Mumbai local train services resume after violent protests over disruption

MUMBAI: Train services on both Central Railway Main and Harbour lines resumed on Friday after motormen's union called off their agitation following assurance from RPF that they will be provided with police protection.

Motormen refused to drive trains after one of them sustained minor injuries in an attack in an incident at Thane.

This led to the motormen union calling for suspension of all operations unless they were given proper police protection.

"Train services have restarted although it will take time for services to return back to normalcy," said a railway spokesperson.

Trains are still plying at a snail's pace and many commuters have already jumped off trains and taken the road route.

However, reports from different stations revealed that problems still existed. According to report, trains in Harbour line and Kanjumarg stations are still 'limping'.

Mumbai local trains hit: As it happened

Thousands of commuters were stranded for several hours in the morning as services stopped on the Central line.

The incident began with a pantograph related technical problem near Thakurli station around 7.30am.


The disruption in Mumbai local train services led to violence on the streets.

This led to bunching of trains and delays for more than half an hour during morning peak hour rush.

As crowds swelled at the platforms, irate mob pelted stones and blocked trains at Diva station.

There were agitation at Thane, Dombivli and Kalyan stations as public went berserk.

The irate mob damaged railway property, threw ATVM machines on tracks and also torched three cars outside Diva station.


Angry passengers damaged property and indulged in violence over delay in Mumbai local train services.

Later, services were also disrupted on the Harbour line adding to the chaos.

Senior politicians reached the spot and appealed to citizens to calm down.

The police lathicharged the protestors and cleared the tracks before the first train left Diva at 12.30pm.

Around 1 pm, the services on Harbour line were re-started.

Trains are still running very slow, said a commuter.
