MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt has applied for a leave of furlough for the first time since his final incarceration. A source said that Dutt applied for a 14-day furlough under the jail manual rules that govern leave granted to a convicted prisoner. His application was made before the jail authorities at Yerwada prison on Monday.

The leave manual stipulates such leave to ensure prisoners remain integrated with the society outside the prison.

Earlier, the actor, who has been incarcerated at the Yerawada jail since the last three months, had applied for 30-day parole to avail of medical treatment. Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai told TOI, "Around 20 days ago, Dutt applied for parole under the prescribed jail format. His parole application has been forwarded to the divisional commissioner, who will take a decision on the matter. The divisional commissioner decides on the application after seeking a report from the police station concerned. The prisoner's behaviour is also considered while granting parole." Desai said any convict can apply for parole at any point of time. The actor's last option of a curative petition was recently turned down by the Supreme Court. In March this year, the Supreme Court upheld Dutt's conviction in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case for illegal possession of weapons, but reduced his sentence to five years. Dutt had applied for an extension of six months to surrender in order to complete his film projects the court only granted him four weeks.

Dutt has been earning Rs 25 a day by making paper bags and has agreed to take part in cultural events in the jail. He was provided with medical assistance after he complained of high blood pressure.

The actor was held guilty only under the Arms Act for illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle before the 1993 bomb blasts that killed 257 people in the city. The special trial court had not found him guilty

Under the draconial anti terror law Tada and had even declared that he was not a terrorist.

The SC had upheld his conviction but brought down his original six year sentence to five years. Since he had completed less than two years in jail in his earlier stints during and after the trial ended, he had to surrender to serve out his remaining imprisonment and has been lodged at the Pune jail.
