Delhi election 2015: AAP says new BJP ad targets Kejriwal's 'gotra', seeks apology; BJP hits back

NEW DELHI: BJP on Monday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of taking offence to 'everything but their own acts', after the latter demanded a public apology for an advertisement published by the former.

"The AAP takes offence to everything except their own acts. If they introspect, perhaps they will become a more responsible party," said BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli.

Meanwhile, BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao accused AAP of using the issue of caste to gain political support.

"AAP is stooping very low in electoral politics; they are latching on to every effort to drag caste in their electoral calculations," said Rao.

Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party slammed BJP for its latest ad issued in major papers on Monday morning, the third of the series that started on Friday.

Talking about Arvind Kejriwal threatening to stall Republic Day celebrations last year, BJP said Kejriwal's gotra or sub caste is 'updravi' or anarchist.

Kejriwal said that this was an insult to the entire Agarwal community to which he belongs.

"I did not do anything when BJP brought my children into political discourse, I did not react to Monday's ad even though BJP has stooped to making personal remarks, but today's advertisement insults an entire community of people," he said.

The party has threatened to complain to the Election Commission and asked BJP to apologize.

Sources said that AAP supporters are planning protests against BJP, but AAP was unable to confirm these reports.

The ad targeting AAP's Arvind Kejriwal:

The BJP advertisement targets Kejriwal for threatening to disrupt the Republic Day parade last year while complaining this year that he was not been invited for the event.

"Desh ke karodon log gantantra divas ko rashtriya parv mante hain, us par garv karte hain (The country's crores of people consider Republic Day as a national festival and feel proud about it). Aur apka updravi gotra isme vyavdhan dalne ko taiyar tha (And your trouble maker community was ready to disrupt it).

"This is unacceptable and they should apologize from the entire community. We will complain to EC that BJP has stooped down to racial attacks. Delhi's people do not like this abusive politics," Kejriwal said.

The AAP chief also called a meeting of top party leaders at his residence to deliberate on the issue.

AAP leader Ashutosh came down heavily on the BJP, saying people will teach the saffron party a lesson in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections.

"BJP stooped another low. Now it has attacked Kejriwal's gotra in today's advertisement. People belonging to his gotra will teach BJP Lesson (sic)," he said on Twitter.

Kejriwal has often described himself as a "baniya" to reach out to traders' community, which have traditionally supported BJP.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) last week also took a swipe at the BJP for its newspaper advertisement in which Anna Hazare's sketch was shown with a garland, asking the saffron party whether it had had "killed" the veteran anti-corruption crusader.
