(Sonia Gandhi sent the newly…)
HYDERABAD: For three days in a row last week, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi refused meeting chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy to discuss a Rs 80,000-crore financial package for Telangana, saying through an emissary, that it was pointless to talk about packages and a final call would be taken by the Congress core committee, top sources in the CMO said.
Sources in Hyderabad said party president Sonia Gandhi not only turned down a meeting request on discussing the nitty-gritties of a financial package, but sent the newly crowned AICC general secretary incharge of AP affairs Digvijaya Singh to convey her decision to the waiting CM.
The package prepared with an outlay of Rs 80,000 crore, included taking up the Pranahita-Chevella project to irrigate 16.5 lakh acres in the Telangana region and improving the backward regions in the presentation by Kiran Reddy, known as a strong voice for united Andhra Pradesh.
"Very few officers were involved in the preparation of the package and the matter was kept confidential," the source confided.
Government sources said the chief minister was confident of convincing Sonia on the efficacy of the package and his ability to silence the T-zealots in the party and outside.
But his presentation to some leaders did not inspire any enthusiasm and none of the leaders connected to Andhra Pradesh could organize a meeting with Sonia, sources said.
Later Digvijay Singh, according to sources, drove down to AP Bhavan on Wednesday night to meet the CM who was anxiously waiting for a call from 10 Janpath.
The veteran politician spent nearly two and half hours with Kiran Reddy explaining what exactly the party was thinking on Telangana and the state. The AICC general secretary reportedly explained to him about the futility of giving a presentation on financial package when the party was clear what to announce after deliberation during the core committee meeting on Telangana within a fortnight.
"Digvijay Singh had given him a clear indication of the shape of the things to come and asked him to get ready to face the consequences," a top source told TOI.
A none too enthused chief minister had to return home without meeting Sonia last Thursday at a time when the state was agog with speculation that state was destined for bifurcation.
Meawhile in Bangalore, Digivjay Singh said a bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh could strengthen the Congress greatly in South India.
"I have requested the PCC chief, the chief minister and the deputy chief minister to prepare roadmaps for both options; Option one is bifurcation of the state and option two keeping the state united," Singh told the media there.
"And after the roadmaps are prepared , we will put them up before the high command for the final decision. Andhra Pradesh leadership has agreed to abide by the decision of the high command", Singh added.
