Though the campaigners blamed ill-health for the party convener's no-show, the incident created a ripple in "Battleground Varanasi", where Kejriwal is pitted against Narendra Modi.
Several theories abound about the development. With only two days to go, is AAP busy putting 'basics' in place as it lacks local cadre? Or, has the party turned complacent following the 'huge' turnout at Friday's roadshow which party workers claim was more than the crowd present during Modi's nomination day. Or, has the saffron imprint on the city put AAP on the backfoot on the last day of campaigning?
State coordinator of AAP Vaibhav Maheshwari dismissed all theories, saying, "There was a huge turnout in Friday's roadshow. It was pre-decided that AAP leaders Jaaved Jaaferi and Yogendra Yadav would hold fort on Saturday."
Whatever be the reason, hundreds of people who waited to catch a glimpse of Kejriwal at Pandeypur Chauraha were disappointed to know that the leader they were rooting for was not coming. Thousands of volunteers who had arrived from all over the country to distribute the party's electioneering material and for door-to-door campaigning, however, made the show look grand.
The roadshow started two hours behind schedule from Kajapura. At the next stop, Panchkosi Chauraha, it was reigning enthusiasm for AAP supporters till a group of BJP supporters wearing saffron caps and stoles and Modi masks started dancing to the tunes of dhols with the AAP bandwagon. "See, they do this deliberately but they do not realize that they only help us (AAP) by indulging in hooliganism," said trader Khurshid Khan.
Too many roadshows, too, spoilt the scene. At Pandeypur AAP supporters ran into Samajwadi Party's bikers and supporters marching on foot. Minor disruptions were caused by a group of BJP supporters again.
