Arjun Rampal's producers want to increase his security because of 'D-Day'

The reactions to D-Day have reaffirmed Arjun Rampal's faith in the idea of taking risks. Directed by Nikhil Advani, this first-of-its-kind espionage thriller is being appreciated for its gripping narrative. Late on Friday, after the movie's release, Arjun chatted with us about his reasons for playing a RAW agent, his new action-hero persona and why he is no longer interested in pleasing everyone.

Nikhil approached Arjun with the script the day Osama Bin Laden was killed and told him that he wanted to make a realistic movie with an operation of that magnitude and impact. Says Arjun, "I give him a 100/100 for giving Indians the film their way — with romance, emotions, drama and a message. This movie shows what RAW agents go through to save people's lives. Their pictures never make it to the papers. If they fail, it's their responsibility. But, they still go out there. D-Day is a story of these real heroes."

Rudra Pratap Singh, Arjun's character, marks a beginning for him as an unconventional action hero. He says, "Tom Struthers, who's done action for Inception, the Batman series, Bourne Ultimatum, etc, worked with us on the film. We underwent rigorous training to fight like real agents. We learnt the make of weapons, how to dismantle those, etc. But Tom also said that Irrfan and I were wrong for the part and that RAW agents are not so good looking!"

The movie is a departure from Arjun's usual repertoire, but he says it was time to do something different.

Reactions are pouring in for the actor from the industry as well as the audience in the theatres, and he is obviously feeling on top of the world. "I feel all my efforts have paid off. My producers call every day, wanting to increase my security cover because of this film. I know I am at risk, but I wanted to do this film. People want a hero, and I tell them, you take this hero. Every Indian should see this movie as proof that you can do what you want to do. And you don't need to please anybody. Mr Bachchan said he wishes he was born now, when such cinema is being made. It was the best compliment ever."
