Indian to head world’s top liquor company

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 09 Mei 2013 | 22.14

The $23-billion maker of Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Captain Morgan and vaunted single malts named Menezes successor to its long-serving superstar CEO Paul Walsh who plans to step down next month, earlier than expected.

Boby Kurian & Reeba Zachariah, TNN | May 8, 2013, 01.28AM IST

MUMBAI: India-born Ivan Menezes is the new CEO of Diageo, the world's largest drinks company-a development that reinforces the growing trend of Indians heading high-profile global corporate giants.

The $23-billion maker of Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Captain Morgan and vaunted single malts named Menezes successor to its long-serving superstar CEO Paul Walsh who plans to step down next month, earlier than expected. Younger brother of former Citibank chairman and CEO Victor Menezes, Ivan was front-runner for the top job after his elevation as chief operating officer last year. It comes six months after he led an ambitious $2.6 billion takeover of Vijay Mallya's United Spirits Ltd (USL), India's largest liquor company.

The 52 year-old Menezes-an MBA from Kellogg and IIM-A and a graduate of St Stephen's-has an impressive peer group of India-origin CEOs like Anshu Jain (Deutsche Bank), Indira Nooyi (PepsiCo), Ajay Banga (MasterCard) and Rakesh Kapoor (Reckitt Benckiser) steering influential global brands. Even the more conservative European corporations have started handing over reins to Indians as economic growth shifts to the East.

Diageo surprised everyone with the sudden announcement since Walsh was tipped to continue till mid-2014. But Diageo's aggressive push into emerging markets, through big acquisitions, prompted Walsh, one of London's longest-running CEOs, to hand over the job from July 1 this year.

"We are delighted to have a leader of Ivan's talents and global experience to succeed Paul Walsh. The handover is being made at a time when the business is strong and Ivan takes on the role of CEO at an exciting stage of the company's global development," said Diageo chairman Franz B Humer.

USL chairman Vijay Mallya said he had "the greatest admiration" for Menezes who called him to convey the good news. "I am happy for a friend who has done well. It was Ivan and I who first started talking about a deal which has created significant value for United Spirits shareholders," Mallya told TOI.

The USL stock has soared 80% since the Diageo takeover announcement in November last year-from Rs 1,350 to Tuesday's record high closing of Rs 2,347.

Diageo was formed when Guinness merged with London-based property conglomerate Grand Metropolitan in 1997, the year Menezes boarded the company. The FTSE-100 giant subsequently sold assets like Pillsbury and Burger King to emerge as a focused alcoholic beverages behemoth and owner of single malts like Talisker, Lagavulin, Cragganmore and Caol Ila.

Walsh and Menezes moved Diageo into emerging markets with never before aggression as analysts and shareholders raised concerns about the company trailing French rival Pernod Ricard in key growth geographies like China and India. Diageo embarked on a slew of acquisitions such as Turkey's Mey Icki for $2.1 billion and Brazil's largest cachaca maker Ypioca for $600 million; it also took controlling interest in Quanxing, which owns ShuiJingFang, one of China's best-known baijiu spirits.

Analysts said the biggest challenge Menezes faces will be to navigate Diageo through changing consumer tastes in slowing established markets, while mopping up growth numbers from markets like India, China and Brazil. By 2015, about half of Diageo's revenues are expected to come from emerging markets.

Over 18,000 Indians want to leave Saudi Arabia, seek emergency certificate

HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI: India could witness large-scale reverse migration in the coming months as the three-month grace period given by the Saudi Arabian government for implementation of the Nitaqat law comes to an end soon.

Over 18,000 Indians have already approached the Indian Embassy in Riyadh seeking an Emergency Certificate (EC) to leave Saudi Arabia amid concerns about possible job losses. The Indian workers have applied for issuance of EC to leave the country as they had given their passports to the sponsors, overseas Indian affairs minister Vayalar Ravi told Parliament on Wednesday.

Over two million Indians, including many from Hyderabad's Old City localities, are currently working in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government was implementing the Nitaqat law to cut unemployment in the country mandating that one Saudi national be employed for every 10 expatriate workers.

There has been widespread perception that the new policy will lead to denial of job opportunities for a large number of Indians working there.

Ravi said as per the Indian Mission in Riyadh, the increase in the number of applications seeking the EC was due to Saudi authorities' campaign against foreign workers staying in the country without fulfilling laid down conditions and not due to Nitaqat. "This drive affects not only illegal workers from India, but also from all countries where immigrant workers have come to Saudi Arabia," he said.

A delegation led by Ravi had visited the Gulf nation two weeks ago during which it expressed India's concern about the Nitaqat law. During the talks, both the sides had agreed to set up a joint working group to address "all immediate problems" facing the Indian community including issues related to overstaying Indian workers and the new labour law.

Ravi said government has waived the fee of seven Saudi riyals for contribution to the Indian Community Welfare Fund by those who applied for the EC and even asked the Embassy to bear processing cost of 40 Saudi riyals (Rs 600) per application.

He said government has asked the Mission to provide temporary accommodation and food to the needy Indians in Saudi Arabia.

More than 200,000 foreigners have been deported from Saudi Arabia over the past few months as part of labour market reforms aimed at putting more Saudi nationals into private sector jobs, where they now make up only a tenth of the workforce.

The joint group also discussed re-employment of those overstaying Indian workers in Saudi Arabia by availing the facilities offered by the ministry of labour, including services of the newly set up mega-recruiting companies.

The authorities are holding a meeting at the PGI director's office to discuss the modalities of sending his body.

"We will be able to take a decision soon in this regard. The body will be handed over as per the law in Jammu and Kashmir as Sanaullah was a convict from there, " Sharma said.

'Shocked' BJP admits Yeddyurappa's exit led to Karnataka rout

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 08 Mei 2013 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: BJP on Wednesday said it was "shocked, upset and unhappy" about the defeat in the Karnataka assembly elections and conceded that BS Yeddyurappa's exit was a factor in the rout.

"We are shocked. We are upset and unhappy about the loss. There is a combination of several factors that led to the fall of morale of the cadre," BJP general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He said the party will analyse the cause of the loss and why it happened.

Another senior party leader Ravishankar Prasad said former party leader B S Yeddyurappa took away "good portion of our votes".

However, he defended the decision on distancing from Yeddyurappa as there was "serious issue of corruption and Lokayukta also took cognizance".

The party tried its best to accomodate Yeddyurappa but did not accede to "Yeddyurappa's my way or highway attitude".

"Certain issues are non-negotiable and corruption is one such issue," he said adding, "since 1989, one who wins Karnataka loses Lok Sabha. So I am sure we will win Lok Sabha," he said.

Karnataka election results: Congress wins, BJP suffers humiliating defeat

BANGALORE: BJP on Wednesday suffered a humiliating defeat in the Karnataka assembly elections with the Congress wresting power after a gap of seven years.

Hit by the exit of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and the image of corruption during its tenure in the first government in the south, the party has won 16 seats and was leading in just 23 seats in the 224-member Assembly.

JD(S) and BJP were involved in a close race to wrest the main opposition status.

Riding the anti-incumbency wave, Congress wrested its old southern fort by putting up an impressive show and crossed the half-way mark of 113. The party has won 62 seats and was leading in 58.

The JD(S) led by H D Deve Gowda won 17 seats and was ahead in 22 seats.

The SP is leading on one seat while 'Others' have won five seats and leading in 18.

The fledgling Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) floated by Yeddyurappa, who achieved his immediate task of causing damage to the BJP, won one seat and could establish leads in only eight seats. Yeddyurappa won from Shikaripura by over 15,000 votes.

In the elections five years ago when BJP stormed to power for the first time in a southern state on its own, the party had won 110 seats against Congress' 80 and JD(S) 28. In the 224-member house, 113 seats would be required for majority. Polling was held in 223 segments, with the one in Periyapatna in Mysore district put off to May 28 following death of BJP candidate.

Significantly, KJP has damaged the prospects of the BJP in many constituencies, eating into its votes.

Coalgate: SC calls CBI a caged parrot, slams govt's interference

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has questioned the credibility of CBI probe into the coal scam and has asked for a thorough and qualitative investigation.

Expressing strong displeasure at govt's interference in the Coalgate probe report, the SC said, ''the heart of the report was changed on the suggestions of the govt officials."

Raising questions on the independence of CBI, the apex court called it a 'caged parrot speaking in its master's voice'.

The apex court made a scathing comment on the functioning of the investigating agency and said, "It's a sordid saga that there are many masters and one parrot."

Asking the govt to make CBI impartial, the apex court said it needs to be ensured that the CBI functions free of all external pressures.

If the CBI is not made independent, we will step in, the SC observed.

Job of CBI is not to interact with government officials but to interrogate to find the truth, the SC said.

CBI must know how to stand up against all pulls and pressures by government and its officials, the judges remarked.

Commenting on law minister Ashwani Kumar's role, the apex court said that a minister can ask for a report but can't interfere with the CBI probe.

The court questioned how the CBI could have regular interactions with the ministry officials.

Slamming the action of joint secretaries who saw the probe report, the SC said, What business does the two joint secretaries have in visiting the CBI office?

Defending his role, Attorney General GE Vahanvati said, "My meeting with CBI officials took place only on suggestions of the law minister."

I have neither asked nor got CBI's probe report in coal scam, the Attorney General said.

The apex court observations came on CBI director Ranjit Sinha's second affidavit filed on Monday, stating that law minister Ashwani Kumar and senior officials of the PMO and coal ministry had made changes in the Colagate probe report.

Ranjit Sinha in his nine-page affidavit to SC had given details of series of meetings with Ashwani Kumar, Vahanvati, Additional Solicitor General Haren Raval and Shatrughna Singh and A K Bhalla, joint secretaries of the PMO and the coal ministry during which changes in the probe reports were suggested and made by them.

I had a great desire to have a child with Aamir: Kiran Rao

Kiran Rao, 39, may have married one of the most powerful men in Bollywood, but she still remains a simple, happy and self-reliant person just as she was brought up to be. Over an hour-long conversation, she opens up to TOI about her film school 'Lagaan', her attraction to Aamir Khan and how Azaad has changed her life. Excerpts:

Let's talk about your childhood?

I was born in Bangalore but grew up in Kolkata and I read, write and speak Bengali. My dad was an engineer and worked for the steel industry. I loved school (Loreto House) and had a really happy childhood. We were quite a middle class family, but we had access to all the good things in life, be it books or access to a club. I was outgoing and did a lot of elocution, singing and theatre. We were always taught to enjoy small things and went for a lot of family holidays in a train lugging in a second-class compartment, enjoying the lndscape of Bihar or climbing up the Himalayas. I have memories of my father jumping out of a train and buying us hot pooris and aloo on a patta or buying guavas for us. My dad would always bring back a book from anywhere he went and so for me the treat was always a new Tintin. Another ritual was the Friday night movie at the Saturday Club, where we would have our mutton samosas with tea. My parents always had this great love for life.

How did you come to Mumbai?

After my 12th, my parents moved to Bangalore while I moved to Mumbai to study Economics at Sophia College. Much unlike other girls who managed to evade the curfew and organised the slips to get out of college, we would attend college and were interested in academics. We were actually quite seedha and would only sneak out to watch plays standing at the back at Sophia and go to Fort in a bus to the second-hand bookshop, buying a guava on the way. While I rarely watched films and was not interested in them, my obsession was to be useful to society and I wanted to make a documentary.

I then did my masters in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. I started supporting myself financially and worked as an RJ at AIR and did the midnight show. If you did that show, you were forced to do the religious morning show which was quite a task, but the good thing was they picked and dropped you from home. Jamia was a great place to learn about life and it became clear to me that I wanted to direct. Though I adored Delhi, Mumbai was in my veins and I felt connected to this city and had to come back.

How did you get into films?

I wanted to be an assistant director (AD). My ex-boyfriend from Bangalore was working in advertising and told me about Shamin Desai, the ad filmmaker who was looking for people. I sent my application to Shamin and started assisting him at 10K per month and that was big money in 1998. It was a great experience, but I quit in a year hoping to make my own film. I was idle when Reema Kagti, my senior from college, asked me if I would like to be the third AD on Lagaan in which she was the second AD. Lagaan became my film school. My job was to handle the actors — 11 Indians, 11 Britishers and 1,500 villagers.

The experience was insightful, thankless and frustrating but I learnt how to deal with people. My job was to ensure that the talent went through their hair, makeup and wardrobe to be ready for call time. You have to see the call sheet of Lagaan to believe it as it had so many people that you had to be a champion of scheduling to manage that. I spent 90% of my time in the makeup room, receiving and sending people and read so many books. I worked really hard and made great friends. I met Aamir though I did not know him. His friends were more the seniors like Ashutosh Gowariker, whereas our group was this younger lot of ADs. We would have a party every weekend where Aamir would drop by but not drink as he started drinking late at the age of 36. He was a down-to-earth producer and both he and Reena managed the crew so well in keeping them away from their families for six months. After Lagaan, I assisted Mira Nair in Monsoon Wedding.

What was Reena like as a producer?

My impression of her then was she was straightforward, warm and empathetic. She always had time to hear us out and was a team player.

How did you start dating Aamir?

I first met Aamir when we were going on a recce on a bus to Bhuj and he came and met us and introduced himself. I just felt he was quite normal. During Lagaan, I was a bit nervous as he was a big star and kept my distance. Also, I was seeing someone while Lagaan was on. I again met him briefly with his family during Dil Chahta Hai. They seemed so elegant and warm. Now that I have got to know them, my first impression was right and I absolutely adore his sisters and mother. By 2003, he and Reena had divorced. He started seeing someone else and we again connected on the set of an ad commercial that he was doing with Ashutosh Gowariker that I was assisting on. We hung out a lot together and became 2 am friends.

We started seeing each other in 2004. Initially, I wasn't sure that I could be friends with a superstar. But in so many ways he is such a grounded person that in four minutes of speaking to him, you forget that he is a star. We like each others company and our friendship is still the basis of our relationship. I moved in with him and neither of us was hung up on marriage. After a year of living together, we decided to get married for two reasons. One, I wanted my parents to feel comfortable and also being the celebrity he is it was easier to just be legally conjoined as it takes the greyness out of the picture. Also, as a girlfriend, people did not know how to treat me. For instance if you go to an event as a wife you are treated a certain way but as a partner, they don't know what to do with you.

What attracted you to Aamir?

I was attracted to his sense of humour and his knowledge and the way he looks at things. What most keeps us together is our value system. For instance, both of us are not very interested in our work and enjoy that. Both of us have a sense of rooting in community and have a strong civic sense and being a part of civil society. We both get affected by a certain kind of politics or intolerance. Aamir is able to get lost in what he is doing, which I am unable to. You can be sitting in front of him and can be talking to him and he is able to think his thoughts forgetting that you are there which is incredibly frustrating for a partner.

On the other hand, I am extremely considerate and would not let anyone talk to me without them having my full attention. I have calmed down now but was very talkative earlier. He likes more one-on-one company and can go hours without talking. I am not driven and have a tendency to procrastinate and am able to do whatever I want to do but it is with a little bit of meandering. Aamir helped me clarify my creative ideas and open up my mind. I am quite lucky to have worked with him in many projects. He has a unique head. For one, he has unbelievable passion. He just loves the world of storytelling. But it's also supported by an unusual mind for cinema. His left and right brain is in perfect unity. One big reason his head is valued is because he is able to listen to a story like an audience and can find a great story idea irrespective of how badly it may is narrated. It is his gift and is the reason of his success. He doesn't do a film to make it a hit, but does it as he believes that it is a story that must be told. He is driven and intense but is also fun and is one of the most relaxed people I know.

Were you insecure about having a surrogate baby?

The insecurity is always at the back of your mind till you don't get your baby in your hand, as there is a bill but no law to secure you. So, while the surrogate mother signs a contract, she could decide to not honour it. My doctor Feroza Parkeh, whom I had met at Mukesh and Nita's house, was my angel. Your doctor is your touch with your baby and we implicitly trusted her. If I did not have Feroza in my life, I would not have had Azaad. I keep thinking it was a miracle. I am not really maternal but had a great desire to have a child with Aamir. I am obsessed with Azaad and wonder what I was doing before him. While for the first ten months I did everything for him, I have now slowly extricated myself and have started thinking on what I want to direct next, though I have never been in a hurry.

NSUI leader Suraj Thakur suspended for allegedly dancing naked at a party in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Suraj Singh Thakur, the Mumbai chief of National Students Union of India (NSUI), has been suspended for allegedly dancing naked at a party function in the Mumbai suburb of Kandivili last month.

Reports on Tuesday stated that Thakur was drunk during a function and was caught on camera allegedly dancing naked at the NSUI camp held in Kandivili on April 14.

Thakur, who had been re-elected as NSUI president in December 2012, was suspended on Monday after the matter came to fore.

However, it is still unclear as to what made Thakur and two other NSUI office bearers do it.

Sources claim that there may have been a ragging of sorts with seniors asking the new entrants to button down.

The video of Thakur allegedly dancing naked was uploaded on YouTube and was trending, but it has now been removed from the website.

Beside Thakur, the NSUI national president has also suspended two other office bearers, who were also drunk at that time and caught shaking their leg with him.

Thakur shot to fame after he led vociferous protests against the book by Rajiv Gandhi's alleged killer A G Perarivalan in May 2011.

The NSUI is the students' wing of the Congress and the party has taken the matter very seriously. According to reports, Suraj Singh Thakur and two other NSUI office bearers could be expelled from the organisation after proper verification of the matter.

Turnover of Bansal sons' firm goes from 0 to Rs 152 crore in 5 years

Written By Unknown on Senin, 06 Mei 2013 | 22.14

CHANDIGARH: Himachal Pradesh-based Theon Pharmaceuticals Ltd, owned by railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal's wife, Madhu, and sons, Amit and Manish, saw its turnover rise from zero to Rs 152 crore - period that also saw Bansal's political graph soaring.

Theon Pharmaceuticals, which was established in 2005 and had declared zero turnover in its balance sheet in 2007, notched Rs 152 crore in 2012 by when Bansal had held Union ministry portfolios of parliamentary affairs, water resources, going on to become the railway minister.

Documents with the registrar of companies (RoC) in Chandigarh reveal Theon showed a steady rise in this period, beginning 2008, when it registered a turnover of Rs 15.35 crore, to 2009 when it made Rs 41 crore. By 2010, its turnover was Rs 62 crore, which rose to Rs 105 crore in 2011, and recorded Rs 152 crore in the last fiscal. Bansal's sons, Amit and Manish, took control of Theon Pharmaceuticals as directors in 2007.

The documents, in possession of TOI, also reveal that Theon, a company that manufactures antacids, antidepressants and antidiabetics in Himachal Pradesh's Baddi town, and is registered in Sector 26 Grain Market of Chandigarh, has shown phenomenal increase in its net profit from Rs 28 lakh in 2008 to Rs 19.5 crore in 2012.

TOI had reported on Sunday that CBI may seek clarification from Bansal's two sons Amit and Manish, and at least one more nephew would be under scrutiny in connection with the bribery case.

Bansal's sons own four companies, Theon Pharmaceuticals Lt, Iva Healthcare Ltd, Isis Packaging Ltd and Bansi Raunaq Energy Ltd. Bansal had become Union parliamentary affairs minister in UPA-2 in 2009.

The RoC documents, however, do not mention details of companies with which Theon held its business transactions even as the clients are shown as Cipla, Ranbaxy, Piramal, Mankind and Torrent. Theon's net worth, according to 2012-13 annual returns, stands at Rs 37 crore.

Also, as Amit and Manish are actively involved in the pharma company's daily operations, it's the minister's wife Madhu Bansal who is the largest shareholder with 4,06,500 shares in Theon. According to RoC documents, Madhu is also a director at Iva healthcare Private Ltd.

Amit, who is also a director of Delhi Public School in Mohali, is the second largest shareholder with 4,02,000 shares. In 2010, Amit's wife Monika was also made a shareholder with 1,05,000 shares in Theon.

CBI files fresh affidavit in Supreme Court on coal scam

NEW DELHI: The CBI director on Monday admitted before the Supreme Court that certain changes were made in the Coalgate draft report on suggestions given by Union law minister Ashwani Kumar, Attorney General G E Vanahvati and the officials of PMO and coal ministry.

In its fresh nine-page affidavit filed before the apex court, CBI chief Ranjit Sinha gave details of the meetings which took place between the officials of the probe agency, the law minister, AG, then Additional Solicitor General Harin Raval and officials of PMO and coal ministry.

The submission made by Sinha contradicts the stand taken by the law minister and AG, who had refuted the allegation that they had suggested changes in the draft report. The affidavit also states some lines were deleted at the behest of the PMO and the law minister.

The affidavit said the changes made in the draft report on the suggestion of the law minister and Vanahvati have "neither altered the report nor shifted the focus of inquiries in any manner".

Sinha also said that "no names of suspects or accused were removed from the status report and also that no suspect or accused was let off in the process."

"Majority of these changes were done by my officers in order to refine the report either on their own or in consultation with the ASG (Raval) and his assisting advocate or by law minister. Besides, a few changes were also done on the suggestion of AG and officials of PMO and coal ministry," Sinha said.

The director, however, said, "It is difficult at this stage to attribute each change to a particular person with certainty.

The CBI chief in his affidavit also referred to certain changes made in the final status report on the suggestion of the law minister, the AG, and the officials of PMO and coal ministry.

"The tentative finding about non-existence of a system regarding allocation of specific weightage/ points was deleted at the instance of the officials of PMO and coal ministry.

"The other tentative findings about non-preparation of broadsheet or chart by the screening committee to the best of my recollection was deleted by the law minister," the affidavit said.

The affidavit also says, "These changes made by the law minister, PMO and coal ministry officials were accepted by the CBI as they pertained to its tentative findings."

It further says that "the deletion of a sentence about the scope of inquiry with respect to illegalities of allocation while the amendment to law was in process, was done by law minister."

The CBI affidavit also names officials of PMO and the coal ministry, who had perused the draft report and on whose suggestions changes were made in it.

Sinha said Shatrughan Singh and A K Bhalla, the joint secretaries in PMO and ministry of coal respectively were "in regular interaction" with his officers with regard to ongoing inquiry in the coal scam.

"It is submitted that sharing of status report with the persons mentioned above and the consequent changes therein have neither altered the central theme of the report nor shifted the focus of the inquiry or investigation in any manner," the affidavit said.

"The central theme of the status report had not changed post meetings. There were no deletions of any evidence against any suspect or accused nor were any let off," the affidavit said.

Extending unconditional apology for any inadvertent omission or commission, Ranjit Sinha said there is nothing in the CBI manual to guide whether status reports in an ongoing investigation in a sub-judice matter are to be shared with others.

"The departmental circular and government instructions are also silent on this point," Sinha said, while answering a specific question posed by the apex court on the last hearing as to on what basis the law minister and officials were entitled to go through CBI status report.

He also said there are no minutes of the meetings which took place with the law minister and officials of PMO and coal ministry and details of his affidavit "are based on best recollection of my memory and of my officers".

The affidavit also said that there was no intention to suppress from the Supreme Court the fact that the draft report was shared with the political executive and government officials.

"Since it was our honest and bonafide belief that there was no specific direction on this issue by this court, it did not occur to us that the fact ought to be brought to the notice of this court.

"It is humbly submitted that there was no intention whatsoever to suppress this fact from this court," he said.

The CBI director also made it clear that Raval had made a statement on his own that the status report was not shared with anyone.

Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Teja in Banjara Hills roadside brawl

HYDERABAD: Actor and Union minister Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan Teja was embroiled in a roadside brawl on Sunday. The actor's bodyguards reportedly assaulted a software engineer for not giving way to his Aston Martin on the busy Road Number 1, Banjara Hills on Sunday afternoon. However, police did not register any case as they claimed the victim did not lodge a complaint.

The road rage incident happened near GVK Mall on Road Number 1, Banjara Hills at 2.30 pm when Ram Charan Teja was driving from Taj Krishna junction to Nagarjuna Circle.

According to police, Ram Charan's Aston Martin V8 Vantage was 'obstructed' near GVK Mall rotary by a Maruti Alto in which software engineers Phaneesh of Kondapur and Kalyan of Uppal were travelling. The techies, employees of Genpact, were heading to Punjagutta from Kondapur in Kalyan's Alto.

Ram Charan Teja was furious with the techies for not giving him way despite honking several times. As soon as he got a small passage, the actor steered past the Alto and intercepted it near the rotary opposite GVK Mall. As the vehicles were parked to the extreme left of the road, traffic was not affected on the busy road.

"We heard the driver of the luxury car behind us honking, but due to traffic congestion, Kalyan could not give way. A minute later, the other vehicle overtook us and blocked our way," Phaneesh told media personnel before entering the Banjara Hills police station.

When the sports car driver rolled down the window glass, the techies realised that it was Ram Charan Teja. "The actor had an argument with us thinking that we deliberately blocked his way. While we were explaining to him that we had not done it deliberately, Ram Charan called up his bodyguards over the phone. Within a few minutes, four of them arrived at the spot in a vehicle and one of them punched me in the face," Phaneesh said.

Delhi-based Afghan woman shortlisted for 'world's best job'

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 05 Mei 2013 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: Moska Najib does not fit in with any stereotype of an Afghan woman. The 29-year-old documentary filmmaker is among the top 25 shortlisted for one of the six 'best jobs in the world' — lifestyle photographer in Melbourne. She is the only Afghan to beat 600,000 applicants in the race. If she wins the job, she will earn Australian $100,000 (around Rs 55 lakh) in six months.

"An Afghan has a lot of limitations while applying for a visa or a contest. The minute you say you are an Afghan, there are a lot of queries, your background (is checked). And, many of these competitions are geared towards a Western audience," says Moska.

This was open to all nationalities. Moska, a former BBC journalist, decided to apply. The job, capturing life in the south-eastern Australian state Victoria in photographs, films and writing, is exciting. It entails surfing, skiing, rappelling, winemaking and researching penguins at Phillip Island — everything one fancies on an adventure holiday.

Photography for Afghan women, whose subservience is often attributed to culture, is a challenge. For globetrotter Moska (Pushtoo for muskaan meaning smile) it's passion.

She was recently in Kolkata photographing Afghans, called Kabuliwallas, in the 21st century. "The street in Kolkata where many of them live looks like that in Kabul."

While shooting in Kolkata, she spotted the advertisement for the "best jobs" on Facebook.

In 2009, the "Best Job in The World" was for a caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef islands. This year, there are six world's "best jobs" — chief funster, outback adventurer, park ranger, wildlife caretaker, lifestyle photographer and taste master — each with an Australian $100, 000 package for six months.

"I had only five days to apply," says Moska. She rushed to Old Delhi to shoot a 30-second video to explain why she is the best person for the job. "I identify very much with Old Delhi. It's as if time has stood still here. One learns to pause and stay," says Moska.

Moska, who lives with her mother, came here when she was eight years and has not been able to return home in war-ravaged Kabul since. She lost many of her relatives, including those she held dear. "My father was amazing. I was very close to him. He had an aura and exuded confidence. He was a brave man and made others around him feel brave," she says.

Moska has fond memories of her childhood in Kabul. "As an Afghan away from home, I'm very protective of memories of growing up in Kabul," she says.

Through her participation in the 'best job' contest, she wants to spread a message among displaced Afghans across the world — of hope and optimism.

India warns US of move to revive Khalistan through Sikh caucus

WASHINGTON: Aghast at the role of pro-Khalistan elements in the launch of a Sikh Congressional Caucus last week, the Indian government has cautioned the Obama administration and US lawmakers who joined the group against helping revive what was a violent separatist affair that has largely faded away.

Indian officials have been briefing US lawmakers about the almost-defunct movement and its bloody history after discovering that the principal movers of the Sikh caucus were Khalistani activists trying to revive separatist sentiments. The Indian effort to sensitize lawmakers to New Delhi's concerns began even before the launch of the caucus, but much to the Indian embassy's surprise and dismay, pro-Khalistani Sikhs succeeded in getting the caucus off the ground. In the process, they are said to have sidelined mainstream nationalist Sikhs.

Some 30 US lawmakers, many of them first time legislators not aware of the violent history and background of the Khalistan issue, have signed up for the Sikh Caucus, which is believed to the first ethnic and religion-based caucus on the Hill. But what has distressed New Delhi is that signatories include veteran lawmakers such as Frank Pallone, a New Jersey democrat who has been a long-time friend of India and a leading member of the India Caucus.

Indian officials surmise that Pallone and many others have been misled by the separatists into believing that they were backing a besieged group that was fighting ethnic profiling and racial discrimination, particularly after the Oak Creek shooting in Wisconsin in which a white supremacist killed six people in a Sikh Gurdwara. American Sikhs have also been fighting employment bias and discrimination in military against turbaned enlisters.

While Indian officials acknowledge that many of the Sikh grievances are legitimate, they say the issues are being used as a cover for potentially reinvigorating the Khalistan movement. Although no mention was made of Khalistan at the launch of the caucus, some prime movers behind the caucus did not hide their pro-Khalistani affiliation.

Indian officials are cautioning their US counterparts of such murky associations, particularly in the context of the Boston bombing in which Chechen separatist sympathisers who were seemingly integrated into American society, carried out terrorist attacks inside the US. They are concerned that unbridled Khalistani activism in the U.S could come to haunt New Delhi later on. While many of the Sikh grievances are real and deserve attention, the Indian government, currently headed by a Sikh, seems to believe these are best lobbied by the India caucus rather than a separate ethno-religious caucus.

What set alarm bells ringing was the discovery that one of the principal movers of the Sikh caucus is an associate of Khalid Awan, a Pakistan-Canadian who has been convicted for providing material support and resources to the Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) and related terrorism charges and is serving time in a U.S prison. The same principal was also involved in a bank robbery in Ludhiana.

In a little-reported trial of Awan, the US government offered recordings of his prison telephone calls to Paramjit Singh Panjwar in Pakistan, in which Awan spoke of recruiting new members for the KCF and admitted having had sent hundreds of thousands of dollars to KCF in the past. A US district court later determined that Awan's crimes were "intended to promote federal crimes of terrorism," and imposed on him a sentence of 14 years' imprisonment, which he is serving in Terra Haute, Indiana.

The Indian alert is believed to have had a salutary effect on at least one lawmaker, Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera, who is said to have backed out of joining the caucus. Bera's 7th Congressional district in California surrounding Sacramento has a large Sikh population, and word among Sikh activists initially was that he would sign up. Indian officials believe many other lawmakers have joined the caucus for similar reasons in a state where there are many wealthy Sikhs, only some of who still suffer from the Khalistan hangover.

Israeli warplanes strike Syria, target Iranian missiles

BREIRUT: Israeli warplanes struck areas in and around the Syrian capital on Sunday, setting off a series of explosions as they targeted a shipment of highly accurate, Iranian-made guided missiles believed to be on their way to Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group, officials and activists said.

The attack, the second in three days, signaled a sharp escalation of Israel's involvement in Syria's bloody civil war. Syrian state media reported that Israeli missiles struck a military and scientific research center near Damascus and caused casualties.

An intelligence official in the Middle East, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to disclose information about a secret military operation to the media, confirmed that Israel launched an airstrike in the Syrian capital early Sunday but did not give more precise details about the location. The target was Fateh-110 missiles, which have precision guidance systems with better aim than anything Hezbollah is known to have in its arsenal, the official told The Associated Press.

The airstrikes come as Washington considers how to respond to indications that the Syrian regime may have used chemical weapons in its civil war. President Barack Obama has described the use of such weapons as a "red line," and the administration is weighing its options _ including possible military action.

Iran, a close ally of the Assad regime, condemned the airstrikes but gave no other hints of a possible stronger response from Tehran.

Israel has said it wants to stay out of the Syrian war, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly stated the Jewish state would be prepared to take military action to prevent sophisticated weapons from flowing from Syria to Hezbollah or other extremist groups.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in mid-2006 that ended in a stalemate.

Syria's state news agency SANA reported that explosions went off at the Jamraya military and scientific research center near Damascus and said "initial reports point to these explosions being a result of Israeli missiles." SANA said there were casualties but did not give a number.

Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said the strikes occurred around 3 a.m. "Damascus shook. The explosion was very, very strong," said al-Shami adding that one of the attacks occurred near the capital's Qasioun mountain that overlooks Damascus.

He said the raid near Qasioun targeted a military position for the elite Republican Guards that is in charge of protecting Damascus, President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

Mohammed Saeed, another activist who lives in the Damascus suburb of Douma, said "the explosions were so strong that earth shook under us." He said the smell of the fire caused by the air raid near Qasioun could be felt miles away.

There has been no official statement from the Syrian military.

The strikes put the Assad regime in a tricky position. If it fails to respond, it looks weak and leaves itself open to such airstrikes becoming a common occurrence. But if it retaliates militarily against Israel, it risks dragging the Jewish state and its powerful military into a broader conflict.

After the airstrikes overnight, Israel's military on Saturday deployed two batteries of its Iron Dome rocket defense system to the country's north. It described the move as part of "ongoing situational assessments."

The Iron Dome protects against short-range rockets. Hezbollah fired thousands of rockets at Israel during the 2006 war, while Israeli warplanes destroyed large areas of south Lebanon.

Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israel's military intelligence, said the strike is a signal to Syria's ally, Tehran, that Israel is serious about the red lines it has set.

"Syria is a very important part in the front that Iran has built. Iran is testing Israel and the U.S. determination in the facing of red lines and what it sees is in clarifies to it that at least some of the players, when they define red lines and they are crossed, take it seriously," he told Army Radio.

In Tehran, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast condemned an Israeli airstrike against Syria and urged countries in the region to remain united against Israel, according to the semiofficial Fars news agency. The brief statement gave no details.

The Fateh-110, or Conqueror, is a short-range ballistic missile developed by Iran and first put into service in 2002. The Islamic Republic unveiled an upgraded version in 2012 that improved the weapon's accuracy and increased its range to 300 kilometers (185 miles).

Iranian defense minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said at the time that the solid-fueled missile could strike with pin-point precision, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran's arsenal.

An airstrike in January also targeted weapons apparently bound for Hezbollah, Israeli and US officials have said. The White House had no immediate comment on Sunday's reported missile strikes.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group, also reported large explosions in the area of Jamraya, a military and scientific research facility northwest of Damascus, about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the Lebanese border.

Hezbollah's al-Manar TV said the research center in Jamraya was not hit. It added that an army supply center was targeted by the strike. It quoted unnamed Syrian security officials as saying that three sites including military barracks, arms depots and air defense center were targeted by the strike.

The station aired footage of what it said was a facility in Jamraya that was hit in the airstrike. It showed a heavily damaged building as well as what appeared to be a chicken farm with some chickens pecking around in debris scattered with dead birds.

The raid appeared to have taken place next to a major road that was filled with debris, and shell casings were strewn on the ground. A blue street sign on the side of the road referred to the direction of the Lebanon border and the Syrian town of Zabadani near the frontier.

Lebanon's Al-Mayadeen TV, that has several reporters around Syria, said one of the strikes targeted a military position in the village of Saboura, west of Damascus and about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the Lebanon border.

An amateur video said to be shot early Sunday in the Damascus area showed fire lighting up the night sky. The video appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting.

Uzi Rubin, a missile expert and former Defense Ministry official, told the AP that if the target were Fateh-110 missiles as reported then it is a game changer as they put almost all Israel in range and can accurately hit targets.

Rubin emphasized that he was speaking as a rocket expert and had no details on reported strikes.

"If fired from southern Lebanon they can reach Tel Aviv and even (the southern city of) Beersheba." He said the rockets are much five times more accurate than the scud missiles that Hezbollah has fired in the past. "It is a game changer because they are a threat to Israel's infrastructure and military installations," he said.

Israel's first airstrike in Syria, in January, also struck Jamraya.

At the time, a US official said Israel targeted trucks next to the research center that carried SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles. The strikes hit both the trucks and the research facility, the official said. The Syrian military didn't confirm a hit on a weapons shipment at the time, saying only that Israeli warplanes bombed the research center.

Israeli lawmaker Shaul Mofaz, a former defense minister and a former chief of staff, declined to confirm the airstrike but said Israel is concerned about weapons falling into the hands of the Islamic militant group amid the chaos of Syria's civil war.

"We must remember that the Syrian system is falling apart and Iran and Hezbollah are involved up to their necks in Syria helping Bashar Assad," he told Israel Radio. "There are dangers of weapons trickling to the Hezbollah and chemical weapons trickling to irresponsible groups like al-Qaida."

Lavish Indian wedding: South Africa's Jacob Zuma govt in crisis

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 04 Mei 2013 | 22.14

AFP May 3, 2013, 07.33PM IST

(A group of top ministers…)

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa's government announced the suspension of a slew of officials and military personnel Friday, as it tried to limit the political and diplomatic fallout from a lavish Indian wedding.

A gaggle of top ministers appeared in public to explain how a rich Indian family with ties to President Jacob Zuma landed a Airbus A330 laden with wedding guests at a military base without permits.

The passengers were guests of the Gupta family, a major political donor to the ruling ANC and one of the country's richest families.

The scandal has rocked South Africa and left Zuma facing allegations of cronyism from political foes and rare public rebukes from his allies.

Attempting to defuse the crisis, minister after minister on Friday insisted "no executive authority" was granted for the plane to land at Waterkloof airforce base outside Pretoria on Tuesday.

Justice minister Jeffrey Radebe â€" flanked by the ministers of home affairs, foreign affairs, police and defence â€" announced that five officials and military personnel had been suspended from duty.

He vowed to bring to justice those who "brought the country into disrepute" and said a full investigation will report within seven days.

Two police officers and one reservist have also been arrested in connection with a blue-light escort that took the guests from the airport to the Sun City resort where the wedding took place.

It was claimed that most of the vehicles in the cavalcade were privately hired and illegally fitted with blue lights, although at least one police vehicle was present.

But the finger of blame was also pointed at India's high commissioner to South Africa, who appeared to have asked for landing rights.

"We have a diplomatic incident at hand," said foreign minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, vowing to use diplomatic channels to voice its displeasure.

Relations between South Africa and India are already strained following a BRICS summit in Durban in March, when Zuma failed to have a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Zuma did manage bilateral meetings with his Chinese and Russian counterparts.

The wedding party was expected to leave South Africa on Friday, but the political fallout is likely to continue for weeks.

The trade union umbrella group COSATU, which forms one pillar of the ANC's ruling "tripartite alliance" expressed its anger over the issue.

"We still await any proper explanation or justification for the decision to allow this invasion of a national security key-point by a bunch of private individuals," said secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi.

"We must demand the fullest possible investigation into the whole incident and the real culprits exposed - not scapegoats from among the officials, who surely could not have taken such an obviously politically sensitive decision."

Reflecting the ties between Zuma and the Gupta family, two of the president's children have served as directors of Gupta-owned firms, according to South Africa's companies' database.

No harsh words exchanged with Dravid, I respect him: Gambhir

KOLKATA: His image taking a bit of beating after verbal duel with Rahul Dravid during Friday's IPL game, Gautam Gambhir on Saturday sought to clear the air by saying that he never exchanged any harsh words with the legendary batsman, who remains a respected figure for him.

Watch IPL Videos

This is the second time that Gambhir is involved in such an altercation. In an earlier IPL match, he and Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli were involved in an ugly on-field spat.

On Friday night in the fifth over of the KKR innings, first Manvindra Bisla and Shane Watson started a verbal duel when the latter threatened to throw a ball back the batsman. Dravid tried to calm down Bisla but the stumper wanted him to cool off Watson first. Gambhir who was batting at the other end, also joined the heated discussion.

In the next over, when Gambhir was stumped by Dinesh Yagnik off Watson, it looked that the batsman again exchanged some words with Dravid before walking off.

However, Gambhir early Saturday morning clarified that no such altercation happened.

"Guys, u have got it all wrong. No harsh words exchanged between me n Rahul bhai. He was n will always be a respected teammate. No fuss plz," he wrote on his twitter page.

Gambhir actually ridiculed the way last night's incident is being circulated.

"Guess we are always obsessed wid some drama or spice. Sorry none existed between me and rahul. Always respect him," read his second tweet.

Australian spin legend Shane Warne, who led the Rajasthan Royals to IPL title in 2008, railed the Indian opener.

"Question cricket followers - is Ghambir in the top 3 annoying cricketers on the planet ???," Warne wrote on his twitter page.

In an earlier version of this report the Press Trust of India had quoted Ravindra Jadeja as tweeting: "Gambhir you might have won the game, but you lost all the respect of Blue Billion and you'll never get it back." The tweet had actually been made from a proxy account in the name of Ravindra Jadeja. We have since removed the quote and thank our readers for pointing out the fake nature of the tweet.

India drop Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh for Champions Trophy

MUMBAI: Opener Gautam Gambhir and middle order batsman Yuvraj Singh were axed while stumper Dinesh Karthik was rewarded for his good batting form with a berth in India's 15-member squad for next month's Champions Trophy in England.

Apart from Karthik, all-rounder Irfan Pathan, pacers Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar also made a comeback to the side announced BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale after a meeting of the selection committee on Saturday.

The selection committee, headed by former cricketer Sandeep Patil, however, surprisingly picked Murali Vijay in the team ahead of the left-handed Gambhir. Vijay has not been in the best of form and has been dropped from even his IPL franchise, the Chennai Super Kings.

Pacer Ashok Dinda, who has been getting a lot of stick in the IPL, and batsman Ajinkya Rahane were also left out of the squad, which has Mahendra Singh Dhoni as captain for the event starting June 6.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra, performing well in the IPL, was also included in the team to complement Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin -- the two other specialist tweakers in the side.

Shikhar Dhawan, who made his Test debut with a breathtaking 187 against Australia recently, expectedly got the selectors' nod as the number one opener.

The national selectors sprung a surprise by sacking Gambhir, whose form has been patchy of late. He has scored 320 runs in 11 games in the ongoing IPL, including three half-centuries.

Gambhir has, however, been named in the probables' list for the tri-series in the West Indies, which will follow the Champions Trophy. In that list, six players -- Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Ambati Rayudu, Rahul Sharma and Gambhir -- were added to the 15 named for the Champions Trophy.

Gambhir's omission did come as a surprise, particularly after his long-time partner Virender Sehwag was not even included in the 30-member probables list.

Clearly, the selectors are looking to blood in young openers keeping in view the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Yuvraj's ouster was not entirely unexpected considering that the left-hander has not been in the best of form in the ongoing IPL.

Yuvraj has been without a half-century in his eight IPL matches for Pune Warriors, managing just 156 runs at an average of 22.28 with the best being a 34.

Considering the seam-friendly conditions in England, the selectors have opted for five pace bowlers with Ishant Sharma spearheading the attack.

The squad has five specialist batsmen in Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Vijay and Dhawan, while Dhoni and Karthik are the two wicketkeeper-batsmen.

In Gambhir's absence, Dhawan and Vijay are likely to be the opening combination though Karthik could also be an option since there are just two specialist openers in the squad.

India and South Africa are scheduled to kick off the contest on June 6 at the Sophia Gardens at Cardiff, Wales in a Group B match.

India will then take on the West Indies at the Kennington Oval in London on June 11 before concluding the four-team group engagement on June 15 against archrivals Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka form Group A.

The top two teams from each group would progress to the semi-finals scheduled on June 19 and 20 at the Kennington Oval and Sophia Gardens respectively with the winners advancing to the June 23 final to be played at Edgbaston.

This would be the first international engagement for the Indian team after the conclusion of the four-Test series against Australia on March 24.

Team: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Murali Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Irfan Patan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Vinay Kumar.

Language of Chetan Bhagat’s book pornographic: Gujarat HC

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 03 Mei 2013 | 22.14

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court on Thursday criticized author Chetan Bhagat's book, 'Three Mistakes of My Life' for its language. Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya dubbed its language as "pornographic" while hearing a PIL objecting to the alleged projection of Hindus as solely responsible for the 2002 riots, in the recently released Bollywood film, Kai Po Che!.

Claiming that the film was based on Bhagat's book, the counsel for petitioner sought cancellation of the certificate issued by the censor board to the movie as it showed Hindus in a biased manner. He gave a copy of the book to the judges and the CJ read the paragraph on which the scene of rioting was based. After reading the passage, the CJ commented, "The language doesn't look decent. A chaste writer cannot write this stuff. The language looks pornographic." The paragraph the judges were reading contains abuses, and the chief justice stopped reading it further in open court.

Objecting to the projection of Hindus as rioters, the PIL claims that this is prohibited under section 5B of the Cinematograph Act and that the Censor Board had wrongly issued a certificate for public projection. It has urged the court to cancel the certificate and restrict release of the DVDs.

Pak takes up with India issue of attack on its national in Jammu jail

NEW DELHI: Pakistan on Friday raised with India the incident in which one of its nationals lodged in a Jammu jail was attacked and sought immediate consular access to him.

"Pakistan high commission has shown serious concern. It has taken up with ministry of external affairs the attack on Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah in Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu," the press attache in the high commission here said.

He said apart from seeking immediate consular access, the high commission has also asked for detailed information about the incident and medical facilities for the victim and security of other Pakistani inmates.

It was not immediately known whether the attack on the 52-year-old convict with a sharp weapon was a backlash against the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a hospital in Pakistan yesterday after being comatose for nearly a week following a brutal assault by fellow inmates in a high-security Lahore jail, officials said.

Official sources said the Kot Balwal jail superintendent Rajni Sehgal has been suspended by the Jammu and Kashmir government which also ordered a probe.

The sources said Sanaullah, a resident of Pakistan, was admitted in Government Medical College hospital in an unconscious condition with serious injuries on his head after being hit by a fellow inmate this morning.

A case of assault was registered against Vinod Kumar, an ex-serviceman who is also serving a life term in the jail in the outskirts of Jammu. Kumar hails from Uttrakhand.

The sources said the health condition of Sanaullah was stated to be very critical as he was hit with a very sharp weapon. He may be shifted to Chandigarh's PGI for treatment as his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was pretty low. GCS is a scale for measuring level of consciousness, especially after a head injury, in which scoring is determined by three factors: amount of eye opening, verbal responsiveness, and motor responsiveness.

Sanaullah was arrested on April 1999 in connection with five cases related to terror activities. The attack occurred ahead of Sarabjit's funeral at his native village in Punjab.

49-year-old Sarabjit had sustained severe injuries when at least six prisoners attacked him in a barrack at Kot Lakhpat Jail last week, hitting him on the head with bricks.

He was on death row after being convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Pakistan's Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990 and spent about 22 years in Pakistani prisons. Sarabjit's family has said his was a case of mistaken identity.

Meanwhile, the Union home ministry has asked all the states to step up security of nearly 220 Pakistani prisoners lodged in their respective jails after the attack in the Lahore prison.

Attack on Pak prisoner 'regrettable': MEA

Terming as "regrettable" the incident in which a Pakistani prisoner was injured in a Jammu jail during an altercation with another inmate, India today said the matter was being investigated and the guilty will be punished.

The ministry of external affairs also said the injured was receiving the medical treatment and once the medical arrangements were in place, consular access will be provided.

"We are aware of the regrettable incident involving a Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay who was injured today during an altercation with another inmate of the jail in Jammu.

"The matter is being investigated and the guilty will be punished. Safety and security of prisoners in custody lies with the jail authorities and the necessary action is being taken.

"We are in touch with the Pakistan High Commission on the matter. The injured is receiving the medical treatment and once the medical arrangements are in place, the consular access will be provided," the spokesperson in the ministry said.

He also said in view of these tragic incidents, which included killing of two Indian prisoners in a Pakistani jail and that involving a Pakistani prisoner in a jail in Jammu on Friday, there is a need to take stock of the current measures in place to ensure safety, security and humane treatment of Indian and Pakistani prisoners in each other's jails.

"For this, we are proposing a meeting of the concerned authorities of both countries to study the recommendations and identify and put in place further measures to avoid such tragic incidents in future," he said.

He also noted that India had recently requested the joint judicial committee to visit jails in Pakistan.

This was Committee's sixth meeting and they have made some recommendations.

There are nearly 535 Indian prisoners (including 483 fishermen) in Pakistani jails and a total of 270 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails.

Pilots sleep as flight attendant turns off autopilot on Bangkok-Delhi flight

MUMBAI: Two Air India pilots put the lives of 166 passengers on a Bangkok-Delhi flight in danger by taking a 40-minute break from the cockpit and getting two flight attendants to operate the plane in their absence. Their stunt almost ended in disaster after one of the flight attendants accidentally turned off the auto-pilot, forcing the pilots to rush back to their seats.

The incident took place 33,000 feet in the air on Air India flight AI 133 (an Airbus 321) from Bangkok to Delhi on April 12, which took off from Bangkok on schedule, at 8.55 am.

Thirty minutes later, First Officer Ravindra Nath excused himself from the cockpit for a bathroom break and got flight attendant J Bhatt to occupy his seat in his absense. "According to the guidelines it is a standard procedure to ensure the presence of second person in the cockpit so that if the pilot is not able to operate the aircraft for some reason, the other crew member in the cockpit can immediately call for the other pilot. But what actually happened after this made a mockery of air safety," said a a source in Air India, who did not wish to be named.

Minutes after his co-pilot left the cockpit, Captain B K Soni called another flight attendant, Kanika Kala, and asked her to take his seat. Captain Soni did not leave the cockpit immediately; instead, he spent a few minutes teaching the two flight attendants how to operate the aircraft.

He left the cockpit after putting the plane on auto-pilot, leaving the flight attendants to operate the flight by themselves for the next 40 minutes while he and his co-pilot took a nap in business class.

Putting an aircraft on auto-pilot does not exempt pilots from remaining in the cockpit; their presence is required to monitor the flight's status and turn off auto-pilot if required. This was illustrated perfectly when Captain Soni and First Officer Nath were forced to rush back to their seats after one of the flight attendants accidentally switched off the auto-pilot, endangering the lives of everyone on board.

"A senior cabin crew member witnessed the entire drama unfold and brought the matter to the notice of the airline's management. All four were derostered and later suspended for this violation," added the Air India source.

Director General Arun Mishra of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), confirmed that all four employees had been suspended. "Following a safety violation, the airline has already suspended the people in question. We are conducting a inquiry into the matter," Mishra told Mumbai Mirror.

Captain Mohan Ranganathan, member of a government-appointed aviation safety panel, blamed the 'lackadaisical attitude' of the DGCA for the increase in air safety violations. "The DGCA should be held responsible for the increase in such cases as they have failed time and again to effectively enforce safety guidelines," said Ranganathan.

K Swaminathan, deputy general manager (corporate communications), Air India, did not comment on the incident, saying, "Your query has been referred to the concerned department for comment. We will revert to you on receiving their reply."

Don't bare legs in India, Asian Development Bank warns delegates

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 02 Mei 2013 | 22.14

NEW DELHI: When in India, don't show bare legs or wear short dresses. This could hurt Indian sensibilities and may lead to sexual harassment.

That's the advice being offered by Manila-based multilateral agency Asian Development Bank (ADB), which is hosting its 46th annual meeting in Greater Noida, to more than 4,000 delegates.

The annual meeting is being held in the India-Expo mart in Greater Noida and several of the delegates from nearly 67 countries are staying in hotels in Noida, Greater Noida and Delhi. The meeting will discuss issues related to the global economy, Asian challenges and development.

The advisory posted on the general information section on the ADB website says Indians are very conservative about dress and advises women to dress modestly, with legs covered.

"Trousers are acceptable, but shorts and short skirts are offensive to many. If you want to keep cool in the Indian sun, cotton clothing is essential along with a comfortable pair of open sandals," says the advisory.

Clicking on the 'read more' section takes one to a website TravelIndia.com, which elaborates on what is acceptable and what should be avoided while travelling in India. Among other subjects, it covers taking pictures, visiting religious places, eating, concept of time, tipping, siesta and common faux pas.

It also has a special section for gay travellers. "While travelling in India you might see a lot of men holding hands. This should not be taken as a sign of their sexual orientation, in all probability they are not gay," the advisory says.

"Most gays in India are of the closet kind as Indian society does not accept homosexuality. Declaring yourself to be a homosexual is a sure way of being disowned by family and friends."

It goes on to say that in big cities and amongst the higher strata of the society, homosexuality is not considered abnormal behaviour any more but cautions about showing affection in public.

"You would be better off avoiding public displays of affection such as cuddling and kissing each other in public (not just for gays). Homosexual relations between men are illegal in India and the penalty according to the Indian Penal Code is seven years rigorous imprisonment. However, had this law been enforced strictly, the Indian prisons would have been overflowing by now," the website says.

In the section titled: "Common Faux Pas", it says that kissing and embracing are regarded in India as part of sex and asks travellers to not engage in these activities. "It is not even a good idea for couples to hold hands," it says.

The advisory on eating says that when eating or drinking, your lips should not touch other people's food - "jutha or sullied food is strictly taboo."

"Don't, for example, take a bite out of a chapati and pass it on. When drinking out of a cup or bottle to be shared with others, don't let it touch your lips, but rather pour it directly into your mouth. This custom also protects you from things like hepatitis. It is customary to wash your hands before and after eating," the advisory says.

Sarabjit Singh dies, Pakistan to hand over his body to India

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thurday said the body of Indian death row convict Sarabjit Singh, who died in a Lahore hospital after a brutal assault in jail, will be handed over to Indian authorities after "the early completion of all formalities".

The Pakistan government will continue to facilitate the "early completion of all formalities and hand over the mortal remains of the prisoner to the Indian High Commission at the earliest possible", said a statement from the Pakistan Foreign Office.

The body of 49-year-old Sarabjit was moved to the mortuary of Jinnah Hospital in Lahore shortly after he died of cardiac arrest at around 1am. (1:30am IST)

He had been comatose since Friday, when he was attacked by six other prisoners within his barrack at Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The Foreign Office said the Pakistan government had been providing "all assistance to the family of Sarabjit Singh as well as to the Indian authorities since the occurrence of this unfortunate incident".

The statement said Sarabjit had died of cardiac arrest despite being "provided the best treatment available" and the staff of Jinnah Hospital working round the clock to save his life.

Pakistan's foreign secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani was quoted by the media as saying that the body would be "expeditiously" handed over to India after completing necessary formalities.

Official sources in Islamabad and Lahore said an autopsy and other formalities will have to be completed before handing over the body. A medical board will oversee the autopsy.

The Indian High Commission was in touch with both the federal and Punjab governments on the issue, the sources said.

Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal, who is in Lahore, is expected to meet Punjab caretaker chief minister Najam Sethi this afternoon.

Sarabjit sustained severe injuries when at least six prisoners attacked him in a barrack at Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday, hitting him on the head with bricks.

In New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed sadness over Sarabjit's death, saying criminals responsible for the barbaric and murderous attack on the Indian national must be brought to justice.

Sarabjit was convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990 and spent about 22 years in Pakistani prisons.

His family says he was the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.

Sarabjit's mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former President Pervez Musharraf.

The previous Pakistan People's Party-led government put off Sarabjit's execution for an indefinite period in 2008.

The official sources in Lahore had yesterday said Sarabjit had slipped into a "non-reversible" coma and this could lead to "brain death".

His measurements on the Glasgow Coma Scale, which indicates the levels of consciousness and damage to a person's central nervous system, had dropped to a "critical level", the sources said.

Police have booked two death row prisoners, Amer Aftab and Mudassar, for the attack on Sarabjit. They reportedly told investigators that they had attacked Sarabjit because he had allegedly carried out bomb attacks in Lahore.

No action has been taken so far against officials of the jail for failing to provide adequate security to Sarabjit.

Following the rapid deterioration in Sarabjit's condition, New Delhi had requested that he be immediately released so that he could be treated in India or a third country.

Sarabjit should be declared a martyr: Family

The family of Sarabjit Singh, Indian prisoner who succumbed to injuries after being brutally assaulted in a Lahore jail, has demanded that his body be handed over to them and he should be declared a "martyr".

The family has set forth demand to the Union home ministry including that Sarabjit's body be cremated with full state honours, Raj Kumar Verka, vice chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, told PTI.

They have also demanded that the Centre take full responsibility of the family, Verka said.

The government will hold a meeting today to consider the demands of Sarabjit's family, he added.

Verka said Sarabjit's family members, who are with him at his New Delhi residence, are in a state of shock after receiving the news of his death.

He said he has forwarded the demands to the Union home ministry and is in touch with the Central leaders, including home minister Sushilkumar Shinde himself.

Sarabjit Singh is brain dead, Pak doctors say

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 01 Mei 2013 | 22.14

LAHORE/AMRITSAR: Doctors at Lahore's Jinnah Hospital on Tuesday said Sarabjit Singh was "brain-dead" even as Pakistani authorities refused to give a medical update. Brain-dead refers to a condition where the brain is irreversibly damaged but other vital organs may be functioning with artificial support.

Sarabjit has been in deep coma since Friday's near-fatal attack in jail and despite detecting severe injuries, doctors said his body was in no condition for surgery. "Sarabjit's survival needs nothing less than a miracle," a senior doctor told TOI on condition of anonymity.

Sarabjit Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur said on Tuesday that even if doctors in Pakistan declared her brother brain-dead, she would not allow him to be taken off the ventilator.

Dalbir said she had appealed to the Indian government to send a team of doctors to examine Sarabjit as she was not satisfied with the treatment given to him at Lahore's Jinnah Hospital. "Even if Pakistani doctors declare my brother brain dead, I wouldn't let them remove him from ventilators unless a team of doctors from India examines him," she said.

All through Tuesday, Sarabjit's wife and daughter weren't given any clear picture of the 49-year-old's status; TOI managed to reach some doctors privy to the treatment who confirmed he was "brain-dead" while being on ventilator support. Sarabjit's wife and daughters will return from Pakistan on Wednesday and head for New Delhi to meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

"His brain is dead. He was brought to the hospital in a state of deep coma. Since day one, his health has not shown any sign of improvement. In such cases, patients survives till the ventilator runs," a senior doctor told TOI.

Dalbir told TOI that she got to speak to a doctor around 9pm and was told, "Pray for him, it could take 10 days to three months for him to recover." But she blamed authorities at the hospital for being "evasive" and refusing to let any relative near the patient. She said until now, Sarabjit was partly covered by a sheet but "today when I peered into the ICU I saw him entirely covered".

She added that she had seen an ink mark on Sarabjit's left thumb. "Why is there ink mark on his thumb? I believe Pakistani authorities must have obtained his thumb impression on some documents."

Sarabjit was attacked with bricks and iron rods by two fellow inmates - Amir Tanba and Mudasir - in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail on Friday afternoon when he was brought outside his cell for a routine break.

Sarabjit's lawyer, Awais Shaikh, said his client had informed the authorities several times about threats to his life. Shaikh said that he had written to the prison authorities and government officials but all those requests were not taken seriously. "The jail authorities were themselves involved in the brutality," he remarked.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has issued show cause notices to seven jail officials, including jail Superintendent Mohsin Rafiq, for failing to protect Sarabjit.
