A day before the assembly polls result and two days after exit poll survey predicted clean sweep for the saffron brigade, state BJP leaders kept themselves busy in speculating about the party's chief ministerial candidate.
BJP did not project any chief ministerial candidate in Jharkhand as in Maharashtra and Haryana. Keeping the party's earlier strategy in mind, many BJP workers in the state are already prepared for "a surprise", said a party insider on condition of anonymity.
The fact that the final decision will be taken by the party's central leadership in Delhi could not stop former chief minister Arjun Munda from going to Delhi on Monday. His aides, however, said the purpose of the visit was "personal". "As per established norm, the elected representatives will elect their legislative party leader. After that, the central leadership will make an announcement," said former MP and senior party leader Ajay Maroo.
Maroo said names of non-MLA leaders would not be considered for the chief minister's post and added that the issue of tribal origin would not be considered while naming the CM. Party's national vice president Raghuvar Das skirted questions on who would be the chief minister. Asked if he was in the race, Das said the parliamentary board would convene its meeting and central leadership would make a final announcement. "Let them decide, no state leader is in a position to comment," he said.
Party insiders believe that the preference of the central leadership would depend upon the number of seats BJP bags in the 81-member House.
In case of a comfortable majority, the party may go ahead experimenting with a new face, but in case of a hard-earned simple majority, a good crisis manager would be appointed to ensure smooth functioning of the government.
Meanwhile, a BJP section of leaders and workers are not completely convinced by the exit poll prediction. Their concerns stem from an internal assessment by RSS members at grassroots level that shows the NDA may fall short by one or two seats of the magic figure of 41. "Though in any case, BJP-Ajsu Party coalition is going to form the government the path is not likely to be smooth," said an RSS leader who was part of the 'jansampark' programme before the election.
