PUNE: A 55-year-old man, his wife and daughter were found dead in their house near Kabirbaug in Narayan Peth on Sunday morning. The police suspect the family died of suffocation from the smoke emanating from the burning of coal in an urn in the bedroom.

The Vishrambaug police identified the deceased as Bhagwan Dhondiba Ghare, Mangala (50) and Pournima (22). Ghare's son Dheeraj (23) had stayed the night at another house that the family owned in the same area.
Senior police inspector Rajendra Sawant told TOI that the family had probably burned coal to stay warm during the night. The windows of the house were found shut. He said the police did not suspect foul play.

Around 8am on Sunday, employees of Ghare's workshop came to the house and got no response after knocking the door. "They then called up Dheeraj, who came to the house. He tried calling his parents and sister on their cell phones," said Ghare's neighbour Sachin Garud.

Garud said one of Ghare's employees climbed up to the first floor of the house and managed to get in. "He, however, found the bedroom locked from inside. We called up the Vishrambaug police, who broke open the door and found Ghare, his wife and daughter unconscious. Ghare was lying on the bed, while his wife and daughter were on the floor. They were taken to hospital where they were declared dead," Garud said.

Garud said Ghare had been running his workshop at Narayan Peth since the last 20 years. Around six months back, he had constructed a three-room house above his workshop and moved in with the family. Ghare's older daughter is married and lives in Pali in Raigad district. Dheeraj used to help his father in the workshop.

"He was very decent man and was always busy with work. He would start work soon after his daily morning walk," Garud said.

Garud said Ghare had planned a grand housewarming function on January 26. The couple's daughter, Pournima, was proficient in Japanese. "She completed a course in Japanese after her graduation. She had plans to go to Japan for higher studies next month," Garud said.

A woman who lives near Ghare's residence told TOI that she knew his wife since her marriage. "Mangala used to visit the workshop for pujas and other functions. The couple would take good care of their employees," she said.
