MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Upset over the use of his pictures for election campaign by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has written to the Election Commission (EC) to clarify that he does not endorse any particular political party. The letter came after Khan learnt of a social media campaign for AAP showing him as supporting the party. "Aamir Khan, from day one, has made it clear that he will not be endorsing a particular political party. He is not supporting or campaigning for any political party," the actor's spokesperson said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Khan's proposed association with the EC as its national icon has been put on hold, with "some issues" keeping him from being signed up in time for the Lok Sabha polls. Though sources in the commission did not spell out the "issues" holding up Aamir's assignment as its fifth national icon - making him join the likes of former President A P J Abdul Kalam, cricketer M S Dhoni, badminton player Saina Nehwal and boxer Mary Kom - they clarified that it had nothing to do with the alleged controversy created by AAP's claims about the actor having batted for the party.

AAP, on its part, clarified that the poster in question was not made by the party's official publicity team. "It could have been made by a supporter of the party. We have not traced the person behind it. We have no intention of using anybody's face for our campaign," said Preeti Sharma Menon, the party's spokesperson. She said the EC has not yet contacted the party on the issue. "The poster in question only shows Arvind Kejriwal, Aamir Khan and Abdul Kalam, with a label that says AK1, 2 and 3. Even if this was made by a supporter, it does not suggest that either Aamir Khan or Abdul Kalam are members of AAP," Menon said.

Chief election commissioner V S Sampat said he would examine the complaint registered by the actor before deciding the course of action. "We have just received the complaint from Mr Khan clarifying that he was not supporting AAP as being portrayed by some of its workers. However, he will continue to encourage voters to cast their votes ethically and in large numbers," he said.
