George Ferris (George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr) was an American engineer who designed and constructed the well known Ferris Wheel.
Google on his 154th birthday commemorates the engineer with an interactive doodle that features two ferris wheels with a fairground backdrop. The Google doodle also celebrates Valentine's Day. The doodle features 16 characters narrating 10 love stories that can be view by pressing the button with love sign.
Born on February 14, 1859, in Galesburg, Illinois, Ferris pursued his graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Among his several creations, Ferris Wheel, also known as the Chicago Wheel, is the most widely known and admired. It gained much attention and admiration, and also was the prime attraction of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. The Ferris Wheel was designed with a height of 80.4 metres (264 ft) to compete the 1889 Paris Exposition's 324-metre (1,063 ft) Eiffel Tower.
The wheel had 36 passenger cars designed with 40 revolving chairs to make it competent to accommodate up to 60 people.
On November 22, 1896, George Ferris died of typhoid in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
