2014 Lok Sabha elections: Congress leaders concede defeat before poll results

NEW DELHI: Congress leaders have conceded defeat ahead of results to Lok Sabha polls, compounding the negativity triggered by the sudden disappearance of Rahul Gandhi's 'face' from party headquarters.

Senior leader Rashid Alvi said Congress will not be in a position to dictate the power play and suggested that it back a "secular" front headed by Mamata Banerjee.

"It may be difficult for us to form the government, but all secular forces should come together to keep Narendra Modi away from power... I suggest that regional parties should elect Mamata, who is secular, competent and honest beyond doubt, as their leader," he said.

While an embarrassed Congress disowned Alvi's remarks as "personal", it appeared to acknowledge the exit polls' forecast that Congress was staring at a rout.

Congress has refused to accept this while dubbing these polls as being prone to bloopers and being biased in favour of BJP.

As if backing Alvi's concession remark, MP Sandeep Dikshit ruled himself out of the possible victors in the key east Delhi constituency.

Son of former chief minister Sheila Dikshit and two-time MP, Dikshit said, "There is a lot of anti-incumbency and a win is unlikely."

He also painted a bleak picture for the party. "Our campaign was not up to the mark, there was anti-incumbency and that clearly showed in Delhi. That's why you see so many exit polls are giving these numbers," he added.

The negativity refused to leave Congress as the absence of party mascot Rahul from posters and the backdrop prepared for media interactions at the AICC headquarters for the counting day led to murmurs.

AICC has prepared special cubicles on its lawns at 24, Akbar Road, where spokespersons would talk to TV channels. Only the party symbol "hand" is seen there, in stark contrast to how Rahul was the ubiquitous face in print and TV.

Post-election, there have been efforts in the party to insulate him from criticism for the possible drubbing. Congress has said the responsibility for the results would be "collective" and elections are a verdict on the performance of the government of which Rahul is not a part.

Absence of Rahul's face from the AICC lawns that would be beamed into households across the country through TV channels raised the query if it was another attempt to dilute his mascot-like imprint on the party's election campaign.

Congress leaders rubbished the chatter, saying it was a decision taken earlier that the party would use its symbol as the media backdrop.
