Industry pressurises Ajay to postpone SOS release

Yash Chopra's sudden demise (on October 21) has put some Bollywood A-listers in a quandary. A minimum of `500 cr could be at stake, because some of Yashji's well-wishers want some films to be postponed as a mark of respect to the departed industry doyen.

Sources inform us that phone calls have gone to Ajay Devgn, asking him to postpone Son Of Sardaar. It is releasing on November 13, alongside the late filmmaker's Shah Rukh Khan- Katrina Kaif starrer.

Ajay, however, is not in a position to comply with this request, because the film is being co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, while Eros International is its worldwide distributor. Both companies have shareholders to answer to.

One hears from sources close to Ajay that the actor is quite shaken by Yashji's death. Though he has not worked with the veteran, His wife Kajol is very close to Aditya Chopra, having done Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Fanaa with Yashji's company. Ajay apparently did try to talk to the two film corporations representatives asking what would be the best way forward.

Vikram Malhotra of Viacom18 Motion Pictures, said, "The Indian film industry has lost one of its leading lights. Yash Chopra was a pioneering, path-breaking and trendsetting filmmaker on whose films, a nation grew up. We are deeply grieved at this loss to our fraternity. Among various things that the industry has learnt from the great man is supreme respect to work and commitment, as is also evident in the fact that he continued filmmaking virtually till his last day. To honour the same spirit, and to ensure the fulfilment of our commitment to all stakeholders involved in SOS, we will go ahead with the release of the film as originally planned on November 13, 2012. Film production and release is a complex process and release dates are determined months in advance, nearly a year in the case of SOS. In the overall interest of the venture and everyone concerned, it is imperative that we do not deviate from our commitments."

Another serious concern is the fact that if SOS were to even consider pushing their date, others like Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan would also be affected.

Our source says, "If SOS were to get pushed, there will be an appeal asking Aamir Khan to push Talaash from November 30; Akshay Kumar to postpone Khiladi 786 from December 7 and Salman Khan to change Dabangg-2 from its Christmas date, to give SOS a clear 15-day window at the box office.''

Since this will cause major upheaval, the makers of SOS have no choice but to release the film on November 13, its original date.
