He then scored 70 in 38 balls to turn around the semifinal of the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 at the Kingsmead, in Durban, in September 2007. And then, when all seemed lost in the quarterfinal of the 2011 World Cup clash at Motera, he came in and belted 57 not out off 65 balls to take the team through.
On Sunday, at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium, Yuvraj's (60, 43 balls, 5x4, 4x6) familiar foes once again produced the best out of him. India had lost the toss and were put into bat by George Bailey, something they haven't done all through the tournament.
He walked into bat with India at 44 for 2 after the dismissal of India's best batsman, Virat Kohli for 23 and struggled for the first 13 balls in which he scored just six. A four through cover off Doug Bollinger gave him the injection of self-belief.
The quick dismissals of Ajinkya Rahane 19 (16 balls, 2x4), drafted into the side in place of the struggling Shikhar Dhawan, and Suresh Raina too didn't seem to have any effect.
Dhoni arrived at the crease and it must have brought back some happy memories for Yuvraj, who has played some of his finest knocks in limited-overs cricket in the company of the Indian skipper. James Muirhead dropped a couple short in the 14th over and Yuvraj rediscovered the six-hitter in him with two hits into the grandstand at mid-wicket. The prince was back in business.
He proved that with another six off Mitchell Starc over long-off in the 17th over. Watson then bowled a full toss on his legs which Yuvraj whipped into the stand to bring up his fifty.
With two overs to go, India, who were 147 for 4 and had their two best finishers of all time, looked poised for a total in excess of 160, but the wickets of Dhoni and Yuvraj in quick succession, checked their progress and they ended up with 159 for 7. The pair added 84 in 42 balls to provide momentum to the innings.
India looked like they were at least 20 runs short of what was required. But their new-ball bowlers, Mohit Sharma who came into the side in place of Md Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled accurately to put the Aussies under pressure.
The break through was provided by R Ashwin, who dismissed Finch caught by Kohli at mid-off. Kumar dismissed White caught by Jadeja at mid-off for a duck and Mohit Sharma castled Shane Watson for 1.
Maxwell (23 off 12 balls) threatened to unleash carnage by hitting three sixes. However, he attempted a needless reverse hit off Ashwin to be bowled for 23 (12 balls). Warner too fell slogging Ashwin.
Ashwin grabbed 4 for 11 and Mishra continued his good form with 2 for 13. They play Group 1 semifinalist on Friday.
