CCTV footage showed the man, later identified as D Shanmugham, a program analyst with Cognizant Technology Solutions, standing near an escalator at 3.24pm. "The next moment, he was falling down," a police officer said. "He hit the ground, suffered head injuries, and bled to death."
Police said Shanmugham messaged a few friends that he was going to commit suicide, minutes before he took the extreme step. "Before jumping, he deleted close to 9,000 messages and 198 phone numbers from his cellphone. He, however, retained the number of his father and a friend, identified as GV," said the officer.
Shanmugham, who was employed in Coimbatore for the past one-and-a-half years, had come to Chennai on Monday for a training session. "We think he came to the mall to meet somebody. He had done his shopping and had two chocolates in his bag," said a senior police officer. Police collected the CCTV footage which shows him falling.
Officers who saw the footage said he was seen alone before the fall. They ruled out the possibility of his slipping and falling as the railings were high enough to prevent even a tall person from tripping over. A friend said Shanmugham was in a relationship, but never discussed it with anyone.
His body was sent for postmortem to the Government Royapettah Hospital. Shanmugham's father, Deivanayagam, is an engineer at a wind farm in Tuticorin, police said.
