Amid hectic campaigning for the Delhi assembly elections, BJP's chief ministerial candidate, Kiran Bedi, tells Sagarika Ghose that she is a team builder who takes responsibility and that her good work will make news now. And, if she loses the election, she will go back to speaking engagements at Oxford and Harvard.

Q: How does it feel to be on your first campaign trail?

A: It's a whole new life but for a very high cause. Its my dream my vision now to connect Delhi with the government of India so it doesn't get left behind. It will be disastrous if Delhi goes back to dharnas and agitations.

Q: Has it been a challenge to make the transition from activist to politician?

It was tough choice. I was a manager and master of my time. Now am not. Its others time which I have to work with. Now I make plans according to what my constituency needs or for road shows. Sometimes its planned by the office. Am not a master of my time at the moment. But I will be a master of my time once the campaign is over.

Q: You've been critical of politicians, now you are a politician?

A: Am still not a politician. Am still learning to be a politician, am not a full politician. Am in political administration through political route. Earlier I was in public administration through the route of the IPS, now am in politics through the national political party called BJP.

Q: So you're not a full time politician?

A: I didn't say that.

Q: The AAP says this is a battle between Imaandar (them) vs afsarvaad (you)

A: That's the charge they make against all. They don't leave out anybody. What is larger meaning of honesty? Honesty is in word and deed, honesty is not just financial.

Q: Your ex colleague former top cop Julio Rebeiro has written an article saying you like to be the sole boss. You are not a team player?

A: Nothing in my life has been achieved by being a sole boss. Police reform was achieved by me only? It was on 3 C model: collective corrective community based. I have not done anything in isolation. Am a team builder. I empower people and align people but I take responsibility.

Q: Rebeiro says you like being the centre of attention?

A: Am in the centre of accountability if accountability brings attention so be it. When am a leader leader should give the vision, knows the way shows the way and goes the way.

Q: Your vision for Delhi?

A: Delhi has to be clean. We've never focused on swachta. If we could bring a Shramdaan concept, everyone in it together we could start the process of reversal as it has already

Q: Tell us a bit about your 6 Ps concept...

A: Women's security has to have a holistic approach. Begin with families: parents. How is a women respected at home, how to the Principles teach, how do the pradhans lead. So parents, principles and pradhans that's one P, for People. Then Politicians what does he say or do, then comes Police are they doing community policing. I am a master of community policing. At the time I was doing there was no TV coverage, so next generation doesn't know. Next, fast track Prosecution, fifth Prison reform, last media, or Press. I've said if I win a monthly dil ki baat will be done by the CM with citizens of the city with me saying what has been done on various issues, here's the lekha jokha on womens security, here's the new policy.

Q: If you had to give one message on how to deal with gender discrimination?

A: By being equal, competent, self reliant. Self reliance is our thing. My sports background plays a vital role here.

Q: Aren't you only popular among the middle class? What's your vision for Delhi's slum colonies?

A: My work in slums for 26 years is unparalled by a public servant. I've worked in the slums of Bawana, Yamuna pushta jhuggis, in unauthorised colonies in Kalaram Majri, in 70 villages in Haryana, we empowered women, educated 1000s of children, but it does not make news. But now it will make news. Now it will! Now my good work will make news

Q: But how will you counter AAP's offer of free water and electricity?

A: You give everything free, you will have empty coffers. Anything given free has no value. Given at reasonable affordable price lends value to everything you give. For instance, in my school for the poorest, we don't keep it free. We charge five rupees fee and so parents send their children. When its free they don't come. Never make a precious product which is for larger consumption free, keep it at an reasonably affordable price but to have it at an affordable price you have to have it in abundance, so demand matches supply whether its water or electricity. That's why Delhi must connect with the central government because the central government will give money, power water. Kejriwal's promises of borrow and spend will run Delhi into bankruptcy.

BJP president Amit Shah and party's Delhi chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi.

Q: And your vision for infrastructure?

A: Last mile connectivity is what I want. I have already met Nitin Gadkari and Venkaiah Naidu. Last mile connectivity was my dream in Asian Games 1982. I told the government at that time, give me ring railway buses and give me one pass.

Q: Is statehood the answer for Delhi?

A: I would like to look at that. Its part of the BJP manifesto. But its not an obstacle. CM and LG should work together. CM has a large civil defence force. Its scattered, frittered, not utilised. So while I have to work with the police, I also have to recover my own force, the civil defence and the home guards. They are for disaster management, they are also for social defence.

Q: As a woman are you facing problems in politics and are you encountering resistance in the Delhi BJP?

A: No. For me it's a progression from my activism. I don't see resistance. I see great support. I read things in newspaper for which there's no basis, is amazing how stories are created. They said I and another person have a difference of opinion, but we have not met for 7 days.

Q: So you have no issues with the party?

A: The party is solidly behind me. All want Delhi to connect with the government of India. Otherwise Delhi will suffer dharnas agitations negative headlines again.

Q: How did you react to US President Barack Obama's views that India divided on religious lines can't progress? Many have seen it as a criticism of the BJP.

A: I'm a total humanist. I went to a convent school and college. One side of my family is from a mixed Sikh background, the other half is Hindu. In my neighbourhood I had many Muslim friends. When I wrote the IPS, for me my religion was humanity. I practise humanity.

Q: But what about those in BJP who support love jihad ghar wapsi?

A: Those are hopeless useless words. Nothing is banned. You can go wapas a hundred times. Today I can decide to be a Christian, tomorrow a Muslim, third day I can be a Hindu or a Sikh or a Buddhist or an atheist. Its my choice. Freedom of religion is my choice.

Q: But some people in your party believe strongly in ghar wapsi.

A: What you say is hopelessly wrong. Ghar wapsi or not wapsi or dubaraa wapsi is your freedom of religion as long as it is not compelled and there is no complaint. If I want to change my religion, its my right, and if somebody is facilitating it, that's within the law.

Q: How is your relationship with Anna? He doesn't speak to you or Arvind.

A: Anna Hazare doesn't believe in the political party system or in political parties. I disagree with him. I don't think you can elect only independents. My relationship with him remains inspite of our disagreement.

Q: What if you lose the election?

A: I've a lot of speaking engagements on hold from Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge or Columbia. All are on hold. So while remaining a member of the BJP I will go back to my speaking engagements and go back with my trust to Nav Jyoti and India Vision Foundation which are my children which I had to resign from.
