Picture-perfect honeymoon — for three

Being a third wheel on a honeymoon seems a sure sign that the holiday is shot. But blushing bride-to-be Preethi Natrajan is thrilled at the idea of her photographer joining them in Paris. "Why not get a beautiful picture in front of the Louvre instead of handing the camera over to a stranger? It is expensive, but we will have a picture and memory that will last a lifetime," says Natrajan, a classical dancer.

To ensure that years from now, they have more to cherish than a selfie with two heads squeezed in, some Indian newlyweds are ramping up the romantic sojourn by flying photographers to the exotic destinations they're visiting, while others settle for local talent.

Rakesh Prakash, a Chennai-based wedding photographer, says it's just like a pre or post-wedding shoot but done overseas. "A couple flew me to an island in Bali for two days towards the end of their honeymoon and we picked two locations and shot," says Prakash. Amar Ramesh, another photographer from Chennai, flew to New York to photograph a couple whose wedding he had shot a year earlier in Chennai. "I took plenty of shots with the couple on the streets, and on the Brooklyn Bridge," says Ramesh, revealing that travel and accommodation expenses, exclusive of his fee, are covered by the couple.

Two out of 10 clients opt for honeymoon photography, say photographers and those who do spend anywhere between Rs 3-4 lakh in total, including the sangeet, wedding and reception as well. "Our photographer charged us Rs 70,000 for an hour's shoot in Bora Bora to give us 100 pictures," says Bangalore-based Narmada Arjun. The shoot was cancelled due to bad weather, but the couple has planned another shoot in London in July. "It is extremely expensive but definitely worth the money," she feels.

To save on travel, food and accommodation for the photographer, and get a head start on location scouting, some couples prefer commissioning local photographers. "My husband and I couldn't get a pre-wedding shoot because of time constraints. We were travelling all the way to South Africa and visiting nine places on our honeymoon so we thought it would be a good idea to get pictures shot there," says Manessa Raghavan, an advertising professional who recently married.

After surfing the net, she finalized a photographer in Cape Town who gave her a discount as she was excited about shooting an Indian couple for the first time. They paid Rs 21,000 for the two-hour shoot. "We got lovely pictures by the mountains and with the cityscape behind us," she says.

The idea has also clicked with some hotel chains and resorts, which now offer complimentary photo-shoots only for newlyweds. "I bought an expensive camera before going on my honeymoon but was pleasantly surprised when the Four Seasons, Bora Bora offered us a complimentary shoot at the resort," says Janani Gautam, a pre-school teacher. The couple enjoyed their half day with a French photographer, who took them out on a boat and shot on the sea.

Tailing these twosomes can be a tricky task for photographers, who are careful not to intrude on their privacy. "There are photographers who trail couples everywhere and click them eating or walking. But I tell my clients to enjoy their honeymoon and then call me. I usually fly in on the last day and shoot," says Ramesh.
