Former Pakistani interior minister Rehman Malik has become a viral sensation after the emergence of an online video which showed how irate passengers prevented him from taking a Pakistan International Airlines flight. The passengers, reportedly 250 of them, were seething with anger at having been kept waiting for over two hours for the VIP passenger.

The mobile phone video, posted on Daily Motion on Monday and reposted on YouTube (YouTube is blocked in Pakistan) shows Malik being shooed away at the entrance of the aircraft. A second, longer part shows his travel accomplice PML-N leader Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani being shouted at by passengers, who make him vacate his seat, take his bag, and leave.

"Inko main grill karta hun abhi, don't you worry," the man behind the phone camera can be heard saying as the impatient crowd angrily waits for Malik to turn up, complaining about their time being wasted. "We have taken it for 68 years. Are we going to take it for another 68 years?" one person can be seen asking. Then, just as the former minister enters, he is faced with an angry mob. "Sorry Malik saab, you go back" one is heard shouting. "You should apologise. You should be ashamed of yourself. Malik sa'ab, you're not a minister anymore. And even if you are, we don't care anymore. You people have to become humans. Aap zameen pe utrein," the ex-minister is told by the passengers, at which, Malik promptly turns back, walks a distance, turns around says something inaudible over the din.

PIA has reportedly suspended its staff over the delay. Meanwhile, on Twitter, Malik has responded to the controversy. "The PIA flight was not delayed for me. I saw one guy looked to be drunk shouting at PIA and I decided to return as the door was closed. I demand open enquiry if it was delayed for me. I sensed it that someone is playing dirty and it was good avoid (sic) the situation. No delay for me. I have morale courage (sic) to apologise. If I had caused the delay and what influence do I have on PIA to delay it (sic). I demand an enquiry into it," he wrote in a series of tweets. On Dailymotion, the videos have been shared in sets of three, each accumulating thousands of views.

One of the earliest copies has over 2,50,000 views on Dailymotion. On Youtube, where a video that stitches the three clips into a single post, had over 1,700 views at the time of writing.

Another part of the video, ostensibly shot before Malik makes an appearance, shows Vankwani entering the aircraft. But he is received just as angrily. The passengers are shown following him to his seat, crowding the aisles, shouting at him and asking him to leave. "I was just sitting outside," he is heard explaining to the irate crowd, that insists on knowing his name and position in the government bureaucracy - a request that Vankwani hedges for some time, before finally admitting that he is "Dr Ramesh Kumar". All the while, he insists that he is not with Malik.
