Power tariff hike: CM throws away Chiranjeevi's letter

HYDERABAD: Vexed by the repeated public criticism on the power tariff hike by Union tourism minister Chiranjeevi, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is slated to complain against him to the party high command during his Delhi visit slated for this week-end.

Kiran Kumar Reddy made his anger at Chiranjeevi amply clear when the actor-turned-politician's aide and infrastructure and investments minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao met the CM on Thursday afternoon. Ganta handed over to the CM a letter written by Chiranjeevi requesting him to reduce the power hike. In response, the CM flung away the letter," sources said.

The CM is slated to have two crucial meetings with the Congress high command in Delhi this month during his two visits to Delhi for official events in the next 10 days. Though not confirmed yet, the first of the official events is the conference of chief ministers and judges on April 7, and the second is a meeting of CMs on setting up of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) scheduled to be held on April 15.

CMO sources said the CM would leave on April 6 night and return the next day. If he does not find to time meet the party leadership on April 7, he will do so during his next visit on April 15, the sources added.

According to sources, Kiran Kumar is unhappy with the Union tourism minister for his public criticism on power hike. Not only that, Chiranjeevi has written a letter to AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad seeking a meeting of the Congress coordination committee to discuss the new power tariff. "Except for the former PRP leaders and ministers, all the other Congress ministers and leaders in the state are rallying behind CM," said the sources.

"It is not the first time that Chiranjeevi has spoken out against the government's decision. He has made it a practice to regularly speak against the state government in public. Chiranjeevi's remarks on power tariff have harmed the party more than enhancing its image," said party sources.

Chief minister will also explain to the party bosses in the national capital the circumstances that led to the revision of the tariff and government's commitment to not putting burden on consumers from low income groups.

So, chief minister wants the party high command to rein-in Chiranjeevi and his men in the party from making statement that would give handle to the opposition parties.

Similarly, chief minister is expected to discuss other issues such as finalisation of names for the governnor's nomination to the Legislative Council, cabinet reshuffle, reorganisation of the PCC and the long pending issue of appointing the governing bodies to the state corporations.
