MUMBAI: Three members of a Mumbai family are feared dead in the Malaysia Airlines plane that is suspected to have gone down into the sea between Malaysia and Vietnam on Saturday with 239 people on board.

Borivli resident Vinod Kolekar, 63, a former engineer with Mahindra & Mahindra, was on his way to Beijing along with his wife Chetana, 59, a retired nurse, and son Swanand, 23, who had completed his computer engineering course last year, to attend the convocation of his eldest son Sanved, who had completed his PhD in astrophysics.

This was the first time Chetana was taking a flight. "She was both nervous and excited about the flight," recalled Sheetal Nar, a resident of Sukh Sagar in Yogi Nagar where the Kolekars lived.

Sanved's wife had left for Beijing on February 23. The couple had got married in November last year.

Sanved was at the Beijing airport to receive them when he heard about the flight going missing. He was earlier a research scholar at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune.

"We are hoping the family is safe. Why is there no news about the plane after so many hours," said neighbour Sharad Sarang, a marine engineer.

Sarang recalled talking to Vinod about the trip last week when the latter visited him at his Goregaon workshop.

Other residents of the building also knew about the family's Beijing trip. Swanand, who completed his computer engineering course last year, was excited to be travelling with his parents. "They should be safe. They were strong believers of God," said Nar.

The family was to return in 10 days, said GJ Naik, a distant relative of the family.

The building wore a gloomy look as residents spoke about the Kolekars. "They were mostly reserved. The boys were brilliant and focused on their careers," said a resident.

Swanand's friends refused to believe that the worst could have happened. "Swanand was to appear for a competitive exam and wanted to go abroad," said a friend.

Building secretary Satish Ghogle said they had tried to get in touch with the couple's elder son but in vain. He said Chetana's aged parents lived in Mulund. She is their only daughter.
