Sunanda Pushkar's death: SDM questions Shashi Tharoor on ties with Pak scribe

NEW DELHI: Even as he wrote to the home minister offering full cooperation with investigations into the mysterious death of his wife, Sunanda Pushkar, junior HRD minister Shashi Tharoor faced some embarrassing, personal questions while having his statement recorded before a sub-divisional magistrate on Sunday.

During the hour-long recording of statement under section 164 CrPC, magistrate Alok Sharma asked Tharoor about the fights he reportedly had with Pushkar before her death and his relationship with Pakistan journalist Mehr Tarar.

"Tharoor accepted that he knew Tarar and had 'good relations' with her but he did not specify the nature of the relationship," a source said.

The magistrate also verbally recorded the statement of TV journalist Nalini Singh, who had spoken to Pushkar a night before her death. In all, the statements of eight people were recorded, including that of Sunanda's brother, Colonel Rajesh, her son Shiv, Tharoor's personal assistant R K Sharma and the two helps, Narain and Bajrangi.

Meanwhile, Tharoor asked home minister Sushilkumar Shinde for speedy investigation of the case so that the truth comes out soon. He said he was "horrified" to read media reports on Pushkar's death.

"In the midst of my mourning, I have finally had a chance to catch up with media reports and am horrified to read the reckless speculation rampant there. I am appealing to you to issue instructions to the relevant authorities to expedite their investigation and come to a rapid conclusion so that the truth emerges at the earliest," the minister of state said.

"I pledge full and unstinting cooperation. Nothing short of the truth will end the indignity to which my wife and I are being subject at a time when all I seek is to be allowed to grieve in private," 57-year-old Tharoor said.

The details of Nalini Singh's full statement were not available. She is believed to have hinted at a conspiracy behind the death. Asked if what Pushkar told her was related to the IPL and involved bookies, she said she could not divulge the content of the conversation yet but said it needed police investigation.

She had earlier said Pushkar had told her that she had been planning something and that she was not going to "take this lying down".

Police on Sunday also said that they were yet to receive medical reports that would assess the number of anti-depressant Alprax pills consumed by Pushkar. "The medicines were bought a week back by a staffer. We have recovered two strips, which together could hold 30 pills. Three tablets remain, which suggests Sunanda had consumed 27. How many of these were taken on the day she died isn't clear. We have been told by the family that these were prescribed to her," an officer said.

Meanwhile, Tharoor reached SDM Alok Sharma's office in Kapashera area around 5pm and was there for around an hour. Most of the questions revolved around Tharoor's marriage and his relationship with his wife.

The source added that the minister was quizzed about the fights he allegedly had with Pushkar after the public spat on Twitter involving Tarar. He was also asked about arguments between the couple, which I&B minister Manish Tewari was a witness to. TOI had reported on Sunday that Tewari had spotted the couple having an argument, after which she had checked into Hotel Leela Palace alone.

Tharoor left the SDM's office around 7pm. He will leave for Haridwar at 11am on Monday with Pushkar's mortal remains.

The police have not formally begun investigations into the death as they are awaiting the SDM's reports. They had questioned people at the spot and collected evidence.

In their preliminary findings, doctors have said Pushkar's death was "sudden and unnatural". The autopsy team, which conducted her post-mortem examination, also found some physical injuries.

While it is being widely suspected that Pushkar may have overdosed on anti-depressants or perhaps committed suicide distraught over her illness and upheavels in personal life, Tharoor would be a crucial link to any such investigation.
