"It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide," the late actor's publicists wrote on his Facebook account on Saturday.
"He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives." The publicists wrote that they were "stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news." The message was also linked to Walker's Twitter account.
The event was a fundraiser to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan for Reach Out Worldwide (ROWW), a non-profit disaster relief group the actor founded. Walker was at the event when he decided to take the car for a spin with his friend, who was driving.
The alleged driver of the car was identified as former race car driver Roger Rodas, according to a Santa Clarita radio station with sources close to the situation.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department had initially said in a statement that two people were killed in a car accident in Valencia. Deputies arriving at the scene found the vehicle engulfed in flames. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.
The office did not provide the identities of the dead, and said the cause was under investigation. Later, local media reported that Walker was killed when his friend allegedly lost control and his red Porsche sports car slammed into a tree and caught fire. Witnesses recognized him and one onlooker even tried to pull him from the wreckage, the local Santa Clarita Valley Signal newspaper reported.
Walker, 40, appeared in all but one of the six movies in the popular franchise, and was a leading protagonist along with Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez. The actor was taking a Thanksgiving break from filming the seventh "Fast and Furious" movie, which had been scheduled for release in July. He is survived by his 15-year-old daughter Meadow.

Paul Walker was the son a fashion model and a sewer contractor. He was raised in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, and was the oldest of five siblings. After high school, he majored in marine biology. When he was a toddler, his mother began taking him to auditions. He had starred in a Pampers commercial.
After a number of TV roles in the 1980s, Walker made his debut in 'Meet the Deedles', a 1998 comedy. He was noticed in the thriller 'The Skulls' by Fast and Furious producer Neal H Moritz.
Walker described himself on Twitter as an "outdoorsman, ocean addict," and "adrenaline junkie". He was also an avid surfer and performed many of his own movie stunts. He had a daughter by his ex-girlfriend Rebecca McBrain.
Child star to heartthrob
Walker became a teen heartthrob, appearing in movies like "Pleasantville" (1988), "She's All That" and "Varsity Blues" (both 1999). He is due to appear in "Hours," which is about a father who struggles to keep his ailing infant daughter alive after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. Halker was also scheduled to star in the 2014 film "Brick Mansions," a remake of the 2004 French movie District B13.
