'Why Shashi’s wife, why not us?' say political divas

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 31 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: The four wealthiest grand dames of Indian politics have taken very serious exception to Narendra Modi's comment on Sunanda Tharoor, sources told Mocktale on Tuesday. Modi had singled out Sunanda Tharoor as a "Rs-50-crore girlfriend" two days ago, infuriating the Twitterati who rued Modi's "bad taste". Even more furious were India's four grand ladies, who, while rustling along in their respective silk saris/kurtas, solitaires gleaming in their ears and rubies blazing red around their necks, condemned the fact that they were willfully ignored by Modi despite carrying much, much higher price tags. The foursome alleged political sidelining on Modi's part and said they would not take this kind of discrimination lying down.

"This is intoler-r-r-rable," said Lady Lasagne, with a scowl that once launched a thousand poll rivals. "Most unfair-r-r. Am worth a gazillion lire and my rivals at least know what I'm worth, as much as those who've fallen out of my favour. Modi himself estimated my travel bills at Rs 1880 crore, and now Shashi's wife takes the cake with a mere Rs 50 crore tag?" she rued, picking up her cell phone which continued to whirr noiselessly. The call was from Behn Maya-watan, the big sister from fantasy country. "Hi, Maya-watan," she said, "What's up?" with a heavy accent that made "What's up" sound remarkably similar to "Pizza". A meaty concoction of lasagne was her all-time favourite, though.

The ire in Maya's voice made her forget about food, though. "What is this?" said Maya-watan, who was irked that her "official" assets of Rs 112 crore had been neglected by Modi. "If I can send an empty jet to fetch my sandals, I can send a fleet of drones to wipe off a man who dares devalue me in the open political market," she said, showing off her knowledge of political markets and deals in which she called herself an expert. For once, Maya-watan and Lady Lasagne seemed united in their ire at being undervalued, the impending CBI probe against Maya-watan notwithstanding, thanks to Modi's insensitive jest. This was no mean feat - "Dost bhi na kar paye dushman ne jo kaam kiya hai," sang the happy lady.

No sooner did she put down her little cell phone than it rang again. This time, it was Jaya-lullaby from the prosperous expanses of the rich state of Tamil Nadu. The stately lady, charming in her gait and stature, could hardly control herself. "Why-aiyyo" she said, "did Modi forget my commercial assets worth crores, besides my 750 pairs of shoes and 10000 saris," wailed she. She was visibly upset, er...audibly upset, thought Lady Lasagne. The ladies were united in grief.

They were already in conference, planning it out like the three witches in Macbeth when the fourth lady barged into the conference call. "Hi, humein bhool na jaana," boomed their friend from Bihar. Yes indeed it was Rub-dry Devi, who rubbed in her point by saying Modi had been partial and sexist in his approach by not crediting her with the Rs 950 crore fodder scam proceeds. "If what is Shashi's can belong to Sunanda," she complained, "why can't Laal-ooze money be rightfully mine? Main angrezi nahin jaanti, par main insaan to hoon," she said, in her last-ditch humanitarian appeal.

And The Book of Revelry said: Four women shall rise, like pillars from the four corners of India, and shall bash and banish the Man of a Thousand Fancy Headgears who refused to try the Fez. Fini.

Kejriwal's latest: Congress, BJP in Mukesh Ambani's pocket

Mukesh Ambani, not PM, running India: Kejriwal's latest

Mukesh Ambani, not PM, running India: Kejriwal's latest

NEW DELHI: The nexus between politicians and industrialists was the main reason behind rising prices in India, India Against Corruption activist Arivind Kejriwal said on Wednesday.

The IAC played out an audio tape purportedly of talks between lobbyist Niira Radia and former PM A B Vajpayee's foster son-in-law Ranjan Bhattacharya.

In the tapes, Radia and Bhattacharya were heard talking about the composition of the Union ministry.

Kejriawal said that both Congress and BJP were helpless against Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani. In 2000, the NDA had favoured Mukesh Ambani's Reliance in gas pricing, Kejriwal said.

Kejriawal said that Mukesh Ambani was interfering with ministerial appointments. Jaipal Reddy was replaced with Veerappa Moily as oil minister to increase gas prices, the IAC activist said.

After "exposing" Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra and BJP president Nitin Gadkari, speculation was rife throughout the day on Wednesday over the anti-graft body's next target.

Kejriwal and Bhushan had hit a high with their attack on the Haryana government for allegedly winking at DLF offering sweetheart deals to Vadra.

Salman to keep his hands off Kareena

Come November 5, and Kareena Kapoor will start shooting her item song for Dabangg 2 along with Salman Khan. Although the number is titled Fevicol, it will have none of the anticipated physical proximity between the two stars.

On the contrary, choreographer Farah Khan has been categorically asked to keep Kareena and Salman completely a part in the song. And before jumping to any conclusions about who might have thrown in such a no-intimacy clause (could it be the newly-wed Kareena's inlaws?), it may come as a surprise to know that Salman's is the face behind Farah's brief.

We've learnt the actor demanded that the raunchiness in the item number be toned down because he has always seen Kareena as Karisma Kapoor's younger sister. Post her marriage to Saif Ali Khan, he has become even more protective toward his co-star's kid sister.

A source close to Salman told TOI, "There are absolutely no post-marital do's and don'ts for Kareena. She is free to do what she likes. There are no restrictions on her. The women in the Pataudi family whether it is Sharmila or Soha, are free to do what they think is right and Kareena is no exception. The decision to keep the item song at a fun-but-decorous level comes from Salman himself."

Apparently, Salman wanted the item song with Kareena to be done discreetly right from the beginning. "And after the wedding, he is even more conscious of his co-star Lolo's baby sister Bebo being Mrs Kapoor Khan," the source said. Salman was faced with a similar situation earlier in Dabangg, when he had to shoot the Munni Badnaam number with his sister-in-law Malaika Arora Khan.

Meanwhile, it is interesting to note that both the projects Kareena has signed after marriage—the item song in Dabangg 2 and the female lead in Prakash Jha's Satsang—are essentially 'stand-alone' roles. In Dabangg 2, she will perform the item number in Salman's company without the two of them getting too close for comfort. Whereas in Satsang, she is paired with Ajay Devgn but they share no intimate moments.

On the subject of the item song in Dabangg 2, Arbaaz Khan refused to comment on the way it will be shot. Farah Khan remained unavailable for comment.

Shashi Tharoor to Narendra Modi: My wife Sunanda is priceless

Tharoor hits back at Modi, says his wife is priceless

Tharoor hits back at Modi, says his wife is priceless

NEW DELHI: "My wife is priceless," an outraged union minister of state Shashi Tharoor said Tuesday as he took on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his jibe about a "Rs.50 crore girlfriend".

"My wife is worth a lot more than your imaginary 50 crores. She is priceless. But you need2be able2love some1 2understand that," Tharoor said on the microblogging site Twitter.

Tharoor was backed by Congress leader R.P.N. Singh and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat.

"You can understand the type of people who point fingers and make derogatory remarks about women... Their speech speaks stronger than their act," R.P.N. Singh, minister of state for home, told reporters.

Karat lashed out at Modi for his "anti-woman ideology".

"Only a sick and perverted mind representing an anti-women RSS ideology will make such a statement. He is a blot on this country," Karat told IANS on phone from Himachal Pradesh.

Addressing an election rally in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Modi had Monday taken potshots at Tharoor's personal life and said: "Wah kya girlfriend hai. Apne kabhi dekha hai 50 crore ka girlfriend?" (What a girlfriend? Have you ever seen a 50-crore girlfriend).

Modi did not take any names but his meaning was more than clear.

"There was a Congress leader who was a minister. He was accused of amassing wealth from cricket. He had said in parliament that he is not connected to the Rs.50 crore in the lady's name," he had said.

"...And then girlfriend becomes wife, we learn some time later... the issues are still not settled and he (Tharoor) is now made a minister," Modi had added.

Tharoor, who had earlier got into trouble over a remark on "cattle class" on Twitter, found himself in another controversy over Twitter on just his second day in office as minister of state for human resource development.

Tharoor was involved in an IPL cricket controversy involving his then friend and now wife Sunanda Pushkar in 2010, which led to his resignation as minister of state for external affairs.

Superstorm Sandy slams US east coast; New York paralyzed, 16 dead

NEW YORK: Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph (130 kph) and hurled a record-breaking 13-foot (4-meter) surge of seawater at New York City, flooding tunnels, highways, subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street. At least 16 deaths were blamed on the storm.

Sandy knocked out power on Monday to at least 6.2 million people across the US East, and New York's main utility said large sections of lower Manhattan had been plunged into darkness by the storm.

The superstorm also forced President Barack Obama and Republican nominee to cancel campaign events in the key battleground states, punching holes in both campaigns' carefully mapped out strategies to make their closing arguments to voters with only a week left before the November election.

Just before its center reached land, Sandy was stripped of its hurricane status, but the distinction was purely technical, based on its shape and internal temperature. It still packed hurricane-force wind, and forecasters were careful to say it remained every bit as dangerous to the 50 million people in its path.

The full extent of the storm's damage across the region was unclear, and unlikely to become known until day break. Heavy rain and further flooding remain major threats over the next couple of days as the storm makes its way into Pennsylvania and up into New York State. Near midnight, the center of the storm was just outside Philadelphia, and its winds were down to 75 mph (120 kph), just barely hurricane strength.

"We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "This is a once-in-a-long-time storm."

Stock trading will be closed in the US for a second day Tuesday — the first time the New York Stock Exchange will be closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888, when a blizzard struck the city.

The National Hurricane Center announced at 8pm that Sandy had come ashore near Atlantic City. It smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor, from Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph (135 kph). The sea surged a record of nearly 13 feet (4 meters) at the foot of Manhattan, flooding the financial district and subway tunnels.

Sixteen deaths were reported in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Some of the victims were killed by falling trees. Police in Toronto said a woman was killed by a falling sign as high winds closed in on Canada's largest city.

As it made its way toward land, it converged with a cold-weather system that turned into a fearsome superstorm, a monstrous hybrid consisting not only of rain and high wind but of snow. Forecasters warned of 20-foot (6-meter) waves bashing into the Chicago lakefront and up to 3 feet (0.9 meters) of snow in West Virginia.

Storm damage was projected at $10 billion to $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in US history.

President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney suspended their campaigning with just over a week to go before election day.

At the White House, Obama made a direct appeal to those in harm's way: "Please listen to what your state and local officials are saying. When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate. Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given, because this is a powerful storm."

The storm washed away a section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk in New Jersey. Water was splashing over the seawalls at the southern tip of Manhattan.

Bloomberg said late Monday that the worst of the rain had passed for the city, and that the high tide that sent water sloshing into Manhattan from three sides was receding.

Still, authorities also feared the surge of seawater would damage the underground electrical and communications lines in lower Manhattan that are vital to the nation's financial center.

In an attempt to lessen damage from saltwater to the subway system and the electrical network beneath the city's financial district, New York City's main utility cut power to about 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan. But a far wider swath of the city was hit with blackouts caused by flooding and transformer explosions.

About 670,000 customers were without power late Monday in the city and suburban Westchester County.

"This will be one for the record books," said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operations at ConEdison. "This will be the largest storm-related outage in our history."

As the storm approached the Northeast over the weekend, airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights in the region.

Water began pooling in rail yards and on highways near the Hudson River waterfront on Manhattan's far west side. On coastal Long Island, floodwaters swamped cars, downed trees and put neighborhoods under water as beachfronts and fishing villages bore the brunt of the storm. A police car was lost rescuing 14 people from the popular resort Fire Island.

In downtown Manhattan, rescue workers floated bright orange rafts on flooded streets, while police officers with loudspeakers told people to go home.

"Now it's really turning into something," said Brian Damianakes, taking shelter in a bank vestibule and watching a trash can blow down the street in Battery Park.

More than 200 patients — including 20 infants from neonatal intensive care — were moved from New York University's Tisch Hospital after its power went out and a backup generator failed. The patients, some on respirators operating on battery power, were taken to other hospitals.

A construction crane atop a luxury high-rise in midtown Manhattan collapsed in high winds and dangled precariously. Residents in surrounding buildings were ordered to move to lower floors and the streets below were cleared, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The facade of a four-story building in the Chelsea neighborhood crumbled and collapsed suddenly, leaving the lights, couches, cabinets and desks inside visible from the street. No one was hurt, although some of the falling debris hit a car.

As the storm approached the Northeast over the weekend, airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights in the region.

The major American stock exchanges closed for the day, the first unplanned shutdown since the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. Wall Street expected to remain closed on Tuesday. The United Nations canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters.

Not only was the New York subway shut down, but the Holland Tunnel connecting New York to New Jersey was closed, as was a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and several other spans were closed because of high winds.

Authorities had warned that New York City and Long Island could get the worst of the storm surge: an 11-foot (3-meter) onslaught of seawater that could swamp lower Manhattan, flood the subways and damage the underground network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation's financial capital.

"Leave immediately. Conditions are deteriorating very rapidly, and the window for you getting out safely is closing," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told those in low-lying areas earlier in the day.

New York University hospital lost backup power and was being evacuated, Bloomberg said. The hospital is located near the East River in an area of lower Manhattan where flooding was reported.

Defiant New Yorkers jogged, pushed strollers and took snapshots of churning New York Harbor during the day Monday, trying to salvage normal routines.

Without most stores and museums open, tourists were left to snap photos of the World Trade Center site, Wall Street and Times Square in largely deserted streets.

Belgian tourist Gerd Van don Mooter-Dedecker, 56, wandered in to Trinity Church after learning that a planned shopping spree with her husband Monday wouldn't happen. "We brought empty suitcases so we could fill them up," she said.

As rain from the leading edges began to fall over the Northeast on Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City, 50,000 in Delaware and 30,000 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Obama declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits.

Off North Carolina, a replica of the 18th-century sailing ship HMS Bounty that was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" went down in the storm, and 14 crew members were rescued by helicopter from rubber lifeboats bobbing in 18-foot (5.4-meterseas. Another crew member was found hours afterward but was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The captain was still missing.

Nissan dealers refuse to take vehicles

TNN | Oct 30, 2012, 08.00AM IST
CHENNAI: Nissan Motor India is locked in a faceoff with its dealers because of which Nissan dealerships are learnt to have stopped taking supplies of vehicles in the last one week. The dispute is over the issue of Nissan's master franchisee Hover Automotive India (HAI).

The confrontation led to Nissan dealers forming a separate forum - Nissan Dealer Forum - and opening communications with Nissan Motor Japan, independent of HAI. Sources also say the Nissan India management has now initiated discussions with its dealers on the issue and will likely address their concerns at a conference on October 30 in Chennai.

When contacted, a Nissan India spokesman skirted the dispute and said in an email reply: "Nissan entered the Indian market in 2005 and, since then, we have been working in close partnership with HAI to swiftly and successfully expand our business. Annual sales have tripled; we have launched five all-new models including the locally-produced Micra, Sunny and Evalia; and our dealership network has expanded rapidly to cover nearly 70% of the market."

To ensure high service standards, the spokesman said, "We continuously review any areas of concern and apply remedial action to achieve our goals in terms of dealer support and world-class customer satisfaction. Our relationship is stronger and HAI continues to work diligently to help drive our performance in one of our most strategically important world markets and further expand our sales and marketing initiatives in India."

Nissan dealers are upset with the company's 'step-down approach' of a master franchisee which they claim can't work here. The bone of contention is apparently some issues of sales tax and Nissan's focus on exports . The dealers are upset that the company is focusing more on exports rather than domestic sales. Dealers say they have created workshop facilities that are lying unused due to low domestic sales. Typically, a dealer makes money on service and spares of vehicles sold rather than sales of new cars. Sources say Nissan dealers feel alliance partner Renault is better at supporting its distribution network with a good campaign and aggressive product launches.

STUCK IN WRONG GEAR

Company's dealers say Nissan's step-down approach of a master franchisee in Hover Automotive India doesn't work Dealers also claim workshops are lying unused due to Nissan's focus on exports A 'Nissan Dealer Forum' has been formed that is now in direct talks with Nissan Motor Japan, without HAI.

Hurricane Sandy could endanger 50 million people, Obama declares emergency

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

NEW YORK: Hurricane Sandy threatened some 50 million people on the heavily populated East Coast on Monday, and forecasters warned that New York could bear the brunt of the one-of-a-kind superstorm.

Sandy forced the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing for higher ground, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds, soaking rain and a surging wall of water up to 11 feet (3.35 meters).

The storm stayed on a predicted path that could take it over Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York on its way to a collision course with two other weather systems, creating a superstorm with the potential for havoc over 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) from the East Coast to the Great Lakes region.

Many workers planned to stay home on Monday as subways, buses and trains shut down under the threat of flooding that could inundate tracks and tunnels. Airports also closed, and authorities warned that the time for evacuation was running out or already past. Utilities brought in extra crews in anticipation of widespread power failures.

The center of the storm was positioned to come ashore on Monday night in New Jersey, meaning the worst of the surge could be in the northern part of that state and in neighboring New York City and on Long Island. Higher tides brought by a full moon compounded the threat to the metropolitan area of about 20 million people.

"This is the worst-case scenario," said Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As rain from the leading edges began to fall over the Northeast on Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people from Maryland to Connecticut were ordered to leave low-lying coastal areas, including 375,000 in lower Manhattan and other parts of New York City and 30,000 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where the city's 12 casinos shut down for only the fourth time ever.

"I think this one's going to do us in," said Mark Palazzolo, who boarded up his bait-and-tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, with the same wood he used in past storms, crossing out the names of Hurricanes Isaac and Irene and spray-painting "Sandy" next to them. "I got a call from a friend of mine from Florida last night who said, `Mark, get out! If it's not the storm, it'll be the aftermath. People are going to be fighting in the streets over gasoline and food."'

President Barack Obama declared emergencies in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorizing federal relief work to begin well ahead of time. He promised the government would "respond big and respond fast" after the storm hits.

"My message to the governors as well as to the mayors is anything they need, we will be there, and we will cut through red tape," Obama said. "We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules."

Authorities warned that New York could get hit with a surge of seawater that could swamp parts of lower Manhattan, flood subway tunnels and cripple the network of electrical and communications lines that are vital to the nation's financial center.

Major US financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago, planned a rare shutdown Monday. The NYSE shut down on Sept. 27, 1985, for Hurricane Gloria. The United Nations also shut down and canceled all meetings at its New York headquarters.

New York called off school Monday for the city's 1.1 million students and announced it would suspend all train, bus and subway service Sunday night. More than 5 million riders a day depend on the transit system.

"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."

New Jersey governor Chris Christie was typically blunt: "Don't be stupid. Get out."

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney reshuffled campaign plans as the storm approached.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 mph (136 kph) early Monday, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began traveling northward, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard. As of 5am on Monday, it was centered about 385 miles (620 kilometers) south-southeast of New York City, moving to the north at 15 mph (24 kph), with hurricane-force winds extending an unusual 175 miles (280 kilometers) from its center.

Sandy was expected to hook inland on Monday, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic, and then cut across into Pennsylvania and travel up through New York state.

Forecasters said the combination could bring close to a foot of rain in places, a potentially lethal storm surge across much of the region, and punishing winds that could cause widespread power outages that last for days. The storm could also dump up to 2 feet (0.6 meters) of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Airlines canceled nearly 7,500 flights and Amtrak began suspending train service across the Northeast. New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore moved to shut down their subways, buses and trains. Those cities shut down their schools, as did Boston. Non-essential government offices closed in the nation's capital.

Nearly 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, a replica of the tall ship made famous in the film "Munity on the Bounty" was taking on water and without propulsion with 17 people aboard. The Coast Guard was monitoring the situation early Monday.

Despite the dire warnings, some souls refused to budge.

Jonas Clark of Manchester Township, New Jersey — right in Sandy's projected path — stood outside a convenience store, calmly sipping a coffee and wondering why people were working themselves "into a tizzy."

"I've seen a lot of major storms in my time, and there's nothing you can do but take reasonable precautions and ride out things the best you can," said Clark, 73.

Nitin Gadkari's leg show voted better than Sharon Stone's

A recent photo of the BJP honcho Nitin Gadkari wearing khaki shorts juxtaposed with an old, iconic photo of the Hollywood heater Sharon Stone in the film Basic Instinct went viral on social networking sites a few days ago.

MUMBAI: A recent photo of the BJP honcho Nitin Gadkari wearing khaki shorts juxtaposed with an old, iconic photo of the Hollywood heater Sharon Stone in the film Basic Instinct went viral on social networking sites a few days ago. The comparison of Gadkari's manly, hairy legs with Stone's nubile pins drew a lot of `likes', 'shares' and comments from netizens.

Encouraged by this huge public response to the leg shows, a leading market research company decided to do a sample survey in order to know whose legs the citizens actually preferred more -- Gadkari's or Stone's. The results were baffling, to say the least, for the surveyors. Over 95% of those surveyed stated that they found Gadkari's legs much better than Stone's. Here's a snippet of the boardroom meeting of the market research company immediately after the results were out:

Vice President: "It's a bit difficult to comprehend why so many people have preferred Gadkari's legs over the lovely legs of Sharon Stone. Was this survey carried out at some gay party zone?"

Chief Researcher: "No sir, the sample survey of 1,000 respondents was evenly distributed among men and women of all sexual preferences. Perhaps they were feeling rather patriotic, and hence voted for an Indian over a foreigner."

Vice President: "Nonsense! C'mon you tell me who has better legs in these blessed pics? Sharon Stone wins hands-and-legs-and-everything-else down! Just look at those two beauties... don't you agree?"

Chief Researcher: "Er, yeah sir. Stone has by far much more shapelier legs. May be it's that lighted cigarette in her mouth that made her lose points. You know, how very health conscious we all have become now in the 21st century. And her film Basic Instinct is so very outdated 20th century phenomenon. Hence the results clearly show... that smoking is clearly not sexy now."

Vice President: "Umm, you may have a point there, though. But I want to speak to all the field assistants connected to this."

Senior Field Assistant (looking a bit uneasy): "Sir, in hindsight I feel that the survey was not evenly distributed among the sample society cross-section."

Vice President (puzzled): "What the...! What do you exactly mean by that?"

Senior Field Assistant: "Well sir, we mainly interviewed truck drivers, bus drivers, taxi drivers, autorickshaw drivers and private car drivers. Basically, they were all drivers."

Vice President: "So? You mean drivers don't like Stone's legs?"

Senior Field Assistant: "Actually sir, they were all praises for Gadkari because of the recent news that his own driver had reportedly been promoted as a company director. So obviously they were a little biased towards him. They all feel that they too can become directors or vice presidents some day!"

Obama declares emergency as Hurricane Sandy gains strength in United States

NEW YORK: Hurricane Sandy grew stronger before dawn on Monday as it churned northward through the Atlantic Ocean en route to what forecasters agreed would be a devastating landfall, possibly within 100 miles of New York City. At 5am, the huge storm was producing sustained winds of 85 miles an hour after turning due north, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was expected to veer again to the northwest later Monday morning and take dead aim at the coastline of New Jersey.

Officials warned that the powerful surge the storm was creating in the ocean, combined with the strong winds, could wreak destruction in the northeast for days. As many as 10 million people were expected to lose electricity as Sandy toppled trees and light poles and ripped down power lines.

As the storm bore down on some of the nation's most densely populated areas, city and state officials went into emergency mode. The New York City subway system and all of the region's commuter trains and buses were shut down. The major stock exchanges called off all trading for Monday and Broadway theaters canceled their shows on Sunday evening and Monday.

mayor Michael R Bloomberg ordered the evacuation of more than 370,000 people in low-lying communities from Coney Island in Brooklyn to Battery Park City in Manhattan and gave 1.1 million schoolchildren a day off on Monday. The city opened evacuation shelters at 76 public schools.

Warning that the flooding would be "life-threatening," forecasters and government officials implored residents in the areas designated for evacuation not to try to ride this storm out.

"We're going to have a lot of impact, starting with the storm surge," said Craig Fugate, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "Think, 'Big'."

The subway closing began at 7pm to darken every one of the city's 468 stations for the second time in 14 months, as officials encouraged the public to stay indoors and worked to prevent a storm surge from damaging tracks and signal equipment in the tunnels. A suspension of bus service was ordered for 9pm

The closing this year seemed more ominous. The shutdown before Tropical Storm Irene last year began at noon on a Saturday, and service resumed before the workweek started on Monday. This time, officials warned, it might be Wednesday before trains were running again.

Another fear in the northeast was that winds from the storm might knock down power lines, and that surging waters could flood utility companies' generators and other equipment.

Forecasters said the hurricane was a strikingly powerful storm that could reach far inland. Hurricane-force winds from the storm stretched 175 miles from the center, an unusually wide span, and tropical storm winds extended outward 520 miles. Forecasters said they expected high-altitude winds to whip every state east of the Mississippi River.

President Obama, who attended a briefing with officials from FEMA in Washington called Hurricane Sandy "a big and serious storm." He said federal officials were "making sure that we've got the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system."

"My main message to everybody involved is that we have to take this seriously," the president said.

The hurricane center said through the day on Sunday that Hurricane Sandy was "expected to bring life-threatening storm surge flooding to the mid-Atlantic Coast, including Long Island Sound and New York Harbor."

The storm preparations and cancellations were not confined to New York.

Amtrak said it would cancel most trains on the eastern seaboard, and Philadelphia shut down its mass transit system.

In the New York area, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's commuter rail lines, which suffered the heaviest damage during Tropical Storm Irene, were suspended beginning at 7pm on Sunday.

New Jersey Transit began rolling back service gradually at 4pm, with a full shutdown expected by 2am

The Staten Island Ferry was scheduled to stop running by 8.30pm, PATH trains at midnight.

The nation's major airlines canceled thousands of flights in the northeast. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the three major airports in the New York City area, said it expected major carriers to cease operations entirely by Sunday evening. The Coast Guard closed New York Harbor — cruise ships were told to go elsewhere — and the northeast faced the possibility of being all but shut down on Monday.

Federal offices in the Washington area will be closed; only emergency employees will be on the job. The Washington transit system — its Metrorail subway and its buses — will also be shut down.

The United Nations canceled all meetings at its headquarters in Manhattan.

Broadway shows were canceled on Sunday and Monday, as were performances at Carnegie Hall.

Schools in Baltimore, Boston and Washington called off classes for Monday.

Many public libraries said their reading rooms would be closed for the day, and parks department workers in Central Park told people to leave on Sunday and to stay away until the storm passed.

The New York Stock Exchange, which initially said its trading floor would be open on Monday, decided to close the floor and suspend all trading on Monday. The closing was the first caused by bad weather since Hurricane Gloria in 1985, although the opening bell has been delayed a number of times — once during a blizzard in January 1996 — and the exchange was closed for three days after the Sept. 11 attacks. The Nasdaq exchange also announced it would be closed Monday.

The hurricane center said the surges could reach 11 feet in New York Harbor, Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay in New Jersey — significantly higher than previous forecasts and significantly above the levels recorded during the tropical storm last year.

Forecasters said the water could top 8 feet from Ocean City, Md., to the border between Connecticut and Rhode Island. They predicted the waves would rise to 6 feet on the south shore of Cape Cod.

Hour after hour on Sunday, long before high tide, high waves pounded the dunes that protect the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

And in East Hampton, NY, where Mabel Harmon and her neighbors had spent the day tying down patio furniture, the wind was already "blowing like crazy," she said Sunday afternoon.

Forecasters also warned that rain could saturate the ground and that trees could tumble across roads or onto power lines.

From North Carolina to Connecticut, officials declared emergencies and directed residents to leave areas near the shore.

Delaware ordered coastal communities evacuated by 8pm Sunday.

In New Jersey, gamblers scrambled to play a few last rounds of blackjack before leaving the Atlantic City casinos under orders from governor Chris Christie.

He also ordered residents to leave barrier islands from Sandy Hook to Cape May.

In beachfront towns from North Carolina to New Jersey, the surf was spitting, and crews were rushing to build sand walls in places where the beaches had been rebuilt after 2011, when many places were hit by what was still Hurricane Irene.

In Red Hook, Brooklyn, many residents along the streets closest to New York Harbour were in their basements checking sump pumps.

Gino Vitale, a builder and landlord there, was delivering sandbags piled high in the back of his white Ford pickup truck to tenants along Conover Street, a block from New York Bay.

"We dodged most of it with Irene," he said, referring to the storm that flooded basements in Red Hook but not much else. "I'm hoping we can do that again."

For the most part, residents appeared to follow officials' advice to stock up on bottled water, canned food and flashlights — so much so that stores ran low on batteries. Some gas stations in Connecticut had little gasoline left — no regular, and not much premium.

In a flood-prone neighborhood in Philadelphia, Michael Dornblum did something he did not do during Tropical Storm Irene or earlier storms that brought high water — he put 80-pound sandbags outside his family's furniture store. In the past, he has lined them up only inside. He put the additional protection in place as employees prepared to lift carpets and sofas off the showroom floor. Some went to a storage area on the second floor.

Con Edison did not provide an estimate of how long customers in the New York City area might be without power if the storm played havoc with its network; by contrast, the parent company of Jersey Central Power and Light warned as long ago as Friday that repairs could take 10 days after the storm passed through. Another utility in New Jersey, the Public Service Electric and Gas Company, said that restoring power could take a week.

Forecasters said Hurricane Sandy could deliver something besides wind and rain: snow. That is because a system known as a midlatitude trough — which often causes severe winter storms — was moving across the country from the west. It was expected to draw in Hurricane Sandy, giving it added energy.

A blast of arctic air is expected to sweep down through the Canadian Plains just as the two storms converge. That could lead to several feet of heavy, wet snow in West Virginia and lighter amounts in Pennsylvania and Ohio that could bring down trees and power lines if already chilly temperatures drop below freezing.

The full moon on Monday could cause even greater flooding, because tides will be at their peak.

The possibility of a higher surge was one reason that mayor Michael R Bloomberg of New York ordered mandatory evacuations in low-lying areas, just as he did before Tropical Storm Irene. One city official said there was particular concern about Con Edison's Lower Manhattan infrastructure, noting that if the storm surge washed over the bulkheads, it could damage the utility's electrical and steam networks. If the surge runs as high as forecast, Con Ed will shut off two electrical networks in Lower Manhattan,

As for the subway shutdown, Bloomberg said that if the Metropolitan Transportation Authority had not suspended service, but instead had left itself vulnerable to the storm, the city would have risked being without its mass transit network for even longer.

"They do have to make sure that their equipment doesn't get damaged," Bloomberg said. "Otherwise we would not have subway trains when this is over or buses when it's over."

Joseph J Lhota, the chairman of the authority, said he expected the transit systems to restore at least some service about 12 hours after the storm ended. But he warned that the city could be without mass transit for as many as two full work days. "I do think Monday and Tuesday are going to be difficult days," Lhota said.

But while the mayor said schoolchildren could take Monday off, city workers could not: He said that city offices would be open for business.

Punjab police bowls googly at Harbhajan Singh

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

More than 10 years later when Harbhajan finally did show interest, the Punjab government has confirmed that the offer no longer exists. (AP Photo)

CHANDIGARH: It's a double whammy for Harbhajan Singh. Still reeling under the shock of being demoted from Grade A to B by the Board for Control of Cricket in India ( BCCI), which effectively reduces his fee from Rs 1 crore to 50 lakh per year, Bhajji cannot even fall back on the option of serving the Punjab police.

The 'Turbanator' had recently shown interest in an offer made to him by the Punjab government in February 2002 to join Punjab police as a deputy superintendent of police. At that time chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had showered praises on Bhajji, calling him 'Punjab da puttar', besides giving a cash award of Rs 5 lakh and a residential plot in his home district Jalandhar.

However, at the peak of his form, busy with cricket commitments and flooded with offers from the tinsel world, Bhajji did not respond to the offer in 2002. More than 10 years later when he finally did show interest, the Punjab government has confirmed that the offer no longer exists.

A senior official in the government told TOI, "The deputy chief minister has made adverse remarks on Bhajji's file and the case is almost closed. Bhajji has been busy in the glamour world and preferred not to serve his state."

Times launches Bollywood star-rating index: Kareena, Salman on top

With the destinies of Bollywood's movers and shakers changing every Friday, to assess star ratings is no easy feat. And that's where the Times Celebex powered by zoOm! is going to make a difference.

The rating index is based on several measurable parameters, including the stars' Box Office performance, their ability to stay in the news across print, TV and online; their brand endorsement, and their popularity among fans on the Internet and social media. And all these will be cumulatively taken together to assign them a final rank called the 'T Score'. Times Celebex is a scientific and robust ranking system based on data collected from 200+ publications and 250+ TV channels, making it the first ever ranking system for Bollywood. The September 'T score' is based on the star's performance at the box office over the last two years along with their media visibility during the month of September 2012. While the first rating is based on September 2012 numbers, the next rating will be announced in the first week of January 2013 and will thereafter be a monthly rating.

But, since Talaash is on its way, everyone should watch out.

Yash Chopra’s death was as abrupt as his phone call: SRK

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 27 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

At Yash Chopra's chautha on Thursday evening, Bollywood showed up in full strength. Among those who paid tributes to him were Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher and Karan Johar.

Karan moved all to tears by saying, "Yashji would call me up everyday, just to tell me that he loves me. I still scroll down my contacts to see his name stored. I hope to get a call from that number!" SRK recalled Yashji's phone calls. "He would make abrupt calls and say, 'Main Yash bol raha hoon, tumko milna hai, aa jao'. He would hang up even before you could reply. His death was as abrupt as his phone call. Parathas (that he loved so much) would never be as tasty, women never as gorgeous in chiffon saris, post his death," SRK said.

Anupam Kher recalled Yashji's fondness for food and his bad singing skills. "He would sing any song like a bhajan, but would love singing. We ate together almost thrice a week. We had a common liking for food," Anupam said.

Amitabh Bachchan narrated a few lines from his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan's poetry — "Jo beet gayi so baat gayi... Jo chhoot gaye, phir kahan miley." Bachchan said Yashji would never get angry. "He never raised his voice," he said.

A wheelchair-bound Shashi Kapoor also attended the function along with late Shammi Kapoor's wife Neela Devi and Prem Chopra.

Imran Khan taken off US-bound plane in Toronto

Imran Khan stopped in the US.

TORONTO: Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan was taken off a New York-bound plane here and claimed that he was questioned by American officials about his stance on US drone strikes in Pakistan.

Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf () party, was questioned for about an hour late yesterday before he was allowed to travel by the US officials.

"I was taken off from plane and interrogated by US Immigration in Canada on my views on drones. My stance is known. Drone attacks must stop," Khan tweeted.

"Missed flight and sad to miss the Fundraising lunch in NY but nothing will change my stance. Still looking forward to meet family there," Khan said.

Khan was headed to New York to attend a fundraiser organised by his party's US chapter in Long Island here. Earlier, Khan had intended to hold a demonstration outside the United Nations headquarters in protest of the US drone strikes on his country's soil.

Meanwhile, president of Khan's party in New York Muzammil Anwar told that the rally was cancelled as it coincided with the festival of Eid and several supporters of Khan had cited their inability to participate in the demonstrations due to the Id celebrations on October 26.

Anwar said Khan along with other party activists were taken off an American Airlines plane and questioned by US officials at Toronto's International Airport. On being questioned about his stance on drone strikes, Khan repeated his position that the drone strikes were killing innocents Pakistanis and that they were counterproductive, Anwar said.

Abducted baby found dead in US, NRI held

US: Kidnapped Indian-origin baby Saanvi found dead

US: Kidnapped Indian-origin baby Saanvi found dead

HYDERABAD/GUNTUR: The suspense surrounding the kidnap of 10-month-old Saanvi Venna ended on a tragic note on Friday when police in upper Merion township in Pennsylvania found her body stuffed in a suitcase in King of Prussia, a suburb of Philadelphia. The daughter of software professionals -- Venna Siva Prasad Reddy and Charulatha -- was abducted from her apartment on Monday and her grandmother Satyavathamma, who was babysitting her, was murdered.

The accused, Raghu Yandamuri, was arrested and a murder case slapped against him by the federal police. According to FBI, Raghu, an estranged lover of Charulatha, resorted to the brutal act. Raghu reported to have choked the child immediately after the kidnap and buried the body at an undisclosed area. The FBI exhumed the body with the clues provided by the accused. It is learnt that Raghu had been pestering Latha for several years and insisted her to marry him. Raghu reported to have turned violent after Latha refused his proposal and married Siva Prasad. Raghu is said to be a native of Visakhapatnam and living in the US for over seven years.

Family members residing in Guntur were shocked and broke down soon after hearing about the killing of Saanvi. Prasad's father Konda Reddy lives in Brodipet in Guntur with his daughter. Konda reddy retired as MEO in Prakasam district.

The family members had some hope on the release of the child by the kidnapper after the Telugu associations and locals announced a massive reward of $50,000 for providing clues on the child. Ironically, the family of Siva Prasad delayed cracking the mystery behind the kidnap by not providing clues about the family disputes.

Police said that Raghu had in fact planned to murder Latha on the day of kidnap but abducted the infant as Latha went to office. He, however, killed the infant's grandmother Satyavathamma, when she strongly resisted his moves. Initially, the family members and locals thought that kidnap could have been the handiwork of some Afro-Americans for the sake of ransom. However, FBI teams dug deep into the family disputes angle right from day-one as the abductor did not make any attempt to loot valuables from the house of Siva Prasad Reddy.

Surprisingly, FBI said the accused had been to Venna's home in the Marquis Apartments several times and also lived in the apartment complex, which however was strongly denied by Latha while talking to newsmen.

Police said the accused kidnapped the baby with plans to hold her for ransom, and police found several ransom notes inside the apartment. She said 10 copies of an identical ransom note were found, asking for $50,000. "Apparently he stuffed a handkerchief in Saanvi's mouth to keep her quiet, and she choked to death. Her body was found," a police official said. The grandmother, 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna, died of knife wounds on her neck and chest.

Industry pressurises Ajay to postpone SOS release

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

Yash Chopra's sudden demise (on October 21) has put some Bollywood A-listers in a quandary. A minimum of `500 cr could be at stake, because some of Yashji's well-wishers want some films to be postponed as a mark of respect to the departed industry doyen.

Sources inform us that phone calls have gone to Ajay Devgn, asking him to postpone Son Of Sardaar. It is releasing on November 13, alongside the late filmmaker's Shah Rukh Khan- Katrina Kaif starrer.

Ajay, however, is not in a position to comply with this request, because the film is being co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, while Eros International is its worldwide distributor. Both companies have shareholders to answer to.

One hears from sources close to Ajay that the actor is quite shaken by Yashji's death. Though he has not worked with the veteran, His wife Kajol is very close to Aditya Chopra, having done Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Fanaa with Yashji's company. Ajay apparently did try to talk to the two film corporations representatives asking what would be the best way forward.

Vikram Malhotra of Viacom18 Motion Pictures, said, "The Indian film industry has lost one of its leading lights. Yash Chopra was a pioneering, path-breaking and trendsetting filmmaker on whose films, a nation grew up. We are deeply grieved at this loss to our fraternity. Among various things that the industry has learnt from the great man is supreme respect to work and commitment, as is also evident in the fact that he continued filmmaking virtually till his last day. To honour the same spirit, and to ensure the fulfilment of our commitment to all stakeholders involved in SOS, we will go ahead with the release of the film as originally planned on November 13, 2012. Film production and release is a complex process and release dates are determined months in advance, nearly a year in the case of SOS. In the overall interest of the venture and everyone concerned, it is imperative that we do not deviate from our commitments."

Another serious concern is the fact that if SOS were to even consider pushing their date, others like Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan would also be affected.

Our source says, "If SOS were to get pushed, there will be an appeal asking Aamir Khan to push Talaash from November 30; Akshay Kumar to postpone Khiladi 786 from December 7 and Salman Khan to change Dabangg-2 from its Christmas date, to give SOS a clear 15-day window at the box office.''

Since this will cause major upheaval, the makers of SOS have no choice but to release the film on November 13, its original date.

Indian loses online bid to buy Brazilian student’s virginity

A Japanese man fended off strong competition from an Indian to secure a date with a 20-year-old Brazilian student, who sold her virginity for a $780,000 after putting it up for on-line auction for "charity".

NEW YORK: A Japanese man fended off strong competition from an Indian to secure a date with a 20-year-old Brazilian student, who sold her virginity for a $780,000 after putting it up for online auction for "charity".

Catarina Migliorini, sold her virginity to Natsu who won against a big-spender from India, Rudra Chatterjee and American bidders Jack Miller and Jack Right.

The physical education student — who said she will use the cash to build homes for poverty-stricken families in her home state Santa Catarina— was the subject of 15 bids, the New York Daily News said.

Migliorini's move sparked outrage across the globe as she revealed that she would be followed every step of the way by an Australian crew for a documentary film called 'Virgins Wanted' .

"I saw this as a business. I have the opportunity to travel , to be part of a movie and get a bonus with it," she said.

The intercourse itself will not be filmed. Sex toys will be banned and a condom will be compulsory, with Migliorini saying she is ready to prove to any sceptic that she's a virgin. Natsu will be tested for sexually transmitted diseases prior to the act.

Mallya thanks 'Almighty' for losing billionaire tag, hopes it will lead to 'less jealousy'

Vijay Mallya has slipped out of the billionaire league in the Forbes rich list.

NEW DELHI: Liquor baron Vijay Mallya thanked 'the Almighty' on Friday for losing the billionaire status, and hoped that it would lead to "less jealousy, less frenzy and (less of) wrongful attacks" on him.

Often referred to as 'King of Good Times', Mallya has slipped out of the billionaire league in the Forbes rich list, as "bad times" in his aviation business have dragged down his networth to below the $1 billion mark.

According to the business magazine's latest list of 100 richest people in India that was published on Thursday, Mallya is now ranked 73rd with a fortune of $800 million (about Rs 4,285 crore) -- a sharp plunge from 49th place last year with a fortune of $1.1 billion.

Reacting to the new list, Mallya tweeted this morning: "Thanks to the Almighty that Forbes has removed me from the so called Billionaires list. Less jealousy, less frenzy and wrongful attacks".

Mallya still ranks well above Naresh Goyal of Jet Airways, who has been ranked at the 94th position with a fortune of $600 million.

Cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines, part of Mallya-led UB Group, is going through the turbulent time for several months now and had to halt operations earlier this month.

"King of good times is having nothing but bad times lately. His (Mallya's) Kingfisher Airlines, weighed down by what is believed to be $2 billion in debt, had its license suspended in mid-October after it apparently failed to address Indian regulator's concerns about its ability to operate," Forbes had said on Thursday.

I lost my reputation built over a lifetime, says apologetic Rajat Gupta

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 25 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: A devastated India-born former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta, who was sentenced today for insider trading crimes, said he has lost his reputation built over a lifetime and apologised to his family and colleagues.

Making his first statement since being charged with insider trading over a year ago, Gupta, 63, read from a prepared statement for six minutes before being sentenced by US District Judge Jed Rakoff to two years in prison on securities fraud and conspiracy in federal court here.

"The last 18 months have been the most challenging period of my life since I lost my parents as a teenager. I have lost my reputation that I have built over a lifetime," Gupta said in a tone that did not betray any emotions.

Standing before the judge for his sentencing, Gupta said, "The overwhelming feelings in my heart are of acceptance of what has happened, of gratitude to my family and friends, and of seeking forgiveness from them all. It is with these feelings that I hope to move forward and dedicate myself to the service of others."

Gupta said his conviction on insider trading charges by a jury in June this year was "devastating" to him as well as to his friends and family and added that the implications of the verdict to all aspects of his life -- personal, professional and financial -- have been "profound."

"Much of the first year seemed surreal to me, however, since the trial, I have come to accept the reality of my life going forward. I want to say here that I regret terribly the impact of this matter on my family, my friends and the institutions that are dear to me," Gupta said.

Gupta has been ordered to pay a USD five million fine and would have to surrender in prison on January 8 next year. He will also have to undergo a year of supervised release after his prison term ends.

He had not testified at his trial in June this year and neither had he spoken to the media. Gupta, however, stopped short of taking responsibility for his conviction or admitting his conduct in his statement.

Gupta said during the course of the legal case, he has thought about the institutions and people he had worked with and mentored and feels "terrible" that they had to deal with "undeserved" negative attention.

"I had the privilege of touching many lives in many fields. I mentored many young people, and many more view me as a role model. I served on many boards and many advisory positions with institutions that I hold in the highest regard.

"I have given a lot of thought to them during these last 18 months. These are extraordinary institutions and outstanding people, and I feel terrible that they have been burdened with totally undeserved negative attention. I apologise to them and ask for their forgiveness."

The IIT and Harvard educated Kolkata native said he also often thought about three not-for-profit organisations -- the Indian School of Business, the Public Health Foundation of India, the America India Foundation, which he had helped create.

"These are very young institutions and in the early years of developing a reputation. I love these institutions as if they were my own children. I never want to hurt them in any way.

"Most importantly, I regret terribly any potential damage to their outstanding reputations," Gupta said.

Expressing gratitude for the support his friends have shown him so far, Gupta said he feels responsible for the "sense of loss" they have endured as "a result of what has happened."

Gupta said the events of the last one year have been devastating for his "large, extended close family" and he feels he has let his family down due to his criminal case.

"My family has always meant the world to me. My brother, sisters, in-laws, nephews and nieces have all surrounded me in these 18 months to comfort me and to give me courage. Every time I look at their faces, I get overcome with a deep sense of letting them down."

He said he and his wife Anita, whom he had met at IIT Delhi, have brought up their four daughters with the values of honesty, integrity and hard work.

"It is unbearable to me to see how much they have suffered. I just feel terribly that I have put them through this," he said.

Michael Vaughan blasts India's 'pathetic' tactics for warm-up game

"India to play no spinners against England in the A team warm-up game ... if that's what the game has come to???? Pathetic tactics," Vaughan tweeted. (TOI Photo)

LONDON: The Indian selectors' decision to not include a spinner in the India 'A' team for the three-day warm-up match against the visiting England side has irked former English captain, Michael Vaughan, who described the tactics as "pathetic".

"India to play no spinners against England in the A team warm-up game ... if that's what the game has come to???? Pathetic tactics," Vaughan tweeted.

The former Test cricketer's displeasure came after the BCCI's new selection committee, headed by Sandeep Patil, decided against the inclusion of a spinner in the 'A' team.

Vaughan, in his outburst, said India was redefining the "home advantage" and warned that they were setting up a wrong precedent for other countries.

"I don't think its (sic) in the Spirit of game. Prepare wickets which suit your team (spinning tracks) that should be enough... Poor form!!!

"India's tactics are terrible for the game... It's taking home advantage to a new level... Other teams might follow."

The selectors' move to go ahead with an all pace attack for the November 3-5 duel is reportedly been intended to not provide the visitors with any chance of getting a feel of India's strength.

There has been a lot of talk about utilising the home conditions, and India would definitely not like the Alastair Cook-led side to get a hang of the things to come.

David Llyod, another former England Test cricketer, endorsed the views of his countrymate.

"No spinner in India A team vs England....totally lacking in class and style decision," Llyod tweeted.

England's tussle with the Suresh Raina-led India 'A' team will kick off the visitors' three-month long tour, which includes four Tests and five ODIs, apart from two T20 internationals.

NEW DELHI: Jindal Steel chairman Naveen Jindal on Thursday said his company has made a formal police complaint against Zee News and Zee Business for allegedly demanding Rs 100 crore worth of advertisements in lieu of dropping negative stories.

"We decided not to succumb to the blackmail," said Jindal.

Bidadi gangrape case: Accused thought victims were rich dancers

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 23 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

BANGALORE: The culprits who allegedly gang-raped three women after kidnapping them from their residence in Bidadi last week chose their victims under the mistaken impression that they were cash-flush cabaret dancers, Bangalore rural police said.

The 8-9 gangsters swooped down on the house in Jagajyothi Layout, Kengeri, early Friday with an intention to steal.

"We know you are cabaret dancers and earn lakhs of rupees every day. Hand over all the cash," police quoted one of the gangsters as telling the women. Eight women and four men were staying in the house. One of the women was pregnant, while the others worked as bar girls in a bar and restaurant in Majestic. The men were bouncers assigned for them.

The victims then took some time to disabuse the gangsters of their mistaken notion. The women told them that they were neither cabaret dancers nor live band artistes. "Three of them scoured the house and turned everything upside down. They searched even the kitchen utensils and threw them thinking that money might be stashed in them," one of the women said. The intruders decided to abduct some of the women. Three of them were allegedly sexually assaulted in a house nearby. The five women were released on a road leading back to their house.

An investigating officer said, "They had been watching the movement of the women. We are on the verge of cracking the case."

IANS Oct 22, 2012, 12.11PM IST

"Whenever my loved ones depart, I feel a part of me extinguishes itself with them. Will there come a day that I will no longer have a bit of myself to let go of? And then the thought follows ... that every time they have taken some of me with them onto their last journey, I have found a fragment of them left inside me too.

"I will always have some love to give and I will always be both emptied and replenished by the loved ones I lose. I keep u with me Yashji and I miss u too Yashji ... lots," Shah Rukh posted on his Facebook page.

Questions swirl around source of funding of Gadkari's firm

NEW DELHI/NAGPUR: Grave questions have surfaced over the source of funds for Purti Power and Sugar Ltd, controlled by BJP president Nitin Gadkari. Investigations reveal significant investments and large loans to Purti by a construction firm, Ideal Road Builders (IRB) Group, which had won contracts between 1995 and 1999, when Gadkari was the PWD minister in Maharashtra.

Besides IRB Group, the other significant shareholders in Purti are a clutch of 16 companies. TOI's investigations across four cities revealed that most addresses in which these companies are registered are unverifiable, and that the firms are controlled by Gadkari's close aides.

Records of 2010-11 show that directors of these investor companies included Gadkari's driver, his 'diwan' (accountant) and two employees of Purti. One of them is said to be a friend of his son, Nikhil. The IRB connection is significant. The company and its promoter D P Mhaiskar together subscribed to 68.4 lakh shares of Purti. More importantly, an IRB firm, Global Safety Vision, loaned Rs 164 crore to Gadkari's company. The BJP chief, who is one of the seven promoters of Purti, currently holds just 310 shares worth Rs 3,100.

When Gadkari met TOI in Nagpur on Monday, he denied any wrongdoing. "I am ready to face any inquiry," he said. He added, "I resigned as Purti chairman 14 months ago." TOI had withheld the story for 24 hours as the BJP chief was not available for comment initially.

Global's loan came in a year when Purti had a turnover of Rs 145 crore and accumulated losses of Rs 48.94 crore. IRB Group's contribution in strengthening finances of Purti is noticeable on filings of the company over the years. Also, Global appointed its director Ganesh Gadre on Purti's board as a nominee director. Purti's power and sugar plants and the 47.69-hectare plot — on which the factories are housed — are mortgaged to Global.

In a detailed reaction, Sudhir Dive, managing director of Purti Power and Sugar Limited, denied any irregularity in company's funding from IRB or other sources. "Purti has losses of Rs 64 crore, Mhaiskar loaned us Rs 164 crore through Global, and we have repaid him Rs 62 crore which includes interest," said Dive.

"There's no suspicion around the investment, growth and associations of Purti Power and Sugar Limited," said Dive in a written reply to queries sent by TOI. "All the companies are genuine and are 12-15 years old, they are also complying with all the rules and regulations," he asserted.

However, TOI's investigation shows that most companies that invested in Purti don't exist at the addresses shown in the records of the Registrar of Companies.

For instance, five of the investor companies — Nivita Trades, Swiftsol, Rigma Fintrade, Ashwami Sales and Marketing and Earnwell Traders — are shown as registered at Dube Chawl, a slum in Mumbai's Andheri East.

Ramesh Dube, the owner of the chawl, maintained that no company had ever functioned from the area. "I know of no one who has or currently operates an office in this colony," Dube told TOI.

Three other major holders of the Group — Vidya Buildcon, Sanobar Infrastructure and Roller Multitrade — are registered at an address, Sri Nivas House in Mumbai's Fort Area, which actually belongs to the well-known Somani Group. When TOI visited the premises, members of the Somani family and their employees denied any knowledge of the firms which in official records operate from the same address.

Inquiries revealed that it was actually Pradeep Vyas, a manager of Gujarat Composite Limited, a unit of the Bangar Group that operates from the same building, who had mentioned Somani's premises as that of the Purti investors. Vyas admitted mentioning Somani's premises as the address of Purti investors, saying that he did so at the instance of his chartered accountant friend, Chandrashekhar Sarda. When reached in Kolkata, Sarda said that the companies actually belonged to Kolkata-based investors. "We liaison with them for ROC requirements," Sarda said.

Just like their addresses, the credentials of the directors of Purti's investor companies are also intriguing. TOI inquired about four of the set who were directors in 16 firms that invested in Purti.

Thus, Manohar Panse, who used to be Gadkari's driver, happened to be a director in five of Purti's investor companies. In fact, between 2009 and 2011, Panse was a director in six other companies as well. When contacted, Dive admitted that Panse was Gadkari's driver, but clarified that he is "now a director of only one company." Incidentally, Panse was a key witness in the case where a seven-year-old girl was found dead in a car parked in Gadkari's residential complex in 2009.

Likewise, the address of another director in some of these investor firms, Kawdu Pandurang Zade, is the same as Gadkari's in Nagpur. Zade, known as "Diwan" in the Gadkari household, was a director in 12 holding companies.

Importantly, Dive, who joined Purti as its MD in 2005, was the BJP chief's personal assistant when he was the PWD minister. He continued with Gadkari, serving as his personal secretary when the BJP president became the Leader of Opposition (1999-2004) in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

Apart from the diwan and the driver, the other two directors are Nishant Vijaya Agnihotri and Sagar Shripad Kotwaliwale. Both are employees of Purti, with the latter reportedly a close friend of Gadkari's son. Interestingly, various combinations of two of these four were directors in 16 out of the 21 companies.

Apart from the common set of directors, there is something else that runs through Purti's investor companies as a conspicuous thread. At least 19 of these have registered the same email id with the Registrar of Companies — rajsharma54@yahoo.com. An e-mail sent to the id on Monday evening is yet to elicit a response. Gadkari and Dive said they did not know the identity of Sharma.

The investing companies have now got new directors, but they too are a closed group of people — 11 of them staying in the same locality in Kolkata.

FAMOUS FIVE: The people who have some connections with Nitin Gadkari

Sudhir Wamanrao Dive: MD in Purti Power and Sugar Limited since April 24, 2005. He was a tehsildar in Nagpur district. He came on deputation as the personal assistant of Gadkari during the latter's tenure as PWD minister between 1995 and 1999. Later, he was Gadkari's personal secretary. Dive's younger brother, Dilip Dive, was a BJP candidate in the recent civic elections.

Kawdu Pandurang Zade: Believed to be Gadkari's classmate and from the same village, Dhapewada. Along with Gadkari, Diwe used to run a shop in the ground floor of Gadkari's building. Zade has been living in Gadkari's house for several years. He is named 'Diwanji', which means a person looking after financial matters.

Manohar Madhavrao Panse: Driver of Nitin Gadkari. Now, he looks after all household work. His name featured when Gadkari was in a controversy for when a young girl, Yogita Thakre, was found dead in a Honda CRV belonging to the Gadkari family in 2009. 'Panse-kaka' is as good as a family member.

Nishant Vijay Agnihotri: Works in Purti Power and Sugar Limited and is posted at Purti's head office.

Sagar Shripad Kotwaliwale: Works at Purti Purti's head office since 2006. Rumoured to be a friend and classmate of Gadkaris' son Nikhil. Sagar is also an RSS activist.

Sheila Dikshit sends legal notice to Arvind Kejriwal

Sheila Dikshit sends legal notice to Arvind Kejriwal

NEW DELHI: Activist Arvind Kejriwal was on Monday served with a legal notice by Delhi chief minister's political advisor Pawan Khera for allegedly defaming Sheila Dikshit.

Kejriwal has been asked to tender an "unconditional public apology" for levelling "baseless allegations and aspersions" using "foul and filthy" language.

The notice, which accused Kejriwal of making "derogatory" remarks about the Chief Minister, was sent to the activist by Dikshit's political advisor Pawan Khera.

"Immediately withdraw all the allegations and aspersions made by you against Sheila Dikshit, the Chief Minister of Delhi which has thus defamed my client and the office of Chief Minister of Delhi, in talk shows in at least on three prominent channels and newspapers in equal if not more prominence than the original defamatory content.

"Tender an unconditional public apology to my client to her satisfaction through print and electronic media with regard to the said baseless allegations and aspersions and using foul and filthy language," the notice said.

Kejriwal has been organising protests against power tariff hike in the capital and levelling allegations that the government was in collusion with power discoms.

The notice said the word "dalal" (broker) was used for the Chief Minister in a talk show.

It also asked him to refrain from using any such filthy language unbecoming of civil-public discourse in future.

"In case of failure to comply with this notice within a period of two days of receipt of this legal notice, you shall render yourself jointly and severally liable to face appropriate civil as well as criminal proceedings under the relevant provisions of the law at your risk as to cost and consequences," the notice filed by lawyer Mehmood Pracha said.

Reacting to the legal notice, Kejriwal told a protest here that he will continue doing this till "corrupt practices" are done away with.

"We will continue to defame you till injustice and corruption are done away with," he said.

Face it, teachers cloak in aprons to dodge cams

Preetu Venugopalan Nair, TNN Oct 21, 2012, 03.53AM IST

KOCHI: Managements of several private schools in Kerala want women teachers to adopt a dress code to avoid prying eyes of male students. They have suggested teachers wear an apron or an overcoat "to cover themselves properly" in class.

There isn't a formal diktat but it's the talk of staff rooms after many women teachers noticed students taking pictures of them with mobile cameras.

"We have received many complaints of students clicking photographs of teachers in saris while they write on the blackboard. Most of these images find their way to popular social networking sites,'' said Kerala CBSE School Management Association president T P M Ibrahim Khan.

He admitted the ban on mobiles on campus isn't working. This has forced many schools in the state to ask lady teachers to wear an overcoat or apron on top of their sari or churidhar-kameez. "We also received many complaints that unruly comments about teachers' anatomy appearing as graffiti on toilet walls,'' Khan said. "This decision has been taken only to ensure proper respect for their privacy. We don't want to hurt anyone by implementing this.''

Though Khan is candid in his admission, school managements cite other reasons to justify the apron code. While some managements maintain it is to bring in uniformity in teachers' dressing, others say it is for adding a style quotient. For some others it is for teachers' convenience to "carry chalk and pen''.

"Apart from urban schools, mofussil institutions are also practising this. I personally believe that teachers are role models and need to dress in a decent manner, whether there is a dress code or not," said Kerala CBSE School Management Association general secretary Indira Rajan.

Not all teachers are pleased with the cover-up order. "As teachers we know what to wear. Sometimes senior students, especially boys, are curious, we hear comments, they laugh and make fun of us. But these are fine and have to be tackled in a different way,'' a woman teacher said.

Don't give mobile phones to girls, BSP MP Rajpal Singh Saini says

Don't give mobile phones to girls, it distracts them: BSP MP

Don't give mobile phones to girls, it distracts them: BSP MP

LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Rajya Sabha MP Rajpal Singh Saini has landed in a controversy following his statement, at a public meeting in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh (UP), that woman and children, particularly girls, should not be given mobile phones because it "only invites trouble."

Though Saini blamed the media for twisting his statement after it was aired and drew flak from all quarters, the video footage shows Saini saying that he has been asking people in all his public interactions not to allow girls, women and children use mobile phone. Recently, he said that he had met a father of a girl who was kidnapped. He came to know that the father had given a mobile phone to the girl.

Saini said that he told the father that giving cell phones to girls only invites trouble. The BSP MP said, "I exhort people in every public interaction that our mothers and sisters did not have mobile phones but did they die because of it." Saini said that his own mother, wife, sister and daughter never used cell phones and all were doing well in life. He said that men could allow their mobile phones to be used by children, girls and women in the house in case they need to talk to somebody on an important issue.

A senior BSP leader when contacted refused to comment over the issue and described Saini's statement as his personal view. However, sources in the party said that BSP chief Mayawati was angry after she saw the news and directed senior leaders to ask Saini to take 'corrective measures'.

The statement has invited widespread criticism by several women organisations, members of the National Women Commission and Samajwadi Party (SP).

Later, Saini issued a press release stating that the news channels had shown the edited version of his statement. "I was quoted out of context. I had said that the students upto a certain age should be discouraged from using mobile phones as it distracts them from studies. I am in favour of women and girls carrying cell phones, particularly when they venture out of house for some work, because it helps them to call their family members in case of an emergency," he clarified in the press release.

While Saini did 'damage control' as directed by the party's top brass, the issue is not new in Muzaffarnagar which falls in west UP. The area, despite economic progress, still has a highly patriarchal society and is known for Taliban like diktats issued by Khap panchayats.

In July, a panchayat in Bagpat district had banned love marriages, barred women below 40 years of age from going out for shopping and girls from using mobile phones. The region is also known for honour killings and female foeticide. Major political parties avoid commenting on panchayat diktats.

Sushil Kumar, a social activist, said that politicians in west UP publicly say that they are in favour of freedom for women but in private follow and support the diktats of Khap panchayats. He said that politicians, including those who have studied abroad, do not speak against panchayats and patriarchal traditions as it would lead to electoral losses.
