Miffed with attitude of Sachin and Dhoni, IAF drops plan to fly them in Sukhoi

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 09 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

Miffed with the attitude of Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the IAF has junked its plans to fly the cricketing superstars in Sukhoi.

NEW DELHI: Miffed with the attitude of Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the IAF has junked its plans to fly the cricketing superstars in its most potent supersonic Sukhoi-30MKI fighters.

The cricketers have shown no interest in taking up the offer to fly in the twin-seat Sukhois, which was approved by the defence ministry, for well over one year now.

Neither has Tendulkar attended any IAF function after donning the air warrior's blue uniform with epaulettes and all while being conferred with the honorary rank of a Group Captain in September 2010, leave alone something like the force's 80th anniversary on Monday.

Asked if the government had decided against granting honorary commission to celebrities - Dhoni is a Lt-Colonel in the Army - after its experience with the two cricketers, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said, "No such decision has been taken."

"Sachin Tendulkar is already an honorary Group Captain. That is how it is. We have not taken any decision for the future, this is how it is today. They are not going to fly in any aircraft at this point in time as the IAF is very busy," said Browne after taking the salute on the IAF parade at the Hindon airbase on the outskirts of New Delhi.

ACM Browne's predecessor P V Naik was the one who had offered the two cricketers a sortie on the Sukhois from the Pune airbase.

Tendulkar had expressed interest in the Sukhoi sortie, holding that as a teenager he had been fascinated by the Tom Cruise-starrer 'Top Gun'. But to no avail.

In sharp contrast, the IAF is happy with the way ace shuttler and London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal flew in its Kiran Mark-II trainer aircraft at the IAF Academy in Dundigal in Andhra Pradesh and "motivated" the young cadets there last month.

Varsha Bhosle: Asha Bhosle's daughter had a troubled life

Cops investigating an unlicensed gun that Varsha Bhosle used to shoot herself; the singer was in Singapore at the time of daughter's suicide

Hours after iconic playback singer Asha Bhosle's daughter Varsha Bhosle, 56, shot herself at their Peddar Road residence on Sunday night, police were trying to trace the owner of the Baby Browning .22 pistol that she used to kill herself.

There are two guns in the family - Asha Bhosle's brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar owns a .32 pistol, while her son Anand owns a .45 pistol. However, till late night cops knew nothing about the ownership of the Belgian make Baby Browning that Varsha put to her left temple at pulled the trigger sometime in the night.

Her blood-splattered body was found in the living room of the apartment that was locked from inside. The body was spotted by one of the family's drivers who entered the apartment from Varsha's aunt singer Lala Mangeshkar's neighbouring flat.

Varsha had ordered food from a neighbourhood Chinese joint on Sunday night. Her half-eaten dinner was lying on the table with a half glass of water in the room where her body was found. Both Hridaynath's and Anand's guns are licenced. Hridaynath's gun is registered with the Gamdevi police station and Anand's firearm is registered at the N M Joshi Marg police station.

Asha and Anand, who were away in Singapore, returned to Mumbai on Monday night. Varsha's second brother, who is based in Panchgani, too arrived in the city in the evening. Till the time of going to press, the cops had not questioned them. "The family's in shock. We hope to question some of them late in the night. We would like to know where did she get the Baby Browning gun from," a police officer investigating the case said.

Baby Browning is a miniature gun that requires some training to use. "It's not easy to handle. It fits in your palm. One requires special training to load it. The gun's owner will also be booked for causing death by negligence and under relevant sections of the Arms Act," the officer said.

Asha, family sources said, received a call in her hotel room from her driver in Mumbai telling her that Varsha had hurt herself. "Ashaji immediately rang up a family friend requesting him to rush to Prabhu Kunj and attend to Varsha," said a close family friend. This was not the first time that Varsha had tried killing herself. She had attempted suicide twice before.

No one heard gun shot
DCP (Zone II) Nisar Tamboli said on Monday that the body was found almost 10 hours after Varsha killed herself. "The body's condition suggests the incident may have happened on Sunday night," he said. Police said nobody heard the gun shot, and no suicide note was found.

According to police, Varsha's domestic help Deepali Mane rang the doorbell around 9 am, but no one answered. Worried, she contacted Asha Bhosle's driver. Mane returned around 10.30 am and again, no-one responded to the knocks on the door, following which the driver, Vijay Nakashe, informed Lata Mangeshkar, who resides in the adjacent apartment.

Nakashe entered the flat through Lata Mangeshkar's flat, and found Varsha in a pool of blood on a sofa; the pistol still in her hand, the TV switched on.

Police said Varsha had stopped using her mobile phone for the past many days; hence it was difficult to find out whom she spoke to last. The call records of the landline are being scrutinised, police said.

Sources close to the family said Lata Mangeshkar has been "shattered" by the incident. A family friend said, "Lataji is extremely worried about Asha. To see the sisters, who are in their 80s, to go through such tragedy is gutwrenching. The cops are questioning the family members."

Varsha had married a public relations professional, but the couple divorced in 1998. Police have learnt that she wanted to start an orphanage with fashion photographer Gautam Rajadakshya (he passed away last year). Varsha, who was said to be very close to Rajadhyaksha, was distraught after his death and was under medication for depression. Those close to the family said Asha Bhosle was the only one who was able to handle Varsha's mood swings. "We kept our distance from Varsha because we were never sure how she would react. Asha was the only one who knew how to handle her," a family friend said.

A family friend said, "She led a troubled life. Was it the pressure of being Asha Bhosle's daughter, we will never know. None of the second generation Mangeshkars made it big, but it seems Varsha took it to heart."

Varsha was once asked why she gave up singing, and she said, "If you can't take the heat, don't step into the kitchen." As a child singer, Varsha's voice was used for Dev Anand-starrer Lootmaar. The song, 'Has tu hardam', composed by Rajesh Roshan, became quite popular.

Torrent Group buys bungalow in Delhi's Lutyen’s Zone for Rs 111 crore

Torrent Group buys bungalow in Lutyen's Zone for Rs 111 cr.

Ravi Teja Sharma, ET Bureau | Oct 9, 2012, 07.38AM IST
NEW DELHI: Ahmedabad-based drug-to-power firm Torrent has bought a bungalow in a tony part of Delhi's central diplomatic enclave for Rs 10 lakh per yard, creating a record for the most expensive real estate deal in the city. The bungalow on Dharam Marg in Chanakyapuri, which is situated near the American embassy, stands on a 1,112.4 sq yards plot and was bought jointly by Torrent group companies Torrent Power and Torrent Pharma for Rs 111 crore.

In recent times, similar-sized plots in central Delhi locations like Golf Links and Shanti Niketan have been sold for Rs 8-8.5 lakh a sq yard. Bungalows in the leafy Lutyen's Bungalow Zone (LBZ) sell at a lower tag of Rs 5 lakh a sq yard because of building restrictions and high overall value of the deals.

Torrent is promoted by brothers Sudhir and Samir Mehta, whose father UN Mehta, a government clerk-turned medical representative for drug firm Sandoz, had set up the firm in 1959. The Mehtas' acquisition in Delhi comes close on the heels of another Ahmedabad-based business group, Adani, buying a bungalow in Golf Links for Rs 140 crore.

Industrialist Sandeep Jajodia, who is the head of sponge iron maker Monnet Ispat & Energy, bought a bungalow in an area outside LBZ, in Shanti Niketan for Rs 170 crore for his personal use.

While there is an overall slowdown in property transactions across the country as people wait for a correction, property prices in the ultra-rich segment have not seen any decline. Property market experts say that while the number of transactions has come down even in these parts of the city, pricing has not been impacted because of the limited supply available for sale at any given point of time.

Torrent Group closed the deal for this property a few weeks ago and got it registered jointly in the name of Torrent Power and Torrent Pharma in September. ET has reviewed property papers for the transaction. An email sent to the Torrent Group did not elicit any response and Torrent Group's purpose for buying the plot could not be immediately ascertained.purpose for buying the plot could not be immediately ascertained.

According to Delhi's building bylaws, plots in the area are allowed a floor area ratio of 1.5, which means the Torrent Group can build close to 15,000 sq ft on the plot, excluding a basement.

The plot bought by Torrent Group is just outside the LBZ, which is home to wealthy businessmen and top politicians and where such Rs 100-crore plus transactions are a regular.

The LBZ is home to parliamentarian Naveen Jindal, who bought a bungalow on Mansingh Road for Rs 150 crore a few years back. His neighbours include the likes of Steel tycoon LN Mittal, Bharti Group founder and chairman Sunil Mittal, Sanjay Singhal of Bhushan Steel and KP Singh, chairman of DLF.

Robert Vadra calls India banana republic, activists mango people

Written By Unknown on Senin, 08 Oktober 2012 | 22.14

Robert Vadra and India Against Corruption members sparred on online social media after Vadra posted a contemptuous message about the anti-corruption activism in the country.

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra and India Against Corruption members on Monday sparred on online social media after Vadra posted a contemptuous message about the anti-corruption activism in the country.

Vadra wrote on his Facebook page: "Mango people in banana republic."

The Facebook status update comes two days after the Indian Against Corruption (IAC), a newly formed political party, alleged that the son-in-law of the country's ruling party chief Sonia Gandhi had indulged in real-estate corruption.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan and activist Arvind Kejriwal on Friday alleged that Vadra had received interest free loan from DLF and purchased real estate property at throw away prices. Both Vadra and DLF have denied the allegations.

On Monday, soon after Vadra posted his Facebook status, IAC member Kumar Vishwas demanded an apology from him.
"Vadra's mother-in-law has been ruling the country so he should explain why India is being called a "banana republic," Vishwas said.

Who is Arvind Kejriwal? asks Akhilesh Yadav

Akhilesh was speaking at an event to mark the closure of a three-day Dolphin Census in Uttar Pradesh.

LUCKNOW: On a day when political circles were busy defending or making fresh allegations against Gandhi son-in-law Robert Vadhra for acquiring undervalued property in return for favours, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav added a new spin to the tale after he claimed he did not know who India Against Corruption activist Arvind Kejiwal was. Akhilesh was speaking at an event to mark the closure of a three-day Dolphin Census in Uttar Pradesh.

The comments came after the chief minister was asked to comment on the on-going war of words being exchanged between Kejriwal after he alleged Vadhra had acquired property worth Rs 300 crore in return for undue favours for real estate giants DLF. Responding to queries, Akhilesh, with a smile, said, "Kejriwal kaun hain?" (who is Kejriwal?), leading to much mirth among those present.

Though seen as a clever political manoeuvre by the UP chief minister to stay out of the political imbroglio, Sunday's clear dismissal of the controversy is also suggestive of Samajwadi Party's unwillingness to take on Congress just yet. Not everyone in the Samajwadi camp, however, has maintained a stoic silence on the subject. On Sunday, senior Samajwadi leader Azam Khan, while participating in an event in Varanasi, said a probe should be conducted against Vadhra for the allegations levelled against him. While Congress leaders have been at pains to maintain this is nothing but an attempt by Kejriwal to malign Vadhra's image, other opposition parties like the Bharatiya Janta Party have also demanded a probe against Vadhra.

On Friday, India Against Corruption (IAC) activists Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal alleged that realty giant DLF gave properties, currently valued at around Rs 500 crore, to Sonia Gandhi's son-in law Robert Vadra at grossly undervalued rates in exchange for favours it allegedly received from Congress state governments in Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi.

A day later, however, DLF refuted all charges.

Oral sex good for women’s health

Oral sex good for women's health (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

Oral sex is good for women's health and makes them feel happier, a study which studied the effects of semen's "mood-altering chemicals" has claimed.

The State University of New York study, which scientists carried out via survey rather than through practical experiment, compared the sex lives of 293 females to their mental health.

It follows research, which shows that seminal fluid contains chemicals that elevates mood, increases affection, induces sleep and also contains at least three anti-depressants.

The researchers also claimed that women who have regular unprotected sex are less depressed and perform better on cognitive tests.

Semen contains another of chemicals along with spermatozoa, including cortisol, which is known to increase affection, estrone, which elevates mood and oxytocin, which also elevates mood, the Daily Mail reported.

It also contains thyrotropin-releasing hormone (another antidepressant), melatonin (a sleep-inducing agent), and even serotonin (perhaps the best-known antidepressant neurotransmitter).

Given these ingredients - and this is just a small sample of the mind-altering "drugs" found in human semen - Researchers Gallup and Burch, along with the psychologist Steven Platek, hypothesised that women having unprotected sex should be less depressed than suitable control participants.

To investigate whether semen has antidepressant effects, the authors rounded up 293 college females from the university's Albany campus, who agreed to fill out an anonymous questionnaire about various aspects of their sex lives.

Recent sexual activity without condoms was used as an indirect measure of seminal plasma circulating in the woman's body.

Each participant also completed the Beck Depression Inventory, a commonly used clinical measure of depressive symptoms.

The most significant findings from this study were that, even after adjusting for frequency of sexual intercourse, women who engaged in sex and "never" used condoms showed significantly fewer depressive symptoms than did those who "usually" or "always" used condoms.

Importantly, these chronically condom-less, sexually active women also evidenced fewer depressive symptoms than did those who abstained from sex altogether.

By contrast, sexually active heterosexual women, including self-described "promiscuous" women, who used condoms were just as depressed as those practicing total abstinence.

The research suggests it is not just that women who are having sex are simply happier, but happiness appears to be a function of the seminal fluid pulsing through one's veins.

The study is published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

I can handle negativity, says Robert Vadra as Congress, BJP spar

I can handle all negativity, says Robert Vadra

I can handle all negativity, says Robert Vadra

NEW DELHI: Caught in a controversy over allegations that he was favoured by realty major DLF, Robert Vadra on Saturday broke his silence saying he can "handle all the negativity" even as Congress and BJP sparred over the issue.

DLF insisted that its "business relationship" with Vadra or his companies had been conducted in individual capacity as per the "highest standards of ethics and transparency" and that it had "not received any undue benefit from any state government or any government authorities in any part of India".

DLF said in a statement that no unsecured loans were provided by it.

Arvind Kejriwal, who levelled allegations against Vadra, son-in-law of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, at a press conference here yesterday, said he was ready to face defamation case if his charges were proved untrue.

He had alleged that property worth Rs 300 crore was given at throwaway prices by DLF to companies owned by Vadra with an unsecured interest free loan of Rs 65 crore from given by the realty firm.

Without getting into specifics of the allegations, sources close to Vadra quoted him as saying that he "can handle all the negativity".

Apparently suggesting that he had seen worse situations, he stated, "(I) lost people I loved ... what can be worse".

Congress leadership continued to come to Vadra's defence. Transactions between two private individuals could not be questioned on the basis of "implied act of corruption", finance minister P Chidambaram said in Mumbai.

The AICC, too, came in support of the 43-year-old businessman married to Priyanka Gandhi, with party spokesman Manish Tewari rejecting demands for a probe into the matter asking "an inquiry into what?"

BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad told reporters in Jaipur that "it is the expectation of people of the country that the matter should be investigated. It should also be probed what benefits Congress state governments in Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi gave to Vadra."

Shahid Kapoor gains weight and loses film

Shahid Kapoor has been having it tough over the past few months. One of his films, a Hindi remake of South film Vettai was canned, while he opted out of a Maneesh Sharma film that also didn't take off. He was gung-ho about both projects and underwent weight training for the two very different roles, to no avail.

For the Vettai remake, he had to beef up and for Maneesh's film, he had to lose weight as he played a college-going boy in the latter film. After six months of hardcore weight-training for Vettai, he learned that the film had been canned. He got himself back on his feet and proceeded to lose weight for Maneesh's film.

After eight years of regular gymming, Shahid took a break of four months in order to look unmuscular. He reportedly left this film because of differences between him and the producers.

Shahid's personal trainer Abbas Ali confirmed, "Shahid lost four kgs of muscle weight for Maneesh's film. He lost metabolism. He was demotivated. He's 31 and a vegetarian and it isn't easy for him to fluctuate his workout and diet."

With the Kapoor boy now working on a muscular look for Prabhudheva's Namak, which goes on floors in four months, training the actor was an uphill task. Says Abbas, "I had to motivate Shahid to get back. He underwent mental endurance training... yoga and meditation. For someone who hadn't missed the gym for a day for the past eight years, the past couple of months have been tough. Shahid is however, back and has been regularly training for a month now. I had to train his mind first."

Meanwhile, Shahid chose not to respond to this story when we tried to get in touch with him.

Girl molested in full public view in Lucknow

LUCKNOW: In a shocking incident which indicated the deteriorating law and order in Uttar Pradesh (UP) under Samajwadi Party (SP) government, a miscreant allegedly tried to tear the clothes of a girl in broad daylight in the state capital when she slapped him in retaliation to regular harassment. Even more shocking is the fact that the police initially refused to register the complaint of the girl. It was only after the girl met the senior superintendent of police (SSP) along with her father, her FIR was registered and the accused boy was arrested.

Resident of Khandari Bazaar locality in Kaiserbagh area, the girl was returning home after attending sewing and embroidery classes on Thursday when the accused, Om Kumar intercepted and caught hold of her hand. The girl slapped the boy with the other hand and tried to break free. However, the accused tried to tear her clothes in full public view. In the scuffle, some part of girl's shirt was torn. The girl cried for help but people in the street did not stop or caught the boy. However, a woman came forward and covered the girl with her duppatta. The victim was also escorted to her home by the woman. Later, the girl and her father went to lodge a complaint at Khandari Bazaar police outpost. However, they were shocked when the police allegedly told them to compromise because by lodging a complaint the girl would get undue publicity and would adversely affect her marriage prospect.

The girl and her father came back home. However, they decided not to keep quit after such a humiliation. On Friday, they went to the office of SSP R K Chaturvedi and narrated their story. The SSP office called up Kaiserbagh police station and directed officers to lodge the complaint. The Khandari Bazara police outpost comes under Kaiserbagh police station. Girl's father later told reporters that after SSP's intervention, their complaint was registered and police swung into action. The accused was also arrested late on Friday night. After arrest, the boy accepted that he used to follow the girl but denied allegations of trying to tear her clothes. "I proposed her and simply asked her to reply in yes or no and left," he said. However, the victim said that the boy was following and pestering her since long. The girl said that she told the boy several times not to follow her but to no avail.

Though the accused was arrested, the incident created ripples in the city. Several women organisations including All India Democratic Women's Association condemned the incident and demanded action against the police officials who initially refused to lodge the complaint of the girl. Significantly, on October 1, IAS officer Shashi Bhushan was arrested by the government railway police (GRP) on charges of trying to molest a woman on Lucknow Mail. The allegations are that the GRP also tried to pressurise the woman to compromise and withdraw her complaint. However, the victim remained firm on her stand forcing the GRP to arrest the officer. Later, on chief minister's order strict sections of the IPC were slapped on the officer. However, the accused was granted bail on October 3. He denied allegations and accused the woman of making a casteist remark against him.
