World Twenty20: Some selection headache for India

DHAKA: Mohit Sharma or Mohammed Shami? This is the question that will bother India captain MS Dhoni ahead of the semifinal against South Africa on Friday.

Shami, who has played non-stop since October 23 and is probably mentally weary, if not physically so, has struggled with his accuracy. He has leaked runs in the shorter formats since the tour of South Africa.

In the World T20, he has been expensive in both warm-up matches as well as the main fixtures and barring the game against Pakistan (4-0-31-1), he has not even completed his quota of overs.

In contrast, Mohit Sharma, the Haryana pacer who represents Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, impressed in the only game he played against Australia on Sunday. While he bowled only two overs for 11 runs, he managed to get the wicket of Shane Watson with a sharp in-cutter.

Having captained him at CSK, Dhoni knows he can control the game better with Sharma, as he is more accurate and can move the ball too. What also gives Dhoni the security is the fact that he can stand up to the stumps with him in the attack, like in the game against Australia. He does that in the IPL too.

With South Africa having the likes of AB de Villiers and JP Duminy, batsmen who can play innovative shots like the scoop and the reverse hit, Dhoni may go with the accuracy of Sharma rather than the pace of Shami.

"It's a good headache to have," the skipper told media persons after India's win over Australia and said he was undecided over who to play.

Team avoids football following injury to Yuvraj

Meanwhile, India shunned football and stuck to cricket at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah as they trained sans Yuvraj Singh on Wednesday.

Yuvraj, who had injured himself while playing barefoot football on Tuesday in Dhaka, took a break from training on Wednesday. "As a precautionary measure he is taking rest," media manager Dr RN Baba stated in a media release.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan took first strike in the nets, which indicated that the team management may think of reverting to the left-hand-right hand combination.

They may be compelled to do that if Yuvraj fails to recover in time. Rahane, in that case, may get the No. 4 spot.

The batsmen, including Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni, practised extensively against the short ball as they expect a barrage from the likes of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.

The bowlers too had an extended nets and towards the end Mohit Sharma was struck by a fierce drive off the bat of Ravindra Jadeja, but the injury didn't appear serious as the bowler was back to take high catches.
