LUCKNOW: Less than 12 hours after aggressively defending Noida SDM Durga Shakti Nagpal's suspension and saying the decision had nothing to do with the sand mafia, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday swung into damage-control mode and reached out to the officer.

The change of heart was apparently triggered by a video that went viral showing SP Lok Sabha candidate from Gautam Buddh Nagar, Narendra Bhati, making a chest-thumping speech to local supporters and taking credit for Nagpal's suspension in "41 minutes."

With chief minister Akhilesh Yadav out of town, Nagpal, attached to the board of revenue after being placed under suspension, met with the state's senior bureaucracy on Friday.

Chief secretary Jawed Usmani confirmed to TOI that Nagpal met him and clarified her position.

He, however, said that Nagpal did not make any written representation to him.

Apart from Usmani, on Friday, Nagpal also met with Anita Singh, who is secretary to the chief minister.

Earlier, TOI had reported that the Noida district magistrate's report had exonerated Nagpal and said the district administration had not used any force to demolish the wall of a religious structure in Kadalpur village of GB Nagar. The DM's report also said that since 70% of residents in Kadalpur villager belonged to one community, there was no possibility of communal tensions between two groups; also, villagers agreed, on the administration's advice, to demolish the disputed wall voluntarily.

Only a day earlier, the chief minister said Nagpal's suspension had no connection with the sand mafia was ordered in order to prevent communal tensions from flaring up in the village.

Although the CM did not comment on how the wall was disputed, he said the government had taken inputs from the local intelligence units to make its assessment of the situation, following which Nagpal was dismissed.

Sources told TOINagpal was likely to make a written representation to the state government outlining her version of events leading to the controversial suspension.

In this, she is known to have explained she acted as per the rules and did not issue any "orders" to bring down the wall of a local religious structure coming up illegally on government land.
