Speaking to reporters after apologizing in Parliament, the minister refused to respond to opposition demand for her resignation and said, "I have said sorry over my remarks and I will speak no further on the issue."
"What else can I do?" she asked.
Addressing an election rally in Delhi Niranjan Jyoti had said, "People of Delhi have to decide if they want a government of Ramzaadon (followers of Ram) or a government of those who are illegitimate."She went on to say that Muslims, Christians were all children of Ram.
The minister said she was apologizing as she did not want her party to be embarrassed over her remarks.
The government has indicated that there will be no further action against the minister.
Urban development minister and senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said it has been a part of parliamentary practice that when a person apologizes the matter is laid to rest.
The BJP, meanwhile, desperately tried to defend the minister.
While one BJP leader called the minister's controversial statement a 'slip of tongue', another defended her by saying "she is a first-time MP and hence does not know how to conduct herself."
