Sidharth Malhotra, 28, was this chubby Punjabi boy, who had never thought that he would become a star and have such a wide range of female following, from young girls to older women to firangis. His only connection to films was sitting and watching Yash Chopra films with his mother, till he assisted his mentor Karan Johar and finally got launched as one of his students. He loves his dog the most and has still not come to terms with being recognised as a star, something that he feels will happen with his next release Hasee Toh Phasee. In a conversation with TOI, he talks about his kind mentor Karan Johar, his ex-South African girlfriend and why he is impatient with his mother. Excerpts:

How did you come into films? I was born and brought up in Delhi and studied in an all boys school (Don Bosco) till Class XI, when I was lucky to have moved to a co-ed (Naval Public) that was a big thing with girls as your classmates. My dad was in the merchant navy for most of his life and retired 15 years ago, as my mum was missing him. He is now a consultant, but leads a retired life. I have an older brother, who is a banker. We would be among the few kids with all those imported cans and would travel to different countries every summer vacation. While pursuing my graduation from Bhagat Singh College in Delhi University, I started modelling. That's when I auditioned for Anubhav Sinha's film and got selected as one of the three leads. Adlabs gave us a cool contract where they gave us a place to stay in Mumbai and a small salary. This lasted for six months till Anubhav Sinha decided to make Ra.One when our film got shelved. I was 22 then. My parents and I knew Manish Malhotra through fashion in Delhi, though people thought I was related to him and through him, I got into Dharma and got to assist Karan Johar in My Name is Khan. That was the best film school I could have gone to. Karan knew that Varun and I wanted to become actors. We auditioned and were selected for Student Of The Year.

How different are Varun and you? He is two years younger than me and we shared the same apartment in LA during our first schedule and he used to be the last to get up. We would work out and hang out together. He is very well-prepared for the industry. He has been an enthusiastic and over-energetic guy from the beginning. He is obsessed with chicken and I have never seen someone eat so much chicken. I don't know how he survives without any carbs or fibre. He is far more comfortable and confident of himself. He is more aware of the film world by virtue of being from a film family and having been exposed to actors and being on set from his childhood. He is very close to most of the actors. I am the more emotional, quiet, introvert kind. Varun is more in his own world, like he won't get affected if he is sure about something and will not care what you tell him, good or bad. He will do that thing the way he wants to, which is great. I think I am a little more lost as I come from a different background and the whole film world is new to me. It takes me that extra number of times to meet somebody to feel comfortable. He wanted to be a hero from the age of six. I had lived it for only five years, hence his awareness and comfort was more. During promotions, I was always lost. Every second person was Varun's friend or his father's friend or his brother's friend. Even now when we go to filmi parties, they have so much to talk to Varun and Alia, but when they come to me, they become blank and therefore I am most awkward and it takes me a little time. In my head it's just some stupid things. Though I am an actor, I am still a bit of a fan in my head when I meet a star and I have still not come to terms with the fact that I am in Bollywood. When somebody asks me for a picture, I still get surprised that they are recognising me. I think Hasee Toh Phasee will help me become an actor in my head.

Did you feel competitive towards Varun? We were aware of it. On the first day of shoot, while shooting the Radha song, I went upto him and told him, 'Varun, see we are both getting launched and people will pitch us against each other. I just want to say that none of us have to lose on this film and let us work as a team. We should tell each other to our face whatever we feel and we rather help each other than compete.' I remember him smiling that time and feeling that the load was off his chest too.

Karan Johar has played an important part in your life and career. Let's talk about him? Karan saw the potential in me more than my parents. As a person, I thought he would be really snooty, but he was very regular. He is funny and I also find him awkward and shy at times. I think he makes those jokes to make people feel he is very talkative. He is the closest person I have in Mumbai. I am also very close to Hiroo aunty. He gives me a great deal of confidence and that extra pump and push. He is quite honest with me and tells me about areas like dancing that I need to work on. He likes the fact that I am honest and have no pretence. We have that simple Punjabi boy connection, where he tells me his father too had the same habits as me, like I love mithai and I'm a foodie. He is very positive about my future and believes in me more than I do. Among his students, he was most protective about me as I have nobody to guide me unlike Alia and Varun, who are from film families. If I were in the merchant navy I would be what Varun is in the film industry.

What do you like about Karan? I admire how he handles his success and how he can deal with everyone, without carrying the baggage of the work he does. I think he does not pull that Karan Johar card anywhere and treats everyone equally. I don't think he has an ego and that, at times, is a disadvantage as people take him for a ride. He will help people with dates and other non-film related issues. I think he says yes to everything and, at times, we have seen Dharma or him not getting that help back when they need it. He is too nice and does not know how to say no.
Talk about your huge female fan following... This Karva Chauth, there were some girls who came to the Dharma office (for some reason they assumed that we will be hanging there) as they had come with Sid written on their hands with mehendi. Though I find it very sweet, I am very shy.

When did you have your first affair? The first serious affair I had was in Class XI, but when I became a model and she had to study somewhere else, the long distance thing did not work out, as she became possessive. During the three years that she was my girlfriend, I was only dating her. I was not aware but was pretty much loyal.

You were rumoured to be dating a firangi. Is that true? While doing SOTY, I dated one South African girl. I kept getting teased, as I was dating a non-Indian. But now I am single. And I guess, everybody who is single is looking out.

Which actresses do you find attractive? Katrina is very hot. Deepika and Alia are very attractive.

Were you attracted to Alia during SOTY? Yes, but the problem was that I first met her when she had walked into the Dharma office in her school uniform with her mother and she was just 17. I was 25 and asked Karan, 'Is this the girl you are considering?' She is damn funny and is very entertaining. Alia has that airplane mode, where she gets network and does not get network at times. She goes into her own world and is very comfortable with emotion. She is all there and has a great future. She has become even better looking now. There is far more to Alia than SOTY and she is very cute. She is a star. Just one compliment is all it takes to make her happy.

What are you like? I am emotional, too sensitive at times and take time to open up with people. I'd like to believe that I am clean and will not help somebody or pretend to help somebody for just the fact that I have something to gain in return. I am learning to be more comfortable in my own skin. I am still very shy and introverted. I share a number of habits with my dad, be it love for sports or fixing car plugs. I was obedient, but I have become very independent after coming to Mumbai, as I stay alone. Like my dad, I too don't communicate and show my emotions to people I care for. Luckily, whoever I want to tell, gets the message in some way. My parents are not familiar with the film industry and don't understand that when you are on a shoot you have to be a bit unavailable emotionally to your family and friends. They are just excited that I am shooting and miss the fact that I am not talking to them. This has made me very impatient with them.
