MUMBAI: After BMC officials visited actor Shah Rukh Khan's residence for the second time in 15 days to find out if the Khans had used sex-determination techniques before the birth of their third child, the actor hit an emotional note at a city hotel on Wednesday and asked people as well as authorities to leave his baby alone.
"It's a personal and delicate situation. It's sad. I request the authorities to get their facts rights," Khan said during a function to promote a soon-to-be-released film.
The third child of the actor and his wife Gauri was reportedly delivered by a surrogate mother at Masrani Hospital in Andheri on May 27. The baby was born prematurely at 34 weeks of pregnancy and weighed 1.5kg at birth.
Controversy has been raging ever since reports in a section of the press said the gender of the actor's newborn was known before his birth. Indian laws prohibit sex determination and sex selection. Khan, who has refused to talk on the issue so far, said at the late-night function. "I'll share my story when this sadness is over," he said.
Civic officials who visited the Khans' residence in Bandra (W) were not allowed to enter and were told the Khans were out of town. "My officials then went to the actor's office and delivered a letter,'' said BMC executive health officer Dr Arun Bamne.
After activists, such as lawyer Varsha Deshpande, had raised questions about Khan's third child, civic authorities first visited the actor's residence on June 17 to ascertain if sex-determination techniques had been used.
Dr Bamne told reporters on Wednesday that the BMC is now seeking additional information from the Khans because it isn't satisfied with the first reply given by the actor.
"We were not amply satisfied with the answers given to us the first time we wrote to Mr Khan. We have again sent him a letter," he said. "We know the child was born through Caesarean section and was shifted to Nanavati Hospital the same day." But no details are available in the birth record about surrogacy.
On Wednesday, BMC officials also visited Masrani and Nanavati hospitals to verify documents. According to reports, the prematurely born baby was taken to Breach Candy Hospital from Nanavati Hospital.
