The move to boycott the function shows that the two allies are set to part ways with bitterness and rancour, political analysts said.
Should Matoshree formalize its decision to not be the BJP's post-poll ally, the Fadnavis government will face formidable opposition from the 63-strong Sena legislature party in the assembly for the next five years. This will mark the beginning of a new era in state politics, said analysts.
However, a section in the Sena expressed cautious optimism late Thursday evening that a last-minute reconciliation formula could be hammered out by Friday.
Sources said a decision on whether to continue talks with the BJP or not will be made by Uddhav by Saturday. The Sena will announce its final decision in the first week of November.
The Sena's decision to stay out of the government came after BJP firmly turned down Matoshree's demand for 14 ministerial berths, including seven of cabinet rank.
The Sena also wanted two of its senior functionaries to be sworn in on Friday, along with Fadnavis and his cabinet team.

But BJP leader and the party's Maharashtra observer Rajiv Pratap Rudy posted a tweet on Thursday rejecting the Sena's demand. Striking a politically correct note, Rudy added that talks with the Sena would be continued to find a way out of the stalemate.
"The BJP turning down our demand to induct two ministers has come as the last straw," said a senior Sena functionary. "We have not been treated with respect which a party with a strength of 63 legislators deserves," the Sena functionary added.
However, the BJP state leadership too was furious on Thursday, it is learnt, because of a message containing derogatory language purportedly circulated by the Aditya Thackeray-led Yuva Sena on a social networking site.
The message made fun of the BJP's demand that the Sena should offer apologies for describing PM Narendra Modi and the entire BJP campaign team led by Amit Shah as Afzal Khan's army and for a recent editorial in Hindi Saamna pouring ridicule on the PM. "Such messages will do no good to Sena-BJP ties," said a key party functionary.

Sources said the Sena took too long to decide on whether to be part of the government and kept harping on its 'honour' theme, which didn't cut much ice with BJP especially in the wake of the Sena's continuing attacks on the BJP leadership.
"We can't attend the swearing-in function if the Sena's prestige is not honoured," Sena MP Vinayak Raut told mediapersons.
BJP observer Om Prakash Mathur said his party had done nothing to impinge on the Sena's honour.
A man of few words, Mathur said it was not necessary to offer comments on whatever the Sena said. The erstwhile Sangh pracharak's body language reflected the BJP's tough stance vis-a-vis the Sena.
