Fadnavis’s banker wife to seek transfer from Nagpur

NAGPUR : It could be a first of sorts. Maharashtra's chief minister will have a working wife. Amruta Fadnavis is an associate vice-president with Axis Bank and heads its business branch in Nagpur.

"I will relocate to Mumbai when I get a transfer," Amruta told TOI after her husband was formally named chief minister-designate on Tuesday. "Nothing is certain as yet. We will take these decisions later. As of now, my daughter is studying here and I have a job."

She and her 5-year-old daughter Divija left for Mumbai on an evening flight soon after they got news of Devendra Fadnavis's elevation. The family watched the announcement on television. The greetings started on the plane. "A number of people came up to wish me," said Amruta after landing in Mumbai.

Divija is currently in senior KG at a top Nagpur school. On schooling in Mumbai, Amruta said, "We are yet to take a decision."

Fadnavis's mother, Sarita, too plans to shift to Mumbai once her son settles into Varsha—the official residence of the CM. Showing remarkable composure in handling the media, Saritatai, as she is lovingly called, said she is worried about her granddaughter. "It is for her sake that I want to shift to Mumbai.

She said Divija is used to a house full of people. "Varsha is a huge place and there would be very few people there. I wonder if she will be able to cope. (But) she is very observant and a quick learner. Mumbai can make a person mature very fast. I don't want Divija to lose her innocence early living there."

The grandmother is not averse to Divija picking up lessons in politics early in life. "I don't mind if she takes up a political career. Her father learnt well from his father (Gangadharrao Fadnavis, a BJP member of the state legislative council) and Divija will be able to learn from Devendra," she said.

The 5-year-old is fond of her granny. "When we are out, Divija keeps looking back to see if I am walking along and comfortable," said Sarita Fadnavis, who will leave for Mumbai on Wednesday for Friday's swearing-in of her son at Wankhede Stadium.
