as part of its display while ministry of AYUSH, showcased Yoga, Ayurveda, Unani and other traditional medicinal systems of India.

Maharashtra presented the 'Wari (pilgrimage) to Pandharpur' as its theme while Goa showcased the industry of fishing. Assam presented incredible Majuli island, while Andhra Pradesh's tableau was themed on Makar Sankranti festival. Madhya Pradesh presented Bhagoria, festival of love and matchmaking.

Uttarakhand showcased the Kedarnath Temple, Jharkhand its terracotta temples in Maluti, Sikkim its cardamom cultivation and Arunachal Pradesh the Igu dance, dance of the Idu Mishmi tribe and Chhattisgarh the Dussehra festival of Bastar.

Uttar Pradesh presented the culture of the Awadh region through its tableau themed around one of its most secular rulers Nawab Wajid Ali Shah.

Also, 20 young brave hearts who won the national bravery awards drove through the Rajpath in gypsies.

A total of 13 Army bands, one band each of Air Force and Navy, eight band of paramilitary forces including Camel-mounted band of BSF and one band each of NCC boys and girls played martial music for the parade.

Incidentally, the paramilitary force celebrated its golden jubilee.

One of the most breathtaking event was the manoeuvres by air force jets and daredevil motorcycle performance 'Jaanbaaz' by BSF personnel.

The rider perform 'Border Men Salute', 'Side Riding', 'Ladder Balancing', 'Communal Harmony', 'Peacock Riding', 'Acrobat', 'Parallel Bar', 'Lotus', 'Seema Prahari' and 'Flag March' formations among others.

The grand finale of the parade was a spectacular flypast by the IAF jets and aircraft.

The flypast commenced with 'Chakra' formation, comprising three Mi-35 helicopters in 'Vic' formation, followed by the 'Hercules' formation comprising three C-130J super Hercules aircraft.

Trailing them was a 'Poseidon' formation comprising one P-8I aircraft flanked by two MiG-29Ks and the 'Globe' formation comprising one C-17 Globemaster flanked by two Su-30s.

Next five Jaguars flew in Arrowhead formation and the five MiG-29 fighters, called the 'Tridents', flew in 'Fulcrum' style.

Three Sukhoi (Su-30 MkI) fighter jets then made the "Trishul" formation by flying over the Rajpath, and once in front of the saluting dais, the three aircraft split upwards, making a 'Trishul' in the sky.

The flypast concluded with another Su-30 MkI carrying out a "Vertical Charlie" manoeuvre over the saluting dais.

Obama visit: India, United States close to breaking nuclear-deal deadlock

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 25 Januari 2015 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: Hours ahead of US President Barack Obama's arrival here, India and the US seemed to be on the verge of a breakthrough in their negotiations to break the deadlock in operationalizing the civil nuclear agreement, top government sources said.

There was "cautious optimism" on the Indian side that Obama was going to use his executive powers to temper the US insistence on acquiring tracking rights perpetually over nuclear material, even those sourced from third countries for use in US reactors, over and above inspections by the IAEA. According to the agreement likely to be reached, the US authorities will go by assurances provided by IAEA over India's use of nuclear material and its non-proliferation commitments.

The third contact group meeting in London last week had failed to address this crucial administrative issue, leaving it to Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the final call.

On the other contentious issue of liability, the government had said that progress had been made with the US showing interest in India's offer to build an insurance pool to cover suppliers against whom India's 2010 nuclear liability law provides right of recourse in the event of a nuclear accident. Sources didn't rule out last-minute glitches, but said there certainly was intent on both sides to announce a breakthrough.

As Obama arrives in New Delhi on Sunday, there is enthusiasm that the visit will yield tangible breakthroughs for both sides. Apart from an agreement on the nuclear issue, a "friendship accord" is in the works, which will see India and the US working together on common challenges like counterterrorism. India and the US may also stitch up the first co-development pact to manufacture UAVs in India.

NaMObama may energize talks to the next level

The unfinished business of the nuclear deal has been a source of frustration on both the Indian and the American sides. During the September meeting in Washington, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama had set up a contact group to iron out the outstanding problems.

READ ALSO: Modi succeeded where Narasimha Rao failed

There are three big-ticket issues to be resolved — first, the operationalization of the deal itself with administrative arrangements where India was resisting US' intrusive "national verification" demands; second, the Indian nuclear liability law holds suppliers liable in case of damage, which has hobbled foreign and domestic suppliers and third, India's membership to the four non-proliferation regimes which would open up high technology for India. Indian and US negotiators have been meeting in New Delhi, Vienna and London to reach an understanding.

The most important part of the next couple of days will be the personal interactions between Modi and Obama, which both sides hope will be the foundation for an important transition of the relationship to the next level. Certainly, Modi's own political energy will be evident, even if Obama is nearing the end of his own term.

The White House press secretary Josh Earnest was quoted as saying, "We know that PM Modi is very interested in injecting the kind of energy and vitality into the relationship between the US and India. I can tell you that President Obama shares that desire and making the first-ever second trip by a US president to India during his presidency I think reflects the President's commitment to India, the Indian people, and the relationship between the US and India."

The business part of the visit promises a lot of cheer to industry from both countries, even if H1B visas and Totalization pacts are left over for later.

Obama's India visit a big development: Pak daily

ISLAMABAD: US President Barack Obama's visit to India for the country's Republic Day celebrations is a "big development" and Islamabad must "ensure it does not suffer as a new era of US-India relations gets underway", even though "there is an element of playing to the gallery" involved in such visits, leading Pakistani dailies said Sunday.

"Obama's arrival in India in connection with the Republic Day celebrations is a big development," the Daily Times said in an editorial.

"A triangular conundrum exists among Pakistan, India and the US. It is the policy of the US to build friendly relations with both India and Pakistan, and not with one at the expense of the other. During the ongoing recession, the huge potential of the Indian economy has become vital for the US."

It said that India is potentially a very big market for the US, whose economy could be lifted out of the doldrums through the sale of weapons to India.

The daily added the US considers India a possible counterweight to China in the region.

"With regards to Pakistan, the trust deficit between the US and Pakistan due the duality of policies of Pakistan in the past, which still causes suspicion, despite a belated crackdown against militants, stated now to be irrespective of 'good' Taliban and 'bad' Taliban and their supporters."

The Pakistan government is still unsure how to deal with elements that support the Taliban, the newspaper said.

It, however, added that the US knows the difficulties of Pakistan and it has understood terrorism cannot be eliminated through a military crackdown only and that is why Washington has not discontinued its aid programme for Islamabad despite hostile opposition from the Republican-dominated US Congress.

Another leading Pakistani daily, The News, said the agenda Obama's visit will be primarily economic.

"India is currently in a battle with China to be the primary regional power and any signs that the US is decisively shifting towards it will not be taken too well in Beijing," it said.

The editorial said that for Pakistan the worry may be that greater economic cooperation will automatically be followed by further political cooperation, leaving Pakistan out in the cold.

Pakistan has to keep making its own case as loudly and forcefully as it can to ensure it does not suffer as a new era of US-India relations gets underway, it added.

"To be sure, there is an element of playing to the gallery involved in all such visits," Dawn editorial said.

"Indian officialdom and its relatively nationalist media will likely try and elicit further comments on Pakistan from Obama and other American officials that can be used by India to portray Pakistan in an even more negative manner."

The newspaper said, Pakistan and India need to get out of this habit of incessant, meaningless competition: "if Obama goes to India, that is India's business when Obama visits Pakistan, that should be Pakistan's bilateral matter."

Perhaps the only thing that should be remembered, or even reiterated publicly, is that dialogue between Pakistan and India needs to restart, the daily noted.

There are several major and legitimate concerns on both sides, and, regardless of the state of relations with India, Pakistan's foremost concern is to win the fight against militancy domestically, it added.

Woman officer leads guard of honour for Obama

NEW DELHI: "I am an officer first and then a woman," said a proud Wing Commander Pooja Thakur after she became the first lady officer to lead the Inter-Service Guard of Honour which was inspected by US President Barack Obama at Rashtrapati Bhavan here today.

"It is a proud moment to be representing the Indian Air Force commanding the Inter-Services Guard of Honour and that too to Mr Barack Obama," Thakur said.

Asked how difficult it was for a woman officer in the Services, she said there is no differentiation.

"I would say that we are first officers, be it male or female. We are just the same. We are given the same kind of training. We are equals," she told PTI here.

Thakur, who joined the Indian Air Force in 2000, belongs to the administrative branch and is currently posted at 'Disha', the publicity cell under the Directorate of Personnel Officers at the Air Force Headquarters.

Asked how her parents felt when they first heard that she will be commanding the Guard of Honour, Thakur said they were proud.

"They were very proud because they would be seeing me and hoping that I would do well. Presenting Inter-Services Guard of Honour to an important dignitary is a proud moment for everyone of us," she said.

Talking about why she joined the IAF, the young officer said it was not about a job but the way of life she wanted for herself.

"It is not a job but a way of life. I wanted to have this way of life. I had the opportunity of knowing about it since my father was in the Services too," she said.

The officer's father retired as a Colonel from the Indian Army.

'Nari shakti' (woman power) is the theme for Republic Day parade this year where Obama is the chief guest.

For the first time, all women officer contingents of the army, air force and navy will walk down the Rajpath tomorrow.

Earlier, in a departure from protocol, Narendra Modi received US President Barack Obama at the Delhi airport, becoming the second Indian Prime Minister after Manmohan Singh to extend this special gesture to Obama.

During his last visit to India in November, 2010, Obama and his wife Michelle were received at the airport by Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur.

The sight of both Obama and Modi hugging each other warmly was reminiscent of a similar bonhomie enjoyed by the US President with Singh. He had hugged the then Prime Minister and greeted Kaur with a peck on her cheek. Michelle had repeated the gesture to Singh and Kaur.
