The young actress, who began her career in 2002 as a child artiste, had won a National Award a few years ago. She acted in movies in various languages, including Hindi and Telugu.
In Tollywood, she played a lead role in a commercial hit released in 2008. However, after that film, she did not get many opportunities and for the past couple of years she was jobless.
The actress has been operating from Mumbai and on Sunday night she was caught inflagrant delicto or a sexual act in a decoy operation of the Hyderabad Task Force police at a star hotel on Road Number 2, Banjara Hills.
Police arrested one Anjaneyulu alias Balu, an assistant director who acted as a pimp, and shifted the young actress to a rescue home in Falaknuma area for rehabilitation. In her statement to police, she confessed that she got into sex work to support her financial needs.
"The woman told us that despite best efforts, she was unable to get any movie roles. To support herself in Mumbai, she took to prostitution. She also said she was lured into prostitution by people like Balu, who cited examples of other actresses who took to prostitution to get money and also opportunities," an investigating officer said.
The actress told police that she came to Hyderabad on August 30 to attend Santosham South Indian Film Awards function and at the event she met Balu. "Balu convinced me to accept the work and he booked the hotel room," the actress said in her statement to police.
She reportedly charged Rs 1 lakh for a night and brokers like Balu got paid Rs 15,000 as commission. The actress said she had been thrice to Hyderabad on sex—work this year.
