Rahul Gandhi returns to Delhi after 56-day sabbatical

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 16 April 2015 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: Ending all speculation, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi finally returned to Delhi on Thursday after his 56-day sabbatical.

The Congress vice-president arrived here at 11.15am on a Thai Airways plane from Bangkok, PTI reported.

The plane, which was scheduled to land at 10.35am, was delayed by 40 minutes, sources said.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi reached the 12, Tughlaq Road residence of Rahul before 11am and was soon followed by daughter Priyanka.

The Congress heir apparent has been away from work for almost about two months, with his leave announced by Congress on the day Parliament's budget session got underway on February 23.

As the announcement of the sabbatical surprised everyone, the idea as much as its timing, Congress said Rahul wanted some time out to introspect on the recent debacles faced by Congress and to hammer out strategy for the future as also his ideas for the party conclave to be held soon.

However, Rahul's absence left the party to field questions about his location and return on a daily basis. "Every individual has a right to privacy and we must respect that. Our vice-president did not escape or disappear... His one month absence seems to have become a problem in India," AICC spokesman P C Chacko said, yet again on Wednesday .

For the Congress vice-president, the return coincides with an increasing frequency of public comments from members demanding that Sonia Gandhi continue as party chief. Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit's remarks on Tuesday followed similar views aired by former MP Sandeep Dikshit and former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh.

A harried Congress on Wednesday sought to impose a gag order on controversial comments. "Senior members should refrain from making open comments. They should not create unnecessary controversy as interested sections want to create confusion," Chacko said, adding that any suggestion of differences between Sonia and Rahul were "completely wrong".

Rahul will attend the farmers rally in Delhi on April 19, a party protest against the land acquisition bill of the Modi government.

Separatists raise Pakistan flag in Srinagar, insult India, but no arrests yet

NEW DELHI: Hours after separatist leader Masarat Alam held an anti-India rally while welcoming return of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani in Srinagar, India reacted by only registering an FIR at Budgam police station against Geelani, Alam and Bashir Ahmed Bhat alias Peer Saifullah.

The FIR was lodged for "provocative activities" in Hyderpora area. FIR No 92 /2015 under sections 13 Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 120-B, 147,341,336,427 RPC was registered against the separatist leaders.

But no arrests were made by the time of filing this report. Union minister of state for home Kiran Rijiju said the state government had been asked to act against "those who had broken the law''.

Bhat, however, remained defiant and rejected charges of unlawful activities. "We are only promoting the aspirations of the people of Kashmir. Look at their enthusiasm," he said.

Earlier, videos showed the 47-year-old Alam, a likely successor to separatist top gun Syed Ali Shah Geelani, raise slogans in support of Hafeez Saeed and Pakistan.

The video shows Alam chanting with thousands of his supporters, "Hafeez Saeed ka yehi paigham, Kashmir banega Pakistan". Alam was released from prison after four years on March 7 this year after the formation of PDP-BJP government in Jammu and Kashmir led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Thousands of people flocked the streets, some raising Pakistan's flags and shouting anti-India slogans.

Meanwhile, taking strong exception to the waving of Pakistani flags and raising of pro-Pakistan slogans at a rally in Srinagar, BJP today asked ally PDP to take immediate action against separatist leaders like Masarat Alam, failing which it said that "consequences" would follow, PTI reported.

"This is unacceptable. We demand immediate action against Alam and the others who were involved in today's rally. There can be no leniency on this, this is clearly a major aberration and we expect PDP to take action.

"If corrective action is not taken... If PDP does not conform to expected notes (sic) of BJP and the Centre, consequences would follow," said BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao. But it is the BJP-PDP who are in the government and Rao said the ruling alliance's purpose was to take concrete steps to ensure peace and stability in the state.

"What happened today is a complete reversal of that. This is unacceptable. We clearly expect some kind of action," he said.

After a gap of five years, Jammu & Kashmir government allowed hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to hold a public rally today on the outskirts of Srinagar where his supporters, including Alam, raised pro-Pakistan slogans while others waved Pakistani flags.

Rahul Gandhi returns to Delhi from Bangkok

NEW DELHI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday returned to Delhi from his almost two-month long "unexplained" sabbatical, which had raised questions over his leadership of the party that is struggling to find its feet after a string of electoral defeats.

The 44-year-old leader arrived here at 11.15am on a Thai Airways plane from Bangkok, ending days of intense speculation over his return and amidst celebrations by party workers who burst crackers outside his residence.

Wearing a dark shirt and seated in the back seat of his vehicle, he arrived escorted by his security personnel and drove straight into the house without interacting with the waiting mediapersons.

The return of Rahul comes ahead of the party's planned farmers' rally here on the contentious land bill issue which he is likely to address.

The plane, which was scheduled to land at 10.35am, was delayed by 40 minutes, sources said. Shortly later, Rahul drove to his 12, Tughlaq Lane residence where his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka were waiting.

Rahul had left quietly before the Budget session began on February 23 but it is still not known where he had spent the days.

The party had then said that he "requested Congress president Sonia Gandhi for some time to reflect on recent events and future course of the party".

Ever since the announcement of his temporary break from political life, there has been speculation that he was unhappy with not getting a free hand to run the party, a contention which the party has officially denied.

Rahul's leave had come amid talk of an AICC session, where he was expected to be elevated as Congress president.

During his absence, several party leaders including former chief ministers Amarinder Singh and Sheila Dikshit came out in the open pitching for Sonia Gandhi to continue as president and raised questions over his leadership.

Sheila Dikshit voices reservations over Rahul Gandhi

Congress leaders had announced that Rahul would be back by April 19 as he would be addressing a farmers' rally on land bill issue at the Ramlila maidan here on that day.

The rally is being held on the eve of the second phase of the Budget session of Parliament. Rahul had skipped the first phase which saw the Congress taking on the government over the land bill issue.

Party leaders voiced confidence that Rahul will provide leadership with dynamism and commitment and take pro-active measures.

"He is back and I have no doubt that he will be not only taking proactive measures but also with dynamism, with commitment provide leadership," Congress leader Anand Sharma said, adding that farmers' issue has been close to Rahul's heart.

There are no 'item numbers' in politics: BJP

The BJP, meanwhile, took potshots at the Congress vice-president, saying he "ran away" as he had lost all confidence.

"From Nehru to Rahul, it is the withering away of the dynasty," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.

"The Congress Party is saying that Mr Rahul Gandhi will conduct a successful kisan rally, to which we would say there is no item number in Indian politics or politics as such. You can't just reappear, attend a rally and then vanish again. You have to be serious," Sambit Patra said.

He added that Rahul's return from his sabbatical had hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

"This is for the first time in Indian politics that an important member of a political party was absconding for such a long period of time and his return has become news," said Patra.

Maharashtra bypoll: Shiv Sena Trupti Sawant defeats Narayan Rane

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 15 April 2015 | 22.14

MUMBAI: Congress leader Narayan Rane once again received a major political setback after a widow of former Sena legislator late Prakash Sawant defeated him in a bypoll with a comfortable margin of around 19000 votes.

Sawant led Sena's home turf Bandra E where Matoshree is located. This is Rane's second consecutive defeat after he lost election to Vaibhav Naik on his homeground in Kankavli.

While Rane received 33703 votes, Shiv Sena's Trupti Sawant has got 52711 votes pushing MIM candidate (15050) to third position. Sawant's victory has given Sena a much needed boost ahead of civic polls in Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad and later in Mumbai n Thane.

In Tasgaon R R Patil's widow has won with a thumping margin of over 1 lakh vote. She defeated a BJP rebel.

According to sources Rane's political rehabilitation now looks bleak and he will be at his party's mercy but, for the Congress, there's a silver lining even in the Mumbai loss; the party seems to be back in favour among at least the minorities with more votes this time than in the last year's elections. Also, Cong will not have to deal with a resurgent and, therefore, rebellious Rane and the big guns in the party will breathe easy for now.

David Cameron stumped by a bouncer from a 10 year old Indian-origin girl

LONDON: He has managed to stand his ground against hawks like UKIP leader Nigel Farage, coalition partner turned critic Nick Clegg and his primary tormentor and prime minister hopeful Labour leader Ed Miliband.

But Britain's prime minister David Cameron was left stumped on Tuesday by a bouncer coming from an unlikely foe - a 10 year-old.

With just over 20 days to go before Britain goes into what is being called the most unpredictable general elections in the country's recent history, Cameron was on his campaigning trail in Greater Manchester when he was faced by a question he hadn't prepared for.

Reema, a student of Indian origin from the city of Salford asked him "If you could pick one politician apart from yourself to win who would it be and why?".

At first, Cameron who unveiled the Conservative Party's cradle-to-grave election manifesto on Tuesday promising voters "security at every stage of your life" decided to duck the question and tried to buy time by replying "Wow. If I could pick a politician? Would they have to be living or dead?".

However, unable to evade the direct question, Cameron replied "If I thought someone else should win the election I would not be standing myself, so I can't really answer the question about who else I would like to win. There are lots of candidates around the country I am very enthusiastic about. I am afraid it is too difficult to say I would like someone else to win other than me or I wouldn't be here, and I am quite keen on winning".

Impressed, the PM who can fend off any query around the NHS or immigration of whether Britain would stay in the EU, admitted that it was the toughest question he had faced. "Top question, it is the best one I have been asked all election campaign," Cameron said when he was leaving.

Cameron recently announced he will step down and will not serve a third term as prime minister if his party remains in government after the general election on May 7 this year.

Cameron who on May 11, 2010 was elected Britain's youngest PM in decades following the resignation of Gordon Brown said that if re-elected, he would serve the full five years of another parliament and then leave the top office. Cameron confirmed he would occupy 10 Downing street till 2020.

Cameron said "I've said I'll stand for a full second term, but I think after that it will be time for new leadership. Two is wonderful but three might just be too many". He added "No. I think I'm standing for a full second time"

The last general election in 2010 in UK was won by the Conservatives, led by Cameron, who won 306 seats - 20 seats short of an overall majority and resulted in the a hung parliament.

India builds first 'smart' city as urban population swells

GANDHINAGAR: India's push to accommodate a booming urban population and attract investment rests in large part with dozens of "smart" cities like the one being built on the dusty banks of the Sabarmati river in Gujarat.

So far, it boasts modern underground infrastructure, two office blocks and not much else.

The plan, however, is for a meticulously planned metropolis complete with gleaming towers, drinking water on tap, automated waste collection and a dedicated power supply - luxuries to many Indians.

With an urban population set to rise by more than 400 million people to 814 million by 2050, India faces the kind of mass urbanisation only seen before in China, and many of its biggest cities are already bursting at the seams.

Ahead of his election last May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised 100 so-called smart cities by 2022 to help meet the rush.

READ ALSO: What makes a city 'smart'?

At a cost of about $1 trillion, according to estimates from consultants KPMG, the plan is also crucial to Modi's ambition of attracting investment while providing jobs for the million or more Indians who join the workforce every month.

His grand scheme, still a nebulous concept involving quality communications and infrastructure, is beginning to take shape outside Gandhinagar, capital of Gujarat, with the first "smart" city the government hopes will provide a model for India's urban future.

"Most (Indian) cities have not been planned in an integrated way," said Jagan Shah, director of the National Institute of Urban Affairs which is helping the government set guidelines for the new developments.

Among the challenges to getting new cities built or existing cities transformed is the lack of experts who can make such huge projects work and attracting private finance.

"To get the private sector in, there is a lot of risk mitigation that needs to happen because nobody wants a risky proposition," he told Reuters, stressing the need for detailed planning.

To build smart cities, India allocated 60 billion rupees ($962 million) in its annual Union budget for the financial year starting April 1, even as it spent just a fraction of last year's allocation of 70.6 billion rupees, said Shah.

Old cities or new?

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT), as the smart city is called, will double up as a financial hub, with tax and other breaks to lure banks, brokerages and other businesses.

Developed in partnership with IL&FS Engineering and Construction, it aims to compete with India's own financial capital of Mumbai as well as overseas rivals like Dubai and Singapore.

Pressure on India's existing urban centres is already intense, with cities like Mumbai gridlocked by traffic and hampered by poor infrastructure and a lack of amenities like parks and effective public transport.

Yet some experts believe that building new cities may not be the answer to India's swelling urban population.

"To address India's urbanisation challenge we have to start looking at our existing cities," said Shirish Sankhe, director at consultant McKinsey and Company, India.

He added that new cities would be only a small part of the solution relative to brownfield projects.

India has built planned cities in the past, including Chandigarh, designed by French architect Le Corbusier, and Gandhinagar itself. But the scale of its current push is unprecedented.

A bird's eye view from atop one of the two office buildings on the 886-acre GIFT site, a venture which began when Modi was chief minister of Gujarat, shows little sign yet of the 9 billion rupees spent on the first phase.

But the sandy plain hides infrastructure including an underground tunnel for utilities, a first in India.

Flipkart pulls out of Airtel's net neutrality violating Airtel Zero

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 14 April 2015 | 22.14

Indian e-tailing giant Flipkart seems to have relaised that it can no longer ignore the growing chorus against net neutrality. As just days after its CEO Sachin Bansal defended net neutrality 'violating' Airtel Zero, the company has pulled out of the service.

The news, first reported by NextBigWhat, has been confirmed by Flipkart spokesperson. In a statement, the company said, "We at Flipkart have always strongly believed in the concept of net neutrality, for we exist because of the internet. Over the past few days, there has been a great amount of debate, both internally and externally, on the topic of zero rating, and we have a deeper understanding of the implications."

The company added that based on this, it has decided on the following:

* We will be walking away from the ongoing discussions with Airtel for their platform Airtel Zero.

READ ALSO: What is net neutrality and why it is important?

* We will be committing ourselves to the larger cause of Net Neutrality in India. We will be internally discussing over the next few days, the details of actions we will take to support the cause.

READ ALSO: Fight for net neutrality unites internet
READ ALSO: Time to fight for net neutrality in India

* We will be working towards ensuring that the spirit of net neutrality is upheld and applied equally to all companies in India irrespective of the size or the service being offered and there is absolutely no discrimination whatsoever."

Interestingly, just last week, after a deluge of tweets and blog posts panning the Indian e-commerce giant's alleged anti-net neutrality move, Bansal took to Twitter to express his view on net neutrality.

In a series of tweets, he said, "I'm for #NetNeutrality. I spend time/money helping startups in india. Will never support things which suffocate innovation."

Defending Airtel Zero, he posted, "0 (Zero) rated apps for limited time doesn't go against #NetNeutrality. Costs/competition are very high. Can't be sustained for long. 0 (Zero)rating only reduces data costs for users. Fears of a telecom big brother emerging are unfounded. Choice wins. Always."

Airtel had launched 'Airtel Zero,' a platform through which it will offer users free access to certain mobile apps on April 6. These apps will be from developers who have signed up with the company.

READ ALSO: Complete coverage on net neutrality

Airtel's Zero platform is against the principles of net neutrality as under it the company will offer an advantage to certain players in terms of cost of access and will even promote them. These players will most likely shell out a fee to get this favourable position. While Airtel will get an additional source of revenue, for service and app providers, it will be an additional expenditure just to ensure that they don't lag behind their competitors.

Net neutrality implies equal treatment to all Internet traffic and any priority given to an application or company on payment basis is seen as violating the concept.

Anti-trust watchdog CCI is reportedly looking into schemes launched by some telecom operators, including Airtel, Reliance Communications and Uninor, that claim to provide 'free' access to certain internet applications, even as the companies defended their stand saying these initiatives did not go against 'net neutrality'.

Telecom regulator Trai, which last month floated a discussion paper on this, is also looking into the issue.

"Non discriminatory net availability is what we need to strive for," telecom and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, while adding that an expert committee was looking into the matter and should submit its report within a month to help the government make an informed decision.

According to the minister, internet is one of the finest creations of the human mind and it is a property of the entire human race and not of any country or society.

"Internet to become entirely global should have a link to local and when we talk of digital inclusion it must be available to the underprivileged and on the margins," he said.

Land grabbed for railway track, 2 farmers to get train in return

SHIMLA: Two farmers from Himachal Pradesh's Una district may become proud owners of Delhi-Una Janshatabdi Express on April 16 if a court order is executed.

The court of Una's additional district and sessions judge Mukesh Bansal on April 9 ordered to attach the DelhiUna Janshatabdi if the railways failed to pay compensation to two farmers whose land was acquired for laying the Una-Amb track in 1998.

The court said if the railways failed to pay around Rs 35 lakh to Mela Ram and Madan Lal by April 15, the train would be stopped at Una at 5am on April 16 and attached by the court. Ram is entitled to Rs 8.91 lakh and Lal to Rs 26.53 lakh. Ram and Lal had moved the court against the delay in payment of compensation even after the Himachal Pradesh HC had directed the railways in 2013 to pay the money within six weeks.

READ ALSO: UP farmers get Rs 100, Rs 63 as relief for damaged crops

Advocate Arun Kumar Saini, who represented the farmers, said the rail ways had acquired the land in 1998, following which the two fil ed a case for higher compensation. In 2009, the railways too moved the court but in 2011 the district court increased the compensation.

The court order had given three months to the railways for filing an appeal against the verdict. However, the railways moved the HC only in 2013 and the HC stayed the order on the condition that the increased compensation should be deposited in the court within six weeks. "But the railways haven't deposited the amount until now," Saini said.

As the HC had also made it clear that after the lapse of six weeks, parties would be at liberty to execute the order, the aggrieved farmers moved the lower court. After hearing the plea on April 9, judge Bansal ordered to attach the Janshatabadi train. "We'd submitted a list of four trains, two passenger, Himachal Express and Janshatabdi, and the court directed to attach the Janshatabdi," Saini said.

Singapore maths question: How to solve the problem for school children that has stumped the world

A TV presenter in Singapore has sparked an unlikely viral craze after posting a maths problem that was posed to the nation's children.

Initially confusing but very doable, it has sparked thousands of comments and shares - particularly when it was initially thought to have been posed to 10-year-olds.

"Hello Singapore" presenter Kenneth Kong has since clarified that it was actually a problem set to 14-year-olds in the Singapore and Asean Schools Math Olympiads (SASMO).

But that hasn't stopped people testing their mettle against Singapore's youngest and brightest.

So can you solve the question? Here it is - and don't read on below the image if you don't want to be told the answer:

Albert and Bernard just became friends with Cheryl, and they want to know when her birthday is. Cheryl gives them a list of 10 possible dates.

May 15 May 16 May 19

June 17 June 18

July 14 July 16

August 14 August 15 August 17

Cheryl then tells Albert and Bernard separately the month and the day of her birthday respectively.

Albert: I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know that Bernard does not know too.

Bernard: At first I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know now.

Albert: Then I also know when Cheryl's birthday is.

So when is Cheryl's birthday?

After Mr Kong's post attracted such interest, he was contacted by the executive director of SASMO who clarified that the "supposedly P5 (primary school) question" was posed to maths Olympiad contestants on 8 April.

Henry Ong also stated that it was the 24th of 25 questions - in other words "a difficult question meant to sift out the better students". Mr Ong said he was nonetheless pleased "that this question has generated so much interest and 'solutions' on the internet".

And here's the true 'solution', courtesy of a debate on Singapore's Study Room:

First we need to figure out if Albert knows the month or the day. If he knows the day, then there is no chance that Bernard knows the birthday, so it must be that Albert knows the month.

From the first statement, we know that Albert is sure that Bernard doesn't know the birthday, so May and June should be ruled out (the day 19 only appears in May and the day 18 only appears in June). In other words, if Albert had May or June, then he cannot be sure that Bernard doesn't know, since Bernard could have had 18 or 19.

Following that statement, Bernard knows that May and June are ruled out.

Then, Bernard is able to know which month it is. So it must be either July 16, August 15 and August 17 (not 14th as then he can't know).

Since Albert subsequently can also be sure of the date, he must know it's July. If it's August, he can't be sure as there is August 15 and 17.

So the answer is July 16.

Be careful while transferring money

Written By Unknown on Senin, 13 April 2015 | 22.14

When was the last time you went to a bank to transfer money? Today, 80-85% of NEFT and RTGS transactions happen through netbanking or apps. Online transfers are convenient, fast and cost nothing extra. All you have to do is register a person as a beneficiary by giving their account number and bank IFSC code and you can transfer money real time. But what if you accidentally send money to a wrong bank account?

To reduce the possibility of errors, customers have to key in the beneficiary account number twice. Also, if there is a mismatch between the account number and the IFSC code, the system will not accept the entry. Moreover, post adding a beneficiary, there is also a cooling period of 30 minutes during which you cannot transact.

During the cooling period, some banks send customers text notifications on their registered mobile numbers, confirming the account number of the beneficiary they have added. Customers can reconfirm the number at this stage. Some give you the option of adding the beneficiary's mobile number when you register so that they can be intimated via sms.

However, chances of errors still persist. If you accidentally put one digit wrong and it doesn't correspond to the account holder's name, the transaction can still go through.

It is also possible that you had the wrong account number to begin with. You can also mistakenly put an extra zero to the amount to be transferred.

According to the RBI, responsibility to provide correct inputs in the payment instructions, particularly the beneficiary account number information, rests with the remitter or originator. So, the onus of the mistake will solely be on you. Inform the bank immediately.

The turnaround time also depends on how quickly the customer alerts the bank, the banks involved and the stage at which the transaction is at. "If the remitter and beneficiary accounts are with the same bank, the process is quicker. If you alert the bank within an hour, the money could be reversed immediately," says Jairam Sridharan, President, Retail Lending and Payments, Axis Bank.

The beneficiary has to be intimidated as well. Without the beneficiary's permission, the bank cannot reverse the transaction. If the beneficiary refuses to cooperate, then you will have to take legal recourse.

The RBI clearly states that, "In cases where it is found that credit has been afforded to a wrong account, banks need to establish a robust, transparent and quick grievance redressal mechanism to reverse such credits and set right the mistake". However, this is not a regular procedure for banks. "Since the occurrences are pretty low, say two to three cases a quarter, most banks do not have a formal redressal process in place," says Sridharan. It is important that you take precautions. Checks like sending a smaller amount, copy-pasting rather than typing the account numbers will save you a lot of trouble later.

Kanpur mechanic’s son all set for MIT sojourn

KANPUR: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the dream destination of budding engineers from across the globe. In September next, the premier US institute will open its doors to an unlikely candidate — son of a mechanic from Kanpur — with full scholarship to the tune of Rs 1 crore. When he passes out from MIT two years from now, Ayush Sharma will become the first graduate from his family.

Nobody at his school, Kendriya Vidyalaya on IIT-Kanpur campus from where he has appeared in class XII board this year, had doubt about 17-year-old Ayush was a brilliant student. But, MIT was something of a dream even for Ayush. "I had heard a lot about MIT in my school. I came across many pathbreaking research its students and professors were doing. As I am one of the three people selected from across the country, I am feeling elated," enthusiastic Ayush told TOI on Sunday.

A resident of Panki area of the industrial city, Ayush's father Rakesh Sharma is a mechanic with Public Works department) and his mother Manju Lata Sharma retired as a constable with the Central Reserve Police Force.

A jubilant Rakesh Sharma said, "We never had to force him to study. I always used to say to him don't study so much." We never bothered about his studies, what we always bothered about his health as he would not eat and sleep properly, said his mother. "But I am feeling elated now that he has been selection for MIT," she said with pride.

Studying on the IIT campus has come as a blessing for Ayush. At his school, he came across Avanti, a coaching programme run by IIT students and alumnus for children from lower income group. He joined Avanti two years ago and through its efforts got selected for Yale University's prestigious Global Scholars Program last year.

The competitive summer program targets outstanding high school students globally, giving them the opportunity to meet a talented community of fellow students, engage with world-renowned professors and interact with extraordinary visiting experts. While Ayush secured a full tuition waiver from Yale, he needed to raise funds for his travel to the US. He accomplished this through a crowd-funding campaign that raised $1,500 (90,000 INR) in just six hours. Ayush plans to do the same for raising money for his September trip.

"After attending Yale University's Global Scholars Program, Ayush was completely transformed. He had a broader mindset and was convinced that he wanted to go to world's top university for his undergraduate studies," recalled Varun Varma, a University of Michigan alumnus and associated with Avanti.

At MIT, Ayush does not want to gain knowledge just for himself, but wants to transform the whole education system and make a real impact on the society. "To me, MIT with its position at the forefront of research, seems like the best place of the world to achieve this. Once a billionaire, Raju now earns Rs 50/day

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 12 April 2015 | 22.14

HYDERABAD: From poster boy to prisoner; from a billionaire to a mere daily-wager! Jailed Satyam Computers founder Ramalinga Raju's life turned upside down ever since he decided to pen that confession letter in January 2009.

Raju, for whom moolah freely flowed into his coffers before the multi-crore financial fraud, will now have to toil hard in jail to earn a meagre pay of Rs 50 daily. He cannot even spend it all on himself.

According to jail rules, Qaidi no. 4148 (Raju's new identity) will be allowed to use only half that sum for personal purposes daily during his imprisonment.

Satyam fraud: When the Gods didn't help Raju

Raju can buy basic essentials such as soap, toothpaste, biscuits, bread or water bottles from the jail canteen for Rs 25 he would be allowed to spend. The rest would be deposited in an account opened for him at the jail like the rest of the inmates. He can withdraw the money at the end of his term.

But for that 'skilled' Raju has to report to work together with prisoners branded as 'unskilled' and 'semi-skilled'. Unskilled prisoners are made to do chores like cleaning jail premises but do not earn even a penny. Semi-skilled ones get a daily wage of Rs 30, and are largely employed in factories.

Jail authorities were deliberating about various jobs that can be offered to Raju. "We are trying to see where we can fit him in. There are three options right now,'' said a jail official. "Either we will get him to help out in the library and assist in maintaining it or engage him in our adult education programme. We are laying extra attention of late on it under which he can teach illiterate prisoners. The third option is to get Raju involved with the basic computer courses that we offer to our inmates.'' He said the convict will have no say in the matter.

Before the employment, Raju will have to live through a 'quarantine' period in the jail. "For 15 days, we will observe his behaviour. We will see how he is getting adjusted to the jail atmosphere,'' the official said. "So far he has not shown any signs of being disturbed or depressed. That might also be because he has been in jail before.''

Much like Friday, both Ramalinga Raju and his brother Rama Raju had no visitors on Saturday too.

PIO teen cracks all 8 Ivy League schools, plus 6

WASHINGTON: Acceptance to one Ivy League school is considered a big deal in U.S academic circles in this college admission season, but try telling that to Pooja Chandrashekhar, who is being welcomed by all eight IVS, plus six other elite universities, for a unique 14/14 record.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania are the eight Ivy Leagues that will be happy to accept the Virginia-born 17-year old, the only daughter of two engineers who emigrated from Bangalore. Also in the running for her — Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford, Duke, Georgia Tech, the University of Virginia, and the University of Michigan.

So what's so special about Pooja? A SAT score of 2390 (out of 2400), a 4.57 grade point average, and acing all 13 of her Advance Placement exams helped. But what also boosted her application is enterprise, initiative, and creativity.

She founded a national non-profit that encourages middle-school girls to participate in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs; built a windmill to explore aspects of renewable energy and also developed a mobile app that analyzes speech patterns and predicts with 96 percent accuracy if a person has Parkinson's disease.

"She really stands out as a TJ kid who has taken the mission of the school as far as it can go," Principal Evan Glazer of Thomas Jefferson, a highly-regarded school in Virginia where Pooja graduated from, told the Washington Post, which first reported the story. "She's a STEM superwoman who humbly approached her interests in curious ways."

It is not typical, nor is it advised, for students to apply to all eight Ivy League schools, which derive the term from the original "Interscholastic Four League," (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia) which were dubbed IV (eye vee). The application process is intense and cumbersome and each has different strengths and requirements.

But Pooja aimed for all eight ivies hoping to get into just one of them, "because college admissions is really unpredictable."

"They are all fantastic schools and I didn't want to leave any one out of consideration," she told TOI over phone on Saturday amid the trill of congratulatory called. "I wanted to make sure I could get into a really good school and have more choices." She spent a large part of last summer working on applications, writing supplementary essays for each of them.

Her parents, Chandrashekar Doddaveeriah (BMS College of Engineering and Texas A&M) and Pratibha Bore Gowda (MS Ramaiah College of Engineering; Arizona State University) fully supported her go-for-all-IVS decision.

Pooja has now narrowed her list to Harvard, Stanford and Brown, where she got into a program that guarantees her admission to the university's medical school. She eventually hopes to pursue a program in liberal medical education and bio-engineering.

Although she sounds like an alpha-geek, Pooja is like a typical teenager in many ways. She enjoys watching television shows like Shark Tank, eating out — and, no surprise, listening to Bollywood music.

Pooja is the second immigrant high-schooler in recent weeks to nail admission to all eight Ivies. Harold Ikeh, a Long Island teenager who was born in Nigeria and was eight when his parents emigrated to the U.S also scored a 8/8 and admission to five other schools — MIT, NYU, Johns Hopkins University, Stony Brook University and Vanderbilt University.

Revoke voting rights of Muslims to put an end to vote-bank politics: Shiv Sena

MUMBAI: Stoking a controversy, the Shiv Sena on Sunday demanded that voting rights of Muslims should be revoked as the community has often been used to play vote bank politics.

The Sena also compared All India Majlis-e-Ittihadul- Muslimeen (MIM) and Owaisi brothers with "poisonous snakes" who spew venom to "exploit" the minority community.

"Vote bank politics is being played in the name of fighting against the injustice meted out to Muslims. Their educational and health status is being used politically. This politics was once played by the Congress and now every other person calls himself secular.

READ ALSO: Shiv Sena to Muslims — For special treatment, go to Pakistan

"If Muslims are only being used this way to play politics, then they can never develop. Muslims will have no future till they are used to play vote bank politics and thus Balasaheb had once said to withdraw Muslims voting rights. What he said is right," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said on Sunday.
The "secular masks" of all the so-called secular political parties will be worn out, once their voting rights are withdrawn, it said.

Taking a dig at AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi for challenging Sena president Uddhav Thackeray to come to Hyderabad, the editorial said, "Owaisi dares us to come to Hyderabad. But we want to ask him if Hyderabad is in India or in Lahore, Karachi or Peshawar. The pride of Marathis is known in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Kandahar as well."

"By saving the hiding place of snakes, you cannot kill them. Owaisi and his party are like a snake which, if fed, will do no good to the nation. AIMIM is an old snake," it said.

Yazidi women 'gang-raped in public' by Isis fighters, harrowing accounts reveal

Disturbing stories have emerged after 200 were released this week.

Yazidi women released by Isis this week were gang-raped in public by fighters and tortured by their captors, according to distressing accounts of their ordeals.

Hundreds of women and children were abducted from the town of Sinjar, in northern Iraq, and held hostage by Isis for over eight months. Some were sold to fighters as sex slaves or given as 'prizes'. Many were beaten and forced to convert to Islam.

More than 200 were released by fighters in Himera, near Kirkurk, earlier this week. They have told harrowing tales of the physical and sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of their captors.

Sex slavery driving girls held by ISIS to suicide

Ziyad Shammo Khalaf, who works with the Yazda organisation to support Yazidi victims, said children were separated from their mothers and "distributed among houses" in Mosul and Tal Afar.

"If you come and sit with the girls you will find different stories from girl to girl. A lot of them have been sold to Isis fighters, they have been raped in public, and by more than two or three people at a time," he told the International Business Times. "They were tortured, beaten and subject to any type of violence."

Other Yazidi survivors have also given disturbing accounts of their treatment by Isis, with one women describing how militants were forcing hostages to give their blood for transfusions.

The atrocities endured by Yazidi sex slaves was exposed more fully in an 87-page report released by Amnesty International in November 2014, who found girls and women were repeatedly raped and sold as sex slaves.

The report found that even children were being sold to Isis fighters or given as "gifts".

Isis considers Yazidis heretical and published an article in its propaganda magazine Dabiq attempting to justify the practice of selling them using theological rulings of early Islam.

However, experts say the practice has caused friction among the ranks of the extremist group. Sajad Jiyad, Research Fellow and Associate Member at the Iraqi Institute for Economic Reform, told Independent that many supporters had been in denial about the trafficking of kidnapped Yazidi women until the Dabiq article was published.

Kolkata: Housewife raped in flat, electrician held

KOLKATA: A 49-year-old mother of two was raped, allegedly by an electrician, in an apartment complex in Santoshpur on Wednesday afternoon, triggering alarm bells in lakhs of homes across the city and shattering the belief that living within walled complexes offered a degree of safety.

Police say robbery wasn't the motive and the electrician, Pradesh Sur alias Bikram, pounced on the woman on realizing she was alone. He shows no remorse and was caught grinning at news cameras while being taken to court on Thursday.

READ ALSO: The desire to rape is in our genes, says study on sex offences

UNESCO to ask PM Modi to introduce programmes for reducing rapes in India

The woman has two sons — the elder one is employed with a private company and the younger one is in college. The family was getting the electrical wirings replaced and Bikram and another electrician had been visiting the top-floor flat for the last few days, say police. Bikram may have been studying the family's movements and knew that the husband and both sons would be out in the afternoon, said an officer.

"On Wednesday, the electricians began work around 3.30pm. Bikram went upstairs and knocked on the door, saying he needed to enter the flat to complete the electric bell wiring. As soon as he entered, he found the woman alone. He used force to push her down on the bed before raping her," said DC-south Suburban Santosh Pandey.

After Bikram left, the survivor was determined not to let him get away. She fought her trauma and dialed the police helpline 100 at 4pm. The Lalbazar HQ responded immediately and a police team was rushed to her house. They got the mobile number of the accused from the contractor and started tracking the location. With technical surveillance and inputs from the local police network, a team led by OC Jainal Abedin zeroed in on Bikram's house in Dhalua, Sonarpur, in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday and arrested him.

Investigating officers have not found any criminal record against Bikram yet, but they were surprised by his complete lack of remorse during investigation and production in court. In fact he was seen smiling while being taken to court.

The survivor is still in shock but she is helping investigators. A medical test has confirmed rape, police said. Woman police officers are helping her recover from the trauma and have taken her to an undisclosed location.

"Bikram was living in Sonarpur with his wife but had sent away his children to some relatives elsewhere, saying Sonarpur wasn't a good place for them. It seems he had no intention of robbing. The court has granted us seven days custody of the accused. We will interrogate him thoroughly," said an investigating officer.

Sources said police are looking for the second electrician to see if he abetted the crime in any way. "We have petitioned Alipore court so that the survivor can record her confidential statement before a magistrate. We might go for an identification parade," added the officer.

Rajasthan Royals player approached for spot-fixing by Ranji teammate

NEW DELHI: The spectre of corruption reared its ugly head yet again in the IPL with a Rajasthan Royals player reporting an approach for spot-fixing last month, clearly showing that attempts to fix matches are still being made in the controversy-ridden Twenty20 event.

Full coverage: Indian Premier League 2015

Confirming that a cricketer was indeed approached, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said the player's action showed that the Board's efforts to educate players over perils of spot-fixing are paying off.

"A player was approached and he immediately intimated @BCCI anti corruption unit. Glad that BCCI education policy showing positive results" Thakur tweeted today.

His post added: "Players are alert & they know what is to be done due to our regular education efforts."

Though Thakur did not reveal the identity of the Mumbai-based player, Rajasthan Royals has five cricketers from the city -- Ajinkya Rahane, Pravin Tambe, Dinesh Salunkhe, Dhawal Kulkarni and Abhishek Nayar.

Rajasthan Royals, at the centre of the 2013 spot-fixing scandal as well, also confirmed the development and promised zero tolerance.

"Over a month ago, a player from Rajasthan Royals was approached inappropriately by a player (who was not part of the IPL) in connection with the Indian Premier League 2015 matches," RR CEO Raghu Iyer said in a statement.

"Maintaining high standards of integrity, the player informed the Rajasthan Royals management of this inappropriate approach. In keeping with applicable IPL Regulations, Rajasthan Royals management immediately reported the incident to the Anti-Corruption & Security Unit (ACSU) of the BCCI.

"Rajasthan Royals commends the player for having reported this incident immediately and for his honesty and uprightness. His dedication to maintain the highest standards of integrity needs to be lauded," he added.

Iyer said RR, whose players were arrested during the 2013 scandal, will take a very strict view of any corruption.

"Rajasthan Royals in keeping with its zero tolerance approach immediately reported the incident further to the ACSU/BCCI for further process. Rajasthan Royals will continue to provide full support and assistance to the BCCI to ensure that the game of cricket is played in the right spirit.

"This incident does highlight that if players and other officials cooperate and disclose information or approaches immediately, the game can be kept clean and free from undesirable elements and activities," he said.

According to a report, a Mumbai-based Rajasthan Royals player was approached by his Ranji teammate with an offer of money if he followed a pre-decided pattern of play. Initially dismissing it as a joke, the player declined the offer and reported the incident to the BCCI's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).

The latest incident brings back the memories of the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal which led to the arrests of three Rajasthan Royals cricketers including former India fast bowler S Sreesanth.

The spot-fixing saga also forced N Srinivasan to step down as BCCI president after his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was found guilty of betting.

RR co-owner Raj Kundra, who wants to give up his share in the franchise now, was also questioned during the investigation was indicted by the Supreme Court-appointed Mukul Mudgal committee.

The scandal was a massive hit to the event's credibility with the country's apex court raising serious concerns about the conflict of interest and corruption in the league.

PM Modi arrives in France, India 'mulls direct purchase of Rafale jets'

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 10 April 2015 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may reach a breakthrough on a long-delayed deal to buy Rafale fighter jets from France in talks with the French president on Friday, reports said.

India's government has been in negotiations since 2012 to buy 126 Rafale jets from France's Dassault Aviation, but the estimated $12 billion dollar deal has hit roadblocks over cost and assembly of the planes.

Reports said ahead of talks between Modi and French President Francois Hollande on Friday that the government was considering a direct purchase of a smaller number of jets to accelerate the acquisition and replace its ageing stock.

The Hindustan Times said the government was "seriously considering a strategic purchase of up to 40 Rafales for the Indian Air Force" due to "operational necessity", with further purchases later.

It quoted an unnamed source as saying a new deal could be worked out this year, with the exact number of planes depending on the final price.

READ ALSO: India draws bottom line for Rafale

Defence analyst Nitin Gokhale reported on his blog, Newswarrior, that the government had decided ahead of Modi's first official visit to France to buy 60 jets.

He quoted unnamed sources as saying Modi would would discuss the deal with Hollande on Friday.

"The issues you referred to will also be discussed. We expect movement on these issues," MEA spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said in response to a question on the deal.

"There will be substantive discussions on defence and nuclear issues. Wait for the outcome," Akbaruddin added.

Until now the Indian government has been negotiating directly with Dassault, whose boss Eric Trappier recently insisted the deal was "95 per cent finalised".

Hollande has said he and Modi "will have discussions" about the Rafale deal while stressing he did not want the issue to define their relationship.

Both the Indian defence ministry and Dassault declined to comment.

Akbaruddin said India expects French companies to participate in 'Make in India' programme in the field of defence as well as civil nuclear energy, "where India can make some nuclear installations with France."

The Jaitapur project, where French company Areva is to set up six nuclear reactors with total power generation capacity of about 10,000 MW, is stuck for long because of differences over the cost of electricity to be generated.

Modi, who arrived here on Friday on a four-day visit, will also address two meetings with French CEOs — one on infrastructure and another on defence.

He will also have 'Naav pe Charcha' (chat on boat) with Hollande when they go for a cruise on Seine river which passes through Paris.

Bengaluru girl refuses to pay Rs 30 extra, auto driver hits her thrice

BENGALURU: A private firm employee was allegedly attacked by an autorickshaw driver here when she refused his demand for extra fare.

Further, when she called the police helpline, operators allegedly told her: "Come to police station, we can't come to you."

The driver, Rizwan Basha, hit the woman four times but onlookers didn't come to her rescue. He is also affiliated to Ola Cabs service. Although it didn't happen when he was on duty with Ola, the operator said it terminated the driver's service from its platform.

"Though it did not happen on a ride booked through Ola app, we have zero tolerance for such behaviour. We are working with the customer to share all driver information, so as to help her report this incident to the authorities. We are committed to the safety and security of all users of the Ola app at all times," said Ola Cabs.

In her complaint posted on the Ola Cabs Facebook page, the woman said she got into the autorickshaw on the condition she would pay by the meter. But he demanded Rs 30 extra once he started going to her destination. When she protested, he got angry and shouted, "Chal utar."

When she said she'd complain to autorickshaw drivers nearby, Basha verbally abused her and stopped his vehicle. "He got off the autorickshaw and forcefully tried to drag me out by my wrist," she wrote on the social media site.

She called 100 from her mobile phone and started explaining the situation but the driver stood next to her and abused her loudly. She claimed police personnel didn't bother about her complaint. That's when the driver started hitting her on her arm.

"He had hit me hard about three times by now and I was scared. I started screaming for help and people gathered around as if I was a circus monkey and this master was trying to tame me by hitting me. No one came to my rescue," she wrote.

When she took a cellphone photo of the driver, he got more furious and hit her again. By then, police called her back and when she explained the situation they asked her to come to the police station and they can't go to the spot.

On their FB page, police said the case has been forwarded the Traffic Management Centre. The woman was yet to file a police complaint till Thursday evening.

Flipkart now paying million-dollar salaries to new top hires

BENGALURU: India's biggest online retailer and India Inc toddler Flipkart is paying million dollar-plus salaries along with stock options worth millions more to a clutch of engineers and a strategy expert it has poached from marquee global firms such as Google and McKinsey as part of its strategy to aggressively build a technology capability that can rival Amazon in the country.

Two of Flipkart's latest hires — Punit Soni, who joined from Google as its chief product officer, and Peeyush Ranjan, its head of engineering who also joined the Bengaluru firm from the web search titan — are getting fixed salaries of around $1 million (Rs 6.2 crore) a year each apart from $3-6 million in stock options, according to company sources familiar with their compensation.

READ ALSO: Peeyush Ranjan to join Flipkart as Senior VP

A third recent hire, Saikiran Krishnamurthy, who has joined Flipkart from global consulting firm McKinsey & Co as the chief operating officer of its commerce division, is also being paid a similar amount, they added.

The salaries would make them among the highest-paid engineers and non-board level executives across the Indian startup universe and probably even India Inc. Few Indian companies pay division heads as much, and million-dollar salaries are usually the preserve of CEOs.

The salaries Flipkart is paying the likes of Soni and Ranjan compares favourably with salaries of top executives in India's $146-billion information technology industry.

For example, at Wipro, CEO TK Kurien was paid $1.1 million, excluding stock options, in 2013-14, according to regulatory filings. TCS chief N Chandrasekaran took home a package of nearly $3.15 million while Cognizant CEO Francisco D'Souza took home a pay cheque of close to $1.5 million, excluding stock options.

Infosys' Vishal Sikka gets about $5.08 million, excluding stocks.

Flipkart sources said paying top-dollar salary was essential to lure talent, especially from Silicon Valley working at top global names. Unlike in India, top engineering talent in Silicon Valley can command salaries worth several millions of dollars.
In October 2013, Reuters news reported Twitter paid Christopher Fry, a senior vice-president of engineering at the microblogging site, $10.3 million, just behind CEO Dick Costolo's $11.5 million.

Building a team

"Fixed salary apart, stock options and joining bonuses are an effective tool to attract such talent to relocate from the Silicon Valley," said one person familiar with these hires. Flipkart is under pressure to build a team that can match Amazon on technology and innovation fronts, and fend off sprightly and pugnacious domestic rival, SoftBank-backed Snapdeal.

As ET reported last week, these high-profile hirings underscore a gold rush among fast-growing companies to tap into Silicon Valley for talent to bolster technology capabilities that are often a key differentiator in the fast-growing but cut-throat sector. Experts said such salaries were unlikely to be the norm.

"E-commerce top hiring is similar to how retail looked in 2000 and telecom during 2003-04. New capabilities have to be built, but these salaries are not sustainable," said Anandorup Ghose, who leads compensation and governance practice at Aon Hewitt.

Responding to an email query sent by ET on Thursday, a Flipkart spokesperson said on Friday morning the company does not comment on compensation details. "However, these numbers are completely inaccurate."

Satyam fraud case: Ramalinga Raju, all other accused found guilty

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 09 April 2015 | 22.14

HYDERABAD: All 10 accused, including B Ramalinga Raju, in the multi-crore accounting fraud Satyam case were found guilty on Thursday by a special court in Hyderabad.

The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on Friday.

During the last hearing on March 9, special judge BVLN Chakravarthi said, "On April 9, the judgment will be pronounced. I am making it very clear. April 9 will be the final date for the verdict. No question of further adjournments. Court will not wait."

Touted as the country's biggest accounting fraud, the scam had come to light on January 7, 2009, after the firm's founder and then chairman B Ramalinga Raju allegedly confessed to manipulating his company's account books and inflating profits over many years to the tune of crores of rupees.

READ ALSO: Satyam case: Timeline

Raju was arrested by Andhra Pradesh Police's crime investigation department two days later after he allegedly confessed to the fraud, along with his brother Rama Raju and others.

All the 10 accused in the case are currently out on bail.

Trial over in Satyam scam

Around 3,000 documents were marked and 226 witnesses examined during the trial that began nearly six years ago.

Beside Ramalinga Raju, the other accused are, his brother and Satyam's former managing director B Rama Raju, former chief financial officer Vadlamani Srinivas, former PwC auditors Subramani Gopalakrishnan and T Srinivas, Raju's another brother B Suryanarayana Raju, former employees G Ramakrishna, D Venkatpathi Raju and Ch Srisailam and Satyam's former internal chief auditor V S Prabhakar Gupta.

Raju and others were charged with offences like cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery and breach of trust under relevant sections of IPC for inflating invoices and incomes, account falsification, faking fixed deposits, besides allegedly falsifying returns through violation of various Income Tax laws.

In February 2009, the CBI took over the investigation and filed three charge sheets (on April 7, 2009, November 24, 2009 and January 7, 2010), which were later clubbed into one.

The first two chargesheets dealt with the account fudging by Raju with the assistance of nine others, while the third charge sheet relates to "violation" of various income tax rules.

While the CBI accused Raju and the others of cheating, breach of trust by way of inflating invoices and incomes in the first and third chargesheets, the second one dealt with the accused allegedly falsifying returns through violation of various IT laws.

During the trial, the CBI alleged that the scam caused a loss of Rs 14,000 crore to shareholders of Satyam, while the defence countered the charges saying the accused were not responsible for the fraud and all the documents filed by the central agency relating to the case were fabricated and not according to the law.

The Enforcement Directorate had also filed a charge sheet against them under Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

In January last year, Ramalinga Raju's wife Nandini Raju and sons Teja Raju and Rama Raju were among 21 relatives of the ex-Satyam boss who were convicted by a special court for economic offences here for default in income tax payment.

‘I feel like killing myself right here in this field’

MATHURA: It's as if elephants trampled Kaptan's 2.5-acre wheat field. The crop lies flattened, the golden kernels turning black. As the 38-year-old farmer steps into his field at Chaumuhan, barely 2km off NH 2, his feet sink into two-inch deep slush. Four days after a severe hailstorm pummelled the district, his farm, like countless others in this block, remains waterlogged.

"There's nothing left to harvest. It'll take 10 days for the field to dry," says Kaptan with a vacant expression. "Ghar mein bachche khana maangte hain. Mann karta hai is khet mein hi jaan de doon (My children demand food. I feel like killing myself right here in this field)."

Friday's hailstorm was the latest in a series of tragedies that have made Mathura district one of the ground zeroes of farm distress. It started with a drought last monsoon — when Mathura received 42% rain — hitting paddy output. Golden basmati prices dropped to around a third of the previous year due to export restrictions, compounding the losses.

Then in February came the freak rains. "The downpour first spoilt a lot of the potato crop that was almost ready for harvest. Prices of the water-soaked vegetable sank to Rs 100-150 per sack whereas it earlier sold for Rs 1,000. Many farmers have left the crop in the field to cut losses," says potato grower Pramod Singh.

Despite the rains, farmers had banked on returns from wheat, the main Rabi crop sown this year in 1.64 lakh hectares of the district's 2.54 lakh hectares of farmland.

The hailstorm buried that hope. "The first rains bent the crop. We still believed the harvest wouldn't be affected. More showers followed, accompanied by high winds. The stalks started touching the ground. The hail was the killer blow. The crop is flattened and the wheat heads lie wet in the ground," says Rajbir Singh, who owns 20 acres at Chaumuhan, all filled with destroyed wheat.

READ ALSO: 40-min hailstorm in Mathura leaves a trail of destruction

The unseasonal rain has been unrelenting. District agriculture department official Rakesh Babu said Mathura received 55mm rain in March, more than 11 times the normal 5.4mm. "Around 18mm more has fallen in the first six days of April, almost four times the month's average of 5mm," says Babu.

Rajbir demonstrates the effect of the sustained wet weather. He takes wheat kernels and rubs them with both hands. Pointing to the shrivelled grain in his hands, he says: "This grain is so light it'll go with the chaff while threshing. The rains first bloated the grain, which burst out of the kernel and got exposed to the sun, and shrivelled."

READ ALSO: Freak rains and govt apathy driving farmer suicides in UP

It's the same story in most villages of block Chaumuhan, which literally means four-headed — an allusion to Brahma — and boasts of having one of only two Brahma temples in the country.

Barring the rare fields sown very late in the season — where the wheat is more or less intact — farmers were trying to salvage whatever was left of the crop. "A farmer lives on hope. But much of the wheat that can be harvested wouldn't be fit to eat," says 66-year-old Keshav Dev, former Pradhan of Pilhora village.

"We've declared the district's wheat crop to be more than 50% affected," says Mathura DM Rajesh Kumar. "We're seeking a compensation of Rs 331 crore. Half of this will come from the Centre on the basis of relief of Rs 9,000 per hectare, which the state would equally match."

With PM Modi announcing an enhanced compensation package on Wednesday, Mathura farmers are now eligible for Rs 13,500 per hectare from the Centre. On the DM's orders, revenue officials are in villages, taking down farmers' bank account numbers and listing those who don't have accounts.

READ ALSO: Modi govt raises relief for disaster-hit from Rs 1.5L to Rs 4L

But farmers remain sceptical about relief reaching them. "After last season's drought, there was talk of compensation. None came our way. In 2006, the last time a hailstorm destroyed crops here, a compensation of Rs 3,000 per hectare was announced. We got Rs 1,000," says Rajbir.

A couple of kilometres away towards Vrindavan, Mathura MP Hema Malini stares out of hoardings, striking a dance pose with her daughters. These are promos for Hema's brainchild, Braj Mahostav, a cultural extravaganza featuring Bollywood stars. The festival was scheduled for April 11-12, but has been put off following farmer protests after last week's hailstorm. On Tuesday, she toured her constituency to assess the damage.

Farmers have been sounding the alarm over another looming crises — a shortage of fodder for livestock. "The fodder comes from the wheat stem. With much of the crop destroyed, I fear fodder would soon be selling for Rs 10 per kg," says Keshav Dev, pointing to a stack of rotten wheat stalk.

'Survivor' exposes red sanders 'encounter'

CHENNAI/ TIRUVANNAMALAI: Even as rights activists and Tamil Nadu politicians clamoured for a judicial inquiry into the gunning down of 20 woodcutters in the Seshachalam forest,a labourer called Sekar from Murugapandi village in Tiruvannamalai made a damning assertion: that he was the lone survivor among a group of eight men who were picked up by the Andhra police from a bus near the state border on Monday.

Several villages in Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts, from where a majority of the slain men hailed, are abuzz with the story of Sekar's narrow escape.

"When the bus neared Nagari in Chittoor district, policemen got into the bus and dragged away the seven labourers," a villager quoted Sekar as saying. Sekar said he slipped out of the bus at the next stop and returned to his village. He soon moved out his family and remains untraceable.

Several human rights activists, meanwhile, have vowed to expose the "massacre" by holding press meets in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. The burn marks on the slain labourers, the bullet injuries on many of their heads, and the curious case of the 80-odd other labourers who STF said escaped continue to raise unanswered questions.

On Wednesday, the Andhra Pradesh government released a video footage showing men moving inside the forest area. The authorities wanted to establish that the woodcutters were in the red sanders forests. Janardhan, a CPI leader in AP, meanwhile, termed the footage "false evidence," saying it was shot in Mamandur forest on April 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Reporters and independent observers who visited the spot said there were too many holes in the police story. Some bodies appeared to have been dragged from another place. None of the trees on the periphery of the clearing where the bodies were found had bullet marks. While the STF said there were more than 100 people carrying logs, only about 20 logs were recovered - as many as the men killed.

A relative of a victim who came to receive the body after postmortem at SVVR Hospital in Tirupati said that the woodcutters were picked up from a bus on Monday near Nagari by police personnel, something which Sekar too affirmed.

CPI executive member Janardhan said, "The relatives who came to receive the body have based the claims on the version by a worker who was in the bus with his wife. He was not picked up because the police thought he was not part of the group."

AP DGP J V Ramudu said the police had fired in self-defence. When reporters asked him about the burn injuries on the bodies and other points of suspicion, he said, "These are technical questions. We can give answers only after a thorough inquiry."

Flipkart to now sell grocery

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 08 April 2015 | 22.14

BENGALURU: Flipkart is poised to begin selling groceries from the second half of this year, sources said, entering a line of business which is crowded but also regarded as an attractive one for online retailers.

The service, most likely to be launched as an in-house offering rather than through an acquisition, will put the Bengaluru firm in direct competition with specialist portals such as Big-Basket, ZopNow and Local Baniya as grocery retail emerges as the latest front in the battle for leadership in India's fast-growing online retail industry.

"We already have the technology, warehousing and the brand, so most likely we will do this in-house in the second half of this year," a person with knowledge of the firm's plan told ET.

Flipkart declined comment for this report.
When it launches a grocery retail service, Flipkart will be following in the wake of rivals Amazon and Snapdeal, which have a head start in the segment. Last week, Amazon India said it is launching an express delivery platform in partnership with mom-and-pop stores, calling it Kirana Now. The company is currently running a pilot programme in Bengaluru.

However, some packaged foods and beverages have been available on the Amazon India portal since October 2014.

Snapdeal tied up with gourmet food retailer Godrej Nature's Basket in January to sell about 400 of its products online, with orders delivered the next day. The Delhibased company does not, as yet, offer on-demand grocery.

Experts are of the view that online grocery will become one of the top three most attractive segments for online retailers, after electronics and apparel.

"It (grocery) is too large a space for someone to miss," said Arvind Singhal, chairman of retail advisory firm Technopak.

"In the next six months, we will see online vertical players, horizontal players as well as offline players coming online to sell groceries," he predicted. The India Brand Equity Foundation estimates that food and grocery accounted for 69% of India's $490-billion (Rs 300-lakh crore) retail sector in 2013, followed by apparel at 8%.

Entering newer categories
According to people familiar with Flipkart's expansion plans, the addition of groceries on its portal is part of a larger strategy to include newer categories and business lines that will help boost revenue and chalk up profits.

All these moves are seen as a runup to an eventual public listing of the shares of the Bengaluru company within the next two years. "We will try and launch as many categories as possible and FMCG will be one of those categories," said Ankit Nagori, senior vicepresident in-charge of Flipkart's commerce platform. Other categories of interest would be home furnishing and furniture, he said.

At present, Flipkart offers over 80 categories of products through sellers on its marketplace, with fashion being the largest product line. The company said it sold gross merchandise worth $3 billion last year and aims at closing this year with $8 billion in sales.

There are already specialist grocery portals operating in India's ecommerce market, which is projected to reach $43 billion in value by 2019, according to Nomura.

BigBasket, the category leader, last week announced that it had carved out three new revenue streams in collaboration with local kirana stores, including on-demand express delivery, sale of private label staples to offline stores, and co-branded kirana pickup points. The entry of Flipkart and Amazon into this space will only validate the attractiveness of online grocery retail, according to investors.

"Groceries is a natural category for anyone to lust after, but the supply chain for groceries is very complex and has to be built city by city," said Sanjeev Aggarwal, cofounder of Helion Ventures, which has backed BigBasket.

Sex ratio kills honeymoon dream in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD/GANDHINAGAR: PM Narendra Modi may be the most famous 'bachelor' from Gujarat, but the state is home to 6.29 lakh unheralded men above 30 and 40 years who are unmarried — according to Census 2011. And the majority of them are not single by choice.

The number is a manifestation of the skewed sex ratio in Gujarat, which has 919 women per 1,000 men and only 886 girls per 1,000 boys in the 0-6 age group.

At the grassroots level, this imbalance keeps even the most eligible bachelors engaged in the fruitless mission to find brides. Take Haresh Patel, for instance. He is highly qualified and his name is laden with degrees: MSc, MEd, MPhil and PhD. The son of a landed man, Haresh earns well taking science and maths tuitions for HSC students. In short, he is the perfect bachelor; and may remain so.

"There is no marriage bureau where I have not registered, no mass marriage sammelan that I have not attended," says Haresh. "But the bride is still elusive. My agony is shared by at least 60-odd men in the village where there are 70-odd girls per 100 boys." The maths teacher's marital woes have made him crunch sex ratio numbers now!

Census data reveals that the number of unmarried men above 30 and 40 is three times higher than the 2.6 lakh figure of women in this age group who have never married. These figures discount the number of unmarried youth in their 20s who are struggling to find wives.

"Finding a bride has become a Herculean task. There are 40 bachelor boys on the wrong side of 30s in my village," says Bipin Patel (29) of Gadhan village in Prantij, Sabarkantha. Bipin's qualifications — MA, MEd, and MPhil — have thus far not helped him impress anyone in the tiny circle of available brides.

Bipin runs an electronics shop and earns Rs 25,000 per month. Earlier, families would find brides through agents from tribal areas but a number of cheating cases have made many wary. There have been instances of girls running away with jewellery and cash within days of marriage.

In Chandrala village in Gandhinagar, Natwar Patel has done the impossible: secure a bride for his 32-year-old son Gaurav, just two weeks ago. "I had no problem in getting my three daughters married, but arranging a match for my son sapped me," says Natwarbhai. He is now being hounded by families of 60-odd ageing bachelors in the village which want him to locate bahus.

Killing of 20 'smugglers': Naidu briefs Rajnath; protests in Andhra, Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu on Friday briefed Union home minister Rajnath Singh about the encounter of 20 people in the Chittoor district, Times Now reported.

NHRC chief KG Balakrishnan has also issued notice to the state government over the alleged encounter.

"Police will always justify their actions. We will probe the incident," NHRC chief KG Balakrishnan said.

Meanwhile fresh protests have erupted in Chittoor and Chennai against the killing of red sanders "smugglers".

In the biggest ever 'encounter' in south India, 20 men engaged by smugglers to cut down prized red sanders trees were shot dead by a joint team of special police and forest personnel deep inside the forests of Seshachalam in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Tuesday.

The alleged encounters took place at Eetagunta and Vacchinodu Banda hamlets in Chandragiri mandal when the red sanders gang challenged the joint task force during a combing operation. While nine died in the firing at Eetagunta, 11 were killed at Vacchinodu Banda. Most of them were wood-cutters from tribal areas in northern Tamil Nadu which border Chittoor. The incident sent shockwaves in political circles in AP and Tamil Nadu. APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy said his party would approach the National Human Rights Commission to probe the killings while TN chief minister O Panneerselvam expressed shock and sought a "speedy inquiry".

Though there have been several violent face-offs between police and red sanders smugglers, this is the first time so many casualties have been reported. Two years ago, two forest guards were stoned to death by a gang involved in felling red sanders. Following the incident, The AP government had formed the special task force to counter the menace.

Red sanders is a slowgrowing, highly prized variety of wood used to make furniture and musical instruments. Its street value can be as much as Rs 15,000 per kg. Categorised as a protected species of timber, its export and import is banned under the International Union for Conservation of Natural Flora and Fauna (IUCN). It's found in the forests around Nellore, Kadapa and Chittoor districts in AP and in a few pockets of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Dhoni is arrogant, will beg one day: Yograj Singh

NEW DELHI: Yograj Singh, father of Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, rued his son's exclusion from the ICC World Cup 2015 and blasted skipper MS Dhoni saying there will be a day when he will be left to beg and become penniless and would not get any favour.

"Dhoni was nothing. He has become a God in cricket just because of media. Media has crowned him as a great which he never deserved", Yograj told a news channel.

"There was a time when he had nothing but today he sits in front of media and rips off the media persons. He laughs at media who has given him so much hype. He laughs at the Indian people who clap when he scores a run," Yograj said.

"Honestly, if I were a media person, I would have slapped Dhoni right there", Yograj said.

Yuvraj, who helped India to win the 2011 World Cup, was ignored by the selectors for the World Cup.

Yuvraj took to Twitter to clarify his stand and distanced himself from his father remarks.

"Iv got nothing to do with statements coming out in the media ! As iv said before enjoyed playing under dhoni no issues at all," Yuvraj tweeted.

Yuvraj's father also compared Dhoni with Ramayana's mythological villain Ravana.

"Dhoni is arrogant. The way Ravana's proud came to an end, Dhoni will also suffer some day. He considers himself much above Ravana," Yuvraj's father said.

"I feel really ashamed when other cricketers come and tell me about Dhoni. Earlier, I used to think that people must be cribbing about Dhoni due to jealousy. But when the cricketers told me about him, I think I have never seen a terrible person like him ever in my life," he added.

Criticising Dhoni, Yograj said, "In the 2011 final, Yuvraj was going to bat but Dhoni stopped him and went to bat and became a hero. Why didn't he bat at No. 4 this time? Why did he go at No. 6? If he considers himself great, then he should have batted at No. 6 and guided India to a win against the Aussies."

Aviation minister Raju brags: 'I carry matchbox on flight, I am not frisked'

NEW DELHI: Union aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Tuesday stoked a controversy by admitting that he often carried matchboxes on flights.

And what's more, Ashok Gajapathi Raju went on to brag that being a minister he was not frisked any more and hence, he could now save his lighters and matchboxes.

The minister questioned how matchbox could become a security threat.

"You can't hijack a plane with a matchbox," the minister said, adding, "I haven't come across any incident worldwide where a matchbox had led to any threat."

"I am a heavy smoker so my matchboxes came along with me which earlier used to get confiscated," Ashok Gajapathi Raju said at a function of Bureau of civil aviation security at DRDO Bhavan.

Aviation rules do not allow anyone to carry matchbox on board flights.

However, the minister later speaking to reporters defended his comments.

The scope of CBI investigation in DK Ravi case cannot be decided by the state govt, CBI has reportedly said, adding, probe may be restricted to family only or may go up to govt or mafia.

The CBI has also objected to the three-month timeline set by the Karnataka government for the probe.

The investigative agency has told the government that it can't accept request for a time-bound probe.

Meanwhile, reacting to CBI's move, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said the state government will reissue the notification.

CBI sources said once fresh notification is received, the agency will examine the matter whether to takeover probe or not in the controversial death.

The death of Ravi, who took on land mafia and realtors, spiralled into a major controversy after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah initially refused to seek a CBI probe in the case. The case was being probed by Karnataka CID.

Opposition parties and activists then mounted pressure on the state government demanding that the investigation in the case be handed over to CBI.

The decision to transfer the probe to CBI come after Congress president Sonia Gandhi wrote in March to Ravi's wife promising a fair and transparent probe into the incident.

This came after Ravi's mother reportedly wrote an open letter to her seeking an impartial probe.
According to social activist and whistleblower Ganesh S Koundiny DK Ravi was planning raids on some big developers to unearth commercial tax evasion.

Take-home salaries of govt employees may rise as mandatory health insurance to go

NEW DELHI: Take-home salaries of millions of workers could rise with the government moving to free employees from compulsory coverage in a state-run healthcare programme that costs them 6.5% on a cost to company basis, and give them the choice to buy a health insurance product from an insurance firm instead.

The government has called a meeting of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on Tuesday to approve amendments to this effect in the ESI Act of 1948, India's first social security legislation. If ratified, the change could throw up a major opportunity for the country's $2 billion health insurance business. Finance minister Arun Jaitley had declared the government's intent to allow employees to exercise their individual choice in health insurance in his Budget speech.

READ ALSO: Bank staffers shouldn't expect major salary hike, Prakash Javadekar says

"We intend to bring amending legislation in this regard, after stakeholder consultation," he had said. "We have proposed adding two new sections to the law that gives employees a one-time option to opt for a health insurance product regulated by the IRDA. Employers would have to submit proof of such alternate coverage," said a senior government official, adding that workers would be allowed to return to the ESI fold if they are not satisfied with the health insurance coverage. "However, such aswitch-back to the scheme would be allowed only once.

We are also putting in a safeguard, so that employers can't force workers to opt for either the ESI or a health insurance product as a pre-condition for employment," he added. About 60% of India's organized sector workforce or 1.74 crore employees are covered by the ESIC, which offers medical care to them and their dependents along with unemployment benefits in case of disablement or occupational accidents, including fatal ones. The law mandates employers to contribute 4.75% of an employees' gross salary (up to Rs 15,000 per month) with a 1.75% matching premium payment from employees. In return, members get access to ESIC's 151 hospitals and 1,380 dispensaries around the country.

Trade unions are annoyed with the haste in which the corporation meeting has been scheduled. "We got a notice about the meeting on April 2, after which there have been a slew of government holidays. Moreover, any amendments to the law are usually debated by our board first. This is the first time that the government is bringing amendments to the table," said the general secretary of a major trade union, who is on the ESIC board.
