"We did not form this party so that it would have a high command culture...there is serious danger of that happening," says Prashant Bhushan.

Refuting allegations of supporting the splinter group of Aam Aadmi Party rebels, AVAM, or conspiring to replace party chief Arvind Kejriwal, founding-member Prashant Bhushan says the accusations are just a ploy to divert attention from the real issues.

In your letter, you have raised certain issues related to the party not adhering to its founding principles. Are you disappointed that it has been depicted as a personality clash?

Yes, I am disappointed because it's not an issue of personality or whether who should remain in the political affairs committee or national executive. These concern basic principles of accountability, transparency and Swaraj that the party was founded on. Raising issues like referendum on Kashmir...what can be more ridiculous that that! The issue has not been discussed in any meeting for the past two years.

You have also said that AAP was in danger of becoming a one-person centric party with a high command culture?

There is a great danger of that happening. We did not form this party so that it would have a high command culture...there is serious danger of that happening. I told Arvind 'you have some remarkable qualities but you have some weaknesses....and you may be wrong sometimes.' I said 'we must set up such systems that it's not your writ that should prevail in decision-making.' On some issues of principles, I put my foot down. I feel we have to be absolutely firm on our ethical principles but Arvind differs at times and says we need to make certain compromises in politics.

Ashish Khetan has said that your family would like to control party affairs, that you wanted it to become a one-family party?

These are ridiculous statements. I have never asked for anything, nor has my father. My sister left a lucrative job to help put systems in place but only as an advisor for organizational development. My father has always wanted that the party remains on the ideals it was formed with. He has some opinions that are best known to him but I have time and again differed on them.

Did you support AVAM legally or through funds?

This is absurd. As chairman of the disciplinary committee, an appeal came to me from Karan Singh related to sms that was circulated urging volunteers to join BJP. I said the sms needs to be investigated but Arvind did not want any investigation. Karan Singh then lodged an FIR and the police investigation found that the person who sent the sms was Deepak Chaudhury.

You have also raised the issue of lack of transparency in finances.

There are some slippages in funding when it turned out that Rs 2 crore came from shell companies. It was a lapse on our part in checking those companies. There have also been slippages in putting our expenses online.

Are you hopeful of some recourse?

Let's see, I am not interested in any position whether it is of PAC or NE. I have only sought structural changes to make decision-making more broadbased and a collective effort. We need to put some systems in place.
