MUMBAI: Anti-terrorism squad DCP Sanjay Banerjee's wife, Sushmita, has told investigators that her husband did not commit suicide but died after his pistol went off accidentally.

Sushmita told the police that Sanjay who was having lunch at a Thane restaurant with the family, was trying to take out his handkerchief from his pocket when his pistol fell and went off, the bullet hitting him in the head. This statement contradicts her earlier one.

Thane police commissioner K P Raghuvanshi said, "The probe is still on. We are still probing and yet to come to a conclusion. We have not come to a conclusion yet."

An officer said he did not believe Sushmita, who had earlier said Sanjay was under stress. He said Sanjay was familiar with weapons and couldn't have committed such a mistake. Banerjee had been posted with the anti-terrorism squad, where he headed the Data Analysis Wing, from June 25, 2012. He had taken out his family for a lunch last Saturday as his 13-year-old son, who studies in a boarding school at Panchgani, had come home on a vacation. He did not take his official vehicle and even asked his radio operator and driver to stay back while he drove his own car to Goa Portuguesa in Thane where the incident occurred.

Cops have got Sanjay's call records and are quizzing those who he had spoken to on the day of the incident. However, they are clueless about the "suicide" motive.
