JABALPUR/JHANSI: Further denting India's image as a country unsafe for women, lathi-wielding goons attacked a Swiss tourist and her companion, who were camping in Datia, a town 65km from Gwalior, and several of the men dragged the 39-year-old woman to a clearing near her tent and gang-raped her.

The woman and her 29-year-old companion were cycling from Gwalior to Agra and decided to camp in the forest for the night on Friday. The assailants struck the unsuspecting couple, who had just finished their dinner around 10pm. After brutally assaulting the tourists, two men overpowered the man and five others dragged the woman to the clearing nearby and assaulted her. They fled an hour later robbing the victims of their cash and a laptop.

At around 11pm the woman, wailing hysterically, was discovered by two motorcyclists passing by. However, communication posed a problem as neither men on the bike understood English. After a while, they figured out what had happened and brought the couple to the Civil Lines police station.

But their ordeal was far from over. None at the police station knew English either, said a senior police officer on Saturday. Finally a constable was sent to wake up Rajat Suryawanshi, a professor of English in the local degree college, who played translator. After lodging an FIR, the woman was taken for medical examination to the district hospital. Surprisingly, in the constituency of the Madhya Pradesh health minister Narottam Mishra, no lady doctor could be found to examine and treat the traumatized woman. The lone lady doctor had gone to Jabalpur for some personal work, he said. Finally the tourist was taken to Kamalraje Hospital in Gwalior where tests confirmed rape.

Police launched a manhunt in the area early Saturday and Datia additional SP RS Prajapati said 13 suspects form nearby villages had been detained on the basis of the descriptions provided by the couple and FIR against seven unknown assailants has been registered. Those detained were local criminals and gamblers, who could have committed the crime, he said adding that the victims have been brought back to Datia where they have been put up in a resthouse to recuperate.

The couple, according to their account, had come to Mumbai a fortnight ago and was visiting Madhya Pradesh, coming via Orchha, a town bordering UP, which has an ancient Ram temple and a fort.

"They apparently lost track and took a wrong turn and decided to halt for the night by the side of a village brook little realizing that the district with 85:100 men to women ratio is not the safest place for women," a senior official, requesting anonymity, said.

Madhya Pradesh has the worst record of crimes against women. This was the second such incident involving a foreign national. Last month, a Korean woman was raped by a hotel manager at a resort at Bandhavgarh tiger reserve in Umaria district.

Swiss govt seeks justice

Reacting to the horrific gang rape of a Swiss tourist in Madhya Pradesh, the Swiss government asked for swift investigation and justice of the crime. In a strongly-worded statement, the Swiss embassy here said, "The Ambassador has been able to speak to the victim and her partner and has assured them of all possible support. Their health and treatment is the priority of the moment." The embassy has also been in touch with the Madhya Pradesh government. The couple was camping at Orchcha, where the incident occurred.
