Narendra Modi needs to be treated in mental hospital: Sharad Pawar

Written By Unknown on Senin, 31 Maret 2014 | 22.14

Jalna (Maharashtra): In a scathing attack, NCP chief Sharad Pawar today said Narendra Modi needs to be "treated in a mental hospital for talking rubbish".

"Modi must have deranged as he talks rubbish things and he is needed to be treated in a mental hospital," the Union agriculture minister said at a rally at Ghanswangi, while campaigning for NCP candidate Vijay Bhamble.

He said Modi does not know about the sacrifices of Congress leaders in the freedom struggle.

"Modi is talking about Congress Mukt Bharat. Whether Modi knows the sacrifice and contribution of Congress in freedom struggle? Because of Congress' ideology, we got freedom," Pawar said.

Attacking Modi for 2002 Gujarat riots, Pawar said, "Members of minority community and Congress ex-MP Ahsan Jaffari were killed in Gulbarga society, which is only 20 km from Ahmedabad where the carnage happened, but Modi neither visited the victims' family nor bothered about them."

He said Modi is "dangerous for the country."

Pawar also said that the BJP's prime ministerial candidate is not bothered about the problems of rain and hailstorm affected people in Maharashtra.

World Twenty20: It's 4 out of 4 as India tick all boxes

DHAKA: There is something about facing Australia in major events that gets Yuvraj Singh excited. The explosive Indian southpaw burst on the scene scoring 84 as an 18-year-old in Nairobi against them in the ICC Knock Out Trophy in 2000.

Scorecard | Super 10 Standings | Match in Pics

He then scored 70 in 38 balls to turn around the semifinal of the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 at the Kingsmead, in Durban, in September 2007. And then, when all seemed lost in the quarterfinal of the 2011 World Cup clash at Motera, he came in and belted 57 not out off 65 balls to take the team through.

On Sunday, at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium, Yuvraj's (60, 43 balls, 5x4, 4x6) familiar foes once again produced the best out of him. India had lost the toss and were put into bat by George Bailey, something they haven't done all through the tournament.

He walked into bat with India at 44 for 2 after the dismissal of India's best batsman, Virat Kohli for 23 and struggled for the first 13 balls in which he scored just six. A four through cover off Doug Bollinger gave him the injection of self-belief.

The quick dismissals of Ajinkya Rahane 19 (16 balls, 2x4), drafted into the side in place of the struggling Shikhar Dhawan, and Suresh Raina too didn't seem to have any effect.

Dhoni arrived at the crease and it must have brought back some happy memories for Yuvraj, who has played some of his finest knocks in limited-overs cricket in the company of the Indian skipper. James Muirhead dropped a couple short in the 14th over and Yuvraj rediscovered the six-hitter in him with two hits into the grandstand at mid-wicket. The prince was back in business.

He proved that with another six off Mitchell Starc over long-off in the 17th over. Watson then bowled a full toss on his legs which Yuvraj whipped into the stand to bring up his fifty.

With two overs to go, India, who were 147 for 4 and had their two best finishers of all time, looked poised for a total in excess of 160, but the wickets of Dhoni and Yuvraj in quick succession, checked their progress and they ended up with 159 for 7. The pair added 84 in 42 balls to provide momentum to the innings.

India looked like they were at least 20 runs short of what was required. But their new-ball bowlers, Mohit Sharma who came into the side in place of Md Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled accurately to put the Aussies under pressure.

The break through was provided by R Ashwin, who dismissed Finch caught by Kohli at mid-off. Kumar dismissed White caught by Jadeja at mid-off for a duck and Mohit Sharma castled Shane Watson for 1.

Maxwell (23 off 12 balls) threatened to unleash carnage by hitting three sixes. However, he attempted a needless reverse hit off Ashwin to be bowled for 23 (12 balls). Warner too fell slogging Ashwin.

Ashwin grabbed 4 for 11 and Mishra continued his good form with 2 for 13. They play Group 1 semifinalist on Friday.

We all know what kind of a player Yuvraj is: Dhoni

DHAKA: After an emphatic victory against Australia, an elated Indian captain MS Dhoni said: "We all know what kind of a player Yuvi is. I think this format suits him (for getting back into form). He decided to give himself time to play himself in. In the middle overs he wasn't able to rotate but in the end overs we knew the firepower we had."

Talking about playing Ajinkya Rahane in place of Shikhar Dhawan, Dhoni said, "Rahane played in a difficult condition. It also gives Shikhar some free time to think about his game so both players will benefit."

On the dew factor, the Indian skipper said, "Today there was no dew at all." He added that the team will rest and then play some soccer to stay fit.

Ravichandran Ashwin is having a great time at the World T20. Having throttled batsmen with his round-the-wicket spin, Ashwin went one better on Sunday and grabbed four scalps to lead India to a ridiculously easy win over Australia.

He was chosen Man of the Match although some thought Yuvraj Singh should have got it for his belligerent innings.

"I thought 160 was just above par. You have to cut the width for the right-hander, the line I'm bowling is not too wide outside off. We were stretched quite a bit while batting but we're playing well the way we are," Ashwin said after the match.

George Bailey, the Australian captain, bemoaned the sloppy performance of his team. "I don't think we've been fans of the way we've been playing -- lack of game sense on a number of occasions. It's not turning more than what you would expect."

Missing Malaysian jetliner: MI6, CIA investigating as fears of terror attack resurface

LONDON: Malaysian authorities have revealed secret services from the UK, the US and China have been involved in the investigations into the disappearance of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, adding to speculation that the plane's disappearance could be down to terrorism.

The MI6, the CIA and Chinese agencies have been looking into the flight simulator found in the home of the flight's Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, though acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the FBI has found nothing sinister in the device.

He said the inspector general of police has highlighted the "four possible scenarios of what could have caused the plane to disappear, which are terrorism, hijacking, personal and psychological problems, or technical failure.

"These scenarios have been discussed at length with different intelligence agencies," he added.

Meanwhile, Chinese relatives of the passengers on board the missing Malaysia airlines flight MH370 have flown to Kuala Lumpur in frustration to try and find answers from authorities, as an American naval officer has said the search could take years.

READ ALSO: Chinese relatives demand apology over missing jet

The relatives claim they have not been given enough new information from authorities dealing with the search, and on Sunday held a press conference in which they held up banners and the Chinese flag, chanting: "We want evidence, truth, dignity."

The group, of which some have accused Malaysian withholding information, held up banners that read: "You must return relatives of MH370, no strings attached".

They have demanded an apology from authorities for its handling of the disaster, and for Prime Minister Najib Razak's earlier statement that suggested the plane had crashed with no survivors.

Two-thirds of the 227 passengers on board the flight that went missing on 8 March were Chinese. Jiang Hui, the relatives' designated representative, said the group felt the decision that there would be no survivors was made without sufficient evidence.

Malaysia's acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein said on Saturday the search for survivors would continue, claiming "we are hoping against hope that we will find survivors".

But a US naval officer on Sunday suggested the search could take years.

US navy Captain Mark Matthews told journalists at Stirling naval base in Perth, Australia: "Right now the search area is basically the size of the Indian Ocean, which would take an untenable amount of time to search."

He added: "If you compare this to the Air France flight 447, we had much better positional information of where that aircraft went into the water." The Air France flight which crashed in 2009 near Brazil was missing for two years before it was found.

Captain Matthews is in charge of the US Towed Pinger Locator (TPL), an unmanned underwater vehicle designed to locate the aircraft's black box, which can trace pings emitted from as deep as 6,000 meters underwater. It has been loaded onto the Australian warship Ocean Shield as it sets off to the search area along with other acoustic detection equipment.

Ships from China and Australia managed to retrieve "objects from the ocean" on Saturday, but none have been "confirmed or related" to flight MH370, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which is overseeing the search.

There are now 10 ships and 10 aircraft searching a massive area in the Indian Ocean to the west of Perth, in a race to find the crucial black box recorder before its batteries are expected to die in the coming days.

The search zone is roughly the size of Poland and it is expected to take Ocean Shield three to four days to travel the 1,150 miles from Perth to reach the designated area.

The black box could hold the key to understanding what happened to the flight when it disappeared three weeks ago. The device consists of two boxes that record vital information; one is a cockpit recorder that stores conversations and other noises from the area, while the other records a stream of flight information.

'Livid' Dhoni offers to quit as CSK skipper, India Cements VP

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Maret 2014 | 22.14

CHENNAI: Under fire for holding positions in conflict with his cricketing roles, MS Dhoni has offered to step down as Chennai Super Kings captain and vice-president of India Cements Limited, it is learnt.

The Team India skipper, currently in Dhaka for the T20 World Cup, is "extremely disappointed and annoyed" that his name has been dragged into the spot-fixing controversy.

He had a discussion with India Cements boss N Srinivasan over phone on Friday morning and requested that his resignation from the VP's post be accepted and that he be relieved from CSK captaincy.

"As of now, it has not been accepted but the two parties are still in discussion and it may happen very soon," a source close to the developments told TOI on Friday.

Harish Salve, the counsel for Bihar cricket association chief Aditya Verma, on Thursday accused Dhoni of giving false statements to the Mudgal committee about the role of Gurunath Meiyappan in Chennai Super Kings.

"Dhoni felt that the recent developments have spoilt his image. That is why he wants to quit from both the posts," the source added.

CSK is the most successful IPL team, winning the title twice and featuring in the final on five occasions. It has also won the T20 Champions League. Dhoni has captained the side since its inception.

"Dhoni is a huge brand and if he quits, CSK's image will take a beating. The way he has led CSK for the last six years is phenomenal and it's very difficult to replace him as captain. The India Cements management is trying its best to ensure that he stays," the source added.

Aamir Khan moves EC as Aam Aadmi Party flaunts him as 'AK No. 2'

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Upset over the use of his pictures for election campaign by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has written to the Election Commission (EC) to clarify that he does not endorse any particular political party. The letter came after Khan learnt of a social media campaign for AAP showing him as supporting the party. "Aamir Khan, from day one, has made it clear that he will not be endorsing a particular political party. He is not supporting or campaigning for any political party," the actor's spokesperson said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Khan's proposed association with the EC as its national icon has been put on hold, with "some issues" keeping him from being signed up in time for the Lok Sabha polls. Though sources in the commission did not spell out the "issues" holding up Aamir's assignment as its fifth national icon - making him join the likes of former President A P J Abdul Kalam, cricketer M S Dhoni, badminton player Saina Nehwal and boxer Mary Kom - they clarified that it had nothing to do with the alleged controversy created by AAP's claims about the actor having batted for the party.

AAP, on its part, clarified that the poster in question was not made by the party's official publicity team. "It could have been made by a supporter of the party. We have not traced the person behind it. We have no intention of using anybody's face for our campaign," said Preeti Sharma Menon, the party's spokesperson. She said the EC has not yet contacted the party on the issue. "The poster in question only shows Arvind Kejriwal, Aamir Khan and Abdul Kalam, with a label that says AK1, 2 and 3. Even if this was made by a supporter, it does not suggest that either Aamir Khan or Abdul Kalam are members of AAP," Menon said.

Chief election commissioner V S Sampat said he would examine the complaint registered by the actor before deciding the course of action. "We have just received the complaint from Mr Khan clarifying that he was not supporting AAP as being portrayed by some of its workers. However, he will continue to encourage voters to cast their votes ethically and in large numbers," he said.

I love Varun and know that he will always be there for me: Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt, 21, considers herself a true Piscean, who is temperamental and moody. She is strong-headed, but emotionally weak when it comes to people close to her. She is impulsive and lives in the moment. While she has the stubbornness of her father, she has got the ability to empathise and adjust from her mother. Over an hour-long conversation ahead of her upcoming film 2 States, she talks to Bombay Times about her dysfunctional family, the sensitive friend Arjun Kapoor and why she loves Varun Dhawan. Excerpts:

How did you become an actress?
Karan Johar was looking for a newcomer and Niranjan Iyengar, who was very close to my sister Pooja Bhatt at one time, had heard about me and mentioned my name to Karan and he decided to meet me. I was five times my size then, but auditioned for SOTY. He asked me to lose weight to do a photo shoot. I lost 14 kgs. I was studying in Class XII at Jamnabai Narsee School and came after school with my mom to meet Karan and was selected for SOTY. Ever since I remember anything about myself, I wanted to be an actor. In Junior KG, I was singing in a choir and my headmistress said, 'Alia, come in the front and sing.' I sang and she said, 'Everybody has to sing like Alia' and I remember loving that attention. Probably, the bug bit me and the dream of becoming an actress just kept becoming stronger and stronger.

Let's talk about your family?
I am most attached to my older sister Shaheen. She is unpretentious and understands me and she doesn't care what other people think and whether I am right or wrong, she will always be on my side. My father is very honest and blunt, but it is always more about him than about you. He has had a lot of experience in his life and is an intelligent person and he knows everything, but he necessarily doesn't know everything about me. Now, since I have started working, there are times when I can confide in him. For instance, on my birthday recently, I remember waking up at 5.30 in the morning and just spending two hours doing nothing. He would tell me that when you can have fun in your own company, you are done, so I messaged him about it and he sent me a reply which was very profound, which I didn't understand. He understands the actor in me. My father tells me and my sister that we are not allowed to get married and go out of his house as recently he had a dream that my sister had to leave the house as she got married. My father would rather lock me up than allow me to date someone. When I was young, I would press his feet as he likes putting cream on his feet. He would give me `500 every time I pressed his feet. He finds me very vain, though, of course, I am much better now. With my mother, I will only be her daughter. My mother is my everything. She holds me together, even though I don't give her enough credit. I am more attached and protective about my mom. I feel like her older sister and she is too sweet sometimes and feel like shouting at her. I also grew up with her as my father was not really there while I was growing up. He was busy and I don't have that many memories of him. I have only one memory of me playing Snakes And Ladders with him. The four of us would never go for a holiday together as he hated holidays. All my holidays were with my mother and sister. He once came to Goa with us for just three days. He was very happy after Highway and did not sleep the whole night after that. For him to say, 'I am proud of you' is a big thing as he will never say it.

Who do you open up to emotionally?
I don't open up emotionally to anyone other than my sister and that also, not fully. I am a very private person. I don't talk to one person about everything as I don't want anybody to know me fully. I am just guarded as a person even with my friends, as I don't like being vulnerable as I have been in the past.

There were many nasty comments on you post SOTY. Did that hurt you?
Of course it did. Firstly, being a star kid you are not loved as they feel it is served easily to you. I didn't expect many accolades as an actor after SOTY, but I didn't even expect so much bashing and people saying, 'Why is she here? Tell her to go home and back to school.' It had been my dream all my life to be an actor and I had had a dream launch and yet there was so much negativity. But I took it in my stride. I was very depressed for a month and lost a lot of my confidence. I was feeling I would be just a one-film wonder. I kept it inside and did not share it even with my family. I wanted to prove to people that I was not here to just be a baby doll, but wanted to make a mark as an actor. I didn't want anyone to know about what I was going through, except I would talk to Varun and my director Abhishek Varman who became close to me. My father can smell me, but I can't come to a point of talking to him about it. Varun was there for me. He would be like a shield and would give me confidence. I would tell him, 'I think I am done. I don't think things will work out.' And he would say, 'Shut up.' And then, Imtiaz Ali happened and his confidence in me gave me confidence in myself. Highway has changed a lot for me.

Are you in a relationship with anyone at the moment?
No. I guess you can see the sadness on my face, right? My first boyfriend was in Class IX, but my only serious affair was when I was 19, post SOTY. I was in love with someone, but I won't confess with who. I have not had a boyfriend for the past year now.

You have been linked to both Varun and Arjun Kapoor. Who do you care for more between the two?
I love Varun. And he is much closer to me than Arjun, even though Arjun too is very close to me.

Let's talk about Varun?
I have known him past three years since SOTY and we became close during promotions. I have a feeling that I know him for a long time. He is very honest with me and I know he won't lie to me. What I love the most about him is that he will always be there for me. He is a very dedicated person and his priorities are correct. He is also always there for his friends and will not change at all and that credit goes to his upbringing. What I don't like about him is that he sometimes disappears on me. You disappear on the world, but not for me. It's not that I expect him to call me five times a day, but I am a very particular friend and am possessive about him.
ALSO READ: Alia Bhatt smooches Arjun Kapoor!
And Arjun?
Arjun is much older to me, so earlier I thought he is this pseudo- intellectual quiet type, till I realised that he is actually fun. I met him the first time at Karan's 40th birthday bash. Initially, during 2 States we would not talk, but then we got on really well. Also, while I had started shooting for 2 States, I went away to shoot Highway and then came back. It was a very weird time for me as I went through a lot emotionally while doing Highway and I would talk to Arjun about it, as he is an intense person and that's when he opened up to me. I found a friend in him. He is a very silent person, but he speaks a lot with his gestures. For instance, when my cat Smokey died, it was weird for me and I know it's not a big thing, but I was in a sad space. He heard about it and called me up. And even though he did not say anything, he heard me crying and just said, 'Don't cry.' He too is a very stubborn person and I feel he needs to take a break.

What is the role of marriage in your life?
Firstly, I am not one of those girls who can get married and sit at home. If I get married, it will only be to have kids as I want to have two babies that I have decided.

Was it tough for you emotionally to accept that your father had two families?
Yes, initially, while growing up, I was never insecure but it has impacted me in a way that I don't want to get married until I want to have babies. When I was growing up, people would make fun of me in school that my father had two wives. For some reason, I was not embarrassed as he was staying in my house. Probably had he not been living with me, it would have affected me in a different way. But I do have this fear of my father and mother not being together. Recently just a few days back, when I was in Chandigarh, I had this dream at night that they have got divorced and it led to me having a bad night. I wasn't happy and got up, uneasy. We are not a normal family. After a very long time we have got close as a family. We don't sit and eat together. We used to never talk to each other and only talk now. I created this family BBM group which has my sister, my mom, my father and me only and my father says, 'I love this group.' We would earlier always be doing our own thing where he would not even know which class I was in. Of course now he wants to know everything about which shoot I am going for the next day and how much money I am getting. We are finally talking to each other. He is not a conventional father. He was always very busy and then he would come back home and watch his news. He would say, 'You should fail and you must get 35%.' He hates teachers and feels they give us bullshit. He never told me how to do it and I just figured it on my own. I am loving being closer to all of them, but I like it only on messages and not face-to-face. Last year when I was shooting in Ahmedabad, my father was there to promote Aashiqui2 and had visited me on the set of 2 States. He recently asks me, 'Are you dating Arjun or what?' Six months later, he is telling me, 'I sensed something in the van when I came to Ahmedabad' even though there is nothing. He likes Arjun. My dad calls me in Chandigarh and tells me, 'Alia, with great difficulty, I say this that suddenly I am being referred to as your father.' He was happy, but also depressed. I started laughing and he laughed as well. And I don't think it is true. I need to push the envelope very much. I am still known as Mahesh Bhatt's daughter. But my objective is for him to be universally known as Alia Bhatt's father.

IAF aircraft C-130J Super Hercules crashes near Gwalior, 5 killed

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Maret 2014 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: A recently acquired C-130J transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed 72 miles west of Gwalior airbase on Friday morning, killing at least five personnel on board.

The IAF has no official word yet on how many personnel were aboard the aircraft.

The crash of the four-engine US made aircraft has baffled experienced pilots, given its safety records and extreme agility. One senior air force pilot said the accident was "bizarre", and speculated that either the crew was incapacitated or a fire broke out aboard the plane.

Rescue operations are underway at the crash site, air force sources said. "The aircraft was airborne from Agra at 10am for a routine flying training mission. A court of inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the cause of the accident," the IAF said in a statement.

The crash took place in Karauli district in Rajasthan, some 72 miles from Gwalior, where it was due to land.

The IAF started inducting C-130J in February 2011 and has half a dozen of them in service. It is also set to induct another six of them.

The C-130J is among the most agile aircraft in service today, and has an impressive safety record. The transport aircraft is meant for an array of operations including movement of Special Forces, and difficult landings. It was highly effective in rescue operations in Uttarakhand after the flash floods, and has proven its capability to carry out landings on remote airstrips close to China border. Both these have exhibited the flexibility and capability of the American aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin.
Starting its history sometime in the 1950s with the US military, C-130 is among the world's most recognizable military aircraft that has participated in numerous military campaigns and in service with several militaries.

Though several C-130s have crashed during Vietnam war, the aircraft is reputed for its reliability. Last time South Asia saw a C-130 crash was when a C-130 aircraft of the Pakistan air force carrying Pakistani dictator General Zia-ul-Haq and the US ambassador Arnold Lewis Raphel were killed when it crashed on August 17, 1988.

Search for lost Malaysian jet shifts significantly after new lead

SYDNEY/PERTH: An international air and sea taskforce hunting for the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 was redirected on Friday to an area 1,100 km (685 miles) north of where they have been searching for more than a week, after Australian authorities received new radar information from Malaysia.

The dramatic shift in the search area, moving it further than the distance between London and Berlin, followed analysis of radar data that showed the missing plane had travelled faster, and so would have run out of fuel quicker, than previously thought.

The new search area is larger, but closer to the Australian west coast city of Perth, allowing aircraft to spend longer on site by shortening travel times. It is also vastly more favourable in terms of the weather as it is out of the deep sea region known as the Roaring 40s for its huge seas and frequent storm-force winds.

"I'm not sure that we'll get perfect weather out there, but it's likely to be better more often than what we've seen in the past," John Young, general manager of the emergency response division of Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), told reporters, adding the previous search site was being abandoned.

"We have moved on from those search areas to the newest credible lead," he said.

For more than a week, ships and surveillance planes have been scouring seas 2,500 km (1,550 miles) southwest of Perth, where satellite images had suggested there could be debris from Flight MH370, which went missing on March 8 with 239 people aboard.

Ten aircraft searching on Friday were immediately re-directed to the new area of 319,000 sq km (123,000 sq miles), roughly the size of Poland, around 1,850 km (1,150 miles) west of Perth. The Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation was also redirecting satellites there, AMSA said.

A flotilla of Australian and Chinese ships would take longer to shift north, however, with the Australian naval ship the HMAS Success not due to arrive until Saturday morning.

The shift was based on analysis of radar data between the South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said.

At that time, the Boeing 777 was making a radical diversion west from its course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

ATSB Chief Commissioner Martin Dolan said radar and satellite polling data had been combined with information about the likely performance of the aircraft, speed and fuel consumption in particular, to arrive at the best assessment of the area in which the aircraft was likely to have entered the water.

An international investigative team continued to analyse the data, Dolan said, which "could result in further refinement of the potential flight path of MH370".

SHIFTING SEARCHES

The latest twist underscores the perplexing and frustrating hunt for evidence in the near three-week search. It comes less than a day after the latest reports of sightings of possible wreckage, captured by Thai and Japanese satellites in roughly the same frigid expanse of sea as earlier images reported by France, Australia and China.

Satellite images had shown suspected debris, including pieces as large as 24 metres (70 ft), within the original search area in the southern Indian Ocean.

Potential debris has also been seen from search aircraft, but none has been picked up or confirmed as the wreckage of Flight MH370, which disappeared from civilian radar screens less than an hour after taking off.

Officials believe someone on board may have shut off the plane's communications systems before flying it thousands of miles off course, where it crashed into the ocean in one of the most isolated and forbidding regions on the planet.

Theories range from a hijacking to sabotage or a possible suicide by one of the pilots, but investigators have not ruled out technical problems.

David Brewster, a visiting fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University, said it was surprising that the new data analysis was just coming to light.

"The Malaysians have never really had to handle a search and rescue operation of this nature before so it is maybe complicated by lack of experience," Brewster said.

"There is no doubt they haven't got their systems working smoothly in terms of sharing within Malaysian organisations or with neighbouring countries."

REINFORCEMENTS

The US Navy said on Friday it was sending a second P8-Poseidon, its most advanced maritime surveillance aircraft, to help in the search.

"It's critical to continue searching for debris so we can reverse-forecast the wind, current and sea state since March 8 to recreate the position where MH370 possibly went into the water," said Commander Tom Moneymaker, a U.S. 7th Fleet oceanographer.

The United States has also sent a device that can be towed behind a ship to pick up faint pings from the plane's black box voice and data recorders, but time is running out.

"We've got to get this initial position right prior to deploying the Towed Pinger Locator since the MH370's black box has a limited battery life and we can't afford to lose time searching in the wrong area," Moneymaker said.

The prolonged and so far fruitless search and investigation have taken a toll, with dozens of distraught relatives of 150 Chinese passengers clashing with police and accusing Malaysia of "delays and deception".

Actor Nagma slaps youth for misbehaving with her at Meerut poll rally

MEERUT: Congress candidate for Meerut Lok Sabha constituency and actress Nagma on Thursday night slapped a man when she was mishandled by a unruly mob at Jali Kothi area during an election campaign meet.

The party workers had a tough time in evacuating her from Jali Kothi, predominantly a Muslim locality. A huge crowd had gathered to see the actress of yesteryear. The moment she arrived, the public went berserk as they jostled to get a glimpse of the celebrity politician.

Within no time, the crowd turned unruly and one of the youths got too close to her. Alarmed, Nagma slapped the youth that led to further chaos.

Nagma who seemed to be disturbed by the incident said, "It was the responsibility of the administration to provide adequate security to me but it seems that under state government's pressure, they (police) take things too lightly. I did not slap anyone but yes, I did try to push them (crowd) away. No way, I could have allowed anyone to misbehave with me."

Jali Kothi area is only at a stone's throw from Sadar police station and yet the quantum of police force was reportedly quite inadequate during the Congress candidate's visit.

Before leaving, Nagma tried to pacify the crowd but her efforts had little effect on them. When the situation went out of control, most of the senior leaders of the Congress including Dr Mairajuddin, Yusuf Qureshi, Ramesh Dhingra left the scene.

Manoj Tyagi, acting president, district Congress committee said, "The administration has shown a very casual attitude towards the protection of Nagma ji who happens to be an actress apart from the only woman candidate from this area. We have met the DIG and the IG in this regard and demanded adequate security for the candidate."

"In addition, we demand the Election Commission to suspend the SSP." However, Salim Bharti, city president, downplayed the incident by stating that she was not manhandled but the situation could have gone out of control. "We had taken prior permission for the meeting and the administration was well aware of it and yet, there were inadequate security arrangements."

Onkar Singh, SSP, Meerut said, "We had provided a gunman to the candidate even before the filing of her nomination and it is incorrect information that there was inadequate security arrangement at the venue. Since she is from the film fraternity, we have also advised her that she needs to take extra precautions. People naturally get excited to see an actor."

Sehwag hits century to guide MCC to a six-wicket win

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Maret 2014 | 22.14

ABU DHABI: India discard Virender Sehwag blasted a 97-ball 109 to lead Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) to a comfortable six-wicket win over Durham in a Champion County Test match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Delhi batsman smashed 18 boundaries and a six in his 97-ball innings to help MCC overhaul the victory target of 225 in 51 overs on the fourth and final day.

Out of the national side for more than a year, Sehwag played a captain's knock as he added 105 runs with Samit Patel (48 not out) of Nottinghamshire for the fourth-wicket.

Sehwag was finally dismissed by Jamie Harrison in the 49th over of MCC's second innings.

Resuming the MCC's second innings at overnight 48/2, Sehwag blasted three fours in the opening over of the first session from seamer Harrison to give his team a good start in the day.

The inexperienced Durham attack failed to tame Sehwag as he completed his half-century in 47 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and then by lunch, he was only five runs short of the three-figure mark.

Sehwag brought up his hundred shortly after the lunch break with a boundary off Harrison. He took 88 balls to reach his century.

Harrison, however, had the last laugh as he had the Indian caught by Paul Coughlin.

Electing to bat, Durham had scored 248 in their first innings but MCC replied strongly with 282. In their second innings, Durham were dismissed for 257, leaving MCC with a target of 224.

MCC finished the third day at 48 for two in 20 overs with Sehwag on nine and DJ Bell-Drummond on 15.

Sunil Gavaskar should take over as BCCI president, SC proposes

NEW DELHI: In a big setback to BCCI president N Srinivasan, the Supreme Court on Thursday proposed his replacement by Sunil Gavaskar and suspension of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) along with Rajasthan Royals (RR) from IPL 7 till the pendency of case of betting and spot fixing scandal before it.

The court said it is intending to bar CSK, owned by India Cements, which is promoted by Srinivasan, and RR, whose players and team officials are allegedly involved in the scandal, from participating in the IPL 7 tournament slated to begin from April 16.

A bench headed by Justice A K Patnaik proposed the name of veteran cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar to head the Board during the pendency of the case in the apex court.

The bench asked the Board to give its response by tomorrow on its proposals after which it will pass an interim order.

The bench also proposed to pass an order barring India Cements officials from getting involved with the functioning of BCCI after senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for Cricket Association of Bihar, pointed out that many such officials are at present part of BCCI team.

Salve also raised questions on the conduct of captain of Indian cricket team, MS Dhoni, who is also vice-president of India Cements, saying that he is guilty of corrupt practices.

At the beginning of the proceedings, BCCI placed before the apex court its proposal and assured that it will initiate disciplinary proceedings against persons concerned on the basis of Supreme Court-appointed Mudgal committee's report.

BCCI, which was rapped on Tuesday by the apex court, came out with the proposal saying that it agrees to conduct proper probe in the IPL betting and spot fixing scandal.

Nargis and I crack dirty jokes: Varun Dhawan

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Maret 2014 | 22.14

While he has his roots in the film industry, she still feels like an outsider, but Varun Dhawan and Nargis Fakhri, co-stars in Main Tera Hero, got along like a house on fire and were at their candid best when they dropped in at the Bombay Times office recently. Excerpts from the conversation:

Varun, which of your co-stars — Nargis Fakhri and Ileana D'Cruz — was more exciting to romance in Main Tera Hero?
Ileana Fakhri. There's something very sexy, lovely and endearing about both of them. When they are together... why not both? There are boys who fall for two girls at the same time and vice versa.

In real life, have you fallen for two girls at the same time?
No, never.

ALSO READ: "I realised how much I love my father after nearly losing him once"

Who are you with currently?
With myself and my driver Manoj, we are together 24/7. We see each other the most, I think I am going to break his marriage.

You recently stated that you would never date an actress. Are you serious about that?
Yes, very serious. I like normal girls. When I come home, I don't want to discuss films; I want to discuss what her world is like and other things. Of course, a normal girl would ask me about my work, but she wouldn't get so much into it unless it's her business.

On the personal front, Nargis, you are being constantly linked to Uday Chopra...
I get linked to everybody and their mothers as well. I was waiting to turn lesbian apparently at some point.

ALSO READ: Varun Dhawan spoofs Ranbir Kapoor's 'Badtameez Dil' in 'Main Tera Hero'

So, what is the equation between the two of you?
My equations with that person? It is just a close friendship. People have made up stuff that I have not even said.

Who took the initiative to begin your friendship?
I met him when I was auditioning for something. I never spoke to him everyday. He is very intelligent and grounded, unlike many people I have met in the industry. It was nice to meet someone who is on the same wavelength. There are not many people who understand you, or want to understand you. With him, I am very honest, speak my truth, tell my life story. For me, it is a blessing to have met him.

Who is the sexiest among the current lot of heroes?
Nargis: It might sound cheesy, but I don't really look at outer beauty.
Varun: She is a santh and a stand-up comic. Nargis: No, that's not true! I look at someone's personality, so that's what I am attracted to. And I haven't spent time with so many people — only the three heroes I worked with.

So, Ranbir Kapoor, John Abraham and Varun Dhawan — whose personality are you most attracted to?
Nargis: I'd be more inclined towards. Varun, personality wise. John will be second, Ranbir will be third. It's about energy, wavelength and things that you have in common. If you ask those guys who their favourite is, maybe I am the last one. They might not like me and find me weird.
Varun: Honestly, she is my favourite person. If I had to ever promote a film with someone, I would choose Nargis because she doesn't crib or nag at all. You know how people sometimes get offended when you say something really true about them, that doesn't happen with her.

So, are you saying Ileana nags?
She doesn't, but compared to Nargis, it is a little more. Ileana is a simpler person. Nargis is way more complex an individual to understand, but when you understand her, she is a child. She is a child in a sexy girl's body.

Varun, do you wear your heart on your sleeve like your character?
No. You have one heart and once you give it away, it's gone. If you wear it on your sleeve, a lot of people are there to take advantage of it. Goodness is something people take advantage of and if you want to remain a good person for long, you should make sure that too many people don't take advantage of you because then you turn bitter. So, a little bit of caution is important.

What is your trademark line in the film?
Main dikhta hoon sweet, innocent swami type ka, but actually main hoon harami type ka. That is the whole character. My character is named after two iconic bowlers — Srinath and Prasad.

What do you like best about each other?
Nargis: He is really easy to work with. He has no ego, he is pretty grounded and the best thing is that he is tuned in to everyone's energy. He can look at you and see if something is wrong, and he will come to you and ask if you are okay and you need anything. I like his work ethic. It is cool to see someone so young being so focussed and ambitious.
Varun: From the first day we met, I felt she is the girl I can say anything to. She understands humour. She is very spiritual. That is the reason perhaps we get along well. We crack dirty jokes and also talk about spirituality. That is the most honest relationship you can have with someone. The values that she lives by is very close to Indian society. I don't think she should go anywhere.

But where is Nargis going?
Varun: She keeps saying that she doesn't know how long she will continue in Bollywood. I feel Indians will get her humour. Her dream was to become a stand-up comedian.
Nargis: That is your dream for me.

So Nargis, can you see yourself settling in India?
My dream is to settle in New Zealand and have a farm. As of now, I consider India my office. I don't think I would build a tent in my office and stay there. For me, the most important person is my mom and she doesn't want to move. I think I wouldn't live here forever.

As compared to Rockstar and Madras Cafe, MTH offers typical Bollywood fare. How different was the experience for you?
Nargis: It was very tough. While doing Rockstar, I didn't know anything, I was just having fun. Madras Cafe was serious, but not as difficult as MTH because it isn't my style of comedy. I wouldn't understand some of the jokes. I think acting retarded would be easy for me. Having a script and the timing was difficult. Dancing and lip-syncing was really tough.
Varun: I think watching Ganesh Acharya teach dance to Nargis is the most joyful feeling.

Is there anything you want to ask each other?
Varun: As an actress, you have the image of being sexy, glamorous, which you are.

Do you ever imagine what boys or men do when they see your pictures? How does it make you feel knowing that you are turning them on?
Nargis: It is a bit creepy to tell you the truth... I never grew up obsessing about anyone, I never had a favourite actor, or favourite food or anything, that is my personality. For me, it is very difficult to understand obsession. A female fan once came screaming and crying, she hugged me and placed her head on my breast. She won't let me go; I wondered what was happening. With that kind of obsession comes fantasy. It is dangerous because fantasy could lead to over obsession with men wanting to actually get closer, leading to stalking and other things. I had a stalker, I had to file a report. It is very scary.

Do you have a crush on any Bollywood actress?
Varun: I saw Queen and I thought Lisa Haydon was really, really sexy. I called her and told her that I had a crush on her on-screen persona.

Missing Malaysian plane: Has Malaysia been keeping information secret? Will they ever stop looking for the plane?

The disappearance of a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 227 passengers and 12 crew aboard, remains shrouded in uncertainty. With wildly differing theories about the loss of the Malaysia Airlines jet, the MH370 mystery is becoming to the early 21st century what the JFK assassination was to the 20th. We look at the key questions — and offer some cautious answers.

Has Malaysia been keeping information secret?

Information has certainly been ineptly managed since the Boeing 777 went missing on 8 March, but I have not seen convincing evidence that it has been deliberately withheld by Malaysia Airlines or the Malaysian government. They have both stressed the need to communicate openly with the relatives of the 239 people on board, but also to verify information before it has been released.

The key accusation that the Malaysians must answer, once the search is completed, is why it failed to act immediately on the key data supplied by Inmarsat about the jet's last hours? The London-based firm told investigators of the vital information three days after the disappearance of the Beijing-bound flight. But it took a further four days before the futile search in the South China Sea was abandoned, and prolonged the unimaginable anguish of the relatives.

How significant is the lack of a distress signal from the pilots, and of evidence of passengers using their mobile phones?

Very significant. Starting on the flight deck: the order of priorities of any pilot is clear: aviate (i.e. keep the aircraft flying), navigate (achieve the desired course and altitude), communicate. If the crew were dealing with a complex and unforeseen problem, they would quite properly focus on the issue rather than contacting the ground or other aircraft. But it appears that a number of manoeuvres were performed that would seem to allow enough time for one or other pilot to broadcast a warning.

If passengers became aware of an unusual or sinister development, it is highly likely that at least some of them would switch on their mobile phones — a few of which would be expected to register on networks while briefly flying over the Malayan peninsula. But the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission reports no such contact. It is possible that passengers were unaware of the change in course, or that they were incapacitated, for example by depressurisation of the cabin.

Once the aircraft was some distance from land, any contact with ground stations would be impossible.

Were the pilots involved?

"Probably a suicidal pilot," says the aviation expert Chris Yates. "I see no other conclusion to draw, other than a vague possibility that a passenger or passengers took control." There has been much speculation about the backgrounds and states of mind of the captain and first officer. However, many other theories have been put forward. Could something as trivial as a spilt cup of coffee on the flight deck can cause an electrical short circuit, which smouldered and produced enough smoke to overcome the pilots before they could broadcast a Mayday? Or could some other event have disabled the communications systems and incapacitated the flight crew?

Has hijacking/terrorism now been discounted?

The suicidal terrorism demonstrated to such deadly effect on 9/11 was aimed at mass murder and targeting iconic structures. Had these been the motives with MH370, then the obvious targets would be the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur — until a decade ago the tallest buildings in the world. Traditional hijacking involves the perpetrator demanding to be flown to a different destination, and does not usually result in the destruction of the aircraft. So unless a macabre new strain of evil has been devised, it is difficult to identify a motive. In addition, no credible claims have been made by any terrorist group for the loss of the jet.

Will they ever give up looking for the aircraft?

Compared with the search for traces of Air France flight 447, which crashed in the Atlantic between Rio and Paris five years ago, looking for MH370 is an order of magnitude more difficult. The distance from the shore is much greater, the sea conditions much heavier and the clues about possible locations much less certain. It is an extraordinarily expensive business. But so much is riding on finding out what happens, that the search is likely to continue indefinitely. The need for some sort of closure for the relatives is clear. But the aviation community is also desperate to learn more — in case there is some previously unidentified issue with the aircraft, and to establish responsibility before the legal process begins.

If they find it, will they raise it?

Search teams will want to recover as much as possible of the debris, to get clues about the aircraft's final moments — and the sequence of events that led to the loss. They will home in on the flight data recorder, which keeps details of commands from the flight deck, and the cockpit voice recorder. The latter, though, may not yield many clues since it has only a two-hour capacity, and therefore cannot reveal what happened over the Gulf of Thailand.

Has bad news about a crash been given by text message previously?

Not as far as I can tell — but there has never been an event like this. With the unexplained loss of a large passenger jet, we are in uncharted territory — or at least territory that has been uncharted for decades. Thankfully air disasters are so rare that "normal" is difficult to define. But in previous events, relatives have tended to learn the worse from the media, rather than the airline.

New satellite images show more than 100 objects that may be from plane, Malaysia says

PERTH/KUALA LUMPUR: New satellite images have revealed more than 100 objects in the southern Indian Ocean that could be debris from a Malaysian jetliner missing for 18 days with 239 people on board, Malaysia's acting transport minister said on Wednesday.

The latest sighting came as searchers stepped up efforts to find some trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, thought to have crashed on March 8 after flying thousands of miles off course.

"It must be emphasized that we cannot tell whether the potential objects are from MH370," Hishammuddin Hussein told a news conference. "Nevertheless, this is another new lead that will help direct the search operation."

The images were captured by France-based Airbus Defence & Space on Monday and showed 122 potential objects in a 400 sq km (155 sq mile) area of ocean, Hishammuddin said. The objects varied in size from one metre to 23 metres (75 ft) in length, he said.

A dozen aircraft from Australia, the United States, New Zealand, China, Japan and South Korea were once more scouring the seas some 2,500 km (1,550 miles) southwest of Perth in the hunt for wreckage on Wednesday, after bad weather the previous day forced the suspension of the search.

"The crash zone is as close to nowhere as it's possible to be but it's closer to Australia than anywhere else," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, before leading the country's parliament in a moment's silence.

"A considerable amount of debris has been sighted in the area where the flight was last recorded. Bad weather and inaccessibility has so far prevented any of it from being recovered. But we are confident that it will be."

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak this week confirmed Flight MH370, which vanished while flying to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.

Citing satellite-data analysis by British company Inmarsat , he said there was no doubt the Boeing 777 came down in one of the most remote places on Earth, an implicit admission that everyone on board had died.

Recovery of wreckage could unlock clues about why and how the plane had diverted so far off course in one of aviation's most puzzling mysteries. Theories range from a hijacking to sabotage or a possible suicide by one of the pilots, but investigators have not ruled out technical problems.

Australia, China and France have all released satellite images over the past week showing possible debris in the same general area as the latest sighting, but no confirmed wreckage has been located.

PASSENGER RELATIVES DISTRAUGHT

An Australian navy ship returned to the area after being driven away by gale force winds and 20-metre (66 ft) waves on Tuesday, while a Chinese icebreaker and three Chinese navy vessels were now in the search zone.

Two Chinese ships were looking for a two-metre floating object spotted earlier in the day by an aircraft, China's state news agency Xinhua reported.

The United States has sent an undersea Navy drone and a high-tech black box detector which will be fitted to an Australian Defence vessel due in Perth in the coming days.

The so-called black boxes - the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder - record what happens during flight, but time is running out to pick up locator beacons that stop about a month after a crash due to limited battery life.

Malaysia said on Tuesday that the U.S. "Towed Pinger Locator" would not arrive in the search area until April 5, which would give it only a few days to find the black box before the beacon battery would be expected to run out.

The prolonged and so far fruitless search and investigation have taken a toll, with dozens of distraught relatives of Chinese passengers clashing with police in Beijing on Tuesday, accusing Malaysia of "delays and deception".

Malaysia's confused initial response to the plane's disappearance and a perception of poor communications have enraged many relatives of the more than 150 Chinese passengers and have strained ties between Beijing and Kuala Lumpur.

Chinese special envoy, Zhang Yesui, met Malaysia's Najib on Wednesday and called for "unremitting efforts" to find the plane, Xinhua said.

MULTINATIONAL INVESTIGATION

Flight MH370 vanished from civilian radar screens less than an hour after taking off and investigators believe someone on the flight may have shut off the plane's communications systems.

Partial military radar tracking showed it turning west and recrossing the Malay Peninsula, apparently under the control of a skilled pilot.

The air crash investigation is shaping up as one of the most costly and difficult ever. Normally, an official investigation can only begin once a crash site has been identified. That would give Malaysia power to coordinate and sift evidence.

A government source told Reuters that Malaysia would lead the investigation, but hoped other countries, especially Australia, would play a major role.

Eggs, ink thrown at Arvind Kejriwal in Varanasi; he says he will defeat Modi

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 25 Maret 2014 | 22.14

VARANASI: AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday vowed to defeat BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi after arriving here amid hostility from Modi supporters that triggered an ink attack.

"I don't see Banaras as a losing battle. I will defeat Modi" in the Lok Sabha election, the former Delhi chief minister told a television channel, shortly after reaching Varanasi by train from New Delhi.

"Fighting against Modi is a small thing," Kejriwal told NDTV. "Saving the country from corruption is a big issue now."

Eggs were thrown at his car outside the Kashi Vishwanath temple, with the protesters steadily raising anti-Kejriwal slogans and asking him to leave the Hindu holy city.

Calling him a "traitor", hundreds of slogan-shouting people blocked his cavalcade while keeping up a steady chant of "Modi! Modi!".

Security personnel had a tough time controlling the crowd. The demonstrators said they wanted only Gujarat chief minister Modi to contest the Lok Sabha battle from Varanasi.

Later, as Kejriwal proceeded towards the rally ground in an open vehicle ringed by hundreds of supporters, ink was thrown at him.

The ink stained his face and clothes and also those of his party leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh.

The man who threw the ink was identified as Ambrish, said to be a member of Hindu Vahini Sena. Police whisked him away. All through the route, many waved black flags and raised anti-AAP slogans.

Earlier, Kejriwal took a dip in the Ganges. His forehead was smeared with sandalwood paste as he came out of the Kashi Vishwanath temple, a Varanasi landmark.

Kejriwal added: "I prayed to God to give me the strength to fight and save the country."

The Aam Aadmi Party leader is set to address a public rally at which he is expected to seek support for taking on Modi, the BJP nominee here.

Kejriwal supporters in hundreds have been campaigning for him for days in Varanasi.

Vaibhav Maheshwari, who handles the media for the AAP in Uttar Pradesh, earlier told IANS that the Kejriwal-Modi contest would not be symbolic. He said its outcome would be "stunning".

Kejriwal, who founded the AAP in November 2012, led the party to a dramatic debut in Delhi in December 2013 by winning 28 of the 70 seats, and then formed a minority government that lasted 49 days.

Mystery of Flight MH370 'may never be solved'

KUALA LUMPUR: Even if searchers are able to miraculously pluck Malaysia Airlines flight 370's "black box" from the depths of the vast Indian Ocean, experts say it may not solve one of aviation's greatest mysteries.

Planes, ships and state-of-the-art tracking equipment are hunting for any trace of the passenger jet, which Malaysia said crashed in the forbidding waters after veering far from its intended course.

They face a huge challenge locating the Boeing 777's "black box", which holds vital clues to determining what caused the plane to vanish after it took off from Kuala Lumpur en route to Beijing on March 8.

But experts believe the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder may not yield answers on the riddle of how and why the plane diverted an hour into the flight, and embarked on a baffling journey to the southern reaches of the Indian Ocean.

The data recorder details the aircraft's path and other mechanical information for the flight's duration, and "should provide a wealth of information", US-based aviation consultancy firm Leeham Co said in a commentary.

But the cockpit voice recorder, which could reveal what decisions were made by those at the helm and why, retains only the last two hours of conversations before the plane's demise.

That means potentially crucial exchanges surrounding the initial diversion, which took place halfway between Malaysia and Vietnam, will be lost.

"Clearly, it won't reveal anything that happened over the Gulf of Thailand, this will have been overwritten by the end of MH370," it said.

Leeham added that it also remains to be seen whether the cockpit recorder will contain anything pertinent about the plane's final two hours, when it is believed to have either ditched or run out of fuel.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Monday that Flight MH370 had gone down in the Indian Ocean with its 239 passengers and crew, citing new satellite data analysis.

But its exact location and the circumstances of its diversion remain a mystery. No distress signal was ever received.

Three scenarios have gained particular traction: hijacking, pilot sabotage, or a sudden mid-air crisis that incapacitated flight crew and left the plane to fly on auto-pilot for several hours until it ran out of fuel.

Malaysia has said it believes the plane was deliberately diverted by someone on board.

But with the travelling public and aviation industry hanging on every twist in the drama, no firm evidence has emerged from a Malaysian investigation to support any of the theories circulating.

British aviation expert Chris Yates said that even if the black boxes are found, "it seems unlikely that we will get that answer" of why the plane ended up thousands of kilometres off course.

"We still have no idea as to the mental state of the pilot and co-pilot, we have no idea if somebody managed to get into the cockpit to seize the aircraft, and we've certainly had no admissions of responsibility since this whole episode started," he told BBC television.

"It is a mystery like no other"

Debris has been sighted far off Australia's west coast but an international search effort has been unable to retrieve any for confirmation, and wreckage could have drifted hundreds of kilometres from where the plane crashed.

"As investigators, we deal with physical evidence and right now we don't have any physical evidence to work with," Anthony Brickhouse, a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators, told AFP.

The batteries powering the locator signal of the black boxes will run out in less than two weeks.

A US device capable of detecting that signal even on the ocean floor was being sent to the scene, but weather and treacherous sea conditions have hampered the effort to pinpoint the black box location.

Paul Yap, an aviation lecturer at Singapore's Temasek Polytechnic, said that if the black box is not found, "chances are we are never going to find out what really happened".

"With the new satellite data, I think we can say it is a chessboard," he said of the wide search area.

"The question now is to find which grid on that chessboard to focus on, where the black boxes are."

Deepika Singh to marry her show’s director

Written By Unknown on Senin, 24 Maret 2014 | 22.14

TV actress Deepika Singh is all set to wed her show's director Rohit Raj Goyal, who she met when she was finally picked for the role she became known for. Deepika confirms, "Rohit and I are getting married in the first week of May in Mumbai. It will be a love-cum-arranged marriage."

When she joined the show, she was a complete newcomer while Rohit had been directing serials for quite a while by then. The two grew close over the last year after her sister's marriage.

READ: Deepika Singh is punctuality queen

She shares, "We both belong to Delhi and have similar cultural and traditional backgrounds. We believe in the idea that a relationship is for keeps and that there is nothing to hide about a relationship. My parents met him at my sister's wedding and liked him a lot. His family liked me as well and our families thought we'd be a good match. And when I made plans to go on a holiday alone in May, Rohit asked me if instead of a holiday, we should get married and I agreed."

Deepika recalls how she fell for her director. "When I first met him on the set, I used to be quite vocal about my thoughts and being from Delhi, I'd be quite moohfat in my thoughts with him, have cute fights with him and was never afraid of him. Missing Malaysian plane: Chinese plane spots 'mysterious object' in Indian Ocean

PERTH (Australia): A Chinese plane crew spotted a white, square-shaped object in an area identified by satellite imagery as containing possible debris from the missing Malaysian airliner MH370, China's media said on Monday, while the United States prepared to move a specialized device that can locate black boxes into the region.

The crew aboard an IL-76 plane sighted the object in the southern Indian Ocean search area on Monday and reported the coordinates to the Australian command center, which is coordinating the multinational search, as well as the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon, which is en route to the area, Xinhua News Agency reported.

No further details were immediately given. Satellite images from Australia and China had earlier identified possible debris in the area that may be linked to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 on March 8 with 239 people aboard.

The US Pacific command said it was sending a black box locator in case a debris field is located. The Towed Pinger Locator, which is pulled behind a vessel at slow speeds, has highly sensitive listening capability so that if the wreck site is located, it can hear the black box pinger down to a depth of about 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), Cmdr. Chris Budde, a US Seventh Fleet operations officer, said in a statement.

"This movement is simply a prudent effort to preposition equipment and trained personnel closer to the search area so that if debris is found we will be able to respond as quickly as possible since the battery life of the black box's pinger is limited," Budde said.

There was no sign the move was because of any break in the mystery of the plane that went missing March 8 with 239 people on board, but rather as a preparation.

The Chinese plane was one of two Ilyushins that joined the search Monday from Perth, increasing the number of aircraft to 10 from eight a day earlier.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority's rescue coordination center said the weather in the area, about 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) southwest of Perth, was expected to deteriorate with rain likely.

Australian transport minister Warren Truss said "nothing of note" was found Sunday, which he described as a "fruitless day."

"It's going to be a challenge, but we'll stick at it," he told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio before the first aircraft left Perth at dawn. "We're just, I guess, clutching at whatever little piece of information comes along to try and find a place where we might be able to concentrate the efforts."

A cyclone bearing down on the Australian northwest coast "could stir up less favorable weather," he said.

Flight 370 while en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, setting off a multinational search that has turned up no confirmed pieces and nothing conclusive on what happened to the jet.

The latest French satellite data came to light on Sunday as Australian authorities coordinating the search sent planes and a ship to try to locate a wooden pallet that appeared to be surrounded by straps of different lengths and colors.

The French data came after Australian and Chinese satellites earlier identified suspect objects.

The pallet was spotted on Saturday from a search plane, but the spotters were unable to take photos of it.

Wooden pallets are most commonly used by ships but are also used airplane cargo holds, and an official with Malaysia Airlines said Sunday night that the flight was, in fact, carrying wooden pallets. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with company policy.

In Paris, French foreign ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said in an interview with The Associated Press that the satellite radar echoes "identified some debris that could be from the Malaysian Airlines plane."

The spokesman said that these echoes "are not images with a definition like a photograph, but they do allow us to identify the nature of an object and to localize it."

Gathering satellite echo data involves sending a beam of energy to the Earth and then analyzing it when it bounces back, according to Joseph Bermudez Jr., chief analytics officer at AllSource Analysis, a commercial satellite intelligence firm.

Satellite radar echoes can be converted into an image that would look similar to a black-and-white photo, though not as clear, he said. "You'd have to know what you're looking at," Bermudez said.

A Malaysian official involved in the search said the French data located objects about 930 kilometers (575 miles) north of the spots where the objects in the images released by Australia and China were located.

One of the objects located was estimated to be about the same size as an object captured Tuesday by the Chinese satellite that appeared to be 22 meters (72 feet) by 13 meters (43 feet), said the official, who declined to be identified because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.

US underwater wreck hunter David Mearns on Monday described the French satellite sighting of potential debris as a "positive development," although he was unaware of the full details.

Mearns was an adviser to British and French search authorities following the loss of Air France Flight 447 in the Atlantic Ocean during a flight from Brazil to Paris in 2009.

He warned that time was running out to find confirmed wreckage that could lead searchers back to the aircraft's black box.

The southern Indian Ocean is thought to be a potential area to find the jet because Malaysian authorities have said pings sent by the Boeing 777-200 for several hours after it disappeared indicated that the plane ended up in one of two huge arcs: a northern corridor stretching from Malaysia to Central Asia, or a southern corridor that stretches toward Antarctica.

Malaysian authorities have not ruled out any possible explanation for what happened to the jet, but have said the evidence so far suggests it was deliberately turned back across Malaysia to the Strait of Malacca, with its communications systems disabled. They are unsure what happened next.

Authorities are considering the possibilities of hijacking, sabotage, terrorism or issues related to the mental health of the pilots or someone else on board.

In the US, Tony Blinken, President Barack Obama's deputy national security adviser, said on CNN: "There is no prevailing theory."

"Publicly or privately, we don't know," he said. "We're chasing down every theory."

Army running low on ammunition

NEW DELHI: The world's second-largest standing Army is fast running out of ammunition. Tanks and air defence units, artillery batteries and infantry soldiers are all facing the crunch. The Army is, obviously, tight-lipped on the ammunition shortage. But a simple calculation reveals that at present, it may not have enough ammunition reserves to sustain a full-fledged war for even 20 days.

The norm is that war wastage reserves (WWR) should be adequate for 40 days of intense fighting, with 21 days earmarked for ammunition with shorter shelf-life. But according to a recent statement by Army chief General Bikram Singh, if there is proper budgetary support for the new ammunition roadmap, the Army should have 50 per cent WWR and three years of training ammunition by 2015.

In other words, the Army is at not even 50 per cent WWR right now, which means it does not have adequate reserves to fight a war for even 20 days. It is expected to reach 100 per cent WWR only by 2019.

With the huge shortages adversely impacting both operational readiness and training, the 1.18-million strong Indian Army is desperate that the new government which takes charge in May actively supports its new ammunition roadmap of around Rs 19,250 crore, both in terms of fund allocations and timelines.

This becomes all the more crucial since the Army has kick-started the raising of the new XVII Mountain Strike Corps, which will come into full force with over 90,000 soldiers over the next seven years, to add some much-needed teeth to its deterrence posture against China. This alone will see the raising of 32 new infantry battalions, apart from armoured, artillery and air defence units.

The Army already has 13 corps, which includes the three "strike" ones headquartered at Mathura (I Corps), Ambala (II Corps) and Bhopal (XXI Corps). They add up to 382 infantry battalions, 281 artillery, 63 armoured, 44 mechanized and 56 air defence regiments, apart from other support arms like signals, engineers, ordnance and the like.

Plans didn't take off

On one hand, almost none of its critical modernization projects for new howitzers, helicopters, anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) or air defence guns have materialized till now. On the other, operational hollowness or "critical" deficiencies in ammunition and fuses for existing weapon systems have built up over the last decade.

"There is a glaring mismatch between operational and training requirements vis-a-vis budget allocations, imports and the inadequate production capacity of our 39 ordnance factories," said a senior officer.

The Army holds ammunition, which is costly and also has shelf-life, at three levels. The "first line" of operational and training ammunition is held at the battalion level in the shape of "on weapon and unit reserves", while the "second line" is with higher formations like brigades and divisions.

Finally, there is the WWR, held in a dispersed manner.

With defence minister AK Antony sanctioning the roadmap, the next government will have to take it forward.

I am in a relationship with Saachi Kumar and will marry her: Bilal Amrohi

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 23 Maret 2014 | 22.14

Bilal Amrohi, 30, is the grandson of Kamal Amrohi, the great director who directed cult classics Pakeezah and Taj Mahal. Naughty and affectionate, he prides himself in being the favourite of his three mothers — his tayee Mrs Shandar Amrohi, his own mother Niloufer Amrohi and Alvira Agnihotri. Ahead of his debut film O Teri, he talks to Bombay Times about his hero Salman Khan, his mentor Atul Agnihotri and why he will marry Kumar Gaurav's daughter, Saachi. Excerpts:

Why did you choose to be an actor? I am born, bred and brought up in Mumbai and have all through been a Bandra boy. My grandfather Kamal Amrohi directed and produced movies and owned the Kamalistan Studio. He had two sons, the older Shandar (who died three years back) and my father Tajdar. I have three very protective mothers — one, my own mother Niloufer Amrohi, second my taya Shandar Amrohi's wife, who raised me, and the third, Baby Ma (Alvira Agnihotri). My taya didn't have children and so his wife took care of me. That is why I am a little more spoilt than usual. I went to Learners Academy, Bandra, but was very naughty in school and was horrible in studies. Ranveer Singh was a year junior to me and while now we are buddies, in school we had a major fight. He too was very naughty. I was initially a year senior to him, but failed in Class VIII when suddenly I found myself in his class. I was a little bit of a sweet kamina type. The tension had anyways always been building up between us as I was his senior, but being in the same class it got worse. So we had a proper mukka mukki and had a go at each other. Of course, we finally got tired of hitting each other and hugged each other finally. I dropped out of school after Class X and first assisted JP Dutta in LOC after which I started assisting Atul bhai (Atul Agnihotri) and have been with him ever since.

I look at Atul bhai's place as my playground and do whatever work is given to me. He is a father figure and guide to me and we have this great camaraderie and rapport, and I love him. I sometimes call him just Atul or even Papa. I always wanted to be an actor. My dad also directed a film Ek Number Ka Chor, where my older brother debuted as a child artiste. I remember going on the set and watching everyone giving so much attention to the actor that I had decided that I too wanted to be one.

How did O Teri happen? I partied so much that I would just be partying every night till I eventually got fed up of it and was totally done with it at 21. I have known Varun Dhawan and Ranveer since I was a kid and had seen everyone come into films. I was 25 when Atul bhai said, 'I want you to now look at acting', which is when I went to LA to study acting. When I came back, our families were holidaying together in Dubai when I told Atul bhai, 'I am ready' and he decided to make O Teri.

You are debuting at 30. Did you lose confidence? I remember the first day of acting school in LA. They switched on the camera and said, 'Speak anything you wish to for two minutes, you can even speak lies, but speak.' That was the first time I was standing in front of the camera. And all I managed to say was, 'I am Bilal Amrohi from India.' I thought to myself whether it was too late and whether my confidence had been broken, as just before going to LA I had already started feeling that it was too late and started questioning whether I could become an actor at all. I am still shy and like to be around people I trust.

Do you have a hero you look up to? Only Salman Khan. I got my navel pierced as he got his pierced during Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. I started working out because of him. I have grown up watching Salman, Arbaaz, Sohail and Atul bhai. My mom ties rakhi to Salman bhai. The person I love the most is Atul bhai. While I was assisting him, he would come and pick me up as if he was taking me to school. Atul bhai has always been very protective towards me. He is always very calm and composed. When he loves you, he spoils you and I love that.

Who do you love the most in the world? My mother. I have been very close to her. When I failed, everyone judged me except for my mom and my nani. My nani was not educated, but she would say, 'Chhodo chhodo bahut lambi zindagi hai.'

Despite your family disputes, you are so close to your father's older brother's wife. We lived in the same house till I was 21 and my amma (Shandar Amrohi's wife) raised me. Even when my dad and taya were in a legal battle, he was completely fine with me going to his brother's house and calling his wife amma. My taya too would love me. I meet her almost every single day even today and she is very loving. She is old-fashioned like my nani, who will feed me with her hands and will always say, 'Baba kamzor ho gaya hai.' My own mother is very secure. I have kind of segregated my mothers — Mrs Shandar Amrohi (my amma and tayee) is the one who brought me up and I become a baby in front of her. My mom is someone I am not afraid to make mistakes in front of, she loves me unconditionally and I know that she will not judge me. And with Baby Ma, she is as right as it comes. I listen to her. I am also very secure when Atul bhai is around me. I think I am a little bit of a baby and don't mind being that way.

Are you in a relationship currently? My first girlfriend was at 13. Past four years, I am in a relationship with Saachi Kumar (Kumar Gaurav's daughter). Saachi is into fashion designing and is very good at that. She is lovely and very supportive. She likes the fact that I am a bit of a brat. But she knows that I may seem a little brattish, but I am really not and I will marry her.

What are you like? I have so many moods. I have learnt to control my anger by doing kickboxing and yoga. But I know I will never lie to hurt somebody. Innocent lies is okay. I am stubborn and I want things very fast. I get very anxious and hyper. I am honest. My mother knows that I will not put on a garb of lies and everything is black-and-white about me. I think that is what all my women like about me. I want to make my family proud of me. But for now, I am just happy that the family I grew up with is where I am debuting as an actor.

Pallet, belts sighting boosts search for Malaysia Airlines MH370

PERTH, Australia: The first visual sighting of objects that might be linked to Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 boosted search operations on Sunday for the missing airliner that mysteriously disappeared more than two weeks ago.

Australian officials said a wooden cargo pallet, along with belts or straps, was spotted on Saturday in a remote stretch of the southern Indian Ocean that has become the focus of an intense international search in recent days.

"It's still too early to be definite," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters during a visit to Papua New Guinea.

"But obviously we have now had a number of very credible leads and there is increasing hope — no more than hope, no more than hope — that we might be on the road to discovering what did happen to this ill-fated aircraft."

The possible breakthrough came on the same day fresh Chinese satellite images emerged showing a large floating object in the same inhospitable region around 2,500 kilometres (1,500 miles) southwest of Perth.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) confirmed it was the "first visual sighting" since Australian, New Zealand and US spotter planes began scouring the area on Thursday.

"Part of the description was a wooden pallet and a number of other items which were nondescript around it and some belts of some different colours," AMSA aircraft operations coordinator Mike Barton said.

Wooden pallets are quite common in aircraft and ship cargo holds.

The objects were spotted by observers on one of the civilian aircraft taking part in the search.

An air force P3 Orion aircraft with specialist electro-optic observation equipment was diverted to the same location, but only reported sighting clumps of seaweed.

"That's the nature of it," Barton said. "You only have to be off by a few hundred metres in a fast-travelling aircraft."

Sunday's search, involving four military and four civilian aircraft, would return to the area to try and zero in on the objects again, he added.

More ships, planes

China has dispatched seven ships to the hunt for the plane, adding to British and Australian naval assets involved.

"Obviously the more aircraft we have, the more ships we have, the more confident we are of recovering whatever material is down there," Abbott said.

If the plane did crash in the ocean, investigators are hoping to identify the impact site before the plane's black box stops emitting tracking signals — usually after 30 days.

The flight recorder will be crucial in solving the mystery of what caused the Boeing 777 with 239 passengers and crew aboard to suddenly veer off course over the South China Sea en route to Beijing.

Satellite and military radar data suggest the plane backtracked over the Malaysian peninsula and then flew on — possibly for hours — either north into South and Central Asia, or south over the Indian Ocean.

The question of what happened on board has become a topic of unbridled speculation, with Malaysian investigators standing by their assessment that the plane was deliberately diverted by someone on it.

Three scenarios have gained particular traction: hijacking, pilot sabotage, and a sudden mid-air crisis that incapacitated the flight crew and left the plane to fly on auto-pilot for several hours until it ran out of fuel and crashed.

A 'humanitarian' exercise

The long, largely fruitless search for the aircraft has been especially agonising for the relatives of the 227 passengers — two thirds of whom were Chinese — and 12 crew.

Their grief and frustration boiled over Saturday at a hotel in Beijing when police had to restrain angry family members confronting Malaysian officials they accused of withholding information.

Although the plane's disappearance is already the subject of a criminal investigation, Abbott stressed that the search was essentially a "humanitarian" exercise.

"We owe it to the almost 240 people on board the plane, we owe it to their grieving families, we owe it to the governments of the countries concerned, to do everything we can to discover as much as we can about the fate of MH370," he said.

The latest Chinese satellite images showed an object measuring 22.5 metres by 13 metres (74 by 43 feet).

Abbott said it was "consistent" with one of the objects identified in satellite images released by Australia on Thursday, but it was not clear if they were believed to be the same.

"Hope we find something today," Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said in a text message to AFP.

How did Sonia Gandhi become so rich? Maneka Gandhi asks

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 22 Maret 2014 | 22.14

BAREILLY: If Congress workers and loyalists, still warm in their hearts after Varun Gandhi recently said he will utter no word against cousin Rahul, thought the bro-code would extend from the Gandhi sons to the bahus, they were in for a sharp surprise.

Moments before filing her nomination from Pilibhit on Friday, where she shifted for this election from Aonla, BJP candidate Maneka Gandhi had launched a blistering attack on sister-in-law Sonia and asked how a woman who had "brought nothing in dowry at the time of her marriage went on to become the sixth richest, according to some media reports in the West, woman in the world".

Accusing the UPA chairperson of indulging in large scale corruption, Maneka while addressing a public meeting on Thursday evening in Puranpur tehsil, under the Pilibhit parliamentary constituency, said, "Congress president jab videsh se shaadi hokar aayi thi to yahan ki janata ne unhe itna pyar aur dulaar diya. Lekin aaj videshi media ke anusaar woh duniya ki chathi amir mahila hain. Aakhir kaise?" (When she came to India as a newly-wed, Sonia Gandhi was showered with love and affection by the people of this country. But now, as per claims of the western media, she is the sixth richest woman in the world. How?)

Not stopping at that, Maneka asked, "Shaadi ke samay dahej mein kuch bhi saath nahi laayi thi, tab phir itna paisa kahan se aaya. Yeh hamari zindagi, hamare bahchon ke bhawishya se aaya hai. Jo paisa unke liye road, school , bijli ke liye tha, usi ko le liya." (She, Sonia, had brought nothing as dowry, so where did all this money come from? Perhaps by gobbling funds meant for schools, roads, power projects, and by robbing the future of our children.)

The barbs did not end there. Maneka went on to accuse the UPA government of financial bungling, which she said was "100 times more than that during the time of British rulers".

Recalling the tribulations of those who took part in the freedom struggle, she said, "They faced police brutalities and braved lathis, bullets. But the UPA government in its 10-year rule has broken all records in terms of looting and plundering the country, even out-pacing the Britishers."

As news of Maneka's vitriol spread, unhappy Congress leaders pounced on her. Congress candidate from Pilibhit Sanjay Kapoor said, "It is very unfortunate to hear such statements from a person of Maneka Gandhi's stature. She is talking about dahej in this age where it is considered a punishable offence. Soniaji stands out as an apostle of sacrifice who turned down the post of prime minister despite having the support of more than 300 MPs. On the other hand, both Maneka and her son Varun, have always indulged in divisive politics pitting Hindus against Muslims."

Flight MH370: China spots new possible plane debris in southern Indian Ocean

KUALA LUMPUR/PERTH: Chinese satellites have spotted a new object in the southern Indian Ocean that could be wreckage from a missing Malaysian airliner carrying 239 people, and ships are on their way to investigate, China and Malaysia said on Saturday.

The object, around 22 metres long (74ft) and 13 metres (43ft) wide, was spotted early on March 18 around 120 km (75 miles) from a location where possible debris was sighted by another satellite on March 16 in the remote ocean off western Australia, China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND) said on its website.

The Chinese sighting was first revealed by Malaysia's defence minister and acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who was handed a note with details during a news conference in Kuala Lumpur.

"Chinese ships have been dispatched to the area," Hishammuddin said.

China said an image of the object had been captured by its high-definition earth observation satellite "Gaofen-1". The location was south by west of the possible debris announced by Australia on Thursday, SASTIND said.

The latest possible lead in the hunt for the jetliner comes two weeks after it disappeared from civilian radar screens less than an hour after taking-off from the Malaysian capital on a scheduled flight to Beijing.

Searches by more than two dozen countries have so far turned up little but frustration and fresh questions about Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

REMOTE SEAS

The international search for the plane has in recent days focused on the southern Indian Ocean far off Australia's western coast after satellite images captured floating objects that investigators believed could be parts of an aircraft.

Six aircraft and two merchant ships have been scouring the area, but there were no reports of any wreckage being found.

Australia, which announced the first satellite image and is coordinating the rescue, has cautioned the objects might be a lost shipping container or other debris and may have since sunk.

"Even though this is not a definite lead, it is probably more solid than any other lead around the world and that is why so much effort and interest is being put into this search," Deputy PM Warren Truss told reporters, before latest Chinese report.

According to several people familiar with the matter, India has told Malaysian investigators that it had found no evidence the plane flew through its airspace, making the satellite debris lead more solid.

It was the first formal notification that India had come up empty-handed after checking its radar records, the sources said.

China, Japan and India were sending more planes and Australian and Chinese navy vessels were also steaming towards the southern zone, more than 2,000 km (1,200 miles) southwest of Perth.

Weather conditions were good, with 10 km (6 miles) of visibility, according to officials — a crucial boost for a search that is relying more on human eyes than the technical wizardry of the most advanced aircraft in the world.

I AM NOT GOING TO GIVE UP

Aircraft and ships have also renewed the search in the Andaman Sea between India and Thailand, going over areas in the northern corridor that have already been exhaustively swept to find some clue to unlock one of the biggest mysteries in modern aviation.

The Pentagon said it was considering a request from Malaysia for sonar equipment. The P-8 and P-3 spy planes, which the United States is already deploying in the search, also carry "sonobuoys" that are dropped into the sea and use sonar signals to search the waters below.

Investigators suspect the Boeing 777 was deliberately diverted thousands of miles from its scheduled path. They say they are focusing on hijacking or sabotage but have not ruled out technical problems.

The search itself has strained ties between China and Malaysia, with Beijing repeatedly leaning on the Southeast Asian nation to step up its hunt and do a better job at looking after the relatives of the Chinese passengers.

For families of the passengers, the process has proved to be an emotionally wrenching battle to elicit information.

In a statement on Saturday, relatives in Beijing lambasted a Malaysian delegation for "concealing the truth" and "making fools" out of the families after they said they left a meeting without answering all their questions.

"This kind of conduct neglects the lives of all the passengers, shows contempt for all their families, and even more, tramples on the dignity of Chinese people and the Chinese government," they said.

Some experts have argued that the reluctance to share sensitive radar data and capabilities in a region fraught with suspicion amid China's military rise and territorial disputes may have hampered the search.
