Anurag Kashyap might go to jail?

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 31 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

Vickey Lalwani, Mumbai Mirror Aug 30, 2013, 12.00AM IST

(Anurag Kashyap More Pics)

It seems there is more trouble in store for 'Bombay Velvet'. First it was the film's budget that shot up by Rs 23 crore, thanks to the sinking INR and now the director has landed in legal tangles with the Service Tax Department. Anurag Kashyap will now have to leave the Sri Lanka shoot and fly down to Mumbai on September 3. With the director away, the shooting schedule, which was supposed to go on till November end, might suffer a setback and the film's budget can further shoot up too.

A team of officials from the Service Tax Department went to Kashyap's Yari Road office on August 26 and carried out a detailed investigation between 2 pm and 10.30 pm.

A source close to the development told TOI, "He is guilty of Service Tax evasion to the tune of Rs 55 lakh. He should have paid this amount last year. Discrepancies have been noted in his private accounts."

Based on the irregularities found, the director was summoned to appear before the Service Tax Commission, which is headed by R Shekhar, on August 27. However, Kashyap sent his representative instead. On August 28 his bank accounts were frozen. According to sources, he has now asked time till September 3.

Deputy Commissioner of Service Tax Department, SameerWankhede, who also visited the office for a brief supervision, said, "Yes, a case has been booked against Anurag. We are carrying out further investigations."

Explaining how a filmmaker can flout Service Tax, the source explained, "There can be many ways he can cheat. For one, he can sell the film to a studio /corporate, charge Service Tax from them, and not pay the same to the government. It is a very serious offence."

A Service Tax official (on request of anonymity) said, "Section 89 of the Finance Act says that if you have not paid your service tax to the tune of Rs 50 lakh for a period of six months, the defaulter can face imprisonment for a period of seven years and it is a nonbailable offence. As of now, we have detected that Anurag has defaulted on over Rs 50 lakh. Probe is on. "

Anurag remained unavailable for comment.

How Yasin Bhatkal managed to slip away every time

Mateen Hafeez & Deeptiman Tiwary, TNN Aug 30, 2013, 07.02AM IST

(For someone who claimed…)

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Yasin Bhatkal must be the only terrorist to have played such a long hide-and-seek game with Indian agencies despite being in the country all along.

Unlike most top terrorists, who invariably melted into Pakistan or West Asia after terror strikes or after their names cropped up on agency radars, Bhatkal chose to stay back and conducted blast after blast for five years despite every agency trailing him.

For someone who claimed to be an engineer, he shook off agencies by staying off phones and used modern means of communication sparingly. Sources in the security establishment doggedly tracking Bhatkal for years, say he seldom made calls. When he did, he used public booths. On rare occasions when he used cellphones, the numbers were obtained on fake identities. Worse, the phones weren't used for too long.

Most of his important communications were through chat services like Nimbuzz and Yahoo. "These he used sparinglyâ€"only when an operation had to be put in motion and instructions given. He believed in meeting people personally and discussing plans. He moved with a core group that acted together and personally planted bombs," an officer tracking him said.

Security agencies tracked several of his calls, mostly after he stopped using the number. Many of his chats were flagged, but by the time agencies cut through the red tape to seek information from foreign servers, Bhatkal had not only moved to a new thread online but also to a new location physically.

"This explains why we came close to nabbing him several times but failed. Whenever he used mobiles, conversations were brief and snappy. By the time we tracked the chatter, he had moved on," the officer said.

It explains how Yasin remained holed up in a Darbhanga village for more than a year before conducting the 2011 Mumbai blasts. He planned the conspiracy at the village, testing bombs in a mango orchard and test-firing guns, but no one ever got to know.

Once he was nabbed in Kolkata but walked free pretending to be the son of a businessman. In November 2011, IB learnt he was at the house of suspected IM operative, Abdur Rehmand at Selaiyur, Chennai. The IB team reached half an hour too late. Check points at railway and bus stations were in vain. In October 2008, he escaped when Karnataka Police delayed a raid on a hideout near Kopa in Chikamagalur after raids on IM operatives in Mangalore.

In December 2011, he gave the slip to Delhi police special cell and Maharashtra ATS when they laid a trap outside Mumbai's Habib Apartment thinking he would return. He saw more than 100 plain clothes cops outside the building and never returned.

Dollar power gets elderly NRI doctor 152 wannabe brides

AHMEDABAD: This can turn young grooms green with envy! At 68, a US-based doctor has an option to choose a bride from not less than 152 women, some as young as 21 years, speaking volumes about the rising value of the greenback!

Dr Raman Shah (name changed), a practicing physician in New York, was flooded with proposals after he put out a matrimonial ad. Dr Shah had remained single after an Amdavadi woman he was in love with refused to move with him to the US. He had also lost his parents and two brothers some years ago.

A month ago, Dr Shah approached the Ahmedabad-based NGO that runs a matrimonial service for the elderly."Dr Shah needed a life partner as he couldn't bear the loneliness anymore. We put out an ad saying that a 68-year-old doctor residing in New York needs a bride who is willing to shift to the US. There is no age, caste or religion bar,"said the co-ordinator of the NGO.

And, the response not only surprised the NGO but Dr Shah too. "We had expected around 25-30 responses that too from women aged above 45 or 50 years. But there is a mad rush to marry him. There are 152 women who are keen to marry him and shift to the US," said the coordinator.

The wannabe brides include a 21-year-old Muslim girl from Surat and a Hindu girl from Ahmedabad of the same age.

Surprisingly, a 35-year-old woman from Ahmedabad is even ready to dump her husband if Dr Shah selects her. "Also, there are a few who want a live-in relationship with him," he said.

Dr Shah is planning to come to Ahmedabad in November to tie the knot.

Why America cannot live without wars

Chidanand Rajghatta, TNN Aug 29, 2013, 05.45AM IST

(On a day marking the 50th…)

WASHINGTON: On a day marking the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I-Have-A-Dream" civil rights speech, the United States is poised to unleash another nightmare some 10,000km away in the Middle-East. Washington's war machine is geared up for limited strikes against Syria because Damascus ostensibly crossed a red line by using chemical weapons against its own population, never mind that many regimes worldwide inflict atrocities against their own people by other means.

Why a President who came to office on the strength of his anti-war credentials - especially on the phony war foisted on Iraq - is running with the war hounds, is something of a mystery. But the rest of the Washington establishment is champing at the bit to unleash missiles on the Syrian regime, promising a short punitive strike, in keeping with the well-worn belief that America cannot live without a war.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was among those who indicated that the US was "ready to go" the moment President Barack Obama gave the sign. "We have moved assets in place to be able to fulfill and comply with whatever option the president wishes to take," Hagel said on Tuesday.

This, when a UN team is still investigating the reported use of chemical weapons in the conflict between the regime of Bashir al Assad and the rebels. The UN team has been asked to pack up and get out of the way. "We clearly value the UN's work - we've said that from the beginning - when it comes to investigating chemical weapons in Syria. But we've reached a point now where we believe too much time has passed for the investigation to be credible and that it's clear the security situation isn't safe for the team in Syria," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Tuesday, echoing the kind of impatience that characterized the descent into the Iraq war.

Despite the appalling intelligence failures during previous such conflicts, US officials placed immense faith in their own findings while scoffing at international efforts. "I think the intelligence will conclude that it wasn't the rebels who used it and there'll probably be pretty good intelligence to show that the Syria government was responsible," Hagel said in a BBC interview. The prospect of the war, even a limited strike, upsetting a range of friends and allies, from Israel to India, does not seem to be holding back Washington's war veterans (both Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel served in the military).

If all this recalls the war against Iraq not too long ago, not many in Washington seem keen on remembering it. Instead, explanations are being proffered on how different this case is and how it will be a short, surgical strike, not really a war.

But America's discerning have long recognized that the country can never live without war. It is a country made for war. Small detail: Up until 1947, the Defense Department was called Department of War.

By one count, the United States has fought some 70 wars since its birth 234 years ago; at least 10 of them major conflicts. "We like war... we are good at it!" the great, insightful comedian George Carlin said some two decades ago, during the first Gulf War. "We are not good at anything else anymore... can't build a decent car or a television, can't give good education to the kids or health care to the old, but we can bomb the shit of out any country..."

Similar sentiments have been echoed more recently. "America's economy is a war economy. Not a manufacturing economy. Not an agricultural economy. Nor a service economy. Not even a consumer economy," business pundit Paul Farrell wrote during this Iraq War. "Deep inside we love war. We want war. Need it. Relish it. Thrive on war. War is in our genes, deep in our DNA. War excites our economic brain. War drives our entrepreneurial spirit. War thrills the American soul. Oh just admit it, we have a love affair with war."

And so, America will be off to another (limited) war shortly.

Indian marathon man Somdev Devvarman wins after eight hours

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman needed five sets over eight hours between rain delays and a determined foe, but he reached the second round of the US Open on Wednesday with a clutch late performance.

The 28-year-old former US college star defeated Slovakia's Lukas Lacko 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in three hours and 11 minutes of match time, although rain halted the match for more than four hours after he won the third set.

"Bummer for me, momentum switch," Devvarman said. "But you have to pull your pants up and deal with it. Just the nature of the beast."

Devvarman made 36 unforced errors, fewer than half of Lacko's 73 such mistakes, and hung tough at the finish

"When you are playing in the fifth set, a lot of it is you play with adrenaline at that point. I know both of us were dying at the end," Devvarman said.

"I was pretty antsy and he was too. The nervous energy affected the both of us. We were just trying to do our best."

Devvarman had just battled back to secure the third set when showers began to fall, sending him into the locker room. After a tease of returning quicker, more rain left him to sit and the marathon wait continue.

"I got two quarters of a meal at different times," Devvarman said. "You just take a shower, eat and try to relax. You are in there with a bunch of your friends, playing games and the time passes pretty quickly."

So did his momentum. "Stopping and starting, it was a little unlucky to stop there," he said. "You can't control the weather. It changed the momentum. He came out and played well, changed his tactics. He played a great fourth and fifth sets."

But at 4-4 in the final set, Devvarman came through with a break and held to book a second-round date with Italian 20th seed Andreas Seppi.

"I'm very happy with the way I played. It was an incredibly tough match," Devvarman said. "I played a few great scramble points there in the fifth set at 4-4. I'm happy with that last bit of effort out there."

Devvarman said having to fight through three qualifying matches has been an advantage.

"Less time on the court is better but you do what you can to take advantage of what you have," Devvarman said. "I'm familiar with the speed of the courts. I've played a lot of matches.

"I'm match sharp. I hope I can take advantage of that in the next match. The only way I can improve is to fight through every match and I feel like I've done that."

Country faced with difficult economic situation, Manmohan Singh says

NEW DELHI: With falling rupee and rising oil prices casting a shadow over Indian economy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said the country is faced with a difficult economic situation for which some domestic factors too were responsible.

"It cannot be denied that the country is faced with a difficult economic situation," Singh said after leader of the opposition Arun Jaitley sought his response on the rupee hitting a life-time low.

"There are several causes (for the economic woes). I do not deny some domestic factors too are responsible," he said.

Listing some of the external factors that have impacted rupee and Indian economy, Singh said US monetary stance and problems created by tensions in Syria and its "inevitable consequences on oil prices" have played their role.

"We have to reckon with these uncertainties," he said, adding he needed "sometime to reflect" on these.

"I would be happy to make a statement tomorrow," the Prime Minister said.

Earlier, when the House met for the day, Jaitley raised the issue of depleting value of the rupee, which has fallen 20 per cent against the US dollar this year and already breached 68 mark.

He said there was "panic" in the country as people don't know where the devaluation of the rupee will stop.

Inflationary pressure will be twice as rising food prices will be coupled with imported inflation in form of rising oil prices in the international market, he said.

Manufacturing growth has been low while services sector has seen expansion drop to 7 per cent from 10 per cent earlier. "In situation like this, what is that government is going to do," he asked.

Jaitley said finance minister P Chidambaram's 10-point plan is economic theory as everyone knows that fiscal deficit and current account deficit have to be cut and exports have to be increased.

With economic growth rate falling and inflation ruling high, the country was headed towards stagflation.

Stagflation, a portmanteau of stagnation and inflation, is a term used in economics to describe a situation where an inflation rate is high, the economic growth rate slows down, and unemployment remains steadily high.

The present situation, he said, had arisen because economic prudence has been made subservient to populism.

While crude oil and edible oil are essential imports, $20 billion was spent on importing coal despite the country having coal reserves in excess of demand.

"It is a panic situation ... we want to know from Prime Minister what Prime Minister has in his mind for reviving the situation. In a democracy, the buck stops at the Prime Minister and not disappear," he said. "Prime Minister must take the House and the country into confidence."

Sitaram Yechury (CPM) wanted to know if after 22 years of reforms under Manmohan Singh, the country has come back to square one.
Parties attack government over sliding rupee in Lok Sabha

Political parties slammed the government in the Lok Sabha over the sliding rupee, which has breached the Rs 68 to a US dollar mark, and demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh make a statement on the issue.

When the House met for the day, leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj sought Speaker Meira Kumar's permission to speak during question hour on the continuous fall in the value of the rupee.

"Day before yesterday there was a debate in the House on the state of the economy in which the finance minister gave a long speech enumerating 10 steps and maintained that if these are implemented the economy will improve. After this the confidence of the country and the investors should have increased by at least 10-20 paise but it has actually fallen," Swaraj said.

"The country's reputation is attached to the rupee ... We want a statement from the Prime Minister, who is a renowned economist. Those having PhDs in economics are not able to handle the economy," she said, adding the PM should clarify whether the rupee slide will stop or it will continue to fall.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav held the government responsible for the slide in the rupee. He said some fall in the rupee over a period of time is understandable but it has continuously gone down.

"This is due to the wrong policies of the government. The budget of this year was also against the policies," he said, adding that in 1991, India had to pledge gold and today the world is eyeing India's gold again.

Sougat Roy (TMC), who had given notice for an adjournment motion to discuss the devaluation of the rupee, said the "drastic fall in the rupee's value is causing concern at the national and the international level".

Satyagraha

Story: As corruption erupts, what's the best satyagraha - to preach or practice?

Review: There's a shot in Satyagraha - a rainbow glimmering for a second between jets of water pounding protestors - which typifies this film. Vibrantly layered, Satyagraha weaves together urban legends of corruption, encompassing corporate lobbyists to murdered engineers. It features slices of histories, Chauri Chaura, Mandal, Anna Hazare's Jan Lokpal Andolan. It takes a real issue - corruption - to reel life, movingly fusing fact with fiction, leading to a security guard accompanying a politico at its screening to sing out aloud, "Aam aadmi kitna aam, Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram..."

Retired teacher Dwarka Anand (Bachchan) is an idealistic man. His engineer son Akhilesh's buddy Manav (Devgn) is an ambitious capitalist. Manav cherishes his friend - who suddenly dies. Minister Balram Singh (Bajpai) announces compensation which Akhilesh's wife Sumitra (Rao) cannot get despite daily applications before government babus. Incensed, Dwarka slaps an arrogant official and gets imprisoned. Manav starts a campaign to free him, using social media, roping in wannabe-bahubali Arjun Singh (Rampal) and journalist Yasmin (Kapoor). As hopeful students, hungry labourers and angry middle class citizens join, politicians panic. Will their moves derail the movement?

Devgn is Satyagraha's strong body while Amitabh - gaunt in grief, moving in fortitude - is its soul. And Bajpai is its glittering, malevolent cloak, delivering a satiny performance hair-raising in its perfection. Bachchan voices the movie's philosophy - "Janta sarkaar ki malik hai. Malik nirdesh deta hai. Maang nahin karta." But what is the best way to give such nirdesh? Symbolic protest? Violent revolt? Or a longer, harder route?

Satyagraha grapples with this dilemma. More philosophical than fiery, it adorns reality with gloss and loss. Dwarka touching the earth where his son fell brings tears while Prasoon Joshi's wonderful lyrics - "Uthkar karne hain kuch kaam, Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram" - bring hope.

Satyagraha deserves an extra half-star for capturing corruption from root to branch - a government babu complains, "Yahan toh table ka bhi bhaada dena padta hai". Showing true Satyagraha has no short-cuts, it also shows solutions glimmering ahead, as ephemeral, yet powerful as a rainbow cleansing the dust.

Note: You may not like this movie if you avoid socio-political realities in cinema.

Rupee tumbles to record low; sensex closes 28 points higher

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 28 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

The rupee's free fall continued on Wednesday with the opposition slamming the government.

TNN | Aug 28, 2013, 04.19PM IST
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: With the rupee plunging to new record lows and the markets down, the government said on Wednesday global factors were to blame for the turbulence.

Speaking to Times Now, commerce minister Anand Sharma said there was no reason for panic.

Challenges are there but our macro fundamentals are strong, Anand Sharma said.

There are some signs of recovery across the globe and that gives us hope that things will also improve in India, he said.

The minister's observation came as the rupee plunged to a new record low of 68.75 per dollar in the late morning trade on Wednesday on persistent dollar demand from banks and importers due to further fall in equity market amid rise in crude oil prices.

The sensex which plunged nearly 500 points during the day, recovered the loses.

It ended in the green, 28 points up at 17,996.15

.

Earlier, the rupee resumed lower at 66.90 per dollar as against the last closing level of 66.24 per dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) Market and dropped further to an all-time low of 68.75 per dollar at 10.45am.

Persistent capital outflows by foreign funds also affected the rupee value against the dollar, a forex dealer said. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 1,373.99 crore on Tuesday as per the provisional data from stock exchanges.

Oil prices rose in Asian trade today on concerns over possible US military action against Syria after Washington warned President Bashar al-Assad's regime that it would face action over an alleged chemical weapons attack. New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for delivery in October, was up 57 cents to $106.49 in mid-morning trade.

TV actress fights bag snatchers as gutless crowd watches

A television actor and her friend bravely fought off three men who assaulted them and snatched their purse as a crowd of about 10 to 15 people stood by and watched at a busy Oshiwara junction on Monday night.

The incident, which happened at 8.45 pm at a bustling traffic light on Linking Road behind Mega Mall, comes just five days after the gang rape of a 22-year-old in a central Mumbai mill compound put the spotlight on the safety of women in the city.

As the women fended off the assailants, who were slapping and kicking them, a passing police patrolling party saw the incident and arrested two of the muggers while the third managed to get away.

Loveleen Harinderpal Singh Sasan, 23, whose screen name is Loveleen Kaur, was going to the Lokhandwala market in an autorickshaw with her friend Mimin Chaudhary, 24, a banking professional. When the auto was at the Patliputra Nagar signal, a man snatched Kaur's purse, causing her to fall out of the auto.

As the thief was running away, the two women raised an alarm and started chasing him. But when the women caught up with the snatcher near Vijay Vishal building, two of his accomplices joined him and started hitting the women. As Kaur and her friend were fighting the thieves, a crowd gathered, but nobody helped them.

"The three of them started slapping and kicking us," Kaur said in her statement to the police. "But I did not let them go. I had only Rs 1,200 in the purse, but the amount did not matter. I just did not want the accused to get away with this. There were about 15 people around us. But all of them were merely watching. Nobody came to help us."

When TOI contacted Kaur and her friend, they declined to comment for this report. Kaur plays Rano in the serial Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai which is airing on Life Ok channel. She has acted Bade Ache lagte Hai and Anamika on Sony in the past.

"Our marshals saw that a crowd was holding up the traffic on the road," said Nasir Pathan, senior inspector, Oshiwara police.

"First they thought it was an accident. But when they went closer, they saw the two women fighting off three men and shouting 'Chor! Chor!' Their first instinct was to catch the three men, but one of them managed to slip away. We were surprised that the crowd was just watching. Luckily, our constables reached in time and nabbed the accused."

Filmmaker Ashok Pandit, who witnessed the incident and tried to fend off the thugs till the police arrived, said it was "ridiculous to see the crowd just standing and watching who will win the fight."

Pandit readily agreed to testify against the thieves and identified the accused for the police. "It was strange to see two girls fighting out with criminals and a crowd just standing and waiting to see who wins," said Pandit. "It was ridiculous. The girls were badly hurt and had bruises all over their faces. I immediately took them to the hospital."

The police have identified the accused as Sajid Shah,25,and Mohammad Moazzam Ali,22,both residents of Goregaon.

The police said the two took up menial jobs to make ends meet and admitted to robbing people in the past. They also confessed to using drugs. A court remanded the two to three days in police custody.

"We have arrested two of the accused and are looking for the third," said Nasir Pathan, senior inspector, Oshiwara police. "We will nab him soon."

An eye on SA, Sehwag opts for 'pace training'

CHENNAI: Virender Sehwag may be down but is keen to ensure he's not out. The destructive opener has been out of the Indian team for more than four months now but with a busy season on the horizon, he landed in the city on Tuesday for a stint at the MRF Pace foundation.

With an eye on India's tour to pace-friendly South Africa at the end of this year, Sehwag will be looking to sharpen up against some of the country's most promising quicks. He will also be looking to make the most of Australian legend Glenn McGrath's presence.

McGrath, who took over at the foundation from Dennis Lillee, is in town on one of his regular coaching visits.

Sehwag and McGrath have been part of some intriguing duels between bat and ball in the past so the Australian may be just the man to show him where he is going wrong.

Sehwag's last act for India was in the second Test of Australia's tour at Hyderabad in March. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, M Vijay and Rohit Sharma have since kept him out of the side in all three formats.

The third opener's slot in the Test side is still up for grabs though, and Sehwag is taking a different approach to that of Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir.

Fellow discard Gambhir, another contender for the third opener's slot, has joined English county side Essex in a bid to resurrect his India career. He is yet to make a mark after three innings of 31, 21 and 2 respectively.

Sehwag reportedly rejected the chance to go play abroad and has instead chosen to get back on track under the eyes of McGrath.

The 34-year-old is also trying his best to avoid attention from the media and keep things under wraps as he tries to make a comeback but an informed source confirmed this news to the TOI on Tuesday.

12km tall, 50km wide: Monster cloud shrouds Kolkata in darkness

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 27 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

KOLKATA: A 12km tall cloud, stretching from north to south, is waiting to burst on a city that is still soggy from last week's four-day drencher.

Darkness descended on Kolkata suddenly on Monday afternoon — almost as quickly as someone had drawn a curtain. Streetlights and headlights came on at 2pm. As people wondered what was happening, lightning streaked across the city and killed at least four people, including three schoolchildren. For 45 minutes, the menacing shroud hung over Kolkata but just when the residents were bracing for a deluge, the rain petered off. But the cloud isn't gone and Tuesday is going to be wet, says the weatherman.

The last time such a huge cloud formed over the city was 10 years ago, said regional meteorological director G C Debnath. Monsoon clouds often stand 8-9km tall but Monday's cloud was unusual, he said, adding, "Rarely do we witness such tall columns."

A sudden incursion of moisture from the Bay of Bengal added to the residual moisture left by last week's low pressure, and "up and down wind movements" led to the formation of the cloud. "It swelled further under the influence of a cyclonic circulation and contained large drops of rain and thunderclouds. The friction led to lightning," said Devendra Pradhan, deputy director, meteorology.

It proved deadly for students of a school in Deganga, North 24-Parganas. Five friends from Class VI had finished their school test early and sheltered under a construction site when they were hit by lightning. Chandana Mondal, Rupa Sardar and Shipra Parui died on the spot while Shampa Khatun and Mandia Kahar are in critical condition in a hospital. In Durgapur, Ranjan Sona, a farmer, was struck by lightning while working at the fields and died.

"We stopped the test midway because of a power cut and huddled all students in the school hall. We had no idea that these five students and some guardians had take shelter in a nearby building. We are shattered by the deaths," said headmaster Sirazul Islam.

The weatherman has forecast heavy showers for Tuesday as the cyclonic circulation is expected to intensify. "It could develop into a low-pressure area by Tuesday evening," said Debnath. The sudden influx of moisture was not associated with the impending low-pressure, he pointed out.

"This was a localized phenomenon. So, it was followed by a short spell of shower. But with the cyclonic circulation forming, a wet spell is likely to follow. The showers could turn heavier from Tuesday," said Pradhan.

Kolkata received 19.7mm of rain till 8pm, but it was enough to cause waterlogging in central and north Kolkata. Scores of trees were uprooted along EM Bypass and on the Maidan and Southern Avenue. Muktarambabu Street, CR Avenue, Rabindra Sarani, Ultadanga, Bentinck Street, College Street and the Park Circus connector were in ankle-deep water.

Mumbai gang rape: Rapists forced survivor to clean up crime scene

Written By Unknown on Senin, 26 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

MUMBAI: The depravity of the five accused in the Shakti Mills gang-rape case did not end with the brutalization of the photojournalist. After the crime, they forced the 22-year-old survivor to clean up the scene. The police have also recovered more evidence and released details about how the crime was perpetrated.

The fresh evidence includes the clothes of the survivor and also of the five suspects, broken beer bottles with which the suspects threatened the survivor and her male colleague, and the cellphones of the suspects. While the fingerprints found on the bottle will be used as evidence in the case, cellphone call records and signal locations will be mapped to retrace the suspects' movements before and after the crime. The evidence, along with other forensic samples, have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, Kalina.

In her FIR, the survivor has said that one of the men took away her cellphone and switched it off after her mother had made two calls inquiring about her well-being. On Thursday, August 22, the survivor and a male colleague left their magazine office for an assignment around 5pm. From Mahalaxmi station, they walked along railway tracks to reach Shakti Mills. "My colleague and I were looking for an entry when two men (who are among the five suspects) guided us. They left us and went inside the mill. After completing our shoot, we planned to go to the front gate, outside which we noticed vehicles."

It was then that they were accosted by three of the suspects, who harassed them about not having permission to shoot on the premises. As per the FIR, the survivor tried to call her boss, but the line was busy. Her boss soon called back, telling her and her colleague to leave the place.

The suspects mentioned a fictitious murder, tied up her colleague and asked her to go behind a broken wall. When she received a call from her mother, they told her to respond normally. She got a second call from her mother, and the suspects told her to do the same. After the call, one of the men snatched her cellphone and switched it off. Then they brutalized her.

England players celebrate Ashes win by urinating on Oval pitch

LONDON: In a distasteful postscript to their Ashes triumph, three top England players were on Monday at the centre of a huge controversy following reports that they allegedly urinated on the pitch at the Oval hours after the fifth and final Test ended last night.

The allegations, which originated from Australian journalists who were at the press box as darkness enveloped the ground, involved Stuart Broad, Kevin Pietersen and Jimmy Anderson who had all made significant contributions to England's 3-0 triumph in the series.

The players are alleged to have taken turns to urinate on the pitch after they sat on the ground with their post-match drinks, according to an Australian journalist.

The three players relieved themselves on the pitch to the cheers of teammates as the England players celebrated the victory.

England wicketkeeper Matt Prior tweeted a picture of the players drinking beer on the Oval pitch in darkness, calling it the "best moment of the Ashes".

Britain's Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said that the allegations will be examined but England coach Andy Flower refused to comment.

Robertson said, "If it happened it is not good behaviour".

According to media reports, about five hours after the last Test was stopped due to bad light with England close to victory, the players gathered near the pitch to continue their celebrations.

While the centre of the ground was quite dark, lights were on in the grandstands with people still cleaning up after a late finish, which saw the game go beyond usual time.

The incident has for sure taken some sheen away from England's win over arch-rivals Australia who failed to rise to the occasion.

Curator Cam Sutherland said that it was not a "good look" and called it unfortunate.

The final Test match of the series ended in a dramatic draw on Sunday after umpires took the players off for bad light, with England needing 21 to win in four overs.

There was controversy surrounding the ending and the umpires, Aleem Dar and Kumar Dharmasena, and Australian skipper Michael Clarke were booed by the home crowd.

However, the result did not seem to dampen English euphoria as the players celebrated in the most unusual manner.

The Ashes series had been dogged by controversies from the very first Test with the Decision Review System being the centre of intense debate.

Many of the decisions under the DRS came under sharp attack from both the teams, prompting the International Cricket Council to issue clarifications on the efficacy of the technology.

Stuart Broad's decision not to walk after clearly edging the ball in the very first Test created a lot of bad blood between the two teams and set the tenor for the remainder of the five-match series.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann lashed out at Broad saying the pacer would not be spared by the Aussies when England travel Down Under for the return series.

Lehmann had accused Broad of "blatant cheating" and called on fans to send the fast bowler home from the return Ashes series in tears.

Lehmann was fined 20 per cent of his match fee after pleading guilty to a charge of publicly criticising and making inappropriate comments against Broad in relation to an incident that occurred in a match.

Australian captain Michael Clarke was also jeered by the English crowd after the match yesterday.

An Australian daily wrote: "In one of the great ironies of the tour Clarke was booed by the crowd during the presentations despite his declaration saving a dead match. The team that deserved to be booed was England, which crawled along at two runs an over during the third day."

The incident of players allegedly urinating on the pitch came close on the heels of England discard Monty Panesar peeing on a bouncer following a heated argument in a pub. He was subsequently fined and issued an apology through his spokesperson.

Panesar, subsequently, was relieved by his county Sussex before the expiry of his contract. He was however taken by Essex.

Engineer's plastic-to-fuel device passes patent office tests

CHENNAI: Is necessity the mother of invention? Well, not always. Determined to find a cheap and sustainable fuel, engineer Chitra Thiyagarajan developed a unit that converts plastic waste into a fuel similar to diesel. After a series of tests in a sustained three-year effort, Thiyagarajan finally perfected the device and applied for a patent.

C S M Sundaram, Thiyagarajan's guide, said the device was the result of backbreaking work, persistence and dogged tenacity. "It involved research, fieldwork and frequent upgrading of design," he said. "I may have helped her occasionally but the credit is all hers," said Sundaram, 80, a retired professor of St Xavier's College, Mumbai.

She applied for a patent for the device in June 2013. "The patent authorities checked the machine for two months and verified that it could be patented. They accepted my application in August," Thiyagarajan said.

Explaining how her 'pyro-plant' functions, she said, all plastics except PET bottles are put in a chamber and heated in the absence of oxygen over chromium micro band heaters (similar to those used in water immersion rods) to temperatures of between 350oC and 375oC. The gas generated passes into another chamber with a water coolants coils on two sides. It is then pumped into another compartment half-filled with water. The fuel floats on the surface. Non-soluble gas that passes into a condenser can be used as an LPG alternative.

The device is not expensive and requires just three hours to generate fuel. A 5kg unit costs around Rs 75,000 and a 25kg variant, Rs3 lakh. Each kg of plastic produces 800ml of diesel. While the diesel can be stored, the LPG generated has to be used directly and cannot be compressed, Thiyagarajan said.

"A similar process is used to generate fuel in China but the production costs are high and it is a time-consuming process," Thiyagarajan said.

Indian Institute of Technology-Madras chemical engineering professor S Pushpavanam said the invention is feasible and could be used to produce fuel.

Thiyagarajan's other inventions include a night vision camera and an electromagnetic belt for physiotherapy.

Narendra Modi ‘virtually speechless’ in US?

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 25 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

GANDHINAGAR: Already popular among expats, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is working harder to wow the powerful non-resident Indians, who have significant influence back home. He is planning to reach out to Indians — especially Gujaratis in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Africa, and the Middle East — ahead of the 2014 elections.

Modi's office is lobbying hard to get the CM to address three big NRI gatherings scheduled in the US in September via video-conferencing - something he has been doing ever since the US decided not to give him a diplomatic visa after the 2002 riots.

There seem to be no hurdles in organizing most of his virtual appearances, except for the one he is most keen on: Modi wants to address a special function in Chicago on September 11 to mark the 120th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda's famous speech to the World Parliament of Religions. The event is supported by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The list of invitees includes US President Barack Obama, former president of India Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and top religious leaders from across the world. A senior official in Modi's office said getting a slot is a struggle because of the Union government's control over the ICCR. Modi idolizes the swami, whose real name was Narendra, and believes that only he can deliver a soul-stirring speech like the one in 1893.

"The CM is keen to speak at the event given its symbolic significance - 9/11 marks the terrorist strike on New York's World Trade Centre as well as Vivekananda's famous speech on universal brotherhood, tolerance and religious harmony. Speaking at the Chicago meet would reaffirm both his association with Vivekanada as well as reinforce his image of an anti-terror campaigner," he said.

Modi is also likely to address the world Gujarati conference organized in New Jersey from August 30 to September 1 and a function organized by Friends of BJP in USA in September-end via video conference.

Modi supporters in the UK, Canada and Australia are planning several other events before the Lok Sabha elections to mobilize the Indian community.

Mumbai journalist gang-rape case: All five accused arrested

MUMBAI: All five accused in the brutal gang-rape of a young photojournalist in the city have been arrested, three days after the incident triggered outrage across the country.

While the fourth accused Kasim Bangali was nabbed from Mumbai late on Saturday night, the fifth accused in the case Salim Ansari was arrested from Delhi on Sunday.

Ansari, the fifth and last accused was arrested by the Mumbai crime branch from the national capital and is being brought to the metropolis, a senior police official told PTI.

Delhi Police was not told about the arrest before hand, sources in Delhi Police said.

Before that, police had on Saturday arrested two of the accused — Vijay Jadhav and Siraj Rehman — while another accused Chand Babu Sattar Shaikh alias Mohammed Abdul had been arrested on Friday.

Vijay Jadhav and Chand Babu Sattar Shaikh were produced before the court on Saturday and remanded in police custody till August 30.

The 23-year-old victim, an intern with an English magazine, was allegedly raped by the five accused at the deserted Shakti Mills compound in Parel area of central Mumbai on Thursday evening when she had gone there with a male colleague on an assignment.

The accused tied the hands of the victim's colleague with belts and took her to a thicket where they took turns to rape her.

The incident, which was a chilling reminder of the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case of last year, has sparked nationwide outrage.

'Chennai Express' finally beats '3 Idiots'

'Chennai Express' box office collections have yet again made it obvious that it's the audience that can make or break a film at the ticket window.

Tweeting the box office collection numbers, well-known film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, "Rohit Shetty becomes most successful director of Hindi cinema: 3 centuries and 1 double century. Four films that feature in 100 cr+ grossers!"

Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express has crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark in a very short period. In fact, it also crossed the 100 crore mark in the shortest time period.

Rohit Shetty's understanding of the perfect ingredients for a typical masala Bollywood film clubbed with the business and marketing acumen of Shah Rukh helped Chennai Express thwart the records of Amir Khan's 3 Idiots, which has been ruling the top grossers charts till date.

At the same time, with this success Rohit Shetty too has emerged as the Bollywood's commercial movie king. Rohit Shetty's four films including Singham, Golmaal 3, Bol Bachchan, have made it to the Rs 100 crore club.

Nationwide outrage over journalist's gang rape in Mumbai, Centre seeks report

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: The gang rape of a young photojournalist in Mumbai triggered an avalanche of outrage across the country on Friday and condemned as despicable and shameful stirring memories of a similar attack last December in New Delhi that led to nationwide protests.

As people from all walks of life voiced their anguish, political parties, media associations and Bollywood were one in demanding harshest punishment to the perpetrators of the crime in a city which is seen as far safer for women than the national capital,

The attack also had its echo in Rajya Sabha which erupted in anger with agitated members expressing serious concern over increasing atrocities on women and the government assuring "harshest" action against the culprits.

Union law minister Kapil Sibal said sex assaults must be dealt with "in the severest manner".

"We cannot afford to let our women and children live in insecurity and must make sure that such attacks against women are dealt in the severest manner," he said.

Hundreds of people including members of several journalists' associations gathered in south Mumbai to stage a silent protest. Some wore black armbands, while others carried placards reading "stop rape" and "city of shame."

Media associations in Chennai said the "horrifying incident" has shocked the entire country once again raising the issue of safety of women.

Some even sniped at the Union ministry of home affairs and its equivalent in Maharashtra for failing to enhance the safety of women in the country since the Delhi gang-rape incident last December and after enactment of new laws.

BJP's Smriti Irani while raising the issue during zero hour in Rajya Sabha asked what steps had been initiated to prevent recurrence of such incidents even after repeated assurances of improving law and order condition in the aftermath of Delhi gang rape and targeted the Centre and the Maharashtra government.

Twitter was also abuzz with rage over the gang rape.

"Despicable! We are shamed! How long & God forbid, how many more before the criminals are punished? Wake up, India!" tweeted BJP spokeswoman Nirmala Sitharaman.

"helpless to say the least...words like "devastated".."disgusted" mean nothing at a timelike this!!!! #gangerape in my city...I feel ashamed," lamented producer-director Karan Johar on Twitter.

Kiran Bedi, former IPS officer tweeted, "Another shame!A photo journ gang-raped by 5 men in Mumbai. No wonder India is considered most unsafe place for women amongst G-30 countries."

"... thousands of women aren't safe in a country that demands of them patriotism, sacrifices and taxes," said one tweet. Some said legislations are merely not enough.

"If punishment is strict, rape incidents can be avoided," said a Jadavpur University student, while a Bhopal housewife said women and even shcool girls are not safe anymore.

Centre seeks report from Mumbai police

Terming as "extremely tragic and unfortunate" the gang rape of a 23-year-old photojournalist, the Centre on Friday said it has sought a detailed report from Mumbai police on the incident.

"First of all, what happened in Mumbai is a matter concerning that state. In spite of that, I have spoken to the Mumbai Police Commissioner. The investigation is progressing," home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters outside Parliament House.

Minister of state for home RPN Singh said the Home Ministry has sought a detailed report from the Mumbai police.

"It is an extremely tragic and unfortunate incident that has happened in Mumbai. We have asked for a detailed report from the Mumbai police. We have also asked the Mumbai police to take immediate action ... to arrest the accused. Harshest punishment should be meted out to these people," he said.

The 23-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by five men in Parel area in central Mumbai last night.

The incident took place at around 8 pm near Shakti Mills in Lower Parel area when the victim, working with an English magazine, was on an assignment, doing a story on "chawl", police said.

In a chilling reminder of the December gang rape in Delhi, the men tied up the victim's friend and raped the woman.

In a statement given to police, the girl said the five goons were present in the Shakti Mills compound. They started making lewd remarks and harassed her. When her friend intervened, two of them assaulted him. Three others took the woman inside the dilapidated structure and raped her.

Nokia threatens to ‘quit’ India: Report

AFP Aug 23, 2013, 03.23PM IST

(Nokia has told India's government…)

NEW DELHI: Finnish telecom giant Nokia has told India's government that the country is now its "least favourable market" to operate in and it makes better sense to export its products from China, a report said Friday.

Nokia, which is fighting a 20-billion rupee ($311 million) tax demand from Indian authorities, urged the government to "act quickly to correct the wrong perception of India as a place for business", The Indian Express newspaper reported.

"The political risk of operating in India" has become "suddenly substantially higher and may inevitably influence future decisions to develop one's operations in India", Nokia said in a letter quoted by the daily.

The reported warning comes at a bad time for India when foreign direct investment has slowed to a trickle amid mounting domestic economic woes including a plunging rupee, a huge current account deficit, slowing growth and perceived government policy paralysis.

The Finnish group did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the message which The Indian Express said was dated June 19 and was received by the finance ministry last month.

Nokia said its tax problems made it "more cost-efficient for Nokia to transfer the manufacture of mobile phones to China and to import them to the Indian market rather than manufacture them in Chennai".

Nokia, which has one of its biggest plants world-wide in the southern city of Chennai, is among a string of multinationals in tax disputes in India including Cadbury Royal Dutch Shell and Vodafone.

India has stepped up its pursuit of alleged tax delinquents to reduce a hefty budget deficit.

Nokia insists software downloaded onto its mobiles in India should to be taxed in Finland under a bilateral treaty between the countries, but India's tax authorities view it differently.

"Nokia does not think India can override its international obligations," Nokia was quoted as saying.

Tax claims against Nokia and other multinationals have "too great an impact on the predictability and certainty of Indian business environment to be ignored", Nokia added.

India -- one of the world's fastest-growing mobile phone markets -- is the second largest market for Nokia which began operations in the country in 1995 and employs 8,000 workers directly in Chennai.

Nokia which had been the country's leading handset maker for 14 years recently ceded its crown to South Korea's Samsung.

Mumbai gang-rape case: One more accused arrested, hunt on for three others

MUMBAI: Mumbai Police on Saturday arrested another accused in connection with Thursday's gang rape of a young photojournalist, while a jobless 19-year-old, already under arrest, was produced before a magisterial court which remanded him in police custody till August 30.

Accused Vijay Jadhav was picked up in the wee hours on Saturday from Madanpura area by the crime branch.

"We have arrested a second accused in the gang-rape case and he has confessed to his involvement. The probe is heading in the right direction and we hope to arrest all other absconding accused soon," commissioner of police Satyapal Singh told reporters.

Though Singh refused to divulge the identity of the accused, sources in the police department gave his name as Vijay Jadhav.

"The man has given information about others on the run and we will apprehend them soon. They have gone a little far off," the officer said in reply to a query.

Asked about the evidence gathered against the accused so far, he said, "We have all the evidence against them and will file a comprehensive charge sheet."

About the condition of the victim, Singh, who visited Jaslok Hospital where she is undergoing treatment, said, "Her mother told me it is good and improving."

Regarding the claim of the family of Mohammed Abdul, the teenage accused, the first to be arrested in the case, that he was a juvenile, the police commissioner said, "We will tell you about the profile, age and other related things once all of them are arrested."

Three other accused identified as Qasim Bengali, Saleem and Ashfaq are still at large and a manhunt has been launched to nab them.

Meanwhile, Chand Babu Sattat Shaikh alias Mohammed Abdul, was produced before the Bhoiwada holiday court at Dadar amid protests by a large number of BJP and Shiv Sena activists, who shouted slogans condemning the incident.

Public prosecutor Nandagiri told the court that the 23-year-old victim was still recuperating at the hospital and Abdul's custody was needed to trace the absconding accused.

Abdul, who stood near the witness box, showed no remorse and was seen yawning during the proceedings.

Accepting the prosecutor's plea, the court remanded him in police custody till August 30.

The victim was gang-raped by five men on Thursday evening when she and her male colleague had gone to the deserted Shakti Mills compound in Lower Parel on assignment.

The incident brought back shocking memories of the December gang rape of a paramedic in Delhi which had sparked a nationwide outrage.

According to Satyapal Singh, more than 20 teams, including 10 from the elite crime branch, have been pressed into service to track down the culprits.

I was offered cash to throw world meet final: Sushil Kumar

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 23 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: Cricket, it appears, is not the only sport to be hounded by the scourge of match-fixing. Double Olympic wrestling medallist and former world champion Sushil Kumar has revealed how he was approached to throw the championship bout at the 2010 world meet in Moscow.

As he prepared for his final against Russian Alan Gogaev, Sushil told TOI on Thursday that he was made an offer of a substantial amount to lose the bout. "A member of my entourage came up to me and said, 'Sushil, kushti ki liye keh rahe hai (They want to talk about the bout)'."

"When he explained the whole thing, I was aghast," remembers Sushil. "The money offered was around a good few crores. For a wrestler, it was really good money. The offer was communicated to one of our foreign coaches. The event was taking place in Russia and my final opponent was a Russian. It's our country so our player should win — that's what they seemed to want."

"I said, 'It's very strange. Here, we are on the threshold of getting the winning belt home to India, and I'm supposed to tank the final?'" Sushil swiftly put the thought behind him, focussed on the final and proceeded to demolish Gogaev 3-1 for India's only world championship wrestling gold medal. "It was not a matter of two or four crores. Humari bhi izzat ki baat thhi," said the champion during a visit to Times House on the one-year anniversary of his return home after his silver medal at the London Olympics.

Sushil said how he was humbled by the reception he received from the crowd after the final win in Moscow. "As I climbed down from the mat, I looked up and remembered noticing that there was no one sitting. Everyone in the stadium was giving me a standing ovation. It was most humbling," said Sushil during a free-wheeling chat.

Among his supporters cheering him on was Jabrail Hasanov, his semifinal opponent from Azerbaijan whom Sushil had beaten 4-3. "I have participated in four or five world championships, but the support I received in Moscow in 2010 was commendable. To beat a home wrestler in a country with a strong wrestling base is not an easy task," Sushil recalled.

Back to full training after a shoulder injury, Sushil Kumar is enjoying that familiar spring in his step that comes with being in the thick of things. His immediate target is the world championships at Budapest from September 16-22. He juggles his time between the SAI Centre in Sonipat for his morning training stints, only to show up at the Chhatrasal Stadium in the capital for the evening session.

When not perfecting his technique on the mat, Sushil said he likes to follow the exploits of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi. "His passing game is exemplary. It's always a joy to watch."

But while he cheekily said that he watched cricket only when Virender Sehwag was batting, Sushil confessed to being an unabashed Sachin Tendulkar fan. "You learn so much simply by just sitting next to him. Once during a promotional event, we were having dinner and he leaned over and told me, 'If you want to win another medal then stay as you are and don't follow these people by doing the things they do.' I looked up to see which people and he was pointing to some of his fellow cricketers. I won't name which ones. You make your conclusion," he said with a wink.

Mumbai journalist gang-rape case: One accused arrested, four others identified

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Police have arrested one accused in the photojournalist gang-rape case and have identified all others involved in the crime.

Talking to reporters here, the Mumbai Police commissioner said the arrested accused has confessed to his involvement in the case and has provided details of all others present.

More than 20 special teams are working on the case, he said, refusing to divulge the details of investigations.

We don't want to reveal the details of the accused as it is a sensitive case, he said.

The Mumbai top cop claimed that the police swung into action as soon as it was informed about the incident at around 8.30pm on Thursday.

The 23-year-old victim, interning as a photojournalist with an English magazine, was allegedly gang-raped at the deserted Shakti Mills compound in Lower Parel when she was on an assignment, doing a story on old chawls in the city.

In a chilling reminder of the December gang rape in Delhi, the men tied up the victim's friend and raped the woman.

In her statement to the police, the victim said the five assailants present in the Shakti Mills compound passed lewd remarks and began harassing her.

When her friend protested, two of them assaulted him, while three others took her inside the dilapidated structure and raped her.

The victim had identified two of the alleged accused as Rupesh and Sajid, the names by which they were addressing each other.

The police had earlier in the day released the sketches of the five accused.

The sketches were prepared on the basis of the description provided by the victim and her friend.

The accused were said to be in the age group of 24 to 30 years.

20 suspects were picked up for questioning in connection with the case.

The condition of the victim, admitted to Jaslok Hospital, is said to be stable. Preliminary reports suggested that she sustained multiple internal injuries, they said.

Dr Taran Gyanchandani, acting CEO of the hospital, said, "We are doing the needful ... she is under strict observation."

Earlier, senior Congress leader Murli Deora said five suspects have been arrested.

"This case has been cracked. Five persons have been arrested and are in the lock-up," he told reporters.

I forced Sachin Tendulkar to retire from ODIs, jokes Saeed Ajmal

NEW DELHI: Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal's might have a good sense of humour, but his joke on Sachin Tendulkar will certainly not go down well with the Indian batting legend's fans. In a recent interview to Wisden India, Ajmal has jokingly said that Tendulkar was forced to retire from ODI after being dismissed by him in the Asia Cup last year.

In the India-Pakistan clash of Asia cup 2012 at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, Tendulkar was scalped by Ajmal after scoring a 48-ball 52. India won the match by six wickets and with 13 balls to spare but interestingly, Tendulkar quit playing ODIs after that game.

Ajmal jokingly says that it was his wicket that forced Tendulkar to call time on his ODI career after 463 matches. Ajmal also lauded his success against Tendulkar. "I took his wicket in Mohali (2011 World Cup semifinal after Tendulkar scored 85 as an opener with Virender Sehwag) as well. He is a super superstar, that's what the world calls him. He has nearly 50,000 runs in professional cricket. So obviously it was great moment for me when I took his wicket.

"He was having trouble in picking the 'doosra' in his last ODI in the Asia Cup. Misbah said to me we could get him out caught at slips. Younis Khan moved to slips and it worked out exactly as planned. I got the wicket of the world-class batsman and it came off such a great delivery that he was compelled to quit ODI cricket after it," Ajmal said.

This is not the first time when Ajmal has taken on Tendulkar. In March last year, after the Asia cup, Ajmal had questioned Tendulkar's ability to play doosra and said, "If Sachin can't read doosra, then he is nearing his end."

Lid off leave travel concession racket: Govt, PSU employees to face CBI heat

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 22 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: The CBI has been called in by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to investigate a widespread racket in claims of leave travel concession (LTC) involving central government and public sector employees as well as travel agents.

The CBI, which was asked on August 16 by CVC to carry out a criminal investigation, is likely to question dozens of such employees. Large sums are said to have been siphoned out of the government by producing fake Air India tickets and boarding passes (the only airline that government and PSU employees are allowed to use for LTC).

A sizeable number are of the rank of under secretary and above. Most of them claimed to have travelled with their family to the extremities of the country — the northeast, Kerala and the Andamans. The racket, said sources, has been one of the worst kept secrets although there was no actionable evidence against it.

The Kolkata Police was the first to stumble upon the LTC racket in March this year when it detained a passenger at Kolkota airport with more than 600 blank boarding passes of Air India. He was to board a SpiceJet aircraft to Port Blair. On being interrogated, he claimed that he was to deliver it to someone in the Andamans. The surmise is that this someone in the Andamans was to fill up fictitious details of flights there on the blank boarding passes. An investigation by the police is underway, sources said.

Air India's vigilance division began an investigation after the airline was asked about the fake boarding passes. Initial inquiries by the airline confirmed that it was a fairly widespread practice among government employees to manipulate LTC by submitting forged boarding pass and tickets, and hugely inflating fares.

In March, the Rajya Sabha secretariat asked Air India for verification of seven tickets issued by a travel agency to secretariat employees on the Delhi-Kolkota-Port Blair sector. Air India reported back that the tickets and boarding passes were fabricated. "No such journey has been undertaken by the seven people," Air India said.

The fictitious tickets submitted to the RS secretariat turned out to be a crude job — they included a business class ticket, even though Air India has no business class seats to Port Blair. Some of the boarding passes had the same number, even same seat numbers. And each ticket was for Rs 1.35 lakh, although the fare on that particular day was nowhere near that amount.

Air India also carried out an internal investigation into another complaint, this one from the Ordnance Factory Board. From the Board's Jabalpur plant over 400 employees and their families ostensibly travelled to the northeast to avail LTC between 2006 and 2008. Under a special order of the government to promote tourism in northeast, even the lowest ranked government employees and their families can fly to northeast sector and claim airfare under LTC.

A ticket submitted by a Jabalpur employee was found to have been valued at an incredible Rs 2.11 lakh; it's hardly surprising that it turned out to be a forgery. While the e-tickets were definitely forged, it is still not clear how on many of these tickets people actually travelled.

It is suspected that some of these tickets may have been bought by cash by travel agents from Air India. And then they may have created forged e-tickets, showing higher fares. Whatever may be the case, the CBI is expected to investigate all the 400 families that travelled to northeast from Jabalpur, sources said.

Sources also said the LTC racket appears to be rampant across government departments, public sector units, and public sector banks.

It also appears that many officials submit forged boarding passes and e-tickets of travel between Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram, while they are actually travelling to Colombo or Singapore. In other words, on the basis of their LTC claims, employees are undertaking foreign trips, which this facility doesn't allow.

Google celebrates Claude Debussy's 151st birth anniversary

NEW DELHI: Google on Thursday remembered Achille-Claude Debussy, a French composer of impressionist music, with an animated doodle on his 151st birthday.

Born on August 22, 1862, Claude Debussy's love for music was evident from his childhood.

Debussy started taking piano lessons at seven. At the age of ten, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, a college of music and dance. Here Debussy spent 11 years studying music composition and playing instuments with some of the best musicians and composers of his time. Claude Debussy was also experimental and argumentative.

Debussy is remembered because of his unique style and has received scholarships for his composition.

His works grasped the morbid romanticism of the Symbolist movement.

Prominent and creative composer Rudolph Reti, a music analyst, pianist and composer, termed Debussy's music as "a new concept of tonality in European music".

Claude Debussy's compositions include orchestral, ballet, soloist and orchestra, chamber, solo piano and much more.

Google has dedicated an animated doodle to honour him. The doodle features a moonlight riverside scene with flashing streets lights. In the doodle, human figures are seen rowing boats, cycling and driving cars.

As the scene progresses Debussy's most popular piece, Clair de Lune plays in the background. The music ends with two people meeting under a red umbrella while rowing their boats.

On March 25, 1918, the great composer died of rectal cancer at his home in Paris.

US tech giants face uncertain future

Outsiders often think of Silicon Valley as a constantly changing landscape, a place where fortunes rise and fall with the next great idea. Now some of the technology industry's biggest names are finding out that once you fall behind, it is pretty hard to catch up.

Hewlett-Packard announced several significant personnel changes, along with sharply lower revenue and narrower operating profit margins. It was the latest in a string of disappointing earnings news from big technology companies that has some asking if the industry, after at least five years of growth, is finally slowing down.

"We're doing a turnaround in not the greatest economic environment," said Meg Whitman, HP's chief executive, in an interview. "Everyone is trying to position themselves for the new style of information technology. The fittest will survive."

But the bad earnings news from older, big tech companies does not — so far — appear to be spreading to more youthful internet companies like Google or Salesforce.com, which provide their software as a service over the internet.

HP's news, for example, comes on the heels of surprising plans announced last week to cut about 5% of the work force at the network computing company Cisco Systems and continuing issues at giant tech companies like Oracle, Intel and even Microsoft.

If there is a common thread among these older outfits, long considered bellwethers for their industry, it is that they are all struggling to adapt to a computing world where people use the internet on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Likewise, the information they retrieve is stored in a cloud of network computers that are used by many companies at the same time.

In some cases, they are big makers of things like personal computers, which people are not buying as quickly as they once did. In other cases, they are making costly corporate computing equipment like routers, which direct traffic on internet networks. Those routers are still in demand, but they don't typically attract the prices they once did.

"All the traditional enterprises are in a pickle," said Krish Ramakrishnan, a former general manager at Cisco who now runs Blue Jeans Network, a cloud-based videoconferencing service. "They want to have cloud businesses, but each of their divisions will have to transform differently."

For HP, a leader in personal computers, printers and computer servers, as well as data storage and networking, sales were down in almost every business. Total revenue was $27.2 billion, down 8% from a year earlier. Net earnings were $1.4 billion and, excluding special charges, were about 15% below their year-ago level. HP stock, which fell 1.8% in regular trading, dropped 6% more in after-hours trading.

Whitman also announced several executive changes, replacing the head of products and sales for business, and consolidating marketing and communications. Earlier this year she also replaced the head of her PC division.

"Revenue growth across the company has been very weak," said Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst with Sanford C Bernstein. He noted that HP now had one of the worst share valuations among all major American companies, which he said "appears to reflect a permanently declining business."

If it is any consolation, Whitman has plenty of company. Michael Dell, the chief executive of the computer maker Dell, is fighting to take his company private, a move that will almost certainly mean layoffs as the company moves away from selling personal computers, a once-good business that has gone bad thanks to the shift to tablet computing devices.

And at Cisco, sales are still strong, but John Chambers, the company's chief executive, signaled trouble ahead with his job cuts, which he said were necessary because of economic "uncertainty."

While there is no doubt there are broader economic issues affecting big-ticket tech sales — particularly in Asia, where Cisco's sales were off 3% from the same quarter last year — analysts believe Chambers' economic discussion fails to address the technology changes with which Cisco is trying to cope. In recent years, the company has faced a series of cheaper competitors, many of which rely more on software and off-the-shelf components, as compared with Cisco's custom-made equipment.

"They have to generate revenue from what they have always done, while they invest in a future that's very different, and change around their organization," said Mr. Ramakrishnan. "They have to move from selling mostly hardware, to selling software, while all the sharks are feeding off them."

That Intel is challenged in this new, more mobile environment is perhaps even more remarkable. Intel, after all, is often cited as one of the rare tech companies that saw a major change coming — in this case, it was wide adoption of PCs more than two decades ago — and adapted its business to take advantage. But those same executives acknowledged they have not moved quickly enough to build chips for mobile devices, and now they are working hard to catch up.

As these big companies try to adapt, they are even picking on each other. Cisco's gross margins were 70% in 2003, but are now 59%, in part because HP entered the market for internet routers. HP's computer server business has been pressed by Cisco's entry into the market. Dell has offered customers steep discounts on personal computers, Whitman has said, which hurt her PC business.

Just a few years ago, an alliance of Microsoft's Windows operating system and Intel chips dominated PCs, counting HP and Dell as important customers. Last year, Microsoft entered the hardware business with its Surface tablet, which came in versions using chips from both Intel and other companies. While sales have been poor, Microsoft is continuing to push the product. HP, for its part, has announced tablets and laptops using Google's operating system.

On a very personal level for employees of these companies, it's an odd time. Many, particularly early employees, were there when their innovations and more-affordable products displaced the last generation of big tech companies. Now they're on the downside of that cycle.

"Every emotion imaginable plays out," said Patrick Gelsinger, who worked at Intel for 30 years and is now the chief executive of VMware, a company that makes software used in cloud computing.

"Some folks are hoping to retire and their 401(k) is big enough," Mr. Gelsinger said. "Some are disheartened because they couldn't figure out how to adapt. Some are still putting their heads down."

Ekta Kapoor blames Shah Rukh Khan for OUATIMD failure

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 21 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

With her biggest release of the year, 'Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara' opening to a tepid box office response, Ekta Kapoor is not in a good mood these days. And the Balaji head honcho holds SRK responsible for the debacle. It was reported that Ekta had refused SRK's request for a screening of her film at Mannat and TOI has the details of the fallout.

Trouble started when SRK announced that Chennai Express will release on August 8 despite the fact that Ekta had already called dibs on Eid for the release of her ambitious project OUATIMD.

Ekta tried her best to outwit SRK in this battle, even calling in a favour from MNS (TOI report dated August 2) to make the star tow the line.

Then began a long series of negotiations between her and Chennai Express's producers, UTV Motion Pictures and Red Chillies Entertainment. Ekta finally agreed on the other big public holiday, August 15.

According to a source close to Ekta, she was assured by the production houses that they will withdraw their film on August 15 to make way for OUATIMD in at least 2000 halls across the country.

"Ekta relented because she was promised something in return. And the bait was the promise that Chennai Express wouldn't come in the way of the big release she had planned for OUATIMD on Independence Day," said the source. But given that Chennai Express set the cash registers ringing, the film's producers decided that making way for OUATIMD will not be profitable. When Ekta learnt about it early last week, she was left fuming. TOI has it that Shobha Kapoor called up UTV to enquire about the apparent volte face and was told that "it was SRK's decision".

Things got worse when Jeetendra stepped in. He tried to reach SRK, who did not answer the calls, alleged a source close to Ekta. "While most of his calls went unanswered, finally an unrecognisable person picked up to say, 'Shah Rukh sir is busy with interviews'," added the source. The end result was that OUATIMD ended up opening on just 1600 screens; a limited release for a movie which was reportedly made at a budget of Rs 85 crore. "If UTV had lived up to its promise, OUATIMD could have raked in about Rs 10 crore more on its opening day which in turn might have had a Domino effect on its subsequent collections. To add to Balaji's woes the halls they were given were small ones which in turn must have had an adverse effect on their opening day collection," said a source from the industry.

When contacted, Ekta said, "Whatever has happened is extremely disgusting. I am very angry." Though SRK's production house did not provide a statement, a source from the organisation told us, "Chennai Express released on August 9 and it is illogical to expect that the film will be voluntarily pulled out from theatres in its first crucial week."This was corroborated by a source close to Siddharth Roy Kapur, the other producer of the film.

An official from a leading multiplex in Andheri West, on request of anonymity said, "It's a producer's prerogative to withdraw a film to aid the release of the next one. But we did not receive any such requests from the producers of Chennai Express because it was doing very well. But please note that a producer can only ask for withdrawal, the number of shows we gave to OUATIMD on the first day were decided as per our discretion."

Another multiplex from Juhu told TOI that the producers of Chennai Express had "pressurised" theatres not to withdraw the film.

A zero FIR under section 376 was lodged at Kamala Market police station in central Delhi. on Tuesday evening.

Hacker who exposed Facebook bug to get reward from unexpected source

BOSTON: A man who hacked into Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page to expose a software bug is getting donations from hackers around the world after the company declined to pay him under a program that normally rewards people who report flaws.

Khalil Shreateh discovered and reported the flaw but was initially dismissed by the company's security team. He then posted a message on the billionaire's wall to prove the bug's existence.

Now, Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of cybersecurity firm BeyondTrust, is trying to mobilize fellow hackers to raise a $10,000 reward for Shreateh after Facebook refused to compensate him.

Maiffret, a high school dropout and self-taught hacker, said on Tuesday he has raised about $9,000 so far, including the $2,000 he initially contributed.

He and other hackers say Facebook unfairly denied Shreateh, a Palestinian, a payment under its "Bug Bounty" program. It doles out at least $500 to individuals who bring software bugs to the company's attention.

"He is sitting there in Palestine doing this research on a five-year-old laptop that looks like it is half broken," Maiffret said. "It's something that might help him out in a big way."

Shreateh uncovered the flaw on the company's website that allows members to post messages on the wall of any other user, including Zuckerberg's. He tried to submit the bug for review but the website's security team did not accept his report.

He then posted a message to Zuckerberg himself on the chief executive officer's private account, saying he was having trouble getting his team's attention.

"Sorry for breaking your privacy," Shreateh said in the post.

The bug was quickly fixed and Facebook issued an apology on Monday for having been "too hasty and dismissive" with Shreateh's report. But it has not paid him a bounty.

"We will not change our practice of refusing to pay rewards to researchers who have tested vulnerabilities against real users," chief security officer Joe Sullivan said in a blogpost.

He said Facebook has paid out more than $1 million under that program to researchers who followed its rules.

Sanjay Dutt applies for 14-day leave of furlough

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 20 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt has applied for a leave of furlough for the first time since his final incarceration. A source said that Dutt applied for a 14-day furlough under the jail manual rules that govern leave granted to a convicted prisoner. His application was made before the jail authorities at Yerwada prison on Monday.

The leave manual stipulates such leave to ensure prisoners remain integrated with the society outside the prison.

Earlier, the actor, who has been incarcerated at the Yerawada jail since the last three months, had applied for 30-day parole to avail of medical treatment. Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai told TOI, "Around 20 days ago, Dutt applied for parole under the prescribed jail format. His parole application has been forwarded to the divisional commissioner, who will take a decision on the matter. The divisional commissioner decides on the application after seeking a report from the police station concerned. The prisoner's behaviour is also considered while granting parole." Desai said any convict can apply for parole at any point of time. The actor's last option of a curative petition was recently turned down by the Supreme Court. In March this year, the Supreme Court upheld Dutt's conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case for illegal possession of weapons, but reduced his sentence to five years. Dutt had applied for an extension of six months to surrender in order to complete his film projects the court only granted him four weeks.

Dutt has been earning Rs 25 a day by making paper bags and has agreed to take part in cultural events in the jail. He was provided with medical assistance after he complained of high blood pressure.

The actor was held guilty only under the Arms Act for illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle before the 1993 bomb blasts that killed 257 people in the city. The special trial court had not found him guilty

Under the draconial anti terror law Tada and had even declared that he was not a terrorist.

The SC had upheld his conviction but brought down his original six year sentence to five years. Since he had completed less than two years in jail in his earlier stints during and after the trial ended, he had to surrender to serve out his remaining imprisonment and has been lodged at the Pune jail.

Pakistan court charges Musharraf with killing of Benazir Bhutto

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan's ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf was indicted on three counts on Tuesday over the 2007 murder of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in a gun and suicide attack, a prosecutor said.

Charging a former army chief is an unprecedented move in a country ruled for more than half of its life by the military and where the army is still considered the most powerful institution.

It was the second time that Musharraf, who ruled the nuclear-armed state from 1999-2008, had been summoned to face charges of criminal conspiracy and the murder of Benazir Bhutto in December 2007.

"He was charged with murder, criminal conspiracy for murder and facilitation for murder," public prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar told AFP at the anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi hearing the case.

Musharraf denies the charges and the case has been adjourned until August 27.

He has been under house arrest on the edge of the capital Islamabad since April 19, but appeared before the court in person.

"The charges were read out to him in the court. He denied the charges," said Azhar.

"The case has been adjourned until August 27 for evidence to be brought," he added.

Speeding train runs over 35 people in Bihar; angry locals assault driver, set coaches on fire

Written By Unknown on Senin, 19 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

PATNA: A speeding train ran over pilgrims crossing rail tracks in Bihar early on Monday, killing at least 35 people, according to officials.

PN Rai, a railway official in Bihar, confirmed 35 people had died in the accident at Dhamara Ghat station.

The train, Rajya Rani Express, stopped a few hundred yards beyond the spot where it hit the pilgrims. Angry locals then pulled out the train driver and assaulted him.

MP Dinesh Chandra Yadav said the driver had died, but a top railway official Arunendra Kumar said the driver was in hospital in critical condition.

The mob then got all the passengers out of the train and set some coaches on fire. Groups of young men also smashed the window panes of two other trains that were at the station.

The pilgrims were crossing the tracks when they were hit by the train, Dinesh Yadav said. Several other people were injured in the accident.

Arunendra Kumar said the express train was not supposed to halt at Dhamara Ghat and had been given clearance to pass through the station. However, some pilgrims waited on the tracks thinking they could stop the train, he said.

Monday was the last day of month-long prayer ceremonies at the Katyayani temple near Dhamara Ghat, a popular Hindu pilgrimage site. The pilgrims were returning after offering morning prayers.

Train runs over 35 devotees in Bihar, mob attacks driver

KHAGARIA (BIHAR): A speeding express train ran over devotees waiting on tracks to stop it, leaving 35 people dead and triggering angry protests by locals who attacked the train driver and set on fire its coach besides engine of another train at Dhamara Ghat Station in Khagaria district on Monday.

The 'kanwarias' (devotees of Lord Shiva) were on the tracks after alighting from the Samastipur-Saharsa passenger when they were run over by the Saharsa-Patna Rajyarani Express travelling at 80 kmph, officials said.

Additional director general of police (ADG) law and order S K Bharadwaj said 35 pilgrims were killed.

A senior railway official also said that the toll could be around 35, but refused to be quoted.

Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar said the train was not supposed to halt at Dhamara Ghat and was given clearance to pass through the area but the devotees were on the tracks thinking they could stop the train.

Though the driver applied emergency brakes, it was too late by then, he said, adding an internal inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The pilgrims were going to nearby Katyani Sthan temple to offer 'jalabhishek' to Lord Shiva on the fourth and final Monday of the holy month of Shrawan when the mishap took place.

Soon after the accident, local people attacked the train driver.

Superintendent of police SK Jha told PTI over phone that the engine of the Samastipur-Saharsa passenger train and an AC coach of Saharsa-Patna Rajyarani Express were set on fire by the enraged locals.

The two drivers of the express train, Rajaram Paswan and Sushil Kumar Suman, were traceless and their mobile phones switched off, ECR CPRO Amitabh Prabhakar said.

However, the Railway Board chairman said the driver was safe without specifying.

He said it was a case of trespassing as the pilgrims were illegally trying to cross the tracks.

Minister of state for railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the express was travelling at a speed of 80 km per hour when the accident occurred.

He said although relief trains carrying doctors and nurses were sent from Saharsha and Barauni, they could not reach the spot as the law and order situation there was not conducive because of protests by angry people.

There were no details available about the number of the injured, a railway official said.

According to sources, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has demanded that the families of the victims be given compensation.

However, the railway is not inclined for the same as those killed were illegally crossing the tracks, the sources said.

The Bihar chief minister expressed grief over the train accident and asked railway and Khagaria district administration to launch rescue and relief works to save lives of the injured people.

Khagaria MP Dinesh Chandra Yadav demanded that the families of the dead should be given Rs 10 lakh compensation each.

LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan said there were no proper facilities for treating the injured as there was no hospital nearby.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Wall 'hacked'

Khalil, a Palestinian white hat hacker, submitted bug reports to Facebook about a vulnerability that allowed him to post on anyone's wall. But Facebook's security team didn't do anything. So Khalil wrote on Mark Zuckerberg's wall about it and was generally a badass.

Khalil explains on his blog that he submitted a full description of the bug, plus follow-up proof of its existence to the Facebook security feedback page, where researchers can win rewards of at least $500 for finding significant vulnerabilities. Then he submitted again. The second time he got an e-mail back that said, "I am sorry this is not a bug."

When he posted on Zuckerberg's wall, Khalil said, "First sorry for breaking your privacy and post to your wall , i has no other choice to make after all the reports i sent to Facebook team ." He then detailed the situation and provided links.

Within minutes, a Facebook engineer contacted Khalil for more information and then blocked his account "as a precaution" while a security team fixed the bug. Later his account was re-enabled. But Facebook says that he cannot claim a reward for the find because in hacking Zuck's wall he violated Facebook's terms of service. They commented that, "exploiting bugs to impact real users is not acceptable behavior for a white hat. In this case, the researcher used the bug he discovered to post on the timelines of multiple users without their consent." Facebook admits, though, that its team should have been more diligent in following up on Khalil's submission. So. Cool. Problem solved.

Google goes down for 5 minutes, web traffic takes a dive

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 17 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: Google's services, including the popular Google Search, suffered a rare outage on early Saturday morning. The outage was noticed around 4.20am IST and lasted for around 5 minutes. All Google services were disrupted. If a user tried to access Gmail or Google Search, the web browser returned 502 error.

While the outage lasted just minutes, it caused a flurry of tweets on Twitter.

"I wonder how many people checked their wifi connection first before realizing it was Google that was down," a Twitter user said.

Around one hour later, GoSquared, a web analytics firm, said that it noticed a 40% dip in the pageviews.

"Google.com was down for a few minutes between 23:52 and 23:57 BST on 16th August 2013. This had a huge effect in the number of pageviews coming into GoSquared's real-time tracking — around a 40% drop, as this graph of our global pageviews per minute shows," noted GoSquared. "That's huge. As internet users, our reliance on google.com being up is huge."

Google's services dashboard that monitors and shows the status of Google services had a pink dot in front of each one, indicating that they were offline for the said duration. Clicking on each dot, revealed a generic message confirming the outage.

For example, the tab for Gmail noted, "We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a significant subset of users. The affected users are able to access Gmail, but are seeing error messages and/or other unexpected behavior. We will provide an update by 8/17/13 6:07 AM detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change. The incident lasted 1-5 minutes."

Around ten minutes after the outage was reported, Google engineers added to the dashboard that all problems had been resolved and the services were running fine.

Ekta Kapoor refuses SRK permission to screen OUATIMD

Shah Rukh Khan, like many other prominent people in Mumbai, is a member of a cinema-viewing club that allows him the privilege of seeing a movie one night in advance in the security of his home theatre, before it releases in cinemas across India.

However, the film can be viewed by these celebrities only after the broadcaster gets specific permission from the producer, who has a right to know who will be viewing the film. It so happened that on Wednesday night, Shah Rukh Khan or some member of his family apparently wished to see Ekta Kapoor's Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara at his preview theatre in Mannat. As is the practice, the broadcaster called a member of Ekta's team to secure permission.

Things aren't exactly hunky-dory between SRK and Ekta at this point, so the staff member, who would normally be qualified to give permission, forwarded SRK's request to his lady boss.
Our source says, "Ekta refused point blank to allow the Bollywood superstar to screen OUATIMD in his private theatre one night before. She apparently turned around and said, "Tomorrow, he can buy a ticket and see my film in a regular theatre like everyone else."'

Throughout the Chennai Express and OUATIMD clash, the media has steered clear of blowing up any issues between these two. And, it seemed on the face of it, that everything was cool between SRK and Ekta. But like our source points out, "Ekta didn't invite Shah Rukh to her iftar party and SRK didn't invite Ekta, her parents Jeetendra and Shobha or brother Tusshar for his Eid party. Reportedly, even Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan were not on the Mannat guest list for the same event.

In war of words, Salman Khurshid likens Narendra Modi to 'khalnayak'

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 16 Agustus 2013 | 22.14

PTI Aug 15, 2013, 06.49PM IST

(Modi, in his Independence…)

NEW DELHI: Hitting back at Narendra Modi for his attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress on Thursday said that he was indulging in "petty politics" and rejected as "tall talk" his challenge for a public debate.

"Prime Minister will come last. Let him debate with us first," Union minister Salman Khurshid said here when asked about the Gujarat chief minister's challenge to the PM.

He said that Modi is "so restless to become something big in the country" that he forgets that this is a day when political differences are forgotten.

To a question about Modi comparing his speech with that of the Prime Minister, Khurshid said it was a case of "tall talk by a person with small stature (Chhota munh badi baat)".

"Petty politics must not be allowed," he said to a question at to whether politics is taking over India-Pak relationship.

Modi, in his Independence Day speech in Bhuj, had slammed the Prime Minister for India's "weak and feeble" response to provocations from Pakistan and China.

The war of words between Modi and Congress appeared to touch a new low with the Gujarat chief minister talking of a "serial of Saas, Bahu and Damaad", an oblique reference to Robert Vadra's relationship with Sonia Gandhi and Khurshid wondering whether Modi was a "villain (khalnayak)".

"And is he like khalnayak? There was also that a film named Khalnayak. Khalnayak serial is also running. Ask him about that," he said.

The minister was talking to reporters at the AICC headquarters after the Congress president hoisted the national flag.

"Nepotism used to be the core of corruption in olden days TV serials ... With passage of time it has changed. A new TV serial of Mama and Bhanja came in corruption and now its moving towards a serial of Saas, Bahu and Damaad," the Gujarat chief minister said.

While Khurshid advised Modi to desist from "patting his back", another Union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad sought to dismiss attempts of comparison between Modi and the Prime Minister by quipping, "If today I say that I am bigger than (Barack) Obama, people will call me mad."

Azad also referred to a Hindi proverb to reject any comparison between the Prime Minister and Modi, wondering, "How can any CM give a challenge to PM. Where is the comparison between Raja Bhoj and Gangu..." He added, "Who has stopped anybody from giving a challenge. Sitting in one's home everyone is a tiger ..."

"If somebody has no scheme, no programme and does politics only in the name of religion ... what can we say about it," Azad said when asked about the BJP leader's criticism of the UPA government's programmes and policies.

He said, "There is one Prime Minister in the country, while the number of chief ministers is two-and-a-half dozen. I do not want to compare one chief minister out of them with the Prime Minister.

"For us, all chief ministers are the same. To whichever party they may belong, they are chief ministers for us. We also have a campaign committee, each political party has a campaign committee chairman. So there is nothing big about it."

Khurshid had a dig at the Gujarat chief minister over his "yes we can" speech in Hyderabad, saying it was an import from Obama's speech, which someone prepared for him.

"If somebody gives him something in writing, he speaks that. Somebody wrote for him what Obama had said and he said that also. He said yes we can ... Now we will have to see, whose written text he is reading from when he talks about Pakistan, Europe, America and India," he said.
