Axe looms on Sehwag; Pujara likely to make team against England

NEW DELHI: India's humiliating series loss to Pakistan may prompt the national selection committee to take some harsh decisions on Sunday, when they meet here to pick the team for the ODI series against England. Sources told TOI that following some unimpressive performances, even established batsmen like Virender Sehwag are in danger of losing their place.

The last ODI against Pakistan on Sunday at the Ferozeshah Kotla is going to be crucial for Sehwag, it is learnt. If he fails to hit form, he may be dropped for the England series but the selectors are also aware that an in-form Sehwag will be an asset in the upcoming Test series against Australia.

"Sehwag is a big player and the selectors are hoping he will score runs at the Kotla. If he is dropped for the England ODIs, his place in the Test team will also be in question. The team needs an in-form Sehwag for the Australia Test series, especially at a time when there is no Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman," a BCCI source told TOI.

Batting failures at the top are not the only concern for selectors. The middle order too has been failing to live up to the mark, and after a series of ordinary batting displays, Rohit Sharma may have to make way for Cheteshwar Pujara. The selectors are also assessing Manoj Tiwary's fitness to see if he is available.

Also under the scanner is the fitness status of Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan in the bowling department. Sandip Patil & Co are also not too happy with the way Ravindra Jadeja has performed with the bat. The selectors have also been pushing R Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to do their bit with the bat in the lower-middle order.

According to sources, selectors have attributed India's recent dip in ODI form to their inability to capitalize on the batting Powerplay. They are concerned that the amount of sixes conceded is much higher than the amount of sixes hit, and are looking to Suresh Raina to play a bigger role during the Powerplays.

During a private dinner hosted by BCCI president N Srinivasan in Chennai before the first ODI against Pakistan, the selectors told Dhoni in presence of coach Duncan Fletcher to 'hit the ground running' and 'take control of the team'. Sources said Dhoni told selectors about the new ICC regulations and how it could hamper India in ODIs, adding that it would take 'some time' for the team to settle down.

The BCCI is planning to organize a 10-day training camp before the Australia series, and spinners and medium-pacers who have made a mark this Ranji Trophy season may be asked to join.
