Once a billionaire, Raju now earns Rs 50/day

HYDERABAD: From poster boy to prisoner; from a billionaire to a mere daily-wager! Jailed Satyam Computers founder Ramalinga Raju's life turned upside down ever since he decided to pen that confession letter in January 2009.

Raju, for whom moolah freely flowed into his coffers before the multi-crore financial fraud, will now have to toil hard in jail to earn a meagre pay of Rs 50 daily. He cannot even spend it all on himself.

According to jail rules, Qaidi no. 4148 (Raju's new identity) will be allowed to use only half that sum for personal purposes daily during his imprisonment.

Raju can buy basic essentials such as soap, toothpaste, biscuits, bread or water bottles from the jail canteen for Rs 25 he would be allowed to spend. The rest would be deposited in an account opened for him at the jail like the rest of the inmates. He can withdraw the money at the end of his term.

But for that 'skilled' Raju has to report to work together with prisoners branded as 'unskilled' and 'semi-skilled'. Unskilled prisoners are made to do chores like cleaning jail premises but do not earn even a penny. Semi-skilled ones get a daily wage of Rs 30, and are largely employed in factories.

Jail authorities were deliberating about various jobs that can be offered to Raju. "We are trying to see where we can fit him in. There are three options right now,'' said a jail official. "Either we will get him to help out in the library and assist in maintaining it or engage him in our adult education programme. We are laying extra attention of late on it under which he can teach illiterate prisoners. The third option is to get Raju involved with the basic computer courses that we offer to our inmates.'' He said the convict will have no say in the matter.

Before the employment, Raju will have to live through a 'quarantine' period in the jail. "For 15 days, we will observe his behaviour. We will see how he is getting adjusted to the jail atmosphere,'' the official said. "So far he has not shown any signs of being disturbed or depressed. That might also be because he has been in jail before.''

Much like Friday, both Ramalinga Raju and his brother Rama Raju had no visitors on Saturday too.
