MIAMI: A doctor thought it might be funny to crack a joke about a bomb in his luggage. Instead, he partly forced the evacuation of Miami International airport, and earned an almost $90,000 fine.
Manuel Alvarado, 60, will pay out $89,172 for his "momentary lapse of reason in making these statements," which prompted costly evacuations and delays for airlines, and brought out a police bomb squad, said his lawyer Brian Bieber.

Just before boarding an Avianca flight to Bogota on October 22, a security officer asked Alvarado routine questions; the Venezuelan doctor responded that he was carrying C-4 explosives.

Though he corrected himself and said he was just joking, it was too late for airport authorities' taste.

"He is extremely remorseful. He had no intent to place anyone in fear. He made what turned out to be the worst mistake of his life," Bieber said.

Alvaro will pay the fine in a deal that saw prosecutors agree to drop charges of making a false bomb threat and criminal mischief. Once he has paid, the surgeon can return home, the attorney added.

Since the September 11, 2001 strikes on US targets, penalties for making bomb threats have become increasingly severe.

Modi's minister regrets abusive remark, but opposition wants her to resign

NEW DELHI: Union minister Niranjan Jyoti's regret and apology over her derogatory remark has failed to satisfy the opposition parties, who want her to resign over the issue even as BJP desperately tried to defend the minister's outburst.

Speaking to reporters after apologizing in Parliament, the minister refused to respond to opposition demand for her resignation and said, "I have said sorry over my remarks and I will speak no further on the issue."

"What else can I do?" she asked.

Addressing an election rally in Delhi Niranjan Jyoti had said, "People of Delhi have to decide if they want a government of Ramzaadon (followers of Ram) or a government of those who are illegitimate."

She went on to say that Muslims, Christians were all children of Ram.

The minister said she was apologizing as she did not want her party to be embarrassed over her remarks.

The government has indicated that there will be no further action against the minister.

Urban development minister and senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said it has been a part of parliamentary practice that when a person apologizes the matter is laid to rest.

The BJP, meanwhile, desperately tried to defend the minister.

While one BJP leader called the minister's controversial statement a 'slip of tongue', another defended her by saying "she is a first-time MP and hence does not know how to conduct herself."

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned thrice on Tuesday as opposition refused to accept the minister's apology over the statement.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley accepted in Rajya Sabha that the word used by the minister was improper and unacceptable.

But neither the minister's apology nor Jaitley's admission pacified the opposition, which insisted on her resignation.

The opposition leaders, especially from the Left and TMC, also questioned the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the House.

There were also calls for FIR against the minister for her statement. Speaking on the issue in Rajya Sabha, BSP chief Mayawati said an FIR should be registered against the minister for her remarks.

NCP leader Majid Memon said, "An FIR must be registered, apologizing won't suffice, she must resign immediately."

Female IIT-B grad in top 3 recruits with Rs 1.4 crore Facebook offer

MUMBAI: One of the three students who bagged the highest package of Rs 1.42 crore each offered by Facebook at the premier IIT-B on the first day of the placement season is a woman. In fact, two of the five students hired by the social networking giant this year from the campus, including those hired during the pre-placement process, are women. At Kharagpur, too, a woman is among the three IITians who got the top deals.

Most students who bagged premium packages this year are into coding. Students from the computer science department usually bag the top offers; however, the number of women in this department are always less.

"This is the main reason why fewer women manage to get the top deal. This year, there are only five women in the batch and most of us have managed to get a good deal," said Deepali Adlakha, who got a position in San Francisco. "I did a lot of coding in the last few months which helped me bag the offer of my choice," she added.

Shree Meghana Thotakuri, who bagged an offer from Google, will also get a base package of Rs 65 lakh, similar to that of Facebook, besides a joining bonus and other benefits.

However, the variable component of the latter is higher than the rest of the leading firms, said a placement co-ordinator at IIT-B.

At IIT-B, along with Adlakha, Ved Ratn Dixit and Rohan Das got the highest offers, also from Facebook. Two others, Aastha Agarwal and Rahul Singhal, got the same package, but as pre-placement offers. The firm offered the highest package of Rs 1.42 crore this year at the IITs, of which over 50% is one-time incentive and stock benefits (variable component). However, the base pay for most coding profiles offered by leading firms was almost the same for international positions - Rs 65 lakh. Visa Inc took around 28 students from IIT-B, the highest. Goldman Sachs hired 11 students from the campus.

Dixit, who also got the Facebook offer, is placed in California. "The highest offer does not mean much as we go by the base salary offered. It is more important for me to get into a company that I always wanted to work with." The leading firms which hired from IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Delhi were similar to those at IIT-B. At IIT-Delhi, two students were hired by Facebook. Samsung Korea offered the second highest overall package (Rs 93 lakh).

More offers poured in on the first two days of placements at IITs this year, compared to last year. At IIT-Madras, the numbers went up from last year's 95 on day one to 158 this year, claimed placement co-ordinator Babu Vishwanathan. The highest offer made at Madras was around Rs 80 lakh. Facebook did not visit IIT-Madras campus this year.

Punj Rajan from IIT-Kharagpur said the placements this year looked very promising even as 350 companies registered, much higher than last year. At IIT-Roorkee, four students bagged international offers, from Google, Oracle and Microsoft, claimed co-ordinator Kunal Punjabi. "Software companies have gone up and some start-ups which did not come to the campus last year are also hiring from our campus," he added.

At IIT-B, the number of day one offers went up from 182 to 215 this year, including pre-placement offers. By the end of the second day, the number of offers made by close to 70 companies was estimated to be around 350. On day two, Oracle, Amazon, Cisco, Samsung India, Yahoo Japan, were some of the companies which visited the campus. Most of the e-commerce firms and start-ups are lined up on Wednesday. The third day will also see more core engineering firms visiting the campus, said placement co-ordinator Mohak Mehta.

DD anchor speaks out, says she feels suicidal

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 02 Desember 2014 | 22.14

24-year-old Aayenah Pahuja, the Doordarshan anchor who faced abusive criticism by internet trolls after her bloopers video was leaked, has finally spoken out.

Facebook page 'The Logical Indian' shared a video of the distressed anchor who requested the viewers to stop mocking her.

In the video, she reveals how the incident has made her suicidal.

Pahuja made a few mistakes while anchoring the opening ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) live from Goa on November 20.

She referred to state governor Mridula Sinha as the governor of India and failed to identify a Chinese actress.

The video went viral drawing a series of uncharitable comments. She was recalled from covering the closing ceremony and has lost future contracts as well.

"My career has been ruined. I am so distressed I have not eaten in four days. My family approached the cyber crime department so the video was taken off but new people keep uploading it," she had earlier told TOI in an interview.

"Of the smooth two-hour broadcast, only my mistakes have been posted. I have been successfully hosting corporate and entertainment shows since college."

Recalling the incident, she said, "My instruction mic failed five minutes before we went live. I should have refused to carry on but that would have been irresponsible so I held on. I was so nervous. I could not turn my head to see who was coming, and my producer could not convey the names of dignitaries. So I introduced as few people as possible, hoping the audience would recognize them anyway."

Upset over the online attack, Aayenah's mother has come out in her defence.
"People have selectively uploaded bits of videos. Thousands of people have called her things like 'stupid' or 'dumb', or ruthlessly ridiculed her on the social media. My daughter is deeply traumatised," her mother told 'The Logical Indian'.

Facebook offers Rs 1.55 crore package to IIT graduates

MUMBAI: A spectacular initial burst — at least 15-20% more jobs, 10-20% higher average salaries and 30% increase in global offers — set the pace for this year's placement season at Indian Institutes of Technology which kicked off on Monday. Sources from eight campuses that ET spoke to said hiring and salaries will shoot up this year, after a relatively slow 3-4 years.

In the first twenty hours, online social networking giant Facebook ruled the roost with a Rs 1.55 crore ($250,000) salary offer including bonus and Esops for a US posting. This is the probably the highest ever offer across IITs in recent years.

Facebook made the offer for software engineer profiles based out of California to three students at IIT Kharagpur and to an unknown number at IIT Bombay, sources at the two institutes revealed. The company did not respond to an email sent by Overall, big-ticket offers were back with a bang as other top paymasters, according to campus sources, included Samsung $150,000 (Rs 93 lakh), Microsoft $129,000 (Rs 80 lakh), Oracle $125,000 plus Esops (Rs 78 lakh plus Esops), Google $125,000 (Rs 78 lakh) and Visa $140,000 (Rs 87 lakh).

At IIT-BHU, Varanasi, the top package from a multinational was Rs 77.5 lakh ($100,000 base salary, $15,000 sign-on bonus and $10,000 relocation and stock options), an over 19% jump over the top offer last year. At IIT-Kanpur, it went up over 36% from $110,000 last year to $150,000 this time.

"If this momentum continues, we will place 1,200 students in the first 20 days compared to 1,000 last year," a placement team member of IIT-Kharagpur said.

Across campuses, international offers saw a boom compared to last year. Oracle, for instance, said that it is hiring for 15 overseas roles this year, compared to 13 last time. Students will join the American multinational computer technology corporation in product development roles across its hardware, software or industry — specific based groups. Cisco Systems and Visa offered overseas roles for the first time.

International offers will shoot up by 30%, agreed a placement source at IIT Kanpur. More offers — from the likes of ServiceNow ($90,000) and Epic Systems ($90,000) — are in the offing, he said.

Other first day recruiters across the 16 IITs included the likes of Goldman Sachs, HUL, ITC, Credit Suisse, McKinsey & Co and BCG. IIT-Bombay, which on student demand, has moved up some core engineering companies to premium slots, had GE, Airbus and Qualcomm among others, vying with traditional first-day recruiters for the first time.

Tower Research with Rs 44 lakh for an international role and WorldQuant with Rs 42 lakh for a domestic profile were among prominent recruiters at campuses such as IIT-Kanpur, placement sources revealed. Goldman Sachs offered packages of Rs 26 lakh and Credit Suisse around Rs 15-18 lakh while Samsung offered the most for its Korea posting.

Final placements at the IITs start on December 1 and are completed in two phases. A majority of the recruiters come in the first few weeks of December while the subsequent phase starts in January. The highest-paying and most-in-demand companies are typically slotted for the first few days of placements.

At IIT-Kharagpur, Facebook has made the top offer while Google, Microsoft and Cisco also competed for the best talent. Oilfield services company Baker Hughes, ITC (Rs 18 lakh approx), Schlumberger, Cairn India, Shell were among those recruiting for domestic roles. Microsoft paid around Rs 20 lakh for the India profiles. Xerox, the global printer manufacturer picked up students for 'budding scientist' profiles, said placement sources.

"The placements have been very good so far and from midnight to 6 am on Monday (1st day slot), 49 offers were rolled out, out of which 8 were international. Around 31 companies are expected on the first day," Natesan Srinivasan, faculty in-charge, training & placement for IIT-Guwahati said. A statement from IIT-Madras said the highest offer was $129,500 while the highest domestic salary was Rs 30 lakh. Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Samsung R&D and Xerox were among the companies who visited. The institute said it received 17 offers in the graveyard session (midnight to 6am) and another 64 in the forenoon one (6am to noon).

The placement season will continue till March-April, though a bulk of offers would roll out over the next three weeks.

Tripura's Marxist CM invites Modi to address his cabinet

Written By Unknown on Senin, 01 Desember 2014 | 22.14

AGARTALA: In a rare instance of bipartisanship, Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar, who leads the sole surviving Marxist regime in the country, has invited PM Narendra Modi to address the state cabinet on his favoured theme of good governance.

The meeting is going to be the first of its kind. In the backdrop of intense political bitterness in Centre-state relationships, it is being seen as a harbinger of a new trend. Ever since becoming Prime Minister, Modi has made it clear that there is no place for politics when it came to working with the states for development.

Modi is coming here to switch on the second unit of the 726 mw power plant constructed by ONGC-Tripura Power Company Ltd at Palatana, some 70km from the state capital. Sources in the know said the PM is expected to meet members of Sarkar's Cabinet after the inaugural function.

The invitation from Sarkar, who has been CM of Tripura since 1998, also stands out since the chief minister had earlier this month wrote to the PM expressing apprehension that changes in the structure of the rural employment scheme — MGNREGA — would reduce the money allotted for his state.

Sarkar, a Left stalwart who is serving his fourth term, had maintained that the proposed changes would make "the people from rural areas, particularly of Schedule Tribes, Schedule Castes and minority community losers".

The Tripura CM, a politburo member of the CPM, had called on Modi in New Delhi in August when he was in town for his party's central committee meeting. He had described the interaction as a courtesy call and had said that he would the PM again after some time to discuss matters related to Tripura.

Sarkar was hailed for steering the CPM to a hugely impressive win in the 2013 state elections, bagging 50 of the assembly's 60 seats and over 50% vote share even as the Left was being ousted from its strongholds of West Bengal and Kerala. Routinely touted as the poorest chief minister in India, Sarkar, in his affidavit to the Election Commission before the last polls, had declared Rs 1,080 in cash and Rs 9,720 in bank balance.

Known as a simple man and good administrator, Sarkar is credited with improving Tripura's social indices to a point where it rivals the best in the country. He is also credited with taming the festering, decades-old militancy in the state. With his invite to Modi, Sarkar has indicated that he would not let ideology come in the way of better relations with the Centre. At another level, the prime minister's visit to Tripura also marks an extension of his push for sub-regional economic corridor with eastern neighbours — Bangladesh and Myanmar — that could lead right up to China.

This is evident from the fact that a five-member delegation from Bangladesh is scheduled to attend the power plant's inaugural function. The delegation is being headed by Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina's energy advisor Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury. He is accompanied by Bangladesh's minister of state for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid and two senior officials.

Bangladesh already buys power from the Indian grid through a transmission link running between West Bengal. It has also evinced interest in buying power from the Palatana plant. India's largest generation utility NTPC is also setting up a power station in that country.

In a symbolic gesture, the Bangladesh delegation travelled to Agartala by road and was received at the Akhaura checkpost on the city's outskirts by state power and urban development minister Manik Dey. Akhaura is the second biggest trading post along the 4,096-km long India-Bangladesh border after the Benapole-Petrapole border crossing in West Bengal.

Sarkar's government has been urging the Centre for engaging with Bangladesh for better and wider surface transport connectivity — both rail and road links — and transit rights through that country. Bangladesh had allowed movement of heavy power equipment through its territory during the Palatana plant's construction.

Trinamool Congress: Amit Shah's name in Sahara scam

NEW DELHI: The Trinamool Congress on Monday staged a protest at the gate of the Parliament building demanding BJP president Amit Shah should be named in the Sahara scam and also raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha.

Trinamool Congress members alleged that a red diary recovered from Sahara chief Subrata Roy names Amit Shah.

Roy was arrested on February 28 and is still behind bars.

Raising the issue in the upper house as soon as it met for the day, Trinamool member Derek O'Brien demanded a discussion over the Central Bureau of Investigation's investigation against Amit Shah in the Sahara scam.

The members also flashed symbolic red diaries with Sahara written on them.

Deputy chairman PJ Kurien asked the members to raise the issue after 11.30am.

However, the other members protested over low procurement price of paddy and cotton corps, the scam issue could not be taken up.

At 12 noon, when the house met for question hour, Derek O'Brien again demanded a discussion, saying he has given a notice for suspension of the question hour.

"We want to raise an issue sir, very important issue. Name of Amit Shah appears in a red diary found from the Sahara chief," he said.

Haryana govt announces cash reward for Rohtak sisters

NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government on Monday announced that it will honour the two sisters, who single-handedly took on three alleged molesters in a moving bus, on Republic Day as the girls came in for praise for their bravery.

The girls will be given cash awards on the occasion of Republic Day.

The three men who allegedly molested the two sisters on a Haryana Roadways bus were on Monday sent to judicial custody till December 6, according to reports.

Taking serious note of this incident, Haryana government has asked state director general of police (DGP) and state transport department to take steps for ensuring safety and security of passengers especially women travelling in the Haryana roadways buses.

The bus drivers and conductors have also been directed to make sure that such incidents do not occur in future, it said.

Meanwhile, the driver and conductor of the bus were suspended by the Haryana government on Monday for failing to stop the molestation.

Speaking to Times Now, the two sisters said that Khaps must be banned in the state.

A shocking video of two young sisters turning the tables on their molesters in a crowded bus went viral on Sunday leading to the arrest of the three accused. The drama unfolded on a Haryana Roadways bus heading from Rohtak to Sonipat on November 24, when Arti Kumar, 22 and her sister Pooja, 19, were filmed attacking their molesters with their belts, by a pregnant woman travelling on the same bus.

What made the incident all the more alarming is the fact that none of the co-passengers who are seen in the video, cringing and smirking, so much as raised a finger to come to the aid of the hapless sisters. In fact the co-passengers are seen in the video dissuading the girls from lodging a police complaint. The pregnant woman was the only one who objected to the harassment by the three men.

Initially the duo, bachelor in computer application students, suffered in silence as the men passed obscene remarks and made lewd gestures at them. However when the men started picking on the pregnant woman as well, the girls took matters into their own hands and bravely fought back.

Eventually the sisters were overpowered, their mobile phones taken away and they were thrown off the moving bus causing them minor injuries. In the meantime the pregnant woman got off the bus at the next stop and accompanied the girls to the nearest police post. They were then taken to Sadar police station to register a case.

(A TV grab of the feisty sisters fighting off the molesters.)

Police have identified the three men as Mohit, Kuldeep and Deepak of Asan village. Police claim that while the accused are all Jats, the girls belong to an other backward class (OBC) community.

Rohtak SSP Shashank Anand said the accused have been booked for assault and outraging the modesty of a female. "They have been identified and were arrested on Sunday evening," he said.

Reflecting the sorry state of affairs in the state to tackle crimes of this nature, the much-hyped women helpline proved no help. According to the sisters the operator simply hung up after promising to call back. "Till now, our call has not been returned," said the sisters. Anand promised to look into the ineffectiveness of the helpline.

The Khattar government had also announced the deployment of guards in buses used by women but the move is yet to be implemented.

However the father of the girls, Rajesh Kumar, a clerk in the state electricity department had nothing but praise for his feisty daughters. "I am proud of them and expect other girls to follow them in the future," he said.

US lawmaker's aide draws ire over first daughter scolding

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 November 2014 | 22.14

WASHINGTON: A US lawmaker's communications director was facing social media calls she be sacked after her Facebook rant about President Barack Obama's daughters prompted widespread anger.

Elizabeth Lauten, spokeswoman for Republican Congressman Stephen Fincher of Tennessee, wrote a scathing post to her Facebook account scolding Malia and Sasha Obama, 16 and 13, for looking bored while attending a public event with their father on Wednesday.

In the post, since deleted but widely reproduced in screen grabs, Lauten tells the girls to "try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play."

The girls stood beside Obama -- looking vaguely bored -- as he issued the annual Thanksgiving turkey "pardon," saving two birds from the dinner table.

The underwhelmed expressions of the teenaged sisters sparked mainly amused comment, but Lauten's remarks were notably more caustic.

"Then again, your mother and father don't respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter," Lauten wrote in her post.

"So I'm guessing you're coming up a little short in the 'good role model' department.

"Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you.

"Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar," she added, apparently referring to the girls' short skirts.

The post quickly drew ire on Twitter and elsewhere, with many calling for Lauten to be fired, even after Lauten deleted it and posted an apology.

.@GoDaddyHelp I just quit at and hour and a half. Nice kid but still had no idea what to tell me was wrong. So frustrating.

— Elizabeth (@DCGopGirl) November 28, 2014

"After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were," Lauten wrote on Facebook, also widely reproduced before she made her page private.

"I'd like to apologize to all of those who I have hurt and offended with my words, and I pledge to learn and grow (and I assure you I have) from this experience," she added.

Elizabeth Lauten's scathing Facebook post scolding Malia and Sasha Obama. (Source: Twitter)

Star Jones, a lawyer and television personality, was among those unimpressed. "I've seen tacky people...but rarely seen someone as tacky as # ElizabethLauten for slamming the children of the # POTUS," she tweeted.

Many directed their tweets to Lauten's boss, as the hashtag #FireElizabethLauten went viral.

One commenter, whose username is Eclectic John, wrote: " @ RepFincherTN08 There is nothing that excuses what # ElizabethLauten posted re the children of our President. That's off limits. Fire her now."

DD anchor distressed by net attack on IFFI gaffe

MUMBAI: Cyberspace can be a cruel world. A Doordarshan anchor has come in for abusive criticism by netizens after failures in a live broadcast.

The 24-year-old casual announcer made a few mistakes while hosting the opening ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) live from Goa on November 20. She referred to state governor Mridula Sinha as the governor of India and failed to identify a Chinese actress. The video went viral drawing a series of uncharitable comments. She was recalled from covering the closing ceremony and has lost future contracts as well.

The nervous woman had remembered how a previous DD announcer was sacked for mispronouncing the name of Chinese premier Xi Jinping so she chose to remain silent on TV rather than repeat a similar mistake. "My career has been ruined. I am so distressed I have not eaten in four days. My family approached the cyber crime department so the video was taken off but new people keep uploading it," she told TOI. "Of the smooth two-hour broadcast, only my mistakes have been posted. I have been successfully hosting corporate and entertainment shows since college." She had recently changed her name with plans to become an actress.

Watch the video:

Doordarshan's additional director general Mukesh Sharma acknowledged that the link to the outdoor broadcasting van had failed. "We could not communicate with her and security harangued her on the red carpet as CMs and celebrities were to arrive. Trolls have blown the incident out of proportion by editing three minutes of error, causing this young child immense trauma. She almost became suicidal," he said.

"This anchor was selected after hosting a live show, Robocon, in August in the presence of I&B minister Prakash Javadekar. We trained her for two hours in Mumbai and 45 minutes in Goa," the show's producer said. She said briefing involved instructions on where to stand and camera placement.

Twitterati, however, came out in support of the DD anchor later:
