Upset over 'Vishwaroopam' ban, Kamal Haasan threatens to quit India

CHENNAI: Frustrated by the threats and tangles Vishwaroopam has got embroiled in, Kamal Haasan on Wednesday said he was staring at financial ruin and more legal trouble and even contemplating exile. But later in the day he shook off his sombre air and talk of exile to play a bold hero, ready to make changes to his movie and move on.

In the morning, he said he was serious about leaving Tamil Nadu or even India for a secular place where he could continue his work. The actor, who couldn't release his movie on Wednesday despite a Madras high court interim order, talked about an impending bankruptcy that could swallow his personal wealth, including the house in Alwarpet from where he addressed the media.

"If one movie is threatening the unity of the country, then I say here, take my property. I earned all of it from cinema," he said, pointing to the house where he grew up.

However, he didn't dwell on money. Instead, Kamal laughed it off. "You must be wondering why I am smiling when I talk about it. That is the way my family has dealt with money, it will come and go," he said.

Kamal talked about how he and the protesting Muslims are caught in a political game, but refused to elaborate. Instead, he said that he is thinking of leaving Tamil Nadu. "I don't think they want me here. I will look at all the states from Kashmir to Kerala, excluding Tamil Nadu. If I don't find one which is secular, I will leave for another country. MF Husain had to leave, now Haasan will also leave," he said.

Haasan to move SC against ban

The actor, appearing combative, also announced that he would move the Supreme Court to overturn the ban on the film imposed by the government following protests by Muslim outfits.

However, that wouldn't mean he will stop making Tamil movies, his only love? "Victory and failure are the same to me," said Kamal, adding that he grew up in the industry with the encouragement of stars like Gemini Ganesan, Sivaji Ganesan and MG Ramachandran.

Probably, this was why Kamal Haasan bounced back in a few hours to say that he was willing to cut portions of his movie after settling the issue amicably with his Muslim brothers. By then, fellow actors Sivakumar, Prabhu, Radhika and directors P Bharathiraja and Maniratnam had dropped in to see Kamal.

"My Muslim family has reached out to me. They came and told me which portions they want removed. We have settled it and there are no differences between me and my Muslim brothers," he said.

As far as punchlines go, Kamal had the best lines today. However, the dreary sequel remains yet another complicated legal battle for the actor.
