Cyclone Hudhud: Andhra Pradesh braces for ‘very severe’ storm today

HYDERABAD: Reclassified as a "very severe cyclonic storm" by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hudhud continued to gather force ahead of reaching Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh by Sunday. The cyclone will persist for nearly six hours post-landfall in the morning and peak by noon. It is expected to subsequently weaken over the next six hours while moving north-westwards across south Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Andhra officials said they will temporarily relocate 5 lakh people, who will be accommodated across 370 relief camps by Sunday morning. Srikakulam and East Godavari, expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone's fury, account for the maximum number of evacuations. By Saturday afternoon, officials claim over 1.1 lakh people had already been evacuated.

Though not a "super cyclone", the Met on Saturday night upgraded the possible wind speed of the cyclonic storm from 155kmph to 195kmph. Met officials warned that strong winds and heavy rainfall were likely to disrupt electricity and telecommunications services as well as road and rail traffic along the coast.

On Saturday, the approaching cyclone brought heavy rains to coastal AP and south Odisha, and several places have already experienced wall collapses and washing away of roads. Vizianagaram and East Godavari in AP and Ganjam and Gajaptinagaram districts in Odisha are expected to be hit hard.

As the severity of the storm is expected to intensify, the weather department says all nine coastal districts may be affected. Allaying concerns, Union earth science minister Jitendra Singh said Hudhud is "very severe" in scientific terms, but certainly not a "super cyclone". He appealed to people "not to get unduly alarmist" because the concerned departments are already geared up for any eventuality.

Modi briefed

In an emergency high-level meeting to review preparedness on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on evacuation and other precautionary and preparatory measures being undertaken for coping with the cyclone. The PM asked home minister Rajnath Singh to remain in touch with the chief ministers of the states likely to be affected by it.

The official statement said, "He (Modi) instructed senior officers of the union government to maintain close contact and coordination with officers of the affected states to ensure that relief and rescue operations proceed smoothly. He said suitable arrangements should be made to inform people about the cyclone on a real-time basis."

The measures include deployment of teams from the armed forces and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), depletion of reservoirs to accommodate cyclonic rainwater, positioning of boats, swimmers and relief camps and standby systems to restore power and telecom services, the statement said.

Fifty-four naval boats, 689 swimmers, 30 rescue teams, one column of army and 16 NDRF teams are already on stand-by to carry out rescue and relief operations once the cyclone makes landfall.

Train services to the coast remained suspended due to the cyclone. Apart from control rooms set up by the state across various district headquarters, phone service providers are running special helpline numbers to assist people in tracking the locations of their near and dear ones.

By Monday, the cyclone is expected to weaken into a depression, triggering heavy rainfall as it passes through Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
