The men and women, cringing and sitting on the ground with fear writ large on their faces, began to wail in despair as soon as they heard it. Some raised their hands towards the sky and loudly asked for forgiveness from god.
'You have committed a crime'
The clerics, though, were unrelenting. Mudassir Khan, one of the leaders who visited the slum at Madhu Nagar, where the conversion had taken place, heaped more woe on the frightened lot. "You will have to re-marry, re-revise the Quran and have to re-follow all important aspects of Islam to become Muslim again," he thundered.

"Do the nikah again, make your children go through the Quran again and keep your women in purdah. Only then will you be granted mercy. You have committed a crime."

In the mass conversion, which the Hindu outfit leading the charge called "re-conversion", the slum dwellers, mostly Bengali Muslim rag pickers, had gone through an elaborate ritual that saw them washing the feet of Hindu gods, putting vermilion marks on their forehead and eating prashad. A "shuddhikaran hawan" (purification ceremony) was held and the Dharma Jagran Samanvay Vibhag, an offshoot of the RSS, and Bajrang Dal, triumphantly called it "purkho ke ghar vapasi" (the return home of our ancestors).

Toothless and frail, Sufia Begum, 76, one of the oldest members of the slum colony who had on Monday said "Ishwar and Allah are the same", couldn't stop tears from rolling down her face. Clerics who had barged into her hut were heard telling her she still had time to repent. She then looked at them and cried, "Aami aar korbo na, amay maaf koro, mullah." (I will not do this again. Please forgive me).

Pushed into a corner, Ismile, who seemed to be their leader, said, "They fooled us in the name of ration cards and BPL cards. We were told that they want to do a puja in our slum as the plot is owned by a Hindu. We just took part in it and before we knew it they proclaimed that we have been converted. Soon, the media arrived."
He then bowed at the feet of Maulana Masroor Raza Quadri of the Tehriq Tehafuz Sunniat, who was in no mood to humour the man. Annoyed at Ismile's "transgression", Quadri told him, "You made a mockery of our religion. You will never be forgiven by Allah."
