Bid to rape Aligarh judge at high-security home

ALIGARH: An embattled Akhilesh Yadav government, already pushed into a corner by an unending stream of horrific rape cases, had to face one of its most embarrassing moments when news came in early Tuesday. An attempt had been made a day before to rape an additional civil judge in her "well protected" Aligarh home in the high-security 'Judge's Compound', an area that is under 24-hour Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) surveillance.

In an FIR filed by the judge's family late Monday, the assailants were identified as Gopal Gupta from Bareilly and Pankaj Gupta from Farrukhabad. The 47-year-old judge was alone in the house when the attack occurred. Police said it was unclear how the men entered the residence.

The judge, who had bruises on her body, had also been forced to swallow a toxic disinfectant. The two attackers apparently did that twice, perhaps thinking it would be potent enough to either render her unconscious or kill her.

In the morning, the judge was rushed to JN Medical College for an examination, where she was declared to be out of danger. Her family later arrived from Bareilly and took her home, police said.

"The family filed an FIR for attempt to rape and murder, and we are investigating the matter," SSP Nitin Tiwari said, adding that the accused would be charged under relevant sections of IPC 376 (rape), 458 (trespass), 328 (causing hurt by poisoning), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or use of criminal force on a woman), 507 (criminal intimidation) and 334 (voluntarily causing hurt or provocation).

The incident, which has shaken the legal fraternity and the general public alike, has come at a time when the Samajwadi Party government in UP is being pilloried for its inability to contain lawlessness ever since news broke out of the rape and hanging of two teenaged sisters in Badaun on May 28. On Saturday, the body of a 20-year-old was found naked, her face disfigured with acid, in Baheri of Bareilly district.
