PLOT SUMMARY

A young boy Daanish (Dhanush) is born mute in rural Igatpuri but falls in love with films. He acts out scenes before his class, amazing his peers and teacher, and spends all his time in the local Paradise theatre. He even tries to board a Mumbai bus to go become a film star but is pulled off by his mother's friends. When he grows up, Daanish brings pakoras to the local video-store owner and watches movies every day. His mother feigns illness and keeps him from going to Mumbai but when she passes on, Daanish leaves for Bollywood.

He literally jumps into Film City past its guards and finds shelter in a star's vanity van, hiding under the sofa. Travelling around in the empty van, Daanish desperately tries to meet directors but can't. He meets assistant director Akshara (Haasan) who is impressed by his talent. She shows his video, shot on her phone, to a director but he rejects casting a mute hero. Akshara's father is a doctor who treats Daanish after he gets into a scuffle with security guards. He recommends Daanish to his friend in Finland who shows Daanish new technology that uses embedded micro-recorders and ear-pieces and enables mute people to communicate via a 'borrowed' voice.

Akshara and Daanish finally find the perfect voice - that of Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), a failed actor who lives in a graveyard, soaked in whiskey and cynicism. The duo approach Amitabh to lend his voice to Daanish - he agrees, tickled by the idea of making his once-rejected baritone successful. He signs a Non-Disclosure Agreement and they start training him and Daanish to sync together secretly. Their very first project is a super-hit and there's no looking back as offers come pouring in for 'Shamitabh', Daanish's new name, created by merging the two.

But Amitabh, who's officially Daanish's valet Robert, also wants a say in accepting or rejecting scripts. He tells Daanish his voice is as big - if not bigger - a star than Daanish's talent. The friction between them grows. Amitabh gets fever and Daanish makes him take an injection. In revenge, Amitabh makes Daanish accepts singing a song in his new film. Amitabh sings the 'Piddly' song but is horrified by its picturisation of toilets across snowy peaks, suggested by Daanish to tease him.

Daanish is invited to London to deliver a speech on creativity which Amitabh voices for him, but Daanish treats him like staff, leaving him to carry luggage, etc. Amitabh gets drunk at a pub and attacks a cop, after which he is arrested. Daanish is furious. He bails him out but bars him from drinking.

When they reach Mumbai Airport, press persons asks Daanish if he's apologetic about the incident. Amitabh mischievously makes him mouth "No" and an enraged Daanish beats up Amitabh. The duo parts ways. Daanish makes a director produce a film featuring two mute lovers, him playing the role via method acting off and on-screen, while Amitabh lends his voice to producer Keshav Bhimani's son Armaan's debut. Both films however - one lacking voice, the other, talent - flop.

Meanwhile, Akshara, who has gone to Sikkim to write a script for Daanish, returns but gets mad at Daanish when he refuses to apologise to Amitabh. She goes to see Amitabh when he falls ill and revives him. Akshara forces Amitabh and Daanish to see sense and come back together.

A paparazzi reporter meanwhile has unearthed the secret that Daanish was born mute. He threatens to expose the duo but they decide to tell the truth and wow the world. 'Shamitabh' accept Akshara's script and Daanish tells Akshara that he loves her. On the way to Akshara's film ceremony, the two stars have a terrible car accident. Daanish is killed while Amitabh loses his voice.
