In glowing praise of the NDA leadership and agenda that marks a break from the past when the PM was targeted for communalism, Tharoor said, "We appreciate the inclusive and positive language from the high echelons of this government. The opposition should not be churlish to ignore that."
The U-turn in Congress views about Modi came out in an online article under the heading 'How Narendra Modi may have evolved into Modi 2.0' in which Tharoor emphasized that "to almost everyone's surprise ... Modi and the BJP have eschewed the hubris and triumphalism they might have assumed to have earned with their sweeping victory."
He wondered if it was "Modi 2.0, a very different figure in government from the ogre some of us had feared and demonized for years?"
According to Tharoor, Modi may be realizing that "if he wants to make a success of his government, he will have to lead the nation from the centre and not from the extreme right where he had built his base in the BJP".
Continuing with the positive assessment of Modi's transition, the AICC spokesman added that just like Modi was looking to turn himself from a "hate-figure into an avatar of modernity and progress", he was also seeking to remake the BJP from a vehicle of Hindu chauvinism to a natural party of governance.
"This will mean a change in both language and tone, as he has demonstrated from day one," he said.
However, Tharoor added that Congress would be the first to protest if BJP and Modi returned to their old agenda.
The Congress spokesman pointed to the lynching of a textile company manager in Pune on Tuesday by seven Hindutva activists to underline that Modi's new inclusive language had not reached everyone and that he needs to reiterate it.
Mohsin Sadiq was beaten to death in Pune by some members of a Hindu outfit. Tharoor said the PM needed to underscore that answer to an opinion was another opinion and to a view was another view, and not going around assaulting people.
